Women Empowering Women kicks off 2023 program

On Feb. 25, Colerain Church, 1923 Noble Road, Kirkwood, hosted the kickoff for Women Empowering Women’s 2023 program. The yearlong program was developed by Wesley Church in Quarryville to provide women in the local community with a support system and tools to navigate obstacles in their lives.

The theme of the kickoff was “Finding Peace in a Chaotic World,” and the event featured a talk from guest speaker Laura Troutman. This year’s program is inspired by Proverbs 31:25, which reads, “She is

clothed with strength and dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future.”

“We want to equip women with the information they need to navigate this time and the state of the world that we live in,” said Alexa Gruber, an organizer for the program. “We can get so focused on the uncertainty and negativity of life. God is raising a generation of women to be bold and not live in fear.”

Colerain Church will host meetings through the program on the last Saturday of each month from 9 to 11 a.m. until November. Meetings are free to attend, and child care will be provided.

Taking a seat at the table

MargaretThatcher once said, “If you want something done, ask a woman.” There’s a whole lot getting done in Lancaster County, because for the first time ever, all of the Chambers of Commerce in the county are led by women. Each woman brings a wealth of experience and a unique perspective to her role, but all of the leaders share a common goal: They want to make their community a great place to live and work.

Denise Grove, who started her role as executive director of the Elizabethtown Area Chamber of Commerce in February of 2022, said the job offers her a way to really connect with others. “As a lifetime resident of Elizabethtown, I had a strong desire to work where I could make a difference

and be a part of strengthening our community,” she remarked, a sentiment shared by Heather Valudes, who has been president and CEO of the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce since June of 2022. “I love Lancaster and the work that we are able to advance to make our employer community as strong as possible,” she said, noting that the Lancaster Chamber is countywide and represents nearly 1,500 businesses, almost half of the county’s workforce.

For Ashley Zell, who became executive director of the Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce in January, the job brings a chance to get to know her community. “The friends and connections made and the interaction with the Chamber members and community at our numerous different events are definitely the biggest rewards of

this position,” Zell said. The women also remarked that holding the job offers a chance to see their communities thrive. “It’s seeing kids dancing at the farmers market,” commented Rebecca Branle, who has been executive director of Venture Lititz since August of 2021. “It’s celebrating big wins with merchants. It’s watching this town become ever more alive with art, culture and community pride.” Her perspective matches that of Kristie Schmid, who has been executive director of the Manheim Area Chamber of Commerce since March of 2021. “I love seeing our community respond to the revitalization in town, the increase in businesses and the new community events,” Schmid said. “It’s fulfilling to put your time into something and then see others have pride in it as well.”

The Well-Led Life posts retreat

The Well-Led Life will host a women’s retreat from Friday, April 28, to Sunday, April 30, at South Mountain Inn, 143 N. Galen Hall Road, Wernersville. The retreat will offer Scripture-based activities to its participants and will cover a variety of topics on personal wellness. Registration is required to attend, and the deadline to register is Monday, April 3. To register, visit www.bobbiedull.com.

The retreat’s activities will be based on four pillars: Rest, Plan, Love and Serve. Bobbie Dull of Quarryville, founder of The WellLed Life, hopes that participants

will be able to use the pillars as a framework to make the changes that they want to see in their lives.

The first pillar, Rest, will focus on different ways that a woman can pace her life so she will be well-rested beyond literally getting enough sleep. This part of the program will offer women resources to help them schedule time to rest and refocus in daily life.

The second pillar, Plan, will offer materials on how to structure one’s life to allow space for major life transformations and goals. This includes topics such as how to say no, slow down, live intentionally and enjoy life.

Love, the third pillar of the program, will focus on self-care and utilizing internal resources to actualize one’s calling in life. “This means living your purpose and whatever you’re called to do outside of loving God and others,” Dull said. “We want to fill our cups so that we can overflow that love onto others.”

The fourth pillar, Serve, will elaborate on the importance of serving others, whether through working a job or acting as a caretaker at home.

Participants of the retreat will progress through a workbook as they cover each pillar. After the teaching portion of the topic, each retreatant will reflect on the material and have an opportunity to ask questions and discuss with others. In between the informational sessions, women on the retreat will have breaks for meals and other activities. Dull will have a one-onone follow-up meeting with each participant after the retreat to provide extra support.

This is the first retreat that Dull will offer through The Well-Led Life. Dull was inspired to create the program after weathering several challenges in her own life and realizing that she had utilized a few specific methods to overcome life’s obsta-

cles. “It was a super challenging year in 2021, but looking back after coming out of it, I went through these very clear steps that brought me closer to God,” Dull said. “Challenging things on the outside led to transformation on the inside. I rested and planned, and it allowed me to serve better.”

