Leacock plans Christmas Bazaar or many years, Leacock Presbyterian Church held a Christmas bazaar. The advent of COVID-19 restrictions interfered with that event, but now a group of women associated with the church is working to bring back the tradition. They include Christy Fieldsa, Bonnie Rice, Alba Ruhl, and Marsha Ault. The 2023 bazaar will be held on Saturday, Dec. 2, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the church, 3181 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise. The group has been working since late summer to organize the annual event, which will include the plated bonbons and cookies the church has become known for, along with ornaments and decorations, a silent auction, and a variety of food items. Among the handmade ornaments that will be offered for sale are some in felt or paper. Ornaments called Santa’s Magic Keys that resemble reindeer heads and are decorated with red ribbons will be offered, as will decorative items, including wreaths, trees, and snowmen. Gift jars of soup, hot

chocolate, friendship tea, and cookie mixes will be available along with potpourri mixes. Kitchen utensils that are both pretty and functional, live plants, and lamps will go up for sale as will glass versions of games such as chess, Jenga, and tic-tac-toe. Toys and books have also been donated to sell, and there will be a variety of handmade jewelry. A few antique items, such as a rocking horse and a painting that have been donated, may be sold at silent auction. Ruhl said that up to eight items will be included in the auction, which will remain open until after the 9:30 a.m. service at the church on Sunday, Dec. 3. An Advent breakfast will be held at the church at 9 a.m. on Dec. 3, and attendees will be able to bid during that event. Church members are creating gift baskets for the sale. Among the themed baskets that organizers expect to offer are a wine basket, a movie night basket, and a fishing basket. In addition to the plated cookies and bonbons, a bake sale will be held. Rice noted that the holiday café will be open for hungry visitors.

Joseph DiAngelo, dean of the Erivan K. Haub School of Business at Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, is excited about what the school can bring to Lancaster County residents as the organization looks forward to merging with the Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences, 850 Greenfield Road, Lancaster, in January. “Several years ago … our strategic planning was looking to expand

the discretion of the church missions committee. More information about the church may be found at www.leacockpres.org.

into health care,” recalled DiAngelo. “We were interested in affiliating with programs that are already accredited, and we were interested in nursing.” After a successful partnership with Lancaster General Hospital, providing business courses for doctors and senior administrators, strategists saw possibilities in the Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences, but DiAngelo sees the acquisition as bringing opportunities to Lancaster residents. “Nothing is going to change in Lancaster,” said DiAngelo. The goal,

“This is the fourth year in a row we have a new scene,” said Adam Fox, program director at Woodcrest Retreat. “If you came (to Journey to Bethlehem) five years ago, the script is 80% different (now).” The 13th presentation of the Journey to Bethlehem event at Woodcrest Retreat, which takes visitors on a trek through the woods of Woodcrest to a live Nativity, will aim to make the experience real for attendees. To that end, each year, fresh creativity is poured into the project. This year’s Journey to Bethlehem

Interested students submitted essays explaining how they would implement a campaign in their school to spread awareness about the importance of learning how to respond to a cardiac emergency by calling 9-1-1, starting hands-only CPR and using an AED. The essay contest winners included Penelope Alcaro, a student at Saint Joseph School in Mechanicsburg; Daniel Benack, Manheim Township Middle School; Mallory Cassel, Commonwealth Charter Academy; Ainsley Conner,

Students spent the morning learning real-world clinical skills in the college’s simulation center, including a safety scavenger hunt, patient ventilation and hands-only CPR and AED response. Additionally, students volunteered to roll up their sleeves and become the canvas for very realistic simulated injuries, which are an important part of many training exercises. They also learned about the structure of the heart from Children’s Hospital pediatric cardiologist Dr. Thomas Dispenza and worked together to turn a pile of craft supplies into a functioning

Recording artist David Phelps will perform in concert on Sunday, Dec. 10, at 3 p.m. at Lancaster Mennonite School, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. This event will be a stop on the “It Must Be Christmas” tour. Once a child musical prodigy from Tomball, Texas, Phelps earned a bachelor’s degree in music from Baylor University. He is the tenor for the multiple Grammy and Dove Awardwinning Gaither Vocal Band. He has performed at numerous prestigious venues around the globe, including the W hite House, New York’s Carnegie Hall and the Sydney Opera House in Australia. This year’s “It Music Be Christmas” tour will mark the 24th annual Christmas tour featuring Phelps and will include a dozen concerts he will perform with his musical entourage throughout the holiday season. Many of the songs to be performed are included on Phelps’ “It Must Be Christ-

This year’s sale will once again focus on delightful and delicious things. “Cookies will be sold by the dozen and the half dozen,” said Dagen, who noted that live evergreens, winterberry, and some wreaths done in faux greenery have been created for the event. Dagen has also decorated winter-themed items, such as skates in Christmas colors and décor for sale. Many of the wreaths carry reminders of the Christmases of yesteryear in their subtle colors. Dagen used items from nature, such as birch and Queen Anne’s lace, to complete the

Woodcrest Retreat from pg 1 will be held at the retreat center, 225 Woodcrest Drive, Ephrata, on Fridays, Dec. 8 and 15, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. and on Saturdays, Dec. 9 and 16, from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to dress warmly and wear appropriate waterresistant shoes on the hourlong trek. Although the event is family-friendly, strollers and those with mobility issues cannot be accommodated because of the rugged landscape. As in the past, the event will give participants the opportunity to become part of the Christmas story as they follow Mary and Joseph from the moment they receive the news that Mary will give birth to the Christ child to their arrival at the stable where Christ was born and beyond. “We have a lot that is new this year,” said Fox, who noted that the retreat center is partnering with the drama department of Lititz Area Mennonite School for a new scene. “(The students) will perform a Jewish-inspired song and dance about yearning for the Messiah,” Fox said. The live Nativity is interactive in that adults and children who attend may participate in some scenes. As visitors witness the walk to Bethlehem, they will experience the holy couple’s

disappointment when there is no room at the inn. Participants will also visit a marketplace, where they may spend a shekel to purchase raisins or crackers. Another scene will take place in a large field, where shepherds will hear the angels announce Christ’s birth. Visitors will then arrive at a stable where they will find Joseph and Mary and baby Jesus. The final stop is now a live presentation that takes place in the palace of one of the wise men. Fox noted that about 2,600 people attended the 2022 journey. The cost to attend will be discounted for children ages 4 to 16. Children age 3 and under will be admitted for free. In addition, a special price will be available to members of an immediate family living in the same household. Reservations may be made at www.woodcre stretreat.org/journey. Readers who have questions may call 717-738-2233. All funds raised by the event will benefit the ministry of Woodcrest, a nonprofit retreat and camp center that serves nearly 2,000 children each year. In the case of inclement weather, those planning to attend Journey to Bethlehem should check the aforementioned website for information.
