Project Lifesaver Comes To Troop J - Lancaster Rotary Club BY COURTNEY MENGEL

had never heard about Project Lifesaver until 2019. That year, Kelly decided to put her father, Courtney Osborne, in an assisted living facility because his dementia had worsened. Prior to that, Courtney had wandered at least twice, and on one occasion, he got lost while driving and was found in Delaware County. On Oct. 18, 2019, Kelly received a voicemail at

What A Girl Wants To Do BY ANN MEAD ASH
Jen West, program director for Girls on the Run (GOTR), is exuberant about the programming the 2022 Camp GOTR will offer to area girls entering third, fourth, or fifth grades by fall. “It opens possibilities for new careers for girls … where they can see past elementary school to what will be available for them (in the future),” said West. Camp GOTR will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day from Monday, June 13, through Friday, June 17, at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology Greiner Advanced Manufacturing Center, 599 Chesapeake St., Lancast-
er. Mornings will feature opportunities to delve into the GOTR curriculum designed to boost confidence and appreciation as campers write, create, discuss, and connect. In the afternoon, girls will participate in excursions focused on careers for women, including public safety, health and medicine, machine technology, and entertainment. Girls will meet mounted police, learn about robotic surgery and orthopedics, make a keychain in a machine shop, and visit a multiplex cinema. GOTR has partnered with Thaddeus Stevens, UPMC, and Penn Cinema to make these field trips possible. See GOTR pg 3

high 13 points, including seven of Solanco’s 10 third quarter points, and Trent McDowell added 10, scoring five in the fourth quarter. At Warwick last Tuesday, the Section Two champs and playoff bound Warriors set the pace early, exploding for 29 points while holding the visitors to one field goal and a pair of free throws. The Mules generated the bulk of their offense in the fourth quarter when Osborne canned five of Solanco’s 10 points. As the only double-figure scorer, Bailey finished with 10 points. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL The girls’ basketball team put together its most successful week of the season, picking up a pair of wins against a single loss in a hectic fourday period. Looking to play spoiler as their season winds down, Solanco traveled to Manheim Central Saturday, Feb. 5. The Barons, vying for at least a share of the Section Three title, needed a strong second half to pull away with a 45-25 victory. Realizing that stopping league leading scorer Maddie Knier was the key, Solanco employed a couple of rotating defenses to keep her in check. Averaging 22.5 ppg, Sarah Landis, Jaelyn Olmeda and Kendal Janssen, with weakside help, held Knier to 14. “I thought we did a good job frustrating her and forcing her to take shots she normally doesn’t take,” said head coach Chad McDowell. Knier netted eight of those 14 in the first half but two of her teammates provided a third quarter spark. After a bucket by Olivia Lasko cut the lead to 27-17, Manheim’s Kaylie Kroll and Abbie Reed buried back-to-back triples. The Barons won the frame 14-7 for a 35-20 lead

Monday, Feb. 7) and Warwick (6226 on Tuesday, Feb. 8). The Mules hosted second place Manheim Central on Feb. 5 knowing that Baron sniper Trey Grube needed just 16 points to join the 1,000 career-points club. The junior highlighted an impressive shooting performance by the Barons with a game-high 32 points that included six triples. Teammate Collin Thompson also dropped six treys and added 20 points in the Barons’ 7140 road win. “That was a tough game,” said head coach Dave Long. “Central is a talented team and they shoot the ball well. We did not do a great job of keeping them out of the middle which led to them getting some easy looks. “Defensively, we need to improve,” he added. “We gave up 45 points in the first half.” The visitors netted 11 of their 14 three-pointers in the first half and held a commanding 45-26 advantage. Solanco, try as they might, and getting decent looks, finished with six treys, four in the first half, and three from Jaydon Yoder who led the Mules with 13. Noah Bailey added all ten of his points in the first half. He hit back-to-back treys in the second quarter. “Trey Riley came off the bench and did a nice job,” said Long. “He works hard at practice and has earned some time.” The visiting Octorara Braves placed three players in double figures and cruised past the Mules last Monday. They held a slim 10-13 first quarter edge but took control in the middle frames, outscoring the hosts 44-20. Bailey knocked down a team-

