As the holidays approach, the village of Intercourse begins to prepare for the time ahead with tasteful decorations in a variety of colors. Organizers of the 25th annual Intercourse Merchants

Holiday Celebration have chosen to resurrect a time-honored tradition that points right to the heart of the season. “We are going back to our roots,” said Mike Sensenig. “We will do the Nativity and Shepherds Walk.”

The Shepherds Walk, for which

local children are invited to dress as shepherds and take part, will begin at the Intercourse Library, 31 Center St., Intercourse, at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 2. The walk will proceed from the library to the Old Candle Barn on Old Philadelphia Pike, making a few stops along the way. Live Nativities

will be held at the Old Candle Barn at 6 and 6:30 p.m.

Earlier that day, the celebration will kick off with events at the library. At 3 p.m., a one-man performance of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” with Christopher Davis will be presented. “(Davis)

In 2021, Gifts That Give Hope founder Jenn Knepper made a few changes in the annual celebration. First, the event returned to its original venue, and second, it moved to a Sunday so that attendees could enjoy a little shopping following church. The formula was successful, and this year, the gift fair will take place on Sunday, Dec. 11, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster.

Christmas In The Village

A quarter-century ago, Ned Bustard of Lancaster began writing “Saint Nicholas the Giftgiver” for his children. A

year ago, InterVarsity Press chose the book to launch its IVP Kids literature line. “I wrote it because I wanted a book to read to my daughters that would embrace all the

magic of Christmas and Santa Claus, but not lose the Christian element,” said Ned.

Ned, who illustrates and publishes, along with writing books, will bring his creative

magic to the Garden Spot Village (GSV) Christmas Market to be held at GSV, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland, on Saturday, Dec. 3, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Several organizations will be at the fair for the first time this year, including the fledgling Heeding God’s Call to End Gun Violence, which is starting a Lancaster chapter. The group held its first event at St. Edward’s Episcopal Church in September. At the fair, representatives hope to offer education and raise both funds and awareness. “There have been 75 gun homicides in the last 10 years in Lancaster County,” said representative Sue Heilman, who added the group hopes to influence young people with a pledge concerning firearms.

Josiah Groff started Big

Picture Soccer three years ago when he and his wife were serving at an orphanage in Juarez, Mexico. “We work with local leaders in communities in poverty,” said Groff, who now lives in Lancaster. “We give them resources and training so they are able to start soccer clubs for the youth in those communities.” According to Groff, the goal is to use soccer clubs to build character, inspire hope, and provide opportunities. Big Picture has a club in Uganda, and Groff is working to start a club in Lancaster city that will give immigrant and refugee populations opportunities to connect with the community. Attendees at the fair can help Big Picture by sponsoring teams or purchasing equipment.

The 2022 fair will feature 45 nonprofit organizations offering environmentally friendly and ethically sourced gifts, along with food and beverages from local eateries and food trucks. Father Christmas

Gifts That Give Hope

When dancer Libby Shannon Miller of Lititz was killed at the age of 10 in a car accident in February, her parents, Brooke Carlock and David Miller, knew they wanted to do something to promote dance in their daughter’s memory. “(Libby) was a competitive dancer,” said Brooke. “Dance was her life and passion.”

David agreed, recalling, “She was (at the dance stu-

dio) six days a week.” Knowing the costs of lessons, costumes, and competitions, Libby’s parents decided to raise money to provide scholarships for dance students. Live Like Libby scholarships are available for eligible students as nominated by local dance studios. People who donate during the fair will support these scholarships.

Brooke said that the name

was chosen based on chalk messages written by Libby’s fellow John R. Bonfield Elementary students. “It was perfect for her (because) she was so full of joy and life and kind to everyone,” said Brooke.

For a nominal cost, Ned will work with children to make cards that mimic the illustrations in his book, using woodblocks, inks, and rollers. Ned chose the woodcut look for his illustrations because he “appreciated the aesthetic.” He learned printmaking from a friend, and now he will share those skills with the children who attend the GSV event. Each hour, his wife, Leslie, will read the Christmas poem he wrote about Saint Nicholas.

Ned first became acquainted with GSV when his work was featured in an art exhibit there. The idea for the Saint Nicholas book traces back to when he and Leslie, who teaches history, began exploring the Turkish origins of the jolly old elf. “The miracle of Christmas for (Saint Nicholas) is that Christmas never ends,” said Ned. “He just walks the Earth giving out gifts, and his bag never empties.”

Other family activities scheduled for the event include a Kids Christmas Mar-

ket on the lower level of Village Square, family Christmas photos at the Village Square, and opportunities to visit the train room, where model engines steam through tiny villages, and the woodshop in the Gardens West Basement.

Shoppers will find a Christmas Makers Market, featuring handmade gifts, in the Village Park. A gift basket silent auction for people of all ages will be held in the theater located off Village Square, and a chocolate bark and hot cocoa

making demonstration will be given in the Village Park. Christmas-themed baked goods will be available for purchase on the lower level of Village Square.

In addition, visitors will find shops at GSV, such as the Share & Care Thrift Store and Artisans Corner open to peruse. GSV’s several eateries will welcome hungry attendees as well.

In October, Poiema Visual Arts introduced Sketch It! Sunday, a new program that partnered with multiple local churches to connect with members of the community via visual learning techniques. The organization invited churches across Pennsylvania to participate by providing the churches with drawing paper and writing utensils and encouraging them to invite members of their congregations to sketch and take notes during the service.

“We wanted to share a tool to reach visual learners,” said Jeremy Miller, founder and CEO of Poiema Visual Arts. “The activity has the potential to greatly impact creatives. For the analytical, they can take written notes, and those who don’t want to participate have nothing to worry about, as the services haven’t changed at all.” Some churches elected to participate on one specific Sunday that aligned with their schedules in October, and others participated every Sunday of the month.

Poiema Visual Arts began by sending over 200 letters that invited churches to participate, and seven churches across four different counties stepped forward to use the technique. Miller noted that one participating church expressed a desire to

integrate Sketch It! Sundays more frequently and asked about other creatively guided opportunities for its congregants. A member of Poiema’s board of directors, who is a pastor at a church that utilized the program, said she was pleasantly surprised at the number of church members who participated and were excited to share their artwork after the service.

“I’m a pastor myself, and we like it when people look up at us during the service, but when that person leaves with that enthusiasm and realizes that this is an option for them to continue learning, what we’ve done is create a disciple of Christ,” said Miller. Miller has a background in the arts and Christian education, and for several years he struggled to combine his passion for art with his Christian faith.

Over two decades ago, Miller taught at Lancaster Bible College and first began to dream of creating a place for visual artists to engage with Scripture. He started laying the foundation for what he called “biblical creative theology,” as his life took him down many different paths. Miller spent time teaching overseas, attended seminary in Virginia and briefly lived in Texas before returning to Lancaster County. As his sons grew older, Miller realized that he needed a new direction,
