According to Jody Bradley, assistant principal at Paradise Elementary, Erik Orndorff, Pequea Valley School District (PVSD) superintendent, kicked off the school year with a specific theme. “Dr. Orndorff focused on remembering your purpose,” reported Bradley, who noted that the One Book - One School choice of “The Wizard of Oz,” which includes characters exploring their own purposes, was chosen to coordinate with that theme.
A Pequea Valley Education Foundation (PVEF) grant paid for copies of the book for families of both Paradise Elementary and Salisbury Elementary students. PVEF runs two yearly grant cycles with a goal of distributing all the funds the organization takes in. Karla Beiler, director of Pequea Valley Elementary Advocacy at The Factory Ministries, reported that the grant, for more than $1,900, will cover the cost of 600 books.
Bradley explained that reading will start in January. “We will kick
off in the new year (with the book), and we will be done (reading it) by the time Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) performs the ‘Wizard of Oz’ in March, which is a perfect tie-in,” she explained. “The reason we chose ‘Wizard of Oz’ was not just because it aligned with the musical,” Bradley added, noting that the goal was to involve the community. “The purpose is to read together,” said Bradley. “Families are taking that time to do that.”
Because some parents work in the evenings, organizers are partnering with sixth-grade student members of the school Braves Club, who serve as mentors, to read to younger children when necessary. They also plan to look for willing readers from 55-andolder communities in the area. “We are trying to link up with them to see if some volunteers will record themselves reading (the book),” explained Bradley. “So, if a student doesn’t have access to an adult at home, they could go to our website and have someone from the community read to them.”
Another plan is to involve the business community and other local
organizations. “We are still working on having the community do a Yellow Brick Road scavenger hunt,” said Bradley, who noted that students and their families would visit local tourist spots and service organizations, such as the fire companies and the library, to learn about the purposes of those places.
Because organizers are hoping to complete the book in time for PVHS’ production of “The Wizard of Oz,” they are hoping to work with student actors and director Nathan Bankert to bring musical numbers to the elementary schools. “We would love if the characters could do a mini presentation in our gym for everyone,” said Bradley.
PVEF will be taking part in the ExtraGive 2022 online fundraising event to be held on Friday, Nov. 18, and the organization will have a display at the Block Party to be held at The Factory from 4:30 to 7 p.m. that day. Readers who wish to support the organization during the ExtraGive may visit www.extragive.org.

Chuckie Magee Flag Football League Plays To Varying Abilities

Saturday, Nov. 5, was a beautiful fall day in Manheim. The sun shone in the parking lot at Manheim Brethren in Christ Church on North Penryn Road, and the breeze brew subtly through the colored leaves. Inside, however, the fun was fierce and so was the competition. The 20 members of the Chuckie Magee flag football teams and half See Aaron’s Acres pg 2