Fulton claims District gold; Urbine sets PA record

Solanco’s Jared Fulton, Blaine Plastino and Caden Rutt competed in the District Three/ South Central Regional wrestling championships at Spring Grove High School February 24-25 with an opportunity to secure a spot in the PIAA Championships. Fulton not only punched his ticket to the ‘big dance’ but did so with a gold medal finish.

Wrestling at 133, Fulton made short work of South Western’s Daniel Pierce, pinning the junior in 1:34.

“That was a huge win,” said head coach Tony Mendez.

“That was his 100th career victory. Without that limited Covid season, where he went 15-5, he probably would have hit that mark earlier.”

His quarterfinals matchup against Lower Dauphin’s Clayton Koser (29-8) went a little longer but the result was the same. Fulton secured the fall in 5:19 after pushing out to a 6-0 lead.

That set up a semifinals match opposite Boiling Springs’ senior Eli Bounds. Fulton took the full measure of Bounds, who entered the tournament with 31 wins, and settled for an 8-2 decision. Up 5-0 after two periods, Fulton gave up a takedown to start

the third but used an escape and a takedown over the last 1:15 to gain some distance.

“Bounds was a state medalist last year,” Mendez noted. “Jared controlled the match. He does a nice job of taking advantage of opportunities.”

In the title bout, Fulton pushed his season record to 36-3 with a tight 3-2 nod over top seed Rocco Fratelli of Northern (31-6).

After a scoreless first period, Fulton escaped to start the second period and worked a takedown for a 3-0 lead. Fratelli escaped with 36 seconds left in the second and escaped again at the 1:43 mark of the third but could get no closer.

“Fratelli beat Bounds by one point a week ago so we expected a close match,” said Mendez. “Everyone is good at this point in the season.

Plastino, also a senior, wrestled at 172. He opened Friday afternoon action against CV’s Abdoul Akala. Tied at 4-4 midway through the second period, CV’s sophomore went on to score a pair of escapes and a takedown to finish in front, 8-4.

He bounced back with a solid 5-1 win over Cumberland Valley’s Dayne Miller but was eliminated in his second consolation round by Isaiah Feeney of Dallastown.

“Last year Blaine was a regional qualifier but did not get a win,” Mendez noted. “That Dallastown kid caught him in a cradle. It was unfortunate.”

Plastino caps his season at 29-12.

INDOOR TRACK

Solanco’s Jared Fulton pins Lower Dauphin’s Clayton Koser in the quarterfinals of the South Central AAA Regional Championships held at Spring Grove High School February 24-25. Fulton went on to earn the 133-pound title with two more victories and is Solanco’s first 3A champ since 2018.

“I’m excited for Jared,” he added. “He wrestled extremely well and beat some tough kids and in doing so became our first regional champ since AJ Wilson in 2018. It’s an accomplishment for our program. I will say too, it was nice to see the group of kids that drove to Spring Grove to support Jared. They finally had a weekend off but made the drive to show their support. It meant a lot to both Jared and me.”

Fulton is Solanco’s 28th district champion and the first for Mendez.

Rutt’s path through regionals also went 1-2. The junior suffered a 2:54 fall against Gettysburg’s William Yordy, the eventual third place finisher, in the opening round but rebounded with a solid 8-4 decision over Ben Hoover of Chambersburg. He scored four takedowns en route to the win and never fell behind.

Rutt capped his season at 32-12 with an 11-4 loss to Palmyra’s Tyler Detwiler.

“This was Caden’s first trip to regionals, so it was a great experience,” noted Mendez. “I know he will build on that for next year. Both Blaine and Caden were competitive,” he added. “And it’s always nice to get a win.”

Speaking of winning, Solanco’s Katie Urbine set a new state indoor meet record in the pole vault, clearing 13-6 at the PA Track and Field Coaches Indoor State Championships at Penn State on Sunday, February 26. It was her second straight indoor title as the senior cleared 13-0 to win last winter. The 13-6 breaks Manheim Township’s Sydney Horn’s record of 13-3 set in 2020.

The victory came down to Urbine and Veronica Vacca of Mount Saint Joseph Academy who edged Urbine for the gold in last spring’s PIAA championships. Vacca recently cleared 13-5.25 to win the girls pole vault competition at the Millrose Games, leaving Urbine in second.

This time Urbine cleared 13-6, a personal best, on her first attempt. Vacca settled for second, clearing 13-0.

Urbine is ranked #3 in PA and #13 in US.

