Inone word, Tim Rogers, lead pastor with Grace Point Church of Paradise, can pinpoint the impetus for the new daily devotional titled “All You Want for Christmas.”
“‘Yearning,’” said Rogers. “This whole devotional sprang up around that idea. We want Emmanuel (God with us) to come. We yearn and call for that.”
“All You Want for Christmas” features writings from 25 area pastors and church and ministry members, who shared their thoughts on Christmas carols and other holiday songs to help bring deeper meaning to the holiday season. Churches that took part, in addition to Grace Point, were Gateway Church, Calvary Monument Bible Church, Hershey Mennonite Church, IMPACT Church, Keystone Church, Maple Grove Mennonite Church, Ridgeview Mennonite Church, and Pequea Baptist Church. Also involved were The Factory Ministries and ServeNow. The devotional will be available at
www.youversion.com/the-bible-app startingon Thursday, Dec. 1. Those who prefer a printed version may contact jen@gracepointparadise.com.
Brandon Fisher of Keystone Church provided the framework for selecting carols and other songs for the writings.
The devotional has its roots in a booklet called “Trust Me,” which the group released in 2021 with the idea of reassuring area residents and beyond with the promises of God found throughout the Bible.
“Trust Me” garnered close to 8,000 subscribers. For “All You Want for Christmas,” Rogers said that the group wanted to offer spiritual sustenance to the holiday season. “We felt like it could be a good way to bring value to our community and show that there is unity and hope around Christmas time,” he said.
Songs that were chosen for devotionals included both the traditional “Angels We Have Heard on High” and the more modern “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” One writer shared the story behind Vince Guaraldi’s “Christmas Time Is
Here,” written for “A Charlie Brown Christmas.”
Writers who took on the assignment grappled with lyrics ranging from Fisher’s exploration of the third verse of “Joy to the World” to Pequea Baptist’s Clint Shondelmyer opting to discuss the seldom-sung verse of “Angels From the Realms of Glory” that discusses judgment. Greg Petersheim of Grace Point wrote on “What Child Is This?” and
pointed out the importance of God’s attention to the small and seemingly insignificant, and Audrey Kanagy of Ridgeview tackled “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas,” with a reference to Luke 1:78-79. Kanagy investigated the arrival of Christmas decorations and the range of feelings they can inspire from delight to disillusionment. “To believe that the hope we have in Jesus is more than the
fancy decorations and allow God’s tender mercy and grace to break into whatever we are experiencing,” said Kanagy.
Adam Nagle, director of The Factory, noted that “Away in a Manger” is really a prayer to stay close to God. “All humans yearn for that,” he said. “We don’t all feel it or experience it because, (although) God is always present, (we are) not always relationally in tune with that.”

Tina Cosgrove Edgell cannot remember a time when her parents, James and Kathy Cosgrove, did not own the Revere Tavern in Paradise. The Cosgroves purchased the property at 3063 Lincoln Highway with a man named Buzz Myers when Tina was just a child nearly 60 years ago. “It was just this bar and one dining room,” recalled Tina. “When Buzz wanted out, my dad bought his part.”
In the early 1970s, an employee
named Betty Hottenstein was looking forward to her son returning from serving in Vietnam, and she asked the Cosgroves if he could work in the restaurant. “Ray Hottenstein came to work for my parents and helped to develop the business,” said Tina, who noted that the expansion included adding the banquet room and, in the 1990s, the hotel and theater located behind the restaurant, along with the suites located next door. Ray eventually went on to own the Olde Greenfield Inn. See Revere Tavern pg 4

Balancing the familiar with the contemporary is a tightrope that Ken Laudermilch, conductor of the New Holland Band, walks each year as Christmas approaches. “Old harmonization worked in a different time, but in this age when things are fast moving, people want to hear recognizable tunes in new suits of clothes,” said Laudermilch, who dresses “stable and recognizable” holiday musical fare in brighter and livelier colors.
This year, the 11th annual
New Holland Band Holiday Pops concert will be held on Friday, Dec. 9, in the Palm Court of the Double-Tree Resort, 2400 Willow Street Pike, Lancaster. Doors will open at 6:15 p.m. The event is known for featuring a meal surrounded by the sights and sounds of the season. “We want to give family and friends a chance to converse around the table at this cordial time of year,” noted Laudermilch.
As it has a few times before, the event will kick off with trumpets from the balcony announcing the start of John Wasson’s “Festival Fanfare for Christmas.”
“If I don’t have (the trumpets), people ask where (they are),” explained Laudermilch, who said this will be the fourth time the trumpets lead the event. “It’s really a great opening,” he added.
The opening will be followed by lighter music, including pieces such as “March of the Toys” from “Babes in Toyland,” “The Holly

