Thyme To Turnip The Beet: School Starts Garden Club BY COURTNEY MENGEL

t all began with a conversation between Providence Elementary School principal Billie Corbin and Solanco School District psychologist Marc Riccomini. Corbin and Riccomini were talking about the amount of land they have at the school, so they came up with the idea of planting a garden and allowing students to participate. This idea was put into motion during the spring of this year, when Corbin and Riccomini selected 10 students from kindergarten through fourth grade. Permission letters were then sent to the students’ parents. “We wanted to start small to make sure we were successful because we didn’t know how it would go,” said Corbin. To begin, third- and fourth-graders used graph paper to map out the garden and decide what vegetables and herbs they wanted to plant. The students did the math to calculate the spacing of everything, and they built a fence around the area. The students planted tomatoes, eggplants,

I

cucumbers, peppers, watermelon, squash, and some herbs. After everything was finished, Corbin and the students planned to meet periodically over the summer to maintain the garden, water the plants, and taste some of the vegetables. “Next time we meet (in July), I’d like to teach them how to do a refrigerator pickle,” stated Corbin. Corbin noted that she hopes to design a wooden sign for the garden that has the names of the club members on it. She also mentioned that she wants to get a scarecrow and lay kindness rocks in the garden. As vegetables ripen, Corbin plans to either drop off the food at the students’ houses or donate it to a local food bank. “Our idea behind the garden club was that we want our kids to enjoy school and know that learning happens in the classroom, but learning can happen outside of the classroom as well and it can be fun,” said Corbin. “School is a fun place, and we can build on the interests of the kids so they can learn something they can use when they’re older.”

In 2010, there was an explosion on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig located in the Gulf of Mexico, which resulted in what is believed to be the largest marine oil spill in history. After hearing about the oil spill, something sparked in Washington Boro resident Tracie Young. “I saw all those animals covered in oil, and I was so upset,” recalled Tracie. “I cried every day.”

Do You Know Your Neighbor?

SOLANCO EDITION

BY COURTNEY MENGEL

Driving through southern Lancaster County, people are met with picturesque views of lush and verdant farmland. Surrounded by this seeming abundance, it might be difficult for people to imagine that poverty and homelessness exist in the Southern End. But for some residents, these situations are an everyday reality. Fortunately, Solanco Neighborhood Ministries (SNM) can help. Located in Quarryville at 355 Buck Road, SNM has been around for nine years.

The ministry’s mission is to provide a support network, promote personal and spiritual growth, increase self-sufficiency, and break the cycle of poverty within the Solanco community. SNM connects families and individuals with resources that are intended to ensure their sustainability and suspend the crisis they’re experiencing. On Wednesday, July 28, SNM will host its first social event. The rain-or-shine Do You Know Your Neighbor? event will take place at Britain Hill Venue and Vineyard, 790 Little Britain Road

North, Quarryville, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn more about the ministry through the eyes of families and individuals who sought assistance from SNM. There will be a photo gallery where these families and individuals will share the impact that SNM had on their lives. There will also be food trucks, wine, live music, and a silent auction where participants will be able to bid on hot air balloon rides, baskets from Central Market in Lancaster, gift cards from restaurants, and more.

“I think it will be really eye opening for people to look at the photo gallery and read the stories,” said executive director Teresa Dolan. “People will see how much need is down here and see that the families we help are no different than any other family.” Entry to the event is free, but freewill offerings will be accepted. Although it is not required, registration is encouraged. Registration can be completed at https://bit.ly/neighborhood ministries. For more information, call 717-786-4308 or email office@SNMinistries.org.

We encourage civic and fraternal groups, schools, churches, scouts, and other local organizations to submit news releases of general interest to the majority of our readership. Primary consideration is given to dated articles of an informative nature–activities and events of local interest sponsored, presented, or planned by area organizations and institutions. Related photographs of good quality are encouraged also, but complete picture identification must be included. Undated articles of general interest are used as space permits. All articles must contain a contact name and telephone number.

Wrightsdale Baptist Church marked a Celebration Sunday on June 13 in honor of paying off the church mortgage in full. On May 2 during a special Love My Church Sunday, the church leadership invited the congregation to give special gifts to go toward paying down the church mortgage. The leadership announced in advance that all money given that weekend, either in-person or online, would go directly to paying off the mortgage. The church raised $75,000, which was enough

to complete the mortgage payoff. In less than a decade, the church paid off a mortgage that originally totaled more than $1 million. The Celebration Sunday on June 13 included worship, video greetings from former pastors, a mortgage-burning ceremony, and a vision-casting message from pastor Ryan Day. Following the worship service, the congregation assembled on the church grounds for the dedication of a weeping cherry tree to commemorate God’s faithfulness to the church. The tree is also meant to be a living reminder that the church should seek to keep growing and prospering in the future. The event concluded with more than 250 people attending a picnic and chicken barbecue at Little Britain Park. The meal included chicken prepared by the Wakefield Lions Club.