Women Empowering Women

frompg 1

During each meeting, participants will discuss a new topic and different ways one can address issues such as financial struggles, raising children, dealing with family dysfunction and taking care of one’s mental health. Participants range from high school students to women in their 60s, which allows women to provide each other with insight on various stages of life.

Gruber and Wesley Church’s director of congregational care, Beth Foss, decided to create the program after they saw a need in the community for a support system that focuses on women. The first year of the program sought to provide women with a toolbox of skills that can be used to address life’s struggles. “A lot of women were dealing with issues like

loneliness and developing their faith after (the COVID-19) pandemic,” Foss said. “Now that we have the tools to combat these things, we wanted this year’s program to focus on strength.”

Foss and Gruber chose this year’s theme to represent their goal of helping women build a foundation in faith and community. “It’s a time once a month for us to gather in strong community, encourage each other, have child care, grab a bite to eat together and just focus on something valuable that we all need to hear,” Gruber said.

Women Empowering Women is open to all women who are interested in participating and is not limited to those within the congregation. For more information, email Foss at bfoss@wesleyqville.org.

LIFT, which stands for Lifelong Improvements through Fitness Together, will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from March 28 to May 18. Individuals may choose to attend from 7:30 to 8:45 a.m. or 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster, or from 10:45 a.m. to noon at Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren, 1392 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville.

A free informational meeting will be held on Thursday, March 9, from 9 to 10 a.m. in the training room at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. All new registrants and returning registrants who have not participated since 2020 are required to attend. The deadline to register for the program is March 9.

SPRING HAM SHOOT 2023

Come shake off the winter blues with some fun & fellowship and win an Easter Ham

The FL Kids Team at Freedom Life Church will host a Daddy-Daughter Dance on Friday, March 17, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. The event, which will feature a ’50s Sock Hop theme, is open to girls accompanied by their fathers, grandfathers or uncles.

FL Kids director Gina Turk said this is the fifth time that the event has been hosted by the church. Because more than 260 people attended last year, the dinner and dancing portions of the ending will be separated.

“It was tight (last year), so we are going to have dinner and dessert downstairs in the large auditorium and the dance party in the elemen-

tary auditorium,” she said. “For dinner, it will be diner style - burgers, hot dogs and fries and ice cream bars and root beer floats for dessert.”

Attendees will enjoy games and activities throughout the evening, and there will be a photo booth available.

“We will have a DJ from the church. It will be a mixture of some old music, like from ‘Happy Days,’ and some modern stuff,” she said, adding that attendees are encouraged to dress in ’50s attire.

FL Kids at Freedom Life Church is the church’s youth group. Parents help plan other events throughout the year, including a Fall Festival and Easter Extravaganza. This year’s Easter event is set for Saturday, April 8.

For some of the Chamber leaders, the role is a full-time job. For others, it’s something they do in addition to other employment. As a financial adviser for Edward Jones, Jona Green serves as head of the Southern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce on a volunteer basis, but she’s just as committed to that role as she is her paid job. “The biggest reward is absolutely the connection to our schools and community,” said Green, who has been leading her Chamber since March of 2022. “Our reach is large, but our heart is rooted in service and making more things possible for our members.”

telling me to question my worthiness,” she stated. “If you, too, have a voice like that, learn to tell her to be quiet.”

ACCEPTING CONSIGNMENTS

Although each of the Chambers faces its own challenges, the directors all project positivity when it comes to their communities. “Right now, we see the biggest challenge for a number of our members to be finding enough employees,” said Kerry Meyers, who stepped down as executive director of the Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce after more than 11 years and is now executive assistant to Zell. “And for our small shops in Mount Joy, it is getting customers in their doors. We need the community to support small local businesses.”

Liz Ackerman, who has been executive director of the Northern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce since January of 2019, said her organization faces a challenge of keeping pace with expansion. “We are growing at an exponential rate,” she explained, noting that she values maintaining a close connection with all of the Chamber’s 430-plus members. “We pride ourselves on knowing every member’s name and understanding their needs.”

For some of the directors, being a female leader in the world of business has been a challenge they’ve faced with grace. “I have learned to embrace my leadership style and not shy away from opportunities to lead,” said Grove, noting that she attributes her success to surrounding herself with strong female role models. “Confidence in yourself is key. We all belong at the table, so be brave enough to pull up a chair. If you are afraid, do it anyway.”

