Wreaths Across America will honor local veterans Diem. “We started with 1,250 (wreaths). This year, we will be placing 2,800 wreaths in 27 cemeteries.” Diem will lead the ceremony, which will be held indoors and is free and open to the community. “It’s about a half-hour ceremony. I will talk about Wreaths Across America and the meaning of the day,” she said, noting that there will be special wreaths presented to local veterans and community members representing the branches of the military. “We will present eight wreaths on behalf of the Army, Marines, Air Force, Navy, Space Force, Merchant Marines, Coast Guard and the POW/MIAs.” Following the ceremony, the special wreaths will be transported to the Gap VFW by auxiliary member Dick Martin. The wreaths will be displayed on the front lawn of the building. Wreath placement will take place at local cemeteries such as Glen Run

reaths are placed at the graves of veterans every holiday season as part of the Wreaths Across America program, which seeks to remember and honor those who served in the military and teach others, especially children, about the value of freedom. Locally, a Wreaths Across America program will take place on Saturday, Dec. 16. The event will begin with a ceremony at noon at Pequea Valley (PV) Intermediate School, 166 S. New Holland Road, Kinzers. Wreaths will then be placed at ceremonies in the Octorara and PV school districts. The effort is being led by Gap resident Paula Diem, who brought the tradition to the area after taking part in the Wreaths Across America ceremony several times at Arlington National Cemetery. “This will be our fifth time placing wreaths,” said

Tim Farrell, one of the leaders of the Lancaster Prayer Breakfast, which was held for the second year on Nov. 3, said that when the committee organized under the Leaders of Faith Foundation, the goal was to make the event unique, with prayer as the key component. The group decided to focus on six areas - business, government, art/media, education, family, and church - and ask a community leader to lead prayer on each of those segments. Each speaker asked

table groups to pray on a subject and then concluded by leading the gathering of more than 400 in prayer. Master of ceremonies Tracey C. Jones, president of Tremendous Leadership and T3 Solutions, opened the event, saying, “The Lancaster Prayer Breakfast endeavors to further the rich heritage and spiritual guidance handed down by the Founding Fathers … and magnify Jesus Christ through unified prayers.” Worship music was provided by Dave Ross, pastor of worship ministries at Calvary Church, who See Lancaster Prayer Breakfast pg 11

Collins welcomed the gathering, saying, “I hope you feel honored for the sacrifice you have made for our country. We hope you feel that from our staff and our kids.” Following the luncheon, an assembly was held in the school gymnasium. The event opened with a patriotic medley played by members of the PVIS and Pequea Valley High School bands. The medley was followed by the national anthem sung a capella by Brave Sounds, under the direction of music teacher Alicia Trescavage. Trescavage then sang “God Bless America.” William Darras, one of the organizers of the event, spoke briefly, saying, See PVIS pg 5 LVP Carpet Area Rugs Remnants Vinyl Paint & Supplies

Submitted by Leona Baker of the Historical Society of Salisbury Township It’s December; what better theme than gifting for this time of giving? Teach your great-grands the names of their grandparents, more than just Mam and Pop-Pop. Don’t forget to relate how your great-grandfather had to walk to the grocery store to use the telephone. In their day, grandparents actually put an envelope with a handwritten message inside into a metal mailbox. For just 35 cents, it got to California in three days. Talk about how you walked to school in all kinds of weather. Take the time to clearly label the oak chest your great-grandfather made for his bride or the handmade nap rug your mother made for you for kindergarten. On a personal note: An oak side table stored in my attic almost got thrown out until someone turned it upside down and discovered my grandmother had made it. I learned that she made the table at the beginning of World War II when, as a fifth-grade teacher, she had to master shop mechanics so

she could replace the shop teacher when he entered the armed services. That table now sits in my living room, a proud reminder that women in the 1940s stepped up to the plate when the men went to war. The Historical Society of Salisbury Township has diaries, family books and school photos, many of which are included in the new book “How They Learned Their ABCs,” which is about those long-closed one-room public schools in the township. Remember the jukebox? The society has one from the Gap Diner. Perhaps you listened to a jukebox and danced to the tunes of the ’40s and ’50s. Entertain your family this holiday. Demonstrate the jitterbug. That should get the party rolling. No matter what path you take down memory lane, take your family with you. How you and your ancestors lived will never come around again.

photo, but what it depicts and why we snapped it is not recorded. The material stays on our phone without further recognition. There will be nothing to tell our greatgrandchildren what that photo means. Admittedly, this is not new. How many of us have unmarked photos from the 1800s? Relatives, yes, but who? I always feel sad for those in old photos. They represent a once-living person and now they are cast away because no one knows who they are. I have many unmarked sepias myself. Have you ever said, “I wish I had asked Mother that when she was alive”? Or “My grandfather would have known the answer to that.” Now may be the time to label those many photos or start a conversation with great aunt Elizabeth about what she played with when she was a little girl 90 years ago. Or ask Uncle Hiram how he got that scar on his forehead when he was a kid.

