The Southern Lancaster County Fair Association welcomes you to its annual agriculture fair. Experience the same wholesome atmosphere filled with fellowship, food and friendly competition today that the founders of the Solanco Fair envisioned over 60 years ago. In the spring of 1950, a group of farm women enthusiastically decided that the Solanco area needed a fair of its own. With the help of many different community and agricultural based organizations, in September of that same year, the first Solanco Fair made its debut and was here to stay. The Solanco Fair is not only a vital part of the Southern End Community; it reflects the spirit and values of the individuals living in the community. Dedicated citizens volunteer their time and many talents throughout the year to ensure a successful event. At the fair, they can be found diligently working to supervise the many behind-the-scenes details that make the event run like a well-oiled machine. It is with deep appreciation that we say thank you to these friends, businesses and community organizations.

Attracting individuals of all ages, the Solanco Fair is a work in progress. Over the years, the fair has both improved and built new facilities on the fairgrounds, added new entertaining events to its three-day line-up, and welcomed new categories in which to display competitive handiwork. While the Fair Association works to see that the Solanco Fair changes to meet the needs of the growing community, it is also a source of pride that the fair retains much of the same community spirit, volunteer dedication, and agricultural heritage as that of the very first fair. Every September in Southern Lancaster County you will find the FFA and 4-H members grooming their animals for the show, proud cooks in their kitchen baking treats for the judges to sample, farmers and small gardeners choosing their produce for competition, young children participating in the parades, and an overall enthusiastic and excited attitude in the citizens of the Solanco area. - The Southern Lancaster County Fair Association

Premium Book Cover

By Marcella Peyre-Ferry

Fourteen-year-old Jacob St.Clair, son of Mark and Karen St.Clair of Quarryville, has already won a number of awards for his artwork and now is distinguished as the cover artist for the 2014 Solanco Fair premium book. Each year, the cover art for the fair book is selected from the work of Solanco School District middle school students. Students at Swift and Smith middle schools take on the project as part of their regular art class assignments, with judges selecting a cover that shows artistic talent while representing the character of the Solanco Fair. For his cover design, Jacob chose a ribbonwinning pig. "I did a prizewinning show pig, and a

a final copy, and sent it in." Jacob attends the fair each year as a spectator. "I go every year just to watch. I like just going around with my friends and seeing the prize-winning animals," he said. At Smith, Jacob was a member of the art club and received multiple Jacob St.Clair is the cover year-end awards for his artist for this year's Solanco art work. Jacob, who is a freshman at Solanco High School this year, has been on the honor roll every marking period in middle school. His favorite subjects are art and math, and he hopes to attend college to major in some form of art. "I used to go to a couple of different schools. I have found Solanco has been my favorite so far," he said. Jacob played three years of baseball. "I'm not involved in any sports right now, but I'm thinking of soccer," he said. He also enjoys hunting and fishing.

D oyd Wel Ll

By Marcella Peyre-Ferry The 2014 Solanco Fair Book is dedicated to the memory of Lloyd Welk. A longtime participant and active member of the Fair Association, Welk passed away in February at age 61 as the result of a tree cutting accident. Lloyd’s twin brother, Leroy, recalled how Lloyd became involved with the fair. "He was

head of the dairy committee (for) probably 30 years, and he was a past president," he said, noting that Lloyd was a strong supporter of the youth involvement with the Solanco Fair. "He loved kids and 4-H." Welk Acres is the Welk family farm, located about a mile from the Solanco Fairgrounds in Eden Township and partially in Quarryville borough. All of the family members have been involved in supporting the fair and in competing there as well.

"We m i l k e d cows for 30 years. We would take 10 or 12 down (to the fair) each year," Leroy said. "Lloyd’s grandchildren are showing now under Welk Acres. It's all family." Lloyd was an integral part of the livestock exhibition section of the fair, using his experience to keep things running smoothly. "Lloyd and I always started before everybody got here. We help set up the fair and tear down. Both of us laid everything out," Leroy said. "It's going to be a lot different this year." Members of the Welk family

will continue their involvement with the Solanco Fair, however. "I took Lloyd's place on the dairy committee, and my son, Jeremy, took over as one of the co-chairs on the dairy committee to get some younger blood in there," Leroy said. Attending the fair may be a bittersweet experience for Leroy and his family this year, and many of Lloyd's friends will miss his presence at the event. "Everybody liked him. Everybody thought he was great," Leroy said. "He never had a bad part in him." Going into the future, Leroy believes his brother would want the fair to continue on its present path. "I definitely know he would like to keep it an agricultural fair like we have now, Leroy remarked. The Welk family will keep Lloyd’s memory alive at the fair by adding an award in his honor to the list of prizes for the Holstein show. "We're going to sponsor the Grand Champion Holstein Cow trophy as a memorial to him," Leroy confirmed.

Larry And Linda Myers

Parade Grand By Marcella Peyre-Ferry

Leading the Solanco Fair Parade this year will be Larry and Linda Myers. "I think it's a real honor. I was really surprised," Larry said. "It was the last thing I expected." Linda admits that she heard rumors of their selection as grand marshals, but she did not mention it to her husband. He did not know of the selection until it was officially announced in mid-August. "I had heard it through the grapevine back in April, but I kept it under my hat," she said. "I think it's exciting."

Normally working behind the scenes to make sure everyone enjoys the event, the couple is being recognized this year for their contribution toward ensuring that the fairground’s electrical systems are safe and dependable. "We're pretty much consumed with the wiring, (but) we have lots of help," Larry said. "Lots of fair members help to get the wires up. Then it’s up to my son and me to make sure (that) the connections are right and

that we've got everything safe. It's not the neatest installation we could do, because we've only got three days." Myers Electric has been

Brian, doing the field work and Linda handling the office. Larry started working on the electrical systems back in 1985, but he has a deeper connection to the Solanco Fair that goes back to his youth. "We've gone to the Fair ever since I can remember," he said. "I actually showed cattle in both the 4-H and FFA. I had a farming background. I was born and raised on a farm, then in the mid-1970s I retrained for the electrical industry. It

Marshals was a good fit for me." With the electrical work at the fair to keep him busy, Larry has not watched the annual parade for some time. "I used to, (but) then when we started doing the wiring there, we were pretty busy with getting lights on and making sure everything was OK," he said. "The three days that the fair goes on, even though it's installed, we continually monitor the electrical systems and check things out." With her husband and son occupied with the electricity responsibilities, Linda is usually left

to watch the parade on her own. She enjoys many aspects of the fair. "My favorite part is the handwork like the sewing, the artwork, the crafts, and the flowers," she said. "I (also) love the food and the people." Larry’s many years working at the Solanco Fair has been a positive experience. "The whole Fair Association experience has been a good one. They're very cooperative," he said. "It's a well-run organization where people may disagree, but it’s not a problem. People problemsolve and move along."

Larry sees the fair as a community event that brings out the best in people. "The fair operates a lot like the Amish community. When there's

a project to be done, the word goes out, the help comes in, and the job gets done," he said. "That's pretty cool. I've seen that for 29 years."
