Solanco Class Of 2020 Set To Graduate The virtual graduation ceremony celebrating Solanco High School’s Class of 2020 will be broadcast at 6 p.m. on Friday, June 5, on www.solanco.k12.pa.us. If possible, a live ceremony will be held on Friday, July 31, at the school’s football field. Information about the July 31 event will be announced later. The pre-recorded ceremony will feature speeches by district superintendent Brian Bliss, high school principal Scott Long, Distinguished Speaker Steve Risk, valedictorian Brandon Daniel-Morales, and salutatorian Caroline Arrowsmith. Finishing up his senior year was not as exciting as Brandon expected it to be, thanks to the shutdown orders announced on March 13, but he has tried to come to terms with it. “I’m not

worrying about what could have been,” Brandon said. Brandon took Advanced Placement (AP) European History, AP Research, AP Calculus, AP Spanish, AP Physics, AP English, and gifted applications this past semester. “I took the classes because they were interesting to me. I wanted the academic rigor,” Brandon explained. Caroline also took AP Spanish, AP Research, and AP Calculus. Through the dual enrollment program, she completed speech and marketing classes online from HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College. Caroline is looking forward to starting her animal science studies at Penn State University in the fall. She wants to eventually work in the dairy industry to help farmers be more profitable, efficient, and sustainable. “I’ve been excited for college for a couple years now,” Caroline said. “I feel See Solanco Graduation pg 2

Parrish attended Bloomsburg University, earning an undergraduate degree in psychology in 1999 and a graduate degree in special education in 2004. She received principal certification at Penn State University. Parrish also holds certifications in English, midlevel mathematics, and special education. Prior to this year, Parrish had served as learning support teacher and eighth-grade teacher at George A. Smith Middle School since 2004. Solanco superintendent Brian Bliss said he is thrilled that Parrish will be Bart-Colerain’s new principal, adding, “She demonstrates a child-centered approach, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to ensuring each child is inspired every day.”

Parrish’s first day as Bart-Colerain’s principal will be Wednesday, July 1. “I am beyond excited to join the Bart-Colerain family next year and continue the great work they are doing,” Parrish said. “Having been in the district See Principal pg 2

Caroline was also involved with several dairyrelated local and state organizations, which she references in her speech. “If you’re thinking about joining, just do it,” she encouraged. “If you don’t like it, you don’t have to come back, but you’ll probably get more from it than you think you will.” Brandon was also active in clubs, serving as vice president of both NHS and SNHS and as a charter member of the Social Action Club. Making a positive impact was important to Brandon and something he exhorts his classmates to do in his graduation speech. It is advice he wants high school students to take to heart. “It’s easy to get sucked up in academics, but look past that,” Brandon advised. “Try to improve the environment of the school. Make it a good place for future generations to come to.” In his speech, Bliss acknowledges the grief graduates and their loved ones may be feeling regarding the end of school and the loss of a traditional commencement. During her speech, Caroline encourages her peers to keep moving forward and pursue their passions. “ We’ve been working toward (graduation) for so long, and we feel let down, but there will be other milestones,” she said. “We’re still gaining things in these moments, even when it doesn’t feel like it.”

District Budget Adoption Deferred At the May 18 Solanco School District board meeting, business manager Sandy Tucker announced that adoption of the district’s final 2020-21 budget will be deferred until the school board meeting on Monday, June 15. The final budget approval had originally been expected on June 1. The deferred approval date will provide Tucker with additional time to review potential new legislation and financial information received from Harrisburg and to better understand the impact on the local economy and district revenue sources caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, the district anticipates a decrease up to 20% in earned income tax revenue and a 50% decrease in transfer tax revenue collected by the district. The lost revenue and the deficit it will create in the budget has made it

necessary to include a millage rate increase of 1.25% in the proposed final budget. Solanco’s current tax rate is 10.8251 mills, and the proposed 2020-21 millage rate is 10.9604. The millage rate increase would result in a property tax hike of $13.53 per $100,000 of assessed home and property value. The median homestead value in Solanco is $197,000. The property tax for the average homeowner would increase by $26.66. The tax increase would generate an additional $320,000 in revenue for the Solanco budget. The proposed final $60.8 million budget is available for public review by calling 717-9401513. To make tax payment easier, the Solanco business office is considering implementing a credit card payment system and also providing a drop box option for payment.