LancasterHistory has announced the arrival of the biography “An Uncommon Woman: The Life of Lydia Hamilton Smith,” written by Mark Kelley and co-published by Penn State University Press and LancasterHistory. “An Uncommon Woman” explores the life of Lydia Hamilton Smith, a prominent mixed-race businesswoman in 19th-century Lancaster. Born a free woman near Gettysburg, Smith began working for Thaddeus Stevens in 1844 in Lancaster. A figure of resilience and progressive action, Smith

was instrumental to Stevens’ success as he led the drive to end slavery, impeach Andrew Johnson, and push for the ratification of the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments. In his book, Kelley reveals how Smith served the cause of abolition, managed Stevens’ household, acquired property, and crossed racialized social boundaries. Kelley holds a Ph.D. in journalism from Syracuse University. He worked for 25 years as a broadcast journalist and has taught journalism and mass communications. “An Uncommon Woman” is his fourth

book. Kelley currently serves on the Scholarly Advisory Committee for the Thaddeus Stevens & Lydia Hamilton Smith Center for History and Democracy, a museum under development by LancasterHistory. Copies of “An Uncommon Woman” are now available at LancasterHistory’s Museum Store, 230 N. President Ave., Lancaster, and LancasterHistory’s online Museum Store, accessible by visiting www.lan casterhistory.org and clicking Shop. Working with representatives in Washington, D.C., the wreath maker had the extras placed at Arlington National Cemetery in one of the older cemetery sections that had few visitors. From there, the organization grew. In 2022, Wreaths

Military vehicles provided by D & L Bensinger were part of the event.

“Today we honor veterans who placed their lives on the line for our freedom and remember those who are currently fighting for our freedom. We thank them for the freedoms we currently have.” Darras introduced teacher Taylor Croft, who spoke on the history of Veterans Day, explaining that it was first called Armistice Day. “In the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in the year 1918, fighting between the Allied forces and Germany ceased, marking the end of World War I,” he said. “We mark that solemn occasion with our observance of Veterans Day each Nov. 11. Croft noted that President Woodrow Wilson first signed the proclamation of Armistice Day, which Congress made a national holiday in 1938. He noted that in 1954, the name was changed to Veterans Day “to honor those who died and all living veterans.” “These brave men and women have assured the freedom and democracy we enjoy today,” he said. “We owe these veterans a tremendous debt of gratitude.” Gabby Hunt, Student Council president, introduced the veterans who were present, including each name, branch of service, and rank, along with the number of

years of service. Student Annika Hofstetter offered the band assembly remarks, introducing the “Marches of the Armed Forces” and inviting each veteran to stand when the song representing his or her branch of the service was played. Hofstetter also spoke on the history of taps, which originally was a signal to extinguish lights at a military encampment. She noted that in 2012, Congress recognized taps as a national song of remembrance. “Taps is played to pay tribute to all veterans who served our nation honorably but are no longer with us,” she said. Collins explained that following the assembly, the veterans told their stories to the homeroom classes, and students created military lawn signs to honor them. “There are a lot of holiday activities happening across York and Lancaster counties,” said Megan Salvatore, visitor service representative for Susquehanna National Heritage Area (SNHA). For the first time, SNHA has created a Holiday Bucket List, highlighting 25 events throughout the region. SNHA staff members had created bucket lists previously, but none focused solely on holiday events, Salvatore explained. “Susquehanna National Heritage Area has a mission to connect the people and communities of Lancaster and York County in order to celebrate our shared heritage, encourage preservation and promote sustainable economic growth,” she stated. “The Holiday Bucket List invites people to immerse themselves in the diverse holiday traditions of our national heritage area. By participating in the bucket list activities, you can support a local business and our many arts and culture organizations.”

The list provides activities to help people get into the holiday spirit, Salvatore commented. “We encourage residents and visitors to utilize the list as a tool to keep your family busy discovering something new or to show visiting family around during holiday visits,” she said. “Many of the activities stretch from now until the new year.” Activities on the list include catching a holiday performance at a local theater, driving through holiday lights at the Barnstormers’ stadium in Lancaster and watching winter wildlife at a local nature preserve. is not the first time the inflatable planetarium has visited Zion Lutheran. “(Cosmic Adventures) did a different program for us a few years ago,” said Shetter, who recalled that for the “Stars and S’mores” presentation, telescopes were set up in the church parking lot, and fire pits were lit for toasting marshmallows. “The presentation was really insightful,” Shetter recalled. Calling the planetarium experience “perfect for this season,” Shetter noted that the focus will be on examining the idea of how the Star of Bethlehem progressed and what the magi saw. “(The presenter) will tell both the biblical side and interject some scientific evidence,” said Shetter, who noted that anyone who enjoys stargazing may be curious about the presentation. “It’s open to everybody … from children to adults,” he said. While the 30-minute program is free, it is necessary to register in advance for the event. Readers who wish to attend may register for one of the four showings at www.zionleola.org or by

Ryan Aument asked attendees to join him in lifting up the government - elected and appointed officials, first responders, and the military. “Pray for vision, courage, perseverance, and strength to serve in love and lift up their families and to preserve their marriages,” said Aument. Doug Myer of WDAC prayed for art and media, quoting Franklin Roosevelt’s address to Congress that concluded with the Four Freedoms Speech. Myers focused on the freedoms of speech and expression of every person to worship in his own way. “God help us think clearly, act rightly, and do so in a spirit of love,” he prayed. Beth Haldeman, assistant to the superintendent of the Cocalico School District, prayed for education, with special attention to families, atmosphere, students,

Sen. Ryan Aument

teachers, and staff. She specifically prayed for schools of all types to be “places of enrichment and nourishment.” Walt Mueller, president of the Center for Parent/Youth Understanding, spoke about sin, brokenness, and the need for a redeemer and new life, and he pointed out current cultural issues facing families. “We are here by God’s design in this moment,” he said. “We pray that You would fill all families with a hunger to live Your will … to understand our responsibilities before You. May we seek to live out Your kingdom way in our families to Your glory,” he said. Kevin Eshleman, lead pastor of Ephrata Community Church, spoke about Jesus’ prayer in John 17. “Jesus prays for Himself and the purposes of God, then for the disciples and then for us all those who would be His followers,” Eshleman said. Eshleman focused on unity among the churches in Lancaster County. “I want to pray with thanksgiving because God has been doing a work among us, bringing (area) congregations of different expressions (of faith) together under the banner of the Lord Jesus Christ,” he said.
