THE SOUTHERN LANCASTER COUNTY FAIR ASSOCIATION WELCOMES YOU TO ITS ANNUAL AGRICULTURE FAIR. Experience the same wholesome atmosphere filled with fellowship, food and friendly competition today that the founders of the Solanco Fair envisioned over 65 years ago. In the spring of 1950, a group of farm women enthusiastically decided that the Solanco area needed a fair of its own. With the help of many different community and agricultural-based organizations, in September of that same year, the first Solanco Fair made its debut and was here to stay. The Solanco Fair is not only a vital part of the Southern End Community; it reflects the spirit and values of the individuals living in the community. Dedicated citizens volunteer their time and many talents throughout the year to ensure a successful event. At the fair, they can be found diligently working to supervise the many behind-the-scenes details that make the event run like a well-oiled machine. It is with deep appreciation that we say thank you to these friends, businesses, and community organizations.
Hitzer
Attracting individuals of all ages, the Solanco Fair is a work in progress. Over the years, the fair has both improved and built new facilities on the fairgrounds, added new entertaining events to its three-day lineup, and welcomed new categories in which to display competitive handiwork. While the Fair Association works to see that the Solanco Fair changes to meet the needs of the growing community, it is also a source of pride that the fair retains much of the same community spirit, volunteer dedication, and agricultural heritage as that of the very first fair. Every September in Southern Lancaster County you will find the FFA and 4-H members grooming their animals for the show, proud cooks in their kitchen baking treats for the judges to sample, farmers and small gardeners choosing their produce for competition, young children participating in the parades, and an overall enthusiastic and excited attitude in the citizens of the Solanco area. It's fair time - won't you join us? - The Southern Lancaster County Fair Association

Quarryville Couple To Lead
By Dayna M. Reidenouer
Solanco Parade
Quarryville residents Jim and Linda Landis consider themselves just part of the crowd that makes the Solanco Fair successful. On Wednesday, Sept. 14, however, Jim and Linda will be at the forefront of the Solanco Fair Parade when it kicks off around 6 p.m., as they have been selected to serve as the grand marshals. “I’d rather be behind the scenes,” Linda said, echoing the sentiments of many of the grand marshals before her. “Same as me,” Jim added, noting that accepting the honor has been somewhat difficult. “When you’re around the fair, you realize there are so many people involved with making it work.” Although a significant number of volunteers make the fair possible, the Landises have played key roles through the years. The couple married in 1968, and in the late 1970s, two of their three children began showing livestock at the fair. In the early 1980s, the livestock department needed help, so Jim stepped up. He served on the beef committee for a number of years, and in the early 1990s, he joined the fair’s board of directors. He recently stepped down as an assistant manager in order to make room for younger people. Although he has no official role for the upcoming fair, Jim plans to serve wherever he is needed, whether it is configuring furnishings in buildings or making repairs to structures.

Linda and Jim Landis of Quarryville have been selected as grand marshals for the Solanco Fair Parade, which will be held on Sept. 14. Linda has also been active in the fair, starting in childhood. “My neighbor lady was a volunteer (in the food tent). I remember the tent, helping … to clean off the tables,” Linda said, explaining that she remembers when the Solanco Fair was housed primarily in tents and in the firehouse on the other side of South Lime Street. When her children participated in 4-H and FFA, Linda helped with their projects. One year several decades ago, she was conscripted into clerking for the livestock sale at the fair, and she has performed the task at every fair since. Linda also volunteers at the milkshake stand with her church group on Wednesday nights at the fair, so it has been many years since she has watched the parade. Additionally, Linda has been instrumental in creating the fair premium book. For nearly 30 years, Linda has sold ads to commercial vendors. “We used to go door-to-door to solicit ads,” Linda said. “When Peggy Osborne came on as a co-chair, we decided to start sending forms.” The two women typically begin contacting businesses in April. “I try to get the new ads to make up for the ones we lose,” Linda said. “As long as we make a nice profit for the fair, (I’m pleased). We have loyal customers.” Interestingly, Linda is not a professional salesperson. She has worked part time as a minibus driver for Solanco School District for 30 years. “I enjoy (the sales role),” Linda said, adding, “If there’s someone who wants to take over my position, I’m OK with that.” Making room for younger people to be involved with the fair is important to the Landises. “(The fair) is a really good event for all generations,” Jim said. “I’ve always enjoyed seeing the younger people bringing their projects into the fair. A lot of them take a year and a lot of work.” He added, “It’s neat to see all the people come together. We’ve made a lot of friends there.” The Landises’ children are now the age that Jim and Linda were when they first began volunteering. Their second son, Jim Landis II, helps to run the tractor pull. The couple has four grandsons and one granddaughter, and a fifth grandson is due during the week of the fair. Solanco Fair website: www.solancofair.com