Chicken Barbecue Will Support West Lampeter Fair By Dayna M. Reidenouer

Life looks a lot different for many people right now, but one thing has not changed: The smell of chicken barbecue has been filling the air on Saturday mornings in several municipalities. That pattern will continue in Lampeter on Saturday, June 13. “We thought with the way everything’s going, everyone would want a break from cooking,” West Lampeter Fair board chair Don Welk said when announcing the fair’s annual chicken barbecue will be held as planned on June 13 at the fairgrounds, 851 Village Road, Lampeter. “Buy some extra West Lampeter Fair directors hope to tear down the food pavil- halves so you don’t have to cook ion and build a new structure for the milkshake, burger, pork later on,” he suggested. The barbecue sale always takes barbecue, and soup stands in time for the three-day event in place on the second Saturday in September. A chicken barbecue sale on June 13 will help to June, and Welk estimated that it raise money for the project. has been held for at least 50 years. “They used to have it there at the fairgrounds when I was a kid,” he added. Fair director Mark Myer has run the sale countless times, but he stepped back this year. Welk, who had been in charge of the event about 25 years ago, is the interim chair. Myer is helping behind the scenes and sharing his expertise. Store Open Regular Hours The proceeds from the chicken barbecues help to maintain the See Our Website for facilities on the fairgrounds and PARKING LOT PICKUP OPTION to run the fair in September. It is the only fundraiser for the fair, although the organization garners funds from selling advertisements in the premium books and from food sales during the fair. This year, the earnings will also help to cover the costs of replacing the food pavilion, which the board of directors had planned to tear down and rebuild on the 1955 Beaver Valley Pike, just N. of Quarryville same footprint this summer. For young people involved in FFA programs around the commonwealth, one of the high points of the year is the Pennsylvania FFA state convention held annually at Penn State University in early June. Typically, approximately 1,500 FFA members attend the convention, which focuses on career and leadership development events during interactive and hands-on competitions or activities. The in-person state convention has been canceled and will be replaced with a virtual state convention that will be held the week of Monday, June 8. Readers may contact Michael Brammer, executive director of the Pennsylvania FFA Association, at mbrammer@paffa.org or 717580-4864 for more details. As a sign of its support for seniors who will not have the opportunity to attend an in-person convention this year, the Lancaster County Agriculture Council is providing 2020 FFA state convention T-shirts at no charge for graduating seniors in FFA chapters in Lancaster County that responded to its offer. They include Manheim Central, Pequea Valley, Penn Manor, Solanco, Lampeter-Strasburg, Grassland, Elizabethtown, Lancaster County Career and Technology Center, and Ephrata. Most teachers from the programs came to the Farm and Home Center in Lancaster on May 26 to pick up the shirts for their chapters. Seniors recognized included Elizabethtown students Emma Musser, Julia Neideigh, Jolynn Rosenberry, and Josh Neidig; Ephrata students Maxine Bodnari, Clara Bollinger, Mary Campbell, Genna Ellis, Carsyn Greene, Abigail Kachel, Katelyn Sauder, and Abigail Zorrilla;

The chicken barbecue sale takes place on the fairgrounds and has always been operated as a drive-through because there are no facilities to eat on-site during the summer, Welk said. That makes this event ideal for a fundraiser during social distancing. The only significant difference this year is that tickets will not be available for presale. Instead, the food will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis. Only cash will be accepted as payment. All of the volunteers will wear gloves and masks. For the sale, traffic will enter the fairgrounds from the firehouse entrance on Village Road, then proceed through the fairgrounds, exiting onto Lampeter Road. Welk noted that if the weather is nice and the ground is dry, vehicles may be directed into a serpentine pattern on the fields so that traffic does not back up on Village Road. The entire barbecue sale is run by volunteers. The fair queen typically participates, and Welk said he hoped 2019 fair queen Jessica Herr will be able to attend. The new crop of fair queen candidates also usually helps with the sale so the individuals can gain insight into what the fair is about. Welk planned to discuss the attendance by the 2020 fair queen candidates with coordinator Anita Martin. Fair directors begin grilling the chicken halves starting around 6 a.m. on the day of the sale. This year, the chicken should be ready for purchase by 10:30 a.m. on June 13. Chicken halves will be available with or without meals, which will include applesauce, rolls, chips, dessert, and a beverage. Welk said that whoopie pies are currently planned as the dessert. The West Lampeter Fair is set for Wednesday through Friday, Sept. 23 to 25. Planning for the fair is continuing through phone calls and emails. “As of now, the fair is still a go,” Welk commented. “If things don’t go into the green (shutdown phase), we might have to postpone it. (Even if we have the fair), I’m sure it will be totally different than what we’re used to.” Readers who would like more information about the chicken barbecue or to volunteer with the fair may call Welk at 717-468-4426.

