In Dan Steinman’s office in Ephrata, there is a portable photo display called the Wall of Remembrance. The photos are of children who have died. The wall travels to BASIS (Brothers and Sisters in Support) events, and bereaved parents gather around it. “Every time we fold it up and take it (out), its getting fuller,” said Steinman, director of BASIS, who added that now the photos are put in a digital format so that they run on a screen at the event. “Last year a dad found his son, and he took his wife over and another couple joined them and they talked. It just brings people together.”

The Wall of Remembrance will be on display at the annual BASIS Breakfast, scheduled to be held at Yoder’s Restaurant & Banquet Center, 14 S. Tower Road, New Holland, on Saturday, April 27, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. This year’s

organization working to share the Gospel in the Middle East and to aid persecuted Christians. Schmidt has also been an adjunct professor with the former Philadelphia Biblical University and a Bible conference speaker. He is also a bereaved parent.

“We give (attendees) an opportunity to talk to other bereaved parents.”

Schmidt serves as the lead chaplain at Christ’s Home, Warminster and Paradise. He leads a team of seven chaplains for the organization, which ministers to disadvantaged children and senior adults. Schmidt chairs the board of Endure International, an

Fighting food insecurity in Lancaster County and beyond

The ninth annual Lancaster County Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) MobilePack event will be held on Friday through Sunday, April 5 through 7, at Willow Street Mennonite Church, 399 E. Penn Grant Road. During designated shifts on each day of the event, members of the community will gather to pack thousands of meals to help combat food insecurity

across the globe.

Children from kindergarten to 12th grade and adult volunteers may sign up for a specific twohour shift to pack food items. Packing shifts vary on each day, and student-to-adult ratios have been assigned to groups of volunteers to ensure the safety and efficiency of the event. Tasks that may completed sitting down will be available as needed.

Steinman first heard Schmidt speak at Harvey Cedars Bible Conference in New Jersey a few years ago. “(Schmidt’s) son had died,” recalled Steinman. “I liked the way he spoke.” Steinman returned to Harvey Cedars in the fall of 2023 to hear Schmidt again, and after that he contacted the chaplain about speaking at the BASIS breakfast.

Steinman said the event gives attendees plenty of time to converse with others who have experienced the grief of losing a child. “We start with a prayer, and we have the message,” he said. “We give (attendees) an opportunity to talk to other bereaved parents.” The breakfast

Support is what BASIS is all about, and the organization hosts several groups around the county, including those that meet in the greater Akron, Mount Joy, Paradise, Strasburg, and Quarryville areas. The newest group meets the third Thursday of each month at 10 a.m. at the Handi-Vangelism offices,

BASIS has recently begun producing quarterly podcasts, which can be found at www.hvmi.org/hopein grief. “People may not be sure whether to take part in a group or not,” explained Steinman, “but they hear (the podcast and) they may recognize how they feel and check the group out.”

Change of Pace South has moved into a new stage, establishing its own board of directors and adopting the name Oasis Women’s Ministry.

In 1974, Dona Fisher and the Friendship Foundation launched a weekly non-denominational women’s Bible study called Change of Pace. In 2000, a branch Bible study for women in southern Lancaster County was established as Change of Pace South by Carol Wever and Peggy Huber. Wever served as director until her death in 2019, and the director’s torch was passed to Jennifer Hatch.

The name Oasis was chosen because it reflects Change of Pace’s intention to offer a restful and refreshing pause on the journey

Solanco Historical Society will host a presentation on Saturday, March 16, at the society’s archives building, 1932 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville. The free program will begin at 1:30 p.m. All are welcome to attend.

Robert Frick will speak about industrialist and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. Carnegie, born in Scotland in 1835, immigrated to the United States and worked in a cotton factory in Pittsburgh as a youth. He gained employment with the Pennsylvania Railroad, where he rose to be superintendent of the railroad in 1859. He transitioned to producing steel, and in less than 20 years, he had become the dominant force in that industry. After the sale of his steel company in 1901, he turned his attention to philanthropy.

Frick served for 45 years in the Lampeter-Strasburg School District - three years as a teacher and 42 years as an administrator. The district’s first assistant superintendent, he spent his last 15 years as superintendent of schools. Since retiring, he has been drawn into the world of living American history. In addition to creating and

presenting historical programs that are later rewritten as prose for publication, he serves as a guide for walking tours focusing on the history of Lancaster.

