Book It To The Quarryville Library For Skill-Building Good News! CEF After-School Clubs Return To Lancaster County BY ANN MEAD ASH
Quarryville Library program manager Sharon Roche (left), Quarryville Library director Susan Eshleman (center), and Millersville University grant program assistant Aubrey Laity are excited to offer the public a new digital literacy program. BY COURTNEY MENGEL
ocated at 357 Buck Road, Quarryville, the Quarryville Library now offers a digital literacy and workforce development program through a partnership with Millersville University. To the best of Quarryville Library program manager Sharon Roche’s knowledge, this is the first time that the library has partnered with a university. Prior to launching the program, Millersville University created the Office of Community Engagement, Governmental, and Economic Development with the purpose of helping adults, the local community, and nontraditional students. Staff in the new office researched statistics regarding technology education, learning access, and broadband networking, and realized that
Millersville University grant program assistant Aubrey Laity will be at the Quarryville Library on Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Thursdays from 3 to 7 p.m. to instruct individuals enrolled in the program, answer questions, and provide more information. “I work in-person with the participants of the grant,” said Laity, noting that she has seen first hand the need for the program and the impact it can have. The program consists of three courses, which teach keyboard skills, other computer skills for the workplace, and how to conduct a job search. Roche noted that the library offered digital programs remotely in the past, but attendance was low. “We can imagine that people are not able to train for these jobs at
Start Off the New Year
home (because they don’t have internet access), but the library is a great place to offer this program,” said Roche. “We have computers, we have Wi-Fi, and now we have Aubrey.” The program is intended for people age 18 or older who are unemployed, underemployed, or seeking a new career path. They should expect to commit approximately four hours per week from now until Sept. 30. Participants must also reside in the Quarryville Borough or the townships of Bart, Colerain, Drumore, East Drumore, Eden, Fulton, Little Britain, Martic, or Providence. There is rolling enrollment, and people can register by contacting Laity at 717-871-5951 or aubrey.laity@millersville.edu. the areas surrounding the Quarryville Library and Adamstown Library were in need of assistance. When the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry began accepting applications for the digital literacy and workforce development program grant, the university applied and was eventually named the recipient. Through the program, the Quarryville Library provides free computer and digital literacy training, which focuses on providing skills to assist participants in job seeking and job performance. To accomplish these objectives, there is a combination of in-person instruction and online course content. The program is intended to increase comfort with and experience in online learning with the hope of creating opportunities for lifelong learning and skill-building.
In the fall of 2021, Child Evangelism Fellowship (CEF) Good News Clubs went live again across Lancaster County and beyond. In the spring of 2022, in-person clubs are planned for elementaryage students in the school districts of Columbia, Conestoga Valley, ELANCO, Elizabethtown, Ephrata, Hempfield, LampeterStrasburg, Manheim Township, Penn Manor, Pequea Valley, Lancaster, Warwick, and Octorara. Virtual clubs will be offered in Cocalico, Donegal, Manheim Central, and Solanco school districts. A program for sixth- through eighth-grade students will also be starting at Martin Meylin Middle School in Lampeter-Strasburg School District. “We would like to get the clubs all restarted,” said Lisa Kilgore, director of CEF of Lancaster County, who noted that more than 30 clubs were meeting in the county prior to the onset of

COVID-19. “ We had 17 clubs last fall, plus a Zoom club, and we will have more than 20 this spring,” noted Kilgore. “It’s gradually rebuilding.” CEF is an international organization founded in 1937, with an active branch in Lancaster County since 1944. “Our purpose is threefold: to evangelize, disciple, and establish children in a local church,” said Kilgore. Clubs are open to any child who attends the school where the club meets. Usually a program for students in first grade through the highest grade level at the school is offered, but in some districts kindergarten clubs are available. Kilgore noted that each club is sponsored by a partner church. “When we finish our 14 weeks (of club meetings), we want (children) to stay connected if they want to. We try to connect them to that partner church,” she said. Good News Club meetings, which are held after school, involve a Bible lesson; a memory verse; songs; games; small group time, which is called Wonder Time; and missions. Each semester has its own theme. The spring 2022 series is called “The Early Church - God’s Power in Action.” The program has a

