MOPC To Host Special Events By Dayna M. Reidenouer

Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church (MOPC), 1199 Valley Road, located 4 miles east of Quarryville on Route 372, will host two special events this month. Singer, songwriter, and storyteller Mark Cable will be the featured speaker and musician during the worship service at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 12. The presentation is described on promotional materials as “a special morning of music, ministry, renewal, laughter, and encouragement.” An offering will be received to offset the costs of the event. Adults are welcome to attend Sunday school at 9 a.m. A time of fellowship will be held from 10 to 10:20 a.m. An unstaffed nursery will be available during Sunday school and worship. The Presbyterian Women’s group will hold its annual clothing giveaway on Saturday, Aug. 18, from 7 a.m. to noon. Clothing and shoes will be available free

of charge, but those who are able are asked to bring nonperishable food items for the food bank at Solanco Neighborhood Ministries. While anyone who needs clothing is welcome to attend, the organizers respectfully request that resellers not participate in this event. Additionally, program coordinator Boni Henry noted that the giveaway will occur only on Saturday morning, as she has received calls to open the event on other days in past years. Church members have donated shoes and attire in a variety of sizes, and there should be clothing suitable for most people from birth through adulthood. Clothing donations - especially children’s items - are welcome, and folks may call Shirley Miller at 717786-3690 to make arrangements. “We want to help families in need, especially those with kids,” Henry remarked. “This is another way (for us) to reach out and help the community.”

The Pequea Township Park and Recreation Board is trying a new strategy in its wildlife management efforts. In an attempt to control the size of the deer population that lives in Silver Mine Park, 200 Silver Mine Road, Conestoga, the board will host archery hunts during the first two weeks of October. “The deer herd has gotten rather large around here,” noted board secretary Cynthia Evans-Herr, who is also vice chair of the township’s board of supervisors. Park and Recreation Board chair Tim Weaver reported that at least eight deer have been hit by cars since October 2017. In addition to the pain and suffering inflicted on the animals and the

meadows have become a significant food source for the herd, and the park is a safe place to raise young. “When we walk up there in the wintertime, there are tracks all over,” Weaver observed. Archery hunts will be held from sunrise to noon and from noon to sunset on Wednesdays through Saturdays, Oct. 3 to 6 and 10 to 13, in the north end of the park. Five zones have been established in the 65 acres, and each hunter will be assigned to a zone. Tree stands will be permitted at some sites. The zones will be labeled several weeks in advance so that hunters may scope out the areas. At the start of each hunting slot, everyone will enter and depart the zones at the same time. “We’re putting them in the woods, and we’re responsible for bringing them out,” Evans-Herr remarked. A total of 80 hunting opportunities will be available, and a drawing will be held to determine who will have the privilege of hunting. Only 320 tickets will be offered, and they may be obtained by donation, which will be used to offset the cost of producing the event. The hunt is insured, and approval was granted by the board of supervisors at the April meeting, by the township supervisor, and by the township’s insurance company. Evans-Herr noted that the entire process has been based on the example set by the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s elk hunt. The drawing will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 12, at the Park and Recreation Board meeting that will begin at 7 p.m. at the New Danville Fire Company, 43 Marticville Road, Lancaster. Winners do not need to be present. While anyone may enter the drawing, only licensed hunters may take part in the hunt, and all state game regulations will be in effect. Disabled hunters are encouraged to participate, and accommodations will be provided as needed. Weaver noted that if donations are received beyond the cost of producing the hunt, the excess amount will most likely be used to purchase native grass seeds and plants to expand the meadows. “Meadows bring in more pollinators,” Evans-Herr explained. “We’re all about pollinating. We want to be part of the initiative (to benefit) our farmers.” For more information or to enter the drawing, readers may call Weaver at 717-672-1479.

destruction to private vehicles, a Southern Regional Police Department cruiser sustained $2,000 worth of damage in one impact, and another deer totaled an SUV owned by the department. The hunts are not designed to eliminate the herd, but the hope is that with fewer animals living in the park, there will be fewer animals crossing roads, thus reducing the chances of collisions. EvansHerr noted that the good news is that the herd is healthy; chronic wasting disease has not be identified there as it has in other herds in the region. The healthy, growing herd is also an indication that work done at the park in the past few years is producing results. The larger