It is a day like no other in New Holland. Streets close … crafters put their creativity on display … local teens stroll the through town singing … and businesses, churches, restaurants, and more all contribute to the festive atmosphere.
Christmas on Main - the event that kicks off the local holiday season - will be held on Saturday, Dec. 3, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. North and South Roberts Avenue will close at 10 a.m., and a section of Main Street will be closed from 2 to 6 p.m. Highlights of the event will include food vendors, a car show, and the arrival of Santa Claus, followed by the lighting of the Christmas tree on Towne Centre Green.
According to Jen Parsons, representative of the New Holland Business Association, which organizes the event, two
Christmas Markets will be held to give attendees an enhanced shopping experience. The traditional market will be held in the New Holland Farmers Day Association building at the corner of Roberts Avenue and Franklin Street from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Down Franklin Street, a second market will be take place at Warehouse 100 as well. More than 40 total vendors are expected to participate.
A car show, featuring classic and vintage automobiles, will be held on Main Street between Roberts and Custer avenues from noon to 3 p.m. South Roberts Avenue will be lined with nearly a dozen food vendors, including those selling coffee, doughnuts, hot dogs, tacos, nachos, barbecued chicken, ribs, brisket, pulled pork, chicken corn soup, french fries, and kettle popcorn.
To add to the seasonal feel, GMDSounds will spin
tunes on North Roberts Avenue beginning at noon, and Santa Claus will arrive at Towne Centre Green, at the corner of Main Street and North Roberts Avenue, via a Garden Spot Fire Rescue truck at 2 p.m. Santa will greet children in his hut, donated by Lapp Structures, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.
The true reason for the season will be celebrated with a live Nativity in front of Smoker Gard Associates on Main Street beginning at 2 p.m. Members of Lighthouse Assembly of God Church will create the scene and sing Christmas carols.
Round-trip carriage rides and hayrides will originate at Stauffer’s Drug Store from 2:30 to 5 p.m. Also beginning at 2:30 p.m., New Holland Fair Queen and Garden Spot High School (GSHS) senior Kendell Moats will read Christmas stories to children at Towne Centre Greene.
Among the many musical performances planned for the event will be a program by the LV Singers from Lighthouse Vocational Rehabilitation near the Christmas tree at Towne Centre Greene at 4:30 p.m. Students from the GSHS Vocal Ensemble will stroll and carol during the afternoon while members of the New Holland Band will also stroll and play. Just prior to the tree lighting at 5 p.m., the two entities will partner to perform at Towne Centre Greene. “It adds such
a nice ambiance to lighting the tree,” said Parsons. Moats will have the honor of flipping the switch to illuminate the community Christmas tree at 5 p.m.

RevereTavern
Once the Revere Tavern announced in September that it was closing in early October, past customers from near and far made the journey to enjoy one more meal. “The last three weeks (we were open) was a walk down memory lane,” said Tina. “That’s where you realize the impact you made on the community,” she added. “This wasn’t just a restaurant; it was part of these families’ histories.”
Many patrons were first introduced to the restaurant when they attended a special event. “We had some remarkable weddings here,” said Tina.
“We had so many fire company banquets,” said assistant general manager Kim Nichols, who listed fire departments including Gordonville, Paradise, Lafayette, Christiana, and Eden among the departments that held yearly events at the venue. Tina recalled that in 1986 when a fire threatened the front of the building, the Eden Fire Company, located in Manheim Township, saved the structure.
Weathering COVID-19 restrictions was hard on the business, but the current labor shortage was also a detriment. Tina’s father stopped working daily in 2018. Her mother stopped coming in during the COVID-19 shutdown, but she continues to be involved with the hotel from home. Tina’s brother Jim Cosgrove was the restaurant’s general manager,

and Tina has worked there full time for the last several years. Along the way, her sister, Patty Watson; her own daughter; and her niece and nephew and other family members all worked there as well. According to Tina, everyone just filled in where they were needed. According to Kim, humility was the prevailing attitude.
“People that worked here never said, ‘That’s not my job,’” she pointed out. “We all did whatever it took … dishwashing, serving, cooking.”
Both Tina and Kim would like to see the building become a new restaurant.
“This building is a part of the community,” said Kim. “It’s a gorgeous, very sturdy, and well-taken-care-of building. It would be wonderful for someone to see the potential and have the drive to start a restaurant.”

and the Ivy,” and possibly the well-known Carpenters classic “Merry Christmas, Darling.” “It’s such a pretty tune, and everyone knows it,” said Laudermilch.
For the first time, the Lancaster Bible College Chorale, under the direction of Robert Bigley, will join the band for a few numbers. The chorale will sing two songs accompanied by the band and a third song will be performed a capella.
Additional Christmas favorites will include music from the movie “Miracle on 34th Street,” “The Bells of Christmas,” Leroy Anderson’s “Sleigh Ride,” and “A Winter’s Night,” based on the quintessential carol “Silent Night,” in a new setting.
The event includes dinner for individuals and tables of eight and 10. Readers who would like to purchase tickets may do so at www.newhollandband.org or by calling 717-355-5096.