The future of agriculture

The agricultural industry is continually evolving. In addition to an increase in food demand due to a growing global population, factors leading to change include consumer habits, technology, and policies. In the future, the agricultural sector

may look different in several ways.

Bigger digital footprint

Social media has transformed many industries, and it can do the same for agriculture. Farming supply chains can communicate with one

another by getting feedback from customers in real time through social media. However, agricultural operations may have to devote extra time to manage social media presence, especially since misinformation is so widespread on social media.

Apart from social media, local farmers may increase their efforts to utilize mobile apps and direct-to-consumer purchasing options. The global pandemic helped businesses reimagine takeout and curbside shopping. Local farms may consider marketing to the home-shopping community, providing ways to deliver produce, fresh meat and poultry, and other items direct to customers’ homes.

Regenerative agriculture

The future may feature a significant shift in the way farms source their ingredients. Farmers may try regenerative agriculture, which describes farming and grazing practices that may help reverse climate change by rebuilding soil organic matter and restoring degraded soil biodiversity.

Technological advancement

Technology will likely continue to play important and growing roles in farming operations. New agricultural technologies can collect data on soil and plant health and produce results in real time. Precision farming technology can be developed to deliver integrated solutions no matter the size of the operation.

Shift in what products are grown

Certain crops are being utilized in new and innovative ways, and they’re only the start as consumers have expanded their views on plant-based foods and products.

While there’s no way to see into the future, individuals can likely expect changes in the agricultural sector in the decades ahead.

a shift are encouraged to make a minimum financial donation to FMSC. Each minimum donation will cover the cost of more than 200 meals, which is the average amount of food one volunteer packs during a shift. In addition to the financial donation, FMSC invites participants to bring a nonperishable food item on the day of their chosen shift. Requested food donations include peanut butter, rice, pasta and low-sugar breakfast cereal, and FMSC will distribute all donations to the Lancaster County Food Hub in Lancaster city.

Lancaster County FMSC MobilePack chairperson Lora Magnus Wenger first learned about the organization during a mission trip she took to Haiti in 2013. Wenger was volunteering with nonprofit

organization Mission of Hope, which partnered with Haitian orphanages, schools and nonprofits to distribute FMSC meals to roughly 50,000 children per day. Upon returning to the United States, Wenger said she was inspired to research the organization, and she signed up for an FMSC MobilePack event in New Jersey. “I was very impressed by the organization and its goals and methods,” Wenger added. “I decided that our community could do this too; I came back and talked to my church about it, and we hosted our first event the following year.”

Since the first MobilePack event at Willow Street Mennonite Church, volunteers have packed and paid for more than 2 million meals for communities around the globe. Although the goal of the event has

remained the same more than a decade later, certain changes have been made over the years. Due to inflation, the cost of each meal has slightly increased, and hand-washing stations have been made available during shifts in recent years to meet government safety regulations. A few years ago, FMSC began accepting donations for the Lancaster County Food Hub to battle food insecurity in the local community in addition to efforts in other countries.

“Living in the United States, we are incredibly blessed,” Wenger said. “I think it is important for us to not only recognize how blessed we are but to be willing to share our blessings with others. It is also a good opportunity for young people down to age 5 to be involved in sharing and caring for others.”

During the event, volunteers will pack boxes of food that will be distributed to communities around the globe.

Women’s event from pg 1

Jeff Wisot, a pastor based in Oregon, gave a presentation on this year’s theme. “Each year, God has put a different focus on our hearts,” said Alexa Gruber, who helps organize the Women Empowering Women event series. “The kickoff set a great foundation for the rest of the year.”

This is the third year of the program, which was created in 2022 by Gruber and Wesley Church’s director of congregational care, Beth Foss. Foss noticed an increased number of women in the community who sought help with issues such as budgeting, navigating marital

challenges, raising children and taking care of aging parents. As more women came to Wesley Church for guidance, including those from outside the congregation, Foss and Gruber recognized common issues that members of the community were struggling with; they decided to introduce the Women Empowering Women program to serve as a support network and a source of encouragement.

“We’re seeing changes in the world that are causing depression, anxiety and other mental health issues among children and adults,” Foss said. “This year’s program will

detail how we can stay rooted in the truth, which doesn’t change, despite our ever-changing society.”