Christmas Tree Mulching Program Posted Trees from the nursery are utilized throughout the county park system. Moss, a former professor at Franklin & Marshall College and a founding member of the Lancaster Environmental Action Federation (LEAF), worked to promote the conservation of natural resources for the improvement of the environment of Lancaster County’s public parks and open spaces. In 2000, LEAF donated funds to the Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation for the creation of a nursery in memory of Moss. According to park officials, residents drop off approximately 1,000 Christmas trees each year, which produce 15 tons of mulch. The mulch is ideal for acidloving plants such as rhododendrons and azaleas and for many deciduous orna-

Mules Top Penn Manor, McCaskey - Now 4-1 bout that went into the third period, recorded a 5:14 fall that pushed the lead to 36-6. The Comets forfeited at 152 and capped their scoring with a first period fall at 160. Plastino’s fall wrapped up the action on the mat as Manor forfeited the last three bouts of the night. The Mules were back in action Saturday morning taking part in the Octorara Duals. Ten teams divided into two different pools with the top teams advancing to the finals. Solanco and West Chester Henderson each went 40 but it was WCH that finished undefeated on the day, handing Solanco a 48-18 defeat. “I thought we wrestled very well,” said Mendez. “The guys were feeding off of each other and wrestled intense. Plus, we were making the adjustments we needed to get the falls. I’m definitely seeing improvements.” The Mules defeated Unionville 4921, Octorara 59-13, Exeter Township 48-20, and New Oxford 54-18, before dropping to WCH 48-18. “I did hear that WCH was ranked 19th in the state as a dual meet team,” said Mendez.

against Donegal Tuesday. Monday Solanco got off to a slow start, falling behind 43-19 in the first half and never recovered in a 73-54 loss to Elizabethtown. Patrick Gilhool’s career-high 31 points proved to be the difference in this one. The Bears also converted 12-of19 free throws to help pull away. Yoder continued his consistent play, leading the way with 21 points. Ayden Maggs added 11. Hosting Donegal Tuesday the Mules got a balanced effort but couldn’t quite shake off another slow start. Down 25-10 at the half, Solanco rallied with a 16-12 third quarter and then exploded for 22 fourth quarter points while holding the Indians to 12 only to fall short by one. “It was a challenge to play three games in four days, but this group plays hard,” said Long. “We are constantly improving.”

tightened up the defense in the second quarter, holding the Mules to seven points while scoring 28 for a commanding 59-26 advantage at the break. “This was a tough matchup for us,” said head coach David Long. “Their pressure got to us in the first half, especially in the second quarter where turnovers led to easy baskets for them. I did not make the adjustments needed to keep us in the game,” he added. “I thought our zone defense looked good, they just hit a lot of contested threes early.” The scoring slowed in the second half as both teams all but traded baskets throughout. The Muhls finished with a slim 19-18 edge. Seven players scored for Solanco but only one, Jason Yoder, hit for double figures with an even dozen. first win of the season. Jenna Ehlers led the way with 14 points and Olivia Lasko followed with ten. The two combined for 21 rebounds and six blocked shots. One day later Solanco looked poised to pick up its second win in a clash at Donegal. They led 11-5 in the first quarter and 29-27 after three but the Indians went on a 14-7 run through the fourth to end Solanco’s hopes. “We just had too many turnovers and they converted with easy points down the stretch,” said McDowell. Lasko’s 12 points earned gamehigh honors. She also hauled in 15 boards. Ehlers (8 rebounds) and Olmeda combined for 14. In non-league play Saturday, Jan. 8, at West York, Solanco suffered a 58-18 loss to Eastern York. It was Solanco’s lowest offensive output of the season. With 23 points in the first quarter, the undefeated Golden Knights got out to a fast start. They held Solanco to four field goals for the game. “We’re just missing simple shots right now,” explained McDowell. “Eastern executed their half-court offense very well and hit several deep threes. Before we knew it, we were in a hole trying to dig out. “But this team never quits,” he continued. “They play 100% all the time, no matter they score. The fact that these young ladies try to do everything we ask is a bright spot every game.” Lasko and K. Janssen combined for 14 of Solanco’s 18 points. Toward Better Mental Health “Younger generations are more apt to accept, support, and encourage loved ones to get help (for mental health issues),” said Kim McDevitt, executive director of Mental Health America of Lancaster County (MHALC). “That’s a culture shift,” added McDevitt, who noted that data shows people are being educated about mental health. “That is the only way we will reduce the stigma,” she concluded. McDevitt noted that breaking through the stigma should
result in a changed view of overall wellness. “We will be looking at mental health the same way we look at physical health because they’re intertwined,” she shared. “If you aren’t mentally well, you will not be physically well (and vice versa).” Noting that variables associated with COVID-19 have propelled attitudes toward mental health forward, McDevitt pointed to specific areas where struggles have been clear, including with children and in workplaces. “I think if there’s ever a time to address good mental
health support in the workplace, it’s now,” noted McDevitt. “Supervisors need to understand that depression alters the person.” McDevitt added that while job expectations are necessary, flexibility is essential to help maintain employee mental wellness. “Someone who is struggling will be less productive, tardy, not meet deadlines, or be absent. The more (employees are supported) and connected to care, the more they want to give back, and the faster they will want to heal.” According to McDevitt, data is also showing that par-
ents of today’s children are likely to seek support for a child’s mental health needs. In addition, teachers and guidance counselors are available to children attending school. In Pennsylvania, young people age 14 and older may make their own mental health decisions. McDevitt noted that teenagers may contact MHALC directly to be connected to resources. Because the northeast portion of the U.S. has higher access to care, the prevalence of mental illness is lower, according to McDevitt. However, it still takes most people
who experience issues more than a decade to seek help. MHALC supports and resources, including an online
screening program, are available. For additional information, readers may visit www.mhalancaster.org.