That’s a feeling Branle said she understands. “My worst enemy has always been the negative voice in my head,

As committed as they are to their Chambers, all of the women have managed to find a work-life balance. Meyers has been married for 45 years and loves spending time with her two children and five grandchildren. Zell is raising a family of three with her husband, and they enjoy hiking and attending Faith Bible Fellowship Church. Valudes is the married mother of twin daughters, serves as secretary for the Paradise Township Lions Club and helps with Girl Scouts. Grove and her husband enjoy spending time with their seven children and eight grandchildren, and Grove is active with the Rotary Club of Elizabethtown, where she will serve as president beginning in 2025. Ackerman and her husband are raising two children, and she describes herself as a “serial volunteer” with numerous organizations. Branle and her husband have three children, and the family loves to bike, travel and play “very competitive family football games.” Green and her husband are raising two children who are active in their high school’s marching band, and she joked that her favorite hobby is “networking.” Schmid has been married for 22 years, has three girls and loves to read, shop and explore local breweries.

As for advice for other female leaders, each woman referenced striking a balance between being assertive and being kind. “Work with integrity,” Zell stated. “Be willing to humble yourself. Be respectful of others in the workplace and the community.”

Ackerman advised that women should also be kind to themselves. “Own your talents and always accept a compliment,” she remarked. “This is one of the hardest things to learn, but recognizing your strengths, especially when someone points them out to you, provides a confidence that will reach far beyond anything you can read in a book.”

And don’t underestimate what you can achieve, Schmid said, adding, “Never limit yourself. Find your passion and put your all into developing it so you can bring your best to the table.”

A question for Christians

In explaining why Eric Metaxas was chosen as the speaker for the Linville Hill Christian School spring banquet, head of school Matt Buckwalter quoted the school’s mission statement. “Linville Hill is a community of faith where students learn to think deeply about who God is as they discover their God-given purpose in preparation for a lifetime of service to the King,” said Buckwalter. Explaining that a few of the author’s many books are utilized in the high school curriculum, Buckwalter added, “(Metaxas’ words) help students think about looking back to those who’ve gone before us for answers to (the question), ‘How do we live in a time when maybe the prevailing values of the culture are out of sync with the heroes of faith from old?’ We need someone who can help draw our young people back to those voices.”

Metaxas will be the featured speaker at the Linville Hill 2023 spring banquet on Tuesday, March 28, at Beechdale Farms, 458 Beechdale Road, Bird-in-Hand. A meetand-greet will be held from 5 to 5:45 p.m. Appetizers will be served at 5:15 p.m., and dinner, which will feature pot roast and chicken cordon bleu, will begin at 6 p.m.

Dance frompg 8

“We’re trying to reach the community in different ways. (The Daddy-Daughter Dance) is something we look forward to every year, and it continues to grow,” said Turk. “It’s such a magical night as we watch beautiful young ladies … enter through our doors holding their dad’s hand. We love helping to create a special memory.”

Freedom Life Church is located at 447 Noble Road, Christiana. There is no cost to attend, but preregistration is required to help the team adequately prepare. Individuals can sign up at https://freedom.life/upcoming -events.

Metaxas is a New York Times best-selling author, known for his books “If You Can Keep It,” “Bonhoeffer,” and “Amazing Grace,” among others. He has also appeared as a cultural commentator on CNN, Fox News, and MSNBC, and he is the host of “The Eric Metaxas Show,” a daily syndicated radio program.

Buckwalter heard Metaxas speak twice since fall of 2022, and he was impressed. “Metaxas is a voice that is so important for our church and communities to hear,” said Buckwalter, who noted an effort is underway to provide sponsorship for the banquet to the pastors of the 70 congregations represented by Linville students. Delving into Metaxas’ past, Buckwalter pointed out that the author’s parents were immigrants from Greece and Germany who met in an English class.

“(Metaxas) has a very tangible grip on what America stands for (because) his family came here for that,” said Buckwalter, who called Metaxas a “phenomenal historian.” Buckwalter also noted that Metaxas’ most recent book, “A Letter to the American Church,” is “a wake-up call for Christians to think about what they are doing with their voices.” “Are they sitting silently or using the liberty this nation provides to speak in accordance with their convictions?” Buckwalter asked.

Linville Hill was started by a group of local families nearly 80 years ago. The elementary school at 295 S. Kinzer Road, Paradise, currently serves kindergarten through fifth grade. The upper school, which now serves grades six through 12, is located at 835 Houston Run, Gap. The upper school was first envisioned in 2016, with an internship program as a central feature. The program takes students to local businesses and organizations for six hours each Friday for 12 weeks in the fall semester and again in the spring. The program took off with 30 students the first semester it was offered. The two campuses now have an enrollment of 480 students. Sponsorships and tickets are available at www.linvillehill.org or at http://one.bidpal.net/lhcsspring23.