Adam Nagle, director of The Factory Ministries in Paradise, is clear about the need for drug and alcohol counseling and other services in the area. “When you Google ‘drug and alcohol services in Lancaster County’ (in the Pequea Valley area), there is nothing,” said Nagle. “It is a desert for these types of resources. Yet, when you talk to local police and look at Narcan use … you know it’s prevalent and a real need.”
Daniel Makowski, caseworker with the Naaman Center, can fill in the specifics of the issues Nagle
references. “Attorney General Josh Shapiro’s office released a report on the number of overdose deaths in Pennsylvania in the last year,” said Makowski, noting that the state ranks third in the nation in this area. “There were 5,341 overdose deaths in Pennsylvania. One hundred thirty-one of those deaths were in Lancaster County.” Makowski went on to point out that the lack of access to drug and alcohol services in rural areas coupled with problems with traveling to Lancaster city, such as transportation or taking time off from work, further complicate the problem. a dozen cheerleaders enjoyed the last game of the season. The league was created earlier this year for participants ages 21 to 40 with varying abilities and disabilities. The Cowboys in blue and the Eagles in green lined up for play after play.
When the Eagles scored, a volunteer played “Fly Eagles Fly” and members of the Eagles team began to sing.
Cowboys coach Randy Samuels quickly approached a reporter on the sidelines, saying, “You need to put this in this article, so everyone reads it. This song they are playing now is officially banned from this league.”
Laughter ensued, and Rita Paskoff, executive director of Aaron’s Acres, which is the parent organization of the league, said, “Randy is brutal. He is in everyone’s face. He is just so much fun, and everyone gives it right back to him.”
As Paskoff finished talking, Eagles team member JJ intercepted a football and ran the length of the gym for a touchdown. Cheers erupted. “That was great,” Paskoff told JJ. “Good for you!”
Following the final game, a banquet was held at the church. Awards, trophies, and medals were given out, and participants, parents, coaches and volunteers, including Randy’s wife, Doris, and Chuck and Bev Magee, parents of Chuckie, for whom the league is named, enjoyed pizza from Jersey Mike’s Subs and Rita’s Italian Ice. “The church has been wonderful - so supportive and helpful,” said Paskoff, who added that sponsors who have contributed to expenses include Costanzo Wealth Management, 4 Cole’s KIDS, Bomberger’s, Executive Printing, and Lanco Federal Credit Union.
The league has been so successful, the group is talking about organizing a similar program around a different sport during the winter season from January to March, which will be followed in April by Challenge Baseball. “These (participants) are older than 21, so this was a nice way to segue into serving an older group, which is where we want to go,” explained Paskoff.
Aaron’s Acres will be
taking part in the ExtraGive 2022 online fundraising event to be held on Friday, Nov. 18. On that day, representatives of the organization will visit several county loca-
tions, including Grand Central Bagel from 7 to 10 a.m., Jersey Mike’s Subs at the Belmont Shoppes from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Dale High Leadership Center from 3 to 6 p.m., and Tellus 360 from 2 to 7 p.m. Readers who wish to support the organization during the ExtraGive may visit www.extragive.org.

To remedy the situation, The Factory and the Naaman Center are partnering to provide mental health counseling services via telehealth and a caseworker, specifically Makowski, located in the building at 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, each Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Naaman Center offers outpatient addiction treatment from a number of Lancaster County locations.
Starting in early October, Makowski has been conducting drug and alcohol evaluations and screenings at The Factory to create a whole picture of a client and meet his or her needs. Evaluations include questions about living situation, education history, employment, substance use history, legal issues, mental health, and medical history.
“These are all things we need to think about to determine the best level of care for this person,” said Makowski.
Viewing the whole picture translates to treatment as well. “This isn’t just somebody who abuses substances,” said Makowski. “There are a lot of pieces to this person’s life.” Makowski noted that it is important to look into a client’s background to discover contributing factors to substance abuse issues, such as stressors like finding affordable housing.
Anna Beasley, director of adult advocacy for The Factory Ministries, pointed out that substance abuse affects a circle of individuals surrounding the abuser. “To have the Naaman Center in this community is such an incredible
opportunity not only for individuals struggling with substance abuse, but also for their families,” she said. “I love it when powerful resources are made accessible to everyone, and I believe the Naaman Center is just that - a powerful resource of hope and healing.”