Capital Blue Cross has been named one of the Best Places to Work in Pennsylvania for the fourth consecutive year, placing 23rd among large companies. According to Capital Blue Cross president and CEO Todd Shamash, the designation is awarded based on employees’ evaluations of the company. Most Capital Blue Cross employees began working remotely in March 2020 to best ensure their safety and well-being, while a small number of staff continued to work on-site to provide critical support services. As the COVID-19 pandemic evolved, Capital Blue Cross did, too, reinventing the way its employees work. Many now have full-time remote working status, while some have hybrid in-office/at-home schedules, and a smaller number work full time on-site. The Best Places to Work rankings were announced on
Saturday. Donors will be greeted by Cylo, the Lancaster Barnstormers mascot, and front office staff, who will help to unload donations. All food items should be nonperishable, with no glass containers. Suggested donation items include condiments, salad dressings, sugar, rice, canned soup, hot and cold breakfast cereals, canned fruit, chicken or vegetable stock, canned gravy, coffee, powdered creamer, tissues, paper towels, baby wipes, diapers, feminine

Bridge Project Plans Available
Fabric
R079392
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) invites the public to view an online plans display regarding the Route 3038 (Bridge Valley Road) bridge replacement project in Martic Township. The project involves replacing the bridge carrying Bridge Valley Road over an unnamed tributary to the Susquehanna River approximately a half-mile south of the Village of Pequea. The purpose of this project is to address deterioration of the bridge and provide continued safe and efficient crossing over the tributary. The project scope consists of replacing the existing 86year-old, single-span reinforced concrete slab structure with a single-span precast concrete arch bridge. New approach pavement, rock scour protection, and guide rail installation will also be included in the project. The total paving width will be 28 feet to accommodate two 10foot-wide lanes and two 4foot-wide shoulders. The bridge will be closed to all traffic for approximately three months during construction. The proposed detour route will use Route 324 (Pequea Boulevard) to Route 3017 (River Road). The project is currently in the design stage, and construction work is expected to take place in the 2023 construction season. A digital version of the information will be available to view online through Monday, Feb. 7. Information, including roadway and bridge plans and an interactive comment form, can be found by visiting www.penndot.gov/Regional Offices/district-8, clicking on Public Meetings listed under the District Links heading, choosing the Lancaster County box, and then clicking on Bridge Valley Road Bridge. The purpose of the plans display is to introduce the project and receive public input regarding any questions or concerns about the project. The project documents can be made available in alternative languages or formats if requested. To do so, contact Peter Roman, PennDOT project manager, at peroman@pa.gov or 717705-6187.