Scholarship Applicants Sought The Merit Shop Training and Research Center (MSTRC) invites area residents to apply for its Merit Shop Construction Scholarships. The purpose of the scholarship program - sponsored by ABC Keystone and administered by the MSTRC - is to assist individuals who are seeking to further their education in careers in construction. On average, 10 to 12 scholarships are awarded each year. To be eligible, an applicant must either be a permanent resident in the chapter’s service area - which includes Adams, Berks, Chester, Cumberland, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry, Schuylkill, and York counties - or be applying to or attending a chapter service-area trade school, college, or university program that is directly related to a construction career. Relevant fields of study include skilled trades, engineering, architecture, and construction management. Applications are reviewed by distinguished industry professionals, and scholarships are awarded solely based on merit. Applications and all reference forms must be received by 5 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 25. Finalists will be notified in May. To download application forms, visit www.abckeystone.org/ scholarships/. Questions may be directed to Stephanie Larkin, vice president of education, safety and workforce development, at 717-6538106 or stephanie@abckeystone.org. The MSTRC was established several years ago by Associated Builders & Contractors, Keystone Chapter (ABC Keystone) as a nonprofit fund whose mission is to provide financial assistance to students who have chosen construction-related career paths. The MSTRC, which is funded by members of the chapter, has awarded over $550,350 since its inception.

Though Solanco struggled at the free throw line, hitting just 12-of24, they were 6-for-11 in the fourth while the Warriors were 5-for-12. “Down the stretch, when we needed to, we went 4-for-6 from the line,” said McDowell. “Our defensive executing these past two games was the difference,” he continued. “And everyone contributed. “Kendal and Kara capitalized on key steals, and Jenna and Sarah gave us a spark off the bench just to name a few. Kara was also our emotional leader.” Lasko finished with a game-high 12 points and grabbed 10 boards. Peace (4 steals) and Ehlers (3 rebounds) combined for 16. Wood led with eight offensive boards and added five points, J. Janssen (3 pts, 2 steals) and J. Janssen (1 pt) rounded out the scoring.

He spends about 300 hours working on each painting, paying painstaking attention to detail from multiple photos he takes at the site. “Every brick, every stone in each building is exact,” he stated. “Nothing is estimated. I may be off by one, but I kind of doubt it.” In his painting of the Strasburg Rail Road, for example, he remembers counting 169 fence posts. His painting of the Veterans Memorial Bridge is exact down to the bridge’s bolts. His attention to detail and his focus on local landmarks has earned Hermansader an award from the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County. Subjects of Hermansader’s work include Donegal Presbyterian Church, Wheatland, the Fulton Theatre, the Hans Herr House and Linden Hall. He recently sold an original of the Conestoga House to its new owner and is in the process of selling a painting of Lititz Moravian Church to a Lititz resident. Although he admits he has slowed down a bit with his painting, he is still finding local inspiration. He’s currently working on a painting of Steinman Park in downtown Lancaster. And he can’t imagine giving up what he loves anytime soon. “I must have something with my brain and my eye, because when I see certain colors or patterns, I’m happy,” he said. “I’ve been blessed in my life. Anything I liked, I’ve painted, and I’ve been able to do what I wanted to do.” For more information on Hermansader’s work, visit w w w. h e r m a n s a d e r s a r t gallery.com, email him at tfhermansader@comcast.net or call him at 717-684-7899.

The Solanco Historical Society will hold its next program on Saturday, Feb. 19, at 1:30 p.m. at the society’s archives building, located across from the Robert Fulton Birthplace at 1932 Robert Fulton Highway (Route 222), Quarryville. Matthew Dodd will present “Songs and Stories of Old Canal Days.” Dressed in period clothing, Dodd will share what life was like for the men, women and children who ran the boats and tended the mules on the old canals, as well as for the lock tenders, who served from dawn to dawn at the canal locks. Dodd will perform a variety of songs from the time period as well as stories that put the songs in the context of the times. Dodd sings and plays the acoustic guitar, harmonica, banjo and mandolin. The program is free and open to the public.