Pedal Tractor Pull will
By Marcella Peyre-Ferry One of the most popular contests at the Solanco Fair is the pedal tractor pull, which gives everyone from young children to adults an opportunity to take a turn at pulling a weighted sled while operating a riding toy. The event is similar to the antique tractor pulls at the fair, except that the tractor is powered by the rider. The pedal tractor pull is so popular that department
FARM FRESH MILK AT A SAVINGS Pasteurized and Homogenized Hand Dipped Ice Cream - 40 Flavors Farm Fresh Eggs and Groceries
chair Durwin Parks has had requests from other fairs to help them start a similar event. “It’s really a top-notch event because we pay attention to details,” he said. This year’s pedal tractor pull will take place on Friday, Sept. 16, on the upper baseball field, where stands will be placed to create a lane for the pullers. Registration will open at 5 p.m., with the contest starting at 6 p.m. The pedal tractor for the competition will be provided by the fair, but those who have their own are invited to bring them to display. The tractor pull is divided into divisions by age and gender. Last year, 147 juniors and 25 adults entered the pedal tractor pull. “We start with the youngest and work up in age,” Parks said. Each of the junior division first- and second-place finishers will receive a toy prize, and all junior entrants will receive a participation ribbon. All contestants will also receive a chocolate or white milk. “You could say it is powered by milk,” Parks said. “The 3- and 4-year-olds, they just pedal the tractor. The weight of the pan they’re pulling is two or three pounds,” Parks explained. The distance pulled by each competitor is measured, and the longest pull wins. “Everyone can get started easily. The farther you go, the tougher it gets. When it gets to the adults, it gets up to 300 pounds.” Age groups progress in two-year brackets with the weight increasing as well. The open division is for those age 15 through adult. Parks did not reveal any specific strategy for performing well, but he did compare it to an activity beloved by children and adults. “It’s a little different action than a bicycle, but if a person does a lot of bicycling, they will have an advantage,” he said. The pedal tractor pull fits in well with the character of the Solanco Fair. “It’s a non-electronic game that works well at a fair like Solanco,” Parks said. “You have all these people watching, clapping, and having a good time.” Parks’ involvement with full-size tractor pulls makes him an ideal person to chair the pedal tractor pull – plus he enjoys working with children. In traveling for his job, he sees many fairs, which reinforce his appreciation for the agricultural focus of the Solanco Fair. “Solanco really ranks right up there,” he said. “I applaud the fair board for resisting adding rides.”

TUG OF WAR
Milk Contest Welcomes Entries By Marcella Peyre-Ferry
Growing In Popularity
Participation in the Milk Contest at the Solanco Fair has been down in recent years, but that does not mean that local dairy farmers are not an important part of the fair. “It seems to come and go. We’d like to revitalize it if we could,” department chair James Hassinger said. Low participation does not mean that there are fewer dairy farmers, however. “For a while, FFA was submitting a lot of samples,” Hassinger noted. “We have a lot of Plain sect farms, but they don’t participate in this kind of thing.” Separate divisions are offered for youths and adults. Entrants are given collection bottles that they fill with milk from their bulk tank so that the sample represents the mixture of raw milk from their herd. Hassinger takes the samples to the Dairy Herd Improvement Association in Lancaster, where they undergo several tests. The bacteria test reveals how many colony-forming units are in a portion of milk. The somatic cell test is a significant indicator of milk quality, as it evaluates the evidence of immune responses to infection-causing pathogens. The preliminary incubation count assesses the number of cold-tolerant bacteria, which could damage milk components even when the milk is refrigerated. “We look at those tests and rank the samples,” Hassinger explained. The tests focus on the cleanliness of the farm’s dairy system. “It shows they have a milk system they keep very clean and their cooling system is more than adequate. Most farms have a really good milk quality.” Hassinger has been chairman of the department for many years. “I can’t remember when I haven’t done it,” he said. He attends the fair each year and enjoys the entire event. “I love it. I always enjoy going to the youth dairy show.” Dairy producers interested in taking part in the milk contest may contact Hassinger at 512-3012 for complete instructions on submitting a sample. “They can call, and I will make sure they get what they need,” he said. “We would like to see the program grow.”

Nate Galbreath remembers when he was a child and the tug-of-war was a big event at the Solanco Fair. Over the years, participation in the event has waned, but Galbreath is working to make it a very popular competition once more. Galbreath took on the job as chairman of the tug-of-war and the Iron Man contests three years ago. In order to generate new interest in the tug-of-war, sponsors were found and the prize money increased. The winning team this year will share $500, with the second place team taking home $250. Teams for the tug-of-war are composed of 12 members. Men and women of all ages and athletic condition are welcome to enter. “A lot of teams are businesses, and there are fire companies that get some firemen together,” Galbreath said. “There are big and small. The stronger and bigger the better.” Cleats are not allowed, but there are few other prohibitions. There is no total weight limit on teams, but a rule is being considered for next year. The competition is run on a double-elimination system, so each team is guaranteed at least two chances to pull. The first-round pairings will be made by random drawing. The event will take place on Thursday, Sept. 15, on the lower baseball field. Teams may sign up between 6:30 and 7:30 p.m., and the competition will begin at 7:30 p.m. Individuals who are interested in participating but are not already a member of a team may go to the sign-up area to potentially be matched with others looking for teammates. “If somebody doesn’t have a team we can sometimes put them together with one,” Galbreath said. The response from participants has been positive. “They all seem to enjoy it and talk about doing it the next year,” Galbreath said. Last year the competition grew to six teams, and Galbreath hopes the tug-of-war will continue to grow in popularity, drawing even more participants. “We’ve been building each year,” he said. “There’s some momentum. It’s a nice group event.” Galbreath enjoys being a part of the fair. “I’ve been involved with the fair my whole life,” he said. When he was in high school, he recalls leaving class to help pound in tent stakes at the fairgrounds. “It’s a nice community event,” he said. “You get to see people you haven’t seen in a whole year, and people get to see agriculture.” Solanco Fair website: www.solancofair.com