The program draws attendees from various stages of life, from young women in college to grandmothers and older generations. The diversity in the participants’ ages allows women to share their unique experiences and perspectives with one another to strengthen the community.

“It really is women empowering women across generations,” said Foss. “Ladies feel safe to be themselves here. It’s very cool to see the dynamic between them and the

support they offer each other.”

Another of Foss and Gruber’s goals in creating the program was to establish a safe space where women feel comfortable to discuss the issues they encounter in daily life. The pair tries to highlight hot topic themes and relevant subjects each year; last year’s theme was “Finding Peace in a Chaotic World.”

The next session will be held on Saturday, March 23, from 9 to 11 a.m. at Colerain Church. For more information, email Foss at bfoss@wesleyqville.org or search for “Women Empowering Women (Wesley Network)” on Facebook.

Uncharted Lancaster to present annual treasure hunt

For the past three years, Uncharted Lancaster has held an annual real-life treasure hunt involving hundreds of people that has given away $4,700 to a handful of participants while raising more than $10,000 for local nonprofits like the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County (HPT).

This year, the tradition will continue with the Raiders of the Golden Osprey Adventure. The treasure hunt will kick off on Saturday, April 6, promising a five-week expedition,

weekly cash prizes and the chance to win a share of $3,250.

Players will explore Lancaster and Lebanon counties over five weeks as they race to uncover the legendary Golden Osprey, a fictional treasure hidden more than two millennia ago by ancient Phoenician explorers who discovered the Susquehanna River. There will be rewards issued for first-, secondand third-place winners.

An honorable mention will go to the fourth-place team with the highest score

on the leaderboard (and not among the first three Golden Osprey finders). All four teams will receive a full-size 3D printed commemorative Golden Osprey souvenir.

To play, participants must purchase a treasure diary; register a team beginning on Saturday, March 16; check Uncharted Lancaster’s website every Saturday at 9:30 a.m. for that week’s challenges; and solve the weekly riddles and decipher the clues to unlock segments of the treasure’s GPS coordinates.

The Raiders of the Golden Osprey Adventure requires participants to utilize local

history knowledge, puzzle-solving skills and the ability to navigate non-level terrain, making it a game of skill suitable for adventure enthusiasts of all ages.

Proceeds will benefit the HPT, with a portion from every treasure diary purchase going to the nonprofit. Funds going to HPT will contribute to its digital archiving project, which aims to scan the 160,000 artifact collection and preserve Lancaster County’s architectural heritage.

For more information and to purchase a treasure diary, visit www.uncharted lancaster.com. Weekly clues will begin on April 6.

Riddell, Cindy Riker, and Vicki Zurbrick. The board has been meeting regularly to complete the steps needed to form the nonprofit Oasis ministry and to carry on the mission and vision that began 23 years ago.

The Bible study will continue to meet at Providence Church, 269 Cinder Road, New Providence, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. on Wednesdays throughout the school year.

The next session will begin on March 20 and conclude on May 1. Using the study guide “When You Pray,” attendees will examine six types of prayer in the Bible, with lessons taught by Kelly Minter, Jackie Hill Perry, Jen Wilkin, Jennifer Rothschild, Jada Edwards, and Kristi McClelland. This study aims to inspire prayerful conversations with God, whether alone or with others, and to demonstrate how prayer strengthens relationships and brings unity. Workbooks will be available to purchase at the first session.

In-person registration will begin on March 20 at 9 a.m., when fellowship time and breakfast refreshments will be available. The group will formally start at 9:30 a.m. with worship in music, followed by a 30-minute video teaching and then small group discussion for the remainder of the event. Oasis includes a children’s ministry, which provides supervision, snacks, crafts, and Bible stories for children of all ages. A freewill offering is received each week.

For more information or to preregister, call or text Gail at 717-799-8583.

Seniors’ group sets meeting

The Strasburg Area Senior Citizens will meet on Wednesday, March 20, at 1 p.m. at the Strasburg Fire Hall, 203 W. Franklin St., Strasburg. Keyboard artist Nick Viscuso will present music, and potluck refreshments will be available.

Guests are welcome. There is a nominal registration fee payable at the door.

Strasburg Seniors is a nonprofit organization chartered in 1966 for the recreation and benefit of area residents age 50 and older. Meetings are generally held on the third Wednesday of every month, and the club also holds a summer picnic and yearly Christmas party as well as outings and trips.

For more information, call Jill at 717-239-1530.