State Police To Offer Law Enforcement Training
BY FRANCINE FULTON
Taking part in scenarios like a traffic stop, learning about weapon safety and criminal procedure and participating in fitness training are just some of the activities that youths can experience at the Pennsylvania State Police Hill Impact Program. The free 14-week course, which is open to young men and women ages 15 through 18, will take place at the Pennsylvania State Police Academy, 175 Hersheypark Drive, Hershey, on Tuesdays from Jan. 17 through April 18, 2023, from 5:30 to 8 p.m.
“(We want youths to) come through this program and to see what the Pennsylvania State Police department has to offer,” said Trooper Clint Long, program director. “They (may) gain a love for the career and want to pursue that later in life. That is our goal.”
Students who register for the program will receive matching T-shirts and hats to wear during the classes, as well as water bottles. Each session will include physical
training (PT), followed by a time of instruction and hands-on activities.
“We introduce them to paramilitary disciplinesmarching, standing at attention and saluting. We introduce them to physical fitness and we move into our law enforcement curriculum,” Long explained.
“The first 30 minutes is a military drill and PT, and then there is an hour and a half of scenario-based training.”
Scenarios may include reenacting a traffic stop or responding to a mock call. “We make it fun and interactive. We try and let the kids do a lot of hands-on stuff in a safe way,” said Long. “They are (learning) and having fun at the same time.”
This is the third session of the Hill Impact Program, which is named for the Pennsylvania State Police Academy, known to locals as The Hill because of its location in
Hershey. The course is open to students from all geographical locations. “For the first session, we had some students who drove three hours one way to attend,” Long pointed out.
He said that the students often come away from the program realizing that law enforcement officers have chosen their career because they want to serve the community. “As troopers, we put the community above ourselves. It’s amazing how fast they learn that and how quickly they catch on,” Long said.
The program also encourages a relationship between young people and law enforcement officers. “We have a core group of instructors that will be here every Tuesday. Although a large selection of books will be featured at the upcoming fall book sale being held by the Friends of the Moores Memorial Library in Christiana, the event will feature additional items as well, including puzzles, games, gifts, recorded books and hundreds of DVDs and CDs.
The Friends’ fall book sale will take place in the Read Moore Book Store, located in the lower level of the library, 9 W. Slokom Ave., Christiana. Sale hours will be on Thursday, Nov. 17, from 1 to 7 p.m.; on Friday, Nov. 18, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and on Saturday, Nov. 19, from 8 a.m. to noon. Admission is free.
Organizers noted that all books will be reasonably priced. Special items, rare books and collectible titles will be individually priced.
There will be specials each day of the sale, as well as a bag sale. “We supply the bags, and only adult and young adult fiction and non-fiction titles are eligible for the bag sale,” noted Jeannette Kolb, Friends vice president.
Also for sale will be leftover donations from the Friends’ yard sale held this past summer. The yard sale items will be located on a table in the community room next to the bookstore.
There will also be items
suitable for gift giving for the upcoming holidays. “We will have lots of stocking stuffers,” said Joan Esworthy, Friends president. Gift items will include Beanie Babies, tote bags and paintings donated by local artist John Esworthy, as well as notecards featuring an illustration of the library.
Many of the books offered for sale will be sorted by popular authors, such as Danielle Steele, John Grisham, James Patterson and David Baldacci. “We try to make it easy for people,” said Karen Woods, Friends treasurer, adding, “We will have children’s books and foreign language books. We have romance novels and large-print books and series specials.”
There are special sections in the bookstore, such as the Education Corner, which offers nursing textbooks and books for homeschooled students, and a Kitchen Corner, where an assortment of cookbooks can be found.
Books in the Read Moore Book Store, which come from community donations and the library’s collection, are dis-
played on unique shelving, including a canoe. There are also shelves that were made from a baby grand piano, a young adult section featuring books displayed on skateboards and bookshelves made from rain gutters. Since the library’s building once was home to a bank, shoppers can find rare and unique books in the “vault.”
The Read Moore Book Store is open during library hours: Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 to 7 p.m.; and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon. The store is staffed and maintained by volunteers from the Friends group. For more information, visit www.facebook.com/Read MooreBookStore.
Additional volunteers are needed. Prospective members are invited to visit www .christianalibrary.org/friends for more information.
To learn about upcoming library events, contact the library at 610-593-6683, visit www.christianalibrary.org or search for “Christiana Library” on Facebook.

Soccer Team Raises Funds For Cancer Research
The Lancaster Mennonite (LM) boys’ varsity soccer team recently joined with area L-L League soccer teams wearing shirts in support of the Red Card Cancer initiative. L-L League schools and families donated to support the cause, and local teams wore the shirts during warm-ups all week to do the same. Red Card Cancer is a nonprofit in partnership with the American Cancer Society, committed to raising money and awareness for cancer research.
LM joined the initiative in memory of the late Nathan Longenecker, a former LM student and boys’ soccer player who died a year ago following an eight-month battle with brain cancer. Lynn Longenecker, Nathan’s father, noted that Nathan received his cancer diagnosis in the spring of his freshman year of college. “It was the most powerless feeling to see the disease take over and destroy his healthy 19-year-old
body and know that no one knew how to stop it,” said Lynn. “Thanks to the school (LM), team, and the Red Card Cancer campaign for helping support research to better understand this terrible disease. It won’t bring Nathan back, but will hopefully help make better outcomes possible for others in the future.” Nathan’s brother, Jesse, a junior, is a current
Berlin’s “White Christmas” Set
The Fulton Theatre, 12 N. Prince St., Lancaster, announced the complete casting of its holiday production of Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas.” Will Ray as Bob Wallace and Hanley Smith as Betty Haynes will join forces once again. Ray and Smith will partner with Fulton Theatre newcomers Luke Hawkins as Phil Davis and Sarah Meahl as Judy Haynes in this song and dance spectacular.
“White Christmas” will open on Thursday, Nov. 17,
and run through Saturday, Dec. 31. Previews will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 15, and Wednesday, Nov. 16. Presenting classics such as “Blue Skies,” “I Love a Piano,” “Love, You Didn’t Do Right By Me,” “Sisters,” and the title song, the cast of 29 and live orchestra of 10 will perform the largest dance show of this season at the Fulton Theatre.
The play is appropriate for people of all ages. For more information, visit www.thefulton.org.
member of the LM team.
The LM team also participated in honor of LM teacher and boys’ soccer goalie coach Jim Amstutz’s brother, Pete, who is currently fighting Stage 4 glioblastoma brain cancer. Pete and his wife live in Goshen, Ind. “Being so far apart, I sometimes feel helpless in knowing how to be supportive. This was something my family and I could do to stand with
Pete and the Longenecker family,” said Jim. He also noted that when he was a men’s soccer coach at Bluffton University, Pete was the team manager.