WellSpan, Letterkenny Partner On The Front Lines Of COVID-19 WellSpan Chambersburg Hospital, watched a local television newscast in early April that highlighted Letterkenny Army Depot’s upholstery shop, which produced around 4,800 cloth masks to protect its own employees. He wondered if a similar effort or collaboration could help protect a portion of WellSpan Health’s 20,000 employees. Massimilla shared the information about Letterkenny’s efforts with WellSpan Health’s performance improvement team, comprising hospital officials and engineers. According to Keith Noll, senior vice president - chief administrative officer for WellSpan Health, the team would later be nicknamed the “MacGyver team” after the star of the television series who uses unconventional problem-solving skills to save lives. The team, led by Debra Ruckert, senior director of performance improvement at WellSpan Health, utilized unconventional designs and paths to production that incorporated local manufacturers and distilleries, which had capabilities of producing anything from hand sanitizer to intubation devices and masks. Members of the hospital’s team visited Letterkenny Army Depot to learn more about its manufacturing capabilities. Typically, the upholstery shop at Letterkenny focuses on production

Birdwell Earns Language Award The Department of Languages and Cultures at Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania, Bloomsburg, named the winners of its outstanding achievement awards in foreign languages for 2019-20. Ian Birdwell of Nottingham was the co-winner for Russian and Eastern European Studies.

Shawn Hind, Letterkenny Army Depot (center), discusses isolation gown materials with (from left) WellSpan Health performance improvement team members James Eichelberger and Srinath Asuri and Letterkenny’s Logan Robinson at the Army depot’s upholstery shop on April 22. of items such as canvas tents, kitchens and vinyl products. As discussions moved forward and the partnership took shape, Letterkenny shared its mask design for producing cloth community masks. Back in York, a couple sheets of plastic, garbage bags and a rain poncho were used in figuring out a prototype that would allow WellSpan Health to eventually mesh a material design to create isolation gowns. Letterkenny reallocated resources to adequately staff its upholstery shop to begin gown production. While the initial order was to make 70,000 protective gowns,

Noll said that there was enough material to support production of at least 225,000. Letterkenny expected production to take six to eight weeks to fulfill the first order, while it provided weekly deliveries to a WellSpan distribution site. Noll added that innovative thinking and partnering with manufacturers throughout the five counties that WellSpan Health serves can allow the system to be less reliant on the national supply chain and be better prepared moving forward. For more information about WellSpan Health, readers may visit www.wellspan.org.

The outstanding achievement award in foreign language goes to a graduating senior in each language who has excelled in the major and in all work at the university, has successfully participated in extracurricular activities, and is recommended by the majority of faculty in the major language track.

As potential supply shortages became imminent for WellSpan Health because of COVID-19, leaders within the organization took a proactive approach by fostering relationships to secure necessary resources needed to care for communities and staff members. These efforts included forming a special partnership with Letterkenny Army Depot near Chambersburg. On May 1, Letterkenny started production of 70,000 protective gowns for WellSpan Health to help bolster the local health care system’s supply chain as it continues to navigate through the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, Letterkenny produced prototypes for cloth face masks for WellSpan Health, which has shared the designs with other community partners. Letterkenny Army Depot has been supporting frontline U.S. military efforts since the 1940s and stepped up to join a much different fight to protect people. In February, prior to its first patient testing positive for COVID-19, WellSpan Health was reacting to supply chain demand as production of personal protective equipment (PPE) in China was diminished due to the country’s battle with the pandemic, and PPE was redirected to U.S. cities already experiencing COVID-19. Meanwhile, John Massimilla, chief operating officer and vice president of administration for

enjoyed baking cakes and organizing birthday parties. Following high school, she worked for a year in a hotel before attending culinary school in Leicester, England, where she earned a degree in hospitality management. Knowing she wanted to specialize in pastries, Notter worked evenings and weekends for a small bakery in Melton Mowbray that focused on European-style pastries. At the age of 19, Notter completed culinary school and moved to Germany to work full time in the pastry field. She was employed by a large bakery that distributed products to 10 of its own pastry stores. For more than two years, Notter moved between departments, learning how to make decorative items, layered cakes, and tortes. At the same time, she learned to speak German. “People were friendly and welcoming. It was a wonderful experience,” said Notter. From there, Notter moved to Luzerne, Switzerland, to work in chocolate. She created bonbons, bars, and other confectionary treats for four months on a work

with Max Felchlin AG as a U.S. sales professional. For the Culinary Olympics in Germany, the team was required to create a five-course menu, four different finger foods, three appetizer plates, four plated desserts, and four petit fours. Notter was responsible for the desserts and the petit fours. Notter noted that the competition was steep. “The national teams from Norway, Sweden, and Finland really dominated,” said Notter, who lauded the team from Switzerland as well. “They’re very innovative.” Notter said that in addition to the competitions, she especially enjoys working for Max Felchlin AG, which is a family business that has been producing chocolate for more than 100 years. “We do classes and training for customers and tours of Switzerland,” said Notter, who added that her ability to speak German and her experience with the culture is helpful. “I love being out in the industry, and I am working with some of the best products in the world.” More information about the Culinary Olympics may be found at w w w . o l y m p i a d e - d e r -koeche.com/en.
