Providence Township To Participate In National Night Out By Dayna M. Reidenouer

The board of supervisors of Providence Township will host a National Night Out (NNO) event on Tuesday, Aug. 7, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the municipal facility, 200 Mount Airy Road, New Providence. The event will be supported by township employees and volunteers. No cost will be charged for any part of the event. “The board wanted to have an appreciation picnic for the residents, like it had several years ago,” explained zoning officer Heidi Martinez, who has helped to organize the event. “About 50 people had attended, but they would like to have more this year, so they combined

the picnic with National Night Out.” NNO is an annual event in its 35th year. It was created to develop awareness of crime and drug prevention, generate local anti-crime efforts, strengthen neighborhood spirit and partnerships between police departments and the communities they serve, and send a message that neighborhoods are organized and fighting against crime. The Pennsylvania State Police will participate in Providence Township’s event, as will the Rawlinsville and Quarryville fire companies and Lancaster Emergency Medical Services Association. Gap Relief Auction Marks 70 Years Club Will Host Postcard Expo By Marcella Peyre-Ferry

While the Quarryville Fairgrounds will be the home of the 2018 Gap Relief Auction, the event’s name still pays homage to the location of the place where it started: at Sam Summers’ farm in Gap in 1948. Set for Friday, Aug. 10, and Saturday, Aug. 11, the annual auction to benefit

the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) will be held in the Kreider Building at the Solanco Fairgrounds, located at 172 S. Lime St., Quarryville. “It’s the longest continuing auction benefiting MCC. There are 40-some auctions across the United States and Canada,” said Ken Sensenig, assistant executive director of MCC East Coast. “It’s a way people in their home communities and right here in southern Lancaster County can literally reach out and touch the world. MCC works in 56 countries See Gap Relief Auction pg 5

Then and now, postcards are a snapshot sometimes literally - of everyday life. “They are windows of the past,” said Lancaster County Postcard Club charter member Jere Greider. “I’ve learned more history from postcards than (I did) in school,” added Dede Schaeffer, who is also a charter member of the club, which was formed in 1990 at the behest of Jim Ward and Charlie Griffiths. Postcards were initially developed in the 1800s, and they were a highlight of the World’s Columbian Exposition in

Weaver-Kreider calculated that 20 volunteers are needed daily to help during the sale, and that about 100 volunteers are involved in the overall event. During the year, up to 30 volunteers help sort incoming book donations. The sale attracts about 4,000 visitors annually, raising up to $40,000 for the organization. All funds raised by the event become part of the general operating budget of the historical society. Readers who would like to learn more about the historical society may visit www.lmhs.org.

According to Nofziger, nothing donated for the sale will end up in the trash. “At the very end of the sale, we allow organizations to bid by category,” Nofziger explained. “On Saturday, if there’s a category an organization is interested in, they can make a bid to buy all the books in that category that do not sell, and they just have to come and collect them.” Organizations that have an interest in buying a lot of books may contact Weaver-Kreider at 717-393-9745. When an organization collects 40,000 books for a sale and endeavors to sell all those books in four days, drastic sales measures may be employed. The Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society (LMHS) takes on such a challenge with by-the-box discounts beginning on the third day of its annual Bookworm Frolic. On the final day, the box price will be even lower. Although LMHS provides boxes, bookworms may bring their own. “The rule is for it to count, you have to be able to lift (the box of books) yourself,” explained Joel Nofziger, LMHS director of communications, who added jokingly, “Don’t bring a refrigerator box.” This year’s LMHS Bookworm Frolic will take place at LMHS, 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, from Wednesday, Aug. 15, through Saturday, Aug. 18. The Frolic will be open from 9 a.m. to

7 p.m. each day except for Aug. 18, when the sale will close at 4 p.m. According to Jon WeaverKreider, used book manager for LMHS, who is helming this year’s sale, books that have been collected for the Frolic fit into more than 20 categories. “We have a lot of theology and religion, history and politics,” said WeaverKreider, who added that he had counted 113 boxes of children’s books. Weaver-Kreider listed cookbooks, fiction, novels, and Christian fiction among the other categories that will be well represented at the sale. A number of foreign language books in German were also donated for the Frolic. While most of the books available for purchase will be set up outside the LMHS building under a tent, the music section and new books, which will be sold at special discount prices during the sale, will be located inside. Weaver-Kreider noted that food at this year’s sale will be

Schaeffer noted that club members have discovered cards bearing the signatures of famous folks, and she has personally rubbed shoulders with notable individuals who collect postcards. For club member Susan Glass, an interest in her hometown introduced her to deltiology - the word for the study and collection of postcards. “A lot of people look for views of their hometown,” Glass commented. “Once you get hooked, then you find something else to collect.” The Lancaster County Postcard Club welcomes new members, and guests may attend club meetings free of charge. Postcards from that time period still exist, as do others produced in the years since. Uncountable postcards will be displayed and available for purchase at the 26th annual Postcard Exposition that the Lancaster County Postcard Club will host on Saturday, Aug. 18, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia

Block 2 at 8:45 a.m., followed by an auction of shrubbery and lawn furniture. A children’s auction will start at 10 a.m. Large furniture will be featured at 11 a.m., followed by special items at noon. Special items this year will include a new spring wagon and playground equipment. At 12:30 p.m., there will be an auction of sheds, gazebos and more, followed by the quilt auction at 1 p.m. One unique item to be included in this year’s auction is a cedar chest with a bench top that features a scene of the first Gap Relief Auction from 1948 painted by Daniel Esh. The chest was created for the auction’s 50th anniversary year and was purchased by a member of the Summers family at that time. It returned to be sold again about nine years ago to a purchaser from North Carolina, and now it has returned again to the sale this year. Proceeds from the auction are important to the fundraising of the Mennonite Central Committee, which provides relief, developing and peacemaking work in the United States and around the world. Donations of new or slightly used items are being accepted for the auction. For more information or to donate, readers may contact Levi Fisher at 717-5296187 or Ammon Stoltzfoos at 717-786-0880. This will also be an opportunity to preview auction items, including quilts, that will be sold on Aug. 11. A blood drive will be held onsite on Aug. 10 from 4 to 8 p.m. Those who donate will receive a certificate for a free ice cream cone from the ice cream stand and a T-shirt. To schedule an appontment, readers may call 800-771-0059 or visit www.717giveblood.org. There will be a special singing performance by young people of the Weaverland Mennonite Conference from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. on Aug. 10, followed by MCC speaker Tom Wenger. His topic will focus on the need for material resources for southern Russia and Ukraine. Proceeds from the Friday night offering will benefit the cause. “There’s been social unrest and war in Ukraine,” Sensenig explained. “(Wenger) has been in Ukraine recently and will be drawing from that experience.” An auction of smaller items will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 10. On Aug. 11, the auction will move into full speed. Library System Receives Grant The Library System was awarded a grant from Music for Everyone Foundation in the amount of $1,216 to support the acquisition of percussion instruments to enhance library programs. The musical instrument collection is available to all public youth librarians, Be Ready Rover program coordinator, and the Bookmobile staff. Libraries will host “Together We Are Music” events and other music-oriented programming for youth and families during the summer and in the future. Library programs and library outreach supports children’s learning and creative needs in giving them access to materials, like instruments, and opportunities. Using their imagination, children will learn about tempo and volume, creatively express themselves, and perform in a non-judgmental atmosphere. The Music for Everyone Foundation is committed to supporting music as a positive impact in the community by awarding grants to schools and community groups to support music programs. For more information about the Music for Everyone program, readers may visit www.musicforeveryone.net.
