Community Reach Accepting Donations Our choice food pantry shelves are in constant need of all canned and packaged items! Client appointments each month continue to average nearly 250 households from the three school disticts which make up our service area. That adds up to 500-1000 individuals being helped by your generous donations. Inventory has been on the extremely lean side for most of the second quarter of this year, so we are asking for your help to stock the shelves with much needed items by Labor Day weekend. Thank you for your support with this vital need! • Especially needed at this time are canned meats and fish, baked beans and other canned veggies, canned fruit, canned pastas, canned or packaged potatoes and rice, cereals and oatmeal, water, soup bowls, and Ramen noodles. • Fresh produce and frozen meats are currently needed as well. • Also needed are hot chocolate, coffee and tea, juices and other beverages. • Toiletries, hygiene products, household paper goods and cleaning items, infant and adult diapers are always in short supply and are very appreciated by our clients!
Jackets and sweaters and hoodies, warm sweat pants and sweatshirts, and socks – don’t forget socks! -all of these items are helpful for the winter weather. We do accept some coats, especially children sizes, and we often need larger sizes for both women and men. Our space is limited for storage so we do not accept donations of most clothing items; please donate those items to the Dallastown Economy Store.
BLANKETS AND WARM GEAR It is difficult to believe but our blanket drive will start in just a couple of months! New and gently-used/clean blankets, quilts, sleeping bags, and sheets are needed beginning in September for distribution as soon as the weather starts to bring a chill. The children love the small rolled-up throw blankets. Perhaps you are ‘down-sizing’ or cleaning out someone’s house and have extras to give away; perhaps you could arrange a drive at your church or organization. Now is a great time to keep an eye out for bargain prices where you like to shop!

Patton Veterinary Hospital Fosters Fear Free Environment for Pets New veterinary initiative means fewer stressed pets at the vet
RED LION, Pennsylvania.—April 9th 2019—The Patton Veterinary Hospital joins many veterinary clinics across the nation in making a visit to the vet a positive experience. Under the direction of Dr. Kevin Schmidt, all of Patton’s doctors and several other staff members have already completed their individual certification and Patton Veterinary Hospital is now certified as a “Fear Free Veterinary Practice” as of September 2018. Nationally known veterinarian Dr. Marty Becker had the idea for a Fear Free campaign after hearing noted veterinary behaviorist Dr. Karen Overall speak on anxiety and fear in animals in 2009. He launched his “Fear Free Initiative” in 2016 with a view to make visits to veterinary hospitals less stressful for both pets and their owners. “Simply put,” says Dr. Becker, “Fear Free is a commit-

ment to better pet health and well-being based on an understanding of the detrimental effects of fear and stress on animal health. Many pet owners are familiar with the anxiety surrounding a veterinary visit—the cat who resists going into her carrier or the dog who puts on the brakes when he arrives at the vet’s front door. In fact, a Bayer Veterinary Care usage study reported that 37% of dog owners and 58% of cat owners stated their pets hate going to the vet. Patton wants to change this. “A fearful pet is an unhappy pet, and when pets are unhappy, so are their owners and so is the veterinary staff, says Dr. Walters, one of Patton’s associate vets. “We love animals and hate to see them in distress. Our goal in creating a fear free environment is to make your pet’s visit go as smoothly and as comfortably as possible. Reducing fear makes for calmer, happier pets, better exams, and makes future visits easier when pets have a positive experience. Patton Veterinary Hospital employs gentle handling techniques, use of food treats or a pet’s favorite toy, and use of anti-anxiety medications or sedation in order to put pets at ease. community to inform, to educate and to provide the best quality Procedures are performed wherever pets are most comfortable care to all companion animals in a pleasant family environment. such as on the floor or in their owners’ laps as part of the hospital’s For more information, please visit www.pattonvethospital.com. “Fear Free protocol.