The exhibition is arranged chronologically, with each section titled after contemporary quotations that also communicate changing popular perceptions about Coney Island through the generations. Throughout the exhibition, artifacts display how the modern American massculture industry was born at Coney Island. Moore: “Journey Into Darkness,” a story in four parts, and “Blake’s Story: Revenge and Forgiveness.” At the time, these three books were released as Civil War and Native American historical fiction for middle grade through adult readers. “Summer at Stewart Creek” includes photo illustrations of an HO-scale model railroad that the author created when envisioning the book’s setting. The cover photos for this book feature the Tahoo, a locomotive in the collection at the Pennsylvania Railroad Museum. The Tahoo was used on the real-life Virginia and Truckee Railroad in Nevada. All Moore’s titles are available at the Landis Valley Farm Museum, Cricket’s Antiques and Garden Market on Route 322 in Glenmoore, and online at www.jarthurmoore.com, Barnes and Noble, and Amazon. Books can also be ordered through independent book stores.

Garden Club from pg 1 In addition to the academic benefit of the garden club, there is a social benefit as well because the students interact across grade levels. Corbin said the club might plant another set of crops in the fall and welcome new members. “It’s just really nice to see

The Pennsylvania Railroad Museum recently purchased the three existing books from J. Arthur Moore’s four-book collection related to his fictional Virginia and Truckee Railroad of West Virginia. This railroad shares a name with a real railroad in Nevada. Moore began writing the four books 40 years ago. When “Summer of Two Worlds” was finished, it was released in manuscript form; in 2015, it was first published, and it was recently republished in its third edition. “Summer at Stewart Creek” was recently revised and then released on Dec. 1, 2020, and “Twelfth Winter,” was released on June 1. The remaining book, “Stranded in Snow Shoe,” is due out in early 2022; this book, “Summer of Two Worlds” and “Twelfth Winter” make up the “Summer of Two Worlds” trilogy. “Summer of Two Worlds” has also been released alongside two other titles by

Stress-Reducing Summer Activities Suggested

4-H Plans “Art Of S.T.E.M.” Camp Lancaster County 4-H will host a virtual Art of S.T.E.M. day camp featuring fun S.T.E.A.M. projects. The camp will run from 10 a.m. to noon on Monday, Aug. 2, through Thursday, Aug. 5, and will feature work with prisms and rainbows, tessellation artwork, illusions, and more. The event is free for current 4-H members, and there is a fee for nonmembers. Parents or another responsible adult are requested to participate with registered youths

to help with computer technology and activities. The camp is open to children age 8 and older. The registration deadline is Wednesday, July 28. For details and registration, contact Patti Van Brederode at pev3@psu.edu or call the Lancaster County Extension office at 717-3946851. A supply list will be sent to all participants via email. Individuals who need an accommodation due to a disability should contact Lori Little at the aforementioned number.

After more than a year of staying home, social distancing and Zoom learning, parents may be inclined to overscheduled their children during the summer to make up for lost time. However, educational psychologist and author Michele Borba has said that parents should resist this temptation. Borba offered suggestions of activities that are free or low-cost and are known to boost resilience and reduce stress. Parents can embrace oldfashioned, unplugged play. Play allows children to use their imaginations, and it may enhance brain development and social-emotional skills, and promote executive functions, thereby helping children to pursue goals, ignore distractions, and reduce stress. Parents are encouraged to

set up a stress box. If left unchecked, stress can affect children’s learning potential, friendships, physical health, emotional well-being, and ability to thrive. Families can create a stress box by filling a shoebox or other container with stress reducers such as a notepad and pencil for drawing or writing; a small toy ball; modeling clay; an MP3 or CD player filled with relaxation sounds; bubble blowers; and glitter jars. They may also download an app that teaches mindfulness. One of the best-known mood elevators is nature. Families can take a 20-minute stroll or sit in a place that makes them feel in contact with nature. Parents should remember to leave their cell phones inside. Hobbies can be a healthy

diversion from stress and a good way for children to recharge, get away from everyday pressures, and learn to enjoy their own company. The trick is to find an activity that supports a child’s interests and abilities and that they can do alone. Parents can teach playground games, such as “Mother, may I?” or duck, duck, goose, and other unplugged activities, such as marbles, jacks, and hula hoops. Children can then share these games with their friends. Playground games allow children to have fun anywhere, recharge and learn to get along with others. Parents should encourage their child to read. Fictitious worlds can help children deal with real-life problems and promote well-being. Books

Parents can stock up on boxes in every size from small jewelry boxes to refrigerator crates. Boxes are not only free, but they also can provide hours of imaginative play. Give children some marking pens and masking tape, and they can make igloos, forts, villages, castles, garages, storefronts, and hotels. Provide flashlights and children can turn the boxes into caves. Although educational goals, skill building and job attainment are always on the forefront for adult learners entering our program, skilling up after the pandemic takes on a whole new meaning and will be an important step for many workers who lost their jobs during COVID-19 restrictions. For some, it will mean improving basic literacy in reading, math, or English. For others, it will mean career exploration and sharpening skills to move into postsecondary education or training. The Success Centers in Lancaster and Lebanon counties are places where adults can get the support they need to build skills so that they can transform their lives, sustain their families and strengthen their communities.* What skills and knowledge do you have to share with an adult student to help them reach their goals? To find out more and to explore the possibilities, please contact: Lancaster County Jane Myers jane@literacysuccess.org 717-295-5523

*As the safety and health of everyone is a priority to us, we will continue to offer options for both face-to-face and remote learning to adapt to individual levels of comfort in providing instruction.