Singers Post Christmas Show
LeeP Productions will once again present an original holiday concert experience, “Christmas in Perfect Harmony.” The program features the trio Perfect Harmony - which consists of Lancaster County performers Ric Zimmerman, Kat Prickett, and Sarah Poague - singing original arrangements of sacred and secular holiday classics in three-part harmony.
Joining Perfect Harmony are Katrina King and, at select venues, Brad Barkdoll, Jim Martin and Mark Butzer. Arrangements were provided by area artists such as Andy Roberts, Scott Williams, and Tyler Hoover, and Andrea McCormick from American Music Theatre contributed original staging and choreography.
Concert dates and locations include Sunday, Nov. 27, at 3
p.m. at Chapel Church, 3050 Cape Horn Road, Red Lion; Sunday, Dec. 4, at 2 p.m., Lancaster Alliance Church, 210 Pitney Road, Lancaster; Dec. 4 at 7 p.m., First Presbyterian Church Strasburg, 101 S. Decatur St., Strasburg; Sunday, Dec. 11, at 4 p.m., Chiques Church, 4045 Sunnyside Road, Manheim; Fridays, Dec. 9 and 16, at 7:30 p.m., The Red Caboose Motel, 312 Paradise Lane, Ronks; and Wednesday and Thursday, Dec. 28 and 29, at 7 p.m., The Star Barn, 1 Hollinger Lane, Elizabethtown. Perfect Harmony, based in Lancaster, specializes in storytelling through music. The group presents original arrangements, accompanied with live piano or sung a cap-
pella, in a variety of styles, from folk to Broadway to gospel. Perfect Harmony has performed at venues across Lancaster County and beyond. Most recently, the group opened for Larry Gatlin of the Gatlin Brothers.
“Christmas in Perfect Harmony” is approximately 70 minutes in length, and most shows will include a 15-minute
intermission. Light concessions will be available for sale, as well as Perfect Harmony merchandise.
Most performances do not require tickets and are offered at pay-what-you-will prices. Several venues do require tickets and have a fee. For more information, visit www.weareperfectharmony .com or call 717-288-7942.

Project Receives Wildlife Grant
The Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), with the recommendation and support of the Sierra Club - Lancaster Group, applied for and was awarded a Huplits Wildlife Grant of $9,800. The grant will focus on a wildlife habitat revitalization project at MCC’s 9-acre campus in Akron.
In tandem with the eradication of invasive species, the project will provide educational opportunities for local schools, community groups, and other organizations, as well as research projects for young adults that concentrate on the restoration of woodland. Currently, MCC, whose campus is strategically landscaped to promote biodiversity, offers children and community groups hands-on education that promotes healthy forests, native
plants, wildlife, solar energy, and water conservation.
The grants are subsidized by the private Myrtle Huplits and Woodman Huplits Foundation of Yardley, which was founded in 1991 and most recently had more than $1.8 million in revenue. Sierra Club entities, as well as non-Sierra Club organizations in Pennsylvania that share similar goals with Sierra Club groups and/or the Sierra Club - Pennsylvania Chapter, can participate in the competition.
For more information about MCC’s project, email katrinalefever@mcc.org. Complete details regarding the grants competition can be found by visiting www.sierraclub.org and searching for Huplits Wildlife Grant at the bottom of the home page.