Creative Works of Lancaster will present “Jaws to the World: A Holiday Sock Opera,” a musical sock puppet parody of the movie “Jaws,” on Friday, Dec. 9, at Zoetropolis Cinema Stillhouse, 112 N. Water St., with performances at 6, 8 and 10 p.m.
On hiatus since “Sock Puppet Star Wars: The Skywalker Sock-a,” in December 2018, the Creative Works sock puppets will go back in the water 10 years after the premiere of “Jaws to the World: A Holiday Sock Opera” in 2012 at the Lancaster Dispensing Company.
“Jaws to the World: A Holiday Sock Opera” will include singing sharks and cardboard boats as five actorpuppeteers wield a cast of more than 30 customdesigned, handmade sock puppets. Originally written by playwright and former Creative Works board member Erich Goldstein, the script has been newly updated and refreshed with Erich’s blessing by current board member Alexander Bannon. Musical director Joshua Schwartz from the original production will return to lead the cast’s performances of rock and pop music and Christmas carols.

including Mary Kay cosmetics and Norwex cleaning, will also offer items for sale.
“We will have hot lunches to purchase - soup and sandwiches - along with doughnuts and coffee,” said club president Steve Wenrich.
Visitors will also have an opportunity to win gift baskets, and Santa Claus will be on hand and available for photos.
The club has also recently started collecting plastic items as part of a recycling program offered through Trex, which allows communities to earn free benches. Attendees are encouraged to bring plastic items to the bazaar.
“We are asking people to
bring plastic grocery bags. We will be able to recycle them and get a bench for the Salisbury Township Community Park in Gap,” Wenrich noted. Other items that can be donated include newspaper sleeves, empty ice bags and bread bags and the plastic that is used to wrap cases of bottled water.
Proceeds from the bazaar will help support the Lions Club’s community projects, such as the Pequea Valley High School’s Career Occupation Relevancy Education (C.O.R.E.) Program, which teaches trades to students and promotes craftsmanship. In the past, the club has also supported the Christiana Ambulance Association and partnered with Blessings of Hope to provide food boxes to people in need in the Gap, Salisbury Township and Pequea Valley areas.
Information will be provided at the bazaar for those interested in joining the Lions Club.
The Gap Town Clock Lions Club meets on the first Thursday of each month at 7 a.m. at a member’s home. For the meeting location, email Wenrich at swenrich@fultonbank.com.
Wenrich said that owning a business is not required to join the club. “The Lions Club is composed of people who come together to network and to serve the community. We welcome everyone,” he said.
The Gap Fire Hall is located at 802 Pequea Ave., Gap. For more information about the bazaar or the Lions Club, visit www.facebook.com/gap lionsclub.
There are a few vendor spaces available at the bazaar. Individuals may contact Wenrich for additional details.

PENNYSAVER - Pequea Valley Edition - November 30, 2022 - 9 townlively.com R090548
The 36th annual Lancaster County Project for the Needy (LCPN) holiday dinner giveaway has partnered with the United Way of Lancaster and UPMC Pinnacle Health to provide a complete holiday meal for families throughout Lancaster County on Saturday, Dec. 17. Once again, the holiday meal distribution will take
place by delivery only; there will be no pickup location.
Families must preregister for this event by calling the United Way’s 211 or 855567-5341 by Friday, Dec. 9. A volunteer will deliver the holiday meal to registered participants on the morning of Dec. 17.
The project anticipates
distributing approximately 3,000 boxes of turkey dinners with all the trimmings to low-income families across Lancaster County throughout the holiday season. The main supporters of this year’s distribution are UPMC Pinnacle Health Plan, GFL Environmental Inc., Matthew 25, Stroehmann
Bakeries, Giant Foods, Pepperidge Farms, Four Seasons Produce, Keener Potatoes, and Packaging Corporation of America.
In addition to this year’s partnership with the United Way of Lancaster, LCPN will also continue its partnerships with Elizabethtown Community Homeless Outreach Services, Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS), the Columbia Lions, The Factory Ministries, Mission Food Pantry, Ephrata Area Social Services, and Solanco Food Pantry to provide meals to families in designated areas.
LCPN is still seeking donations to offset the cost of purchasing the groceries for the dinner. LCPN relies on individual donations for over two-thirds of the resources needed to fund the food distribution. Monetary donations can be made online at www.lcpn.org. For information on donating by mail, call Tom Fasnacht at 717-569-8521. LCPN is a nonprofit group relying solely on public donations and volunteers.

In “The Polar Express,” on Christmas Eve, a steam locomotive passenger train known as the Polar Express stops at the house of a boy who is growing skeptical about the existence of Santa Claus. The
conductor says the train is traveling to the North Pole, and the boy, although reluctant at first, climbs aboard.
Each ticket includes a screening of the film, popcorn, and hot chocolate. Advance tickets are available at www.eventbrite.com. If available, tickets will be sold at the door.
For more information, visit www.rrmuseumpa.org or call 717-687-8628. The proceeds of movie night will benefit the nonprofit Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania.