Community celebrations will be held in Lancaster to kick off and conclude National Recovery Month, which is observed in September. Both events will be held rain or shine at Buchanan Park, located at the corner of Buchanan and Race avenues, Lancaster. Recovery Rocks, a music festival celebrating recovery from addiction, will start things off on Saturday, Aug. 25, from 1 to 6 p.m. Live music will be performed by Rick’s One Man Band, Apes of the State, Bad Luck Charms, and Half Past Dead. Admission, along with games and activities for children, will be free of charge. Food trucks will be on-site selling refreshments. The festival was previously hosted at The 521 Club, which is a sober club located in Manheim Township, but the club opted to move the event to the park so that more people can attend, said event committee member Matt Supplee. “We wanted it to be more visible and overall accessible to the community,” added committee member Shawn “Kate” McNichol. For more information about Recovery

Rocks, readers may contact Supplee at 717940-9993 or matt_supplee@yahoo.com or call James Severson at 717-250-8582. Event updates will also be posted on The 521 Club’s Facebook page. Recovery Day Lancaster 2018 will be held at the park from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 22. The event will feature the Walk for Recovery, in which participants will circumnavigate the approximately 1-mile perimeter of the Franklin & Marshall College campus at 11 a.m. A barbecue lunch will be served for a small fee from 11:45 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. Three bands - Apes of the State, A Day Without Love, and Wallace - will perform beginning at noon. Activities for children and adults, including face painting, balloons, crafts, and a traveling magician, will be offered throughout the day, and the event will conclude with a Serenity Circle. Scott Theurer, an organizer for Recovery Day Lancaster and a person in recovery, explained that the Walk for Recovery is not a fundraising event. “It’s to raise awareness and show that recovery is real in Lancaster. We want to put a face to addiction,” he said. “We want to show people we do recover and come back to being contributing members of the community.” The theme of National Recovery

Month this year is “Join the Voices for Recovery: Invest in Health, Home, Purpose, and Community.” Theurer noted that strong communities are important to reduce the number of people developing addictions and to support those in recovery. “Lancaster County is known for having a vibrant and alive recovery community,” he said. “People move here for it.” Theurer reported that in the last quarter, the number of deaths from overdose in Lancaster County had dropped from the previous quarter, and this quarter looks to continue that trend. “To see the numbers coming down is exciting. Recovery is having an effect,” he said. “Hope is a huge part of recovery. That’s why we do these events: Everybody there is joyous and alive.” Information on how to access local resources for recovery will be available at the Recovery Day Lancaster event. Support groups, rehabilitation centers, and other programs will be represented. For immediate assistance, readers may contact the RASE Project at 717295-3080 or visit www.raseproject.org. There is no cost to attend Recovery Day Lancaster, but those who plan to enjoy the barbecue lunch are asked to register at www.lancastercountyrecovery

.com/event/2018. For more information about the event, readers may visit the website or contact Amy Sechrist at asechrist@compassmark.org. Folks may also visit www.facebook.com/LancCo PARecoveryAlliance.

Residents To Form Kiwanis Club Local residents are invited to join together to make a difference in children’s lives. A group has begun to meet at George’s Family Restaurant, 2600 Willow Street Pike North, Willow Street, on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month. The next meeting will take place on Tuesday, Aug. 14, at 6:30 p.m. Social time will take place at 6:30 p.m., and information about the group will be presented at 7 p.m. Interested community members are invited to attend. The group plans to become formally established as a Kiwanis Club. Kiwanis is a global community of clubs, members, and partners dedicated to improving the lives of children. Kiwanis strives to serve children locally and around the world so that future generations may thrive. The Southern Lancaster Area Kiwanis Club will join 8,000 clubs worldwide and their 315,000 members serving youths in more than 80 nations. There are currently 175 Kiwanis clubs in Pennsylvania. Kiwanis Club projects focus on early childhood development, improved reading skills, safer and better playgrounds, mentoring, and other topics. Kiwanis clubs also sponsor student-led Service Leadership Programs such as Key Club at high schools and Builders or KKids in middle and elementary schools. Kiwanis also sponsors Bringing Up Grades and Terrific Kids, which focus on helping children develop leadership skills and gaining confidence to achieve more. The local Kiwanis Club, when formally established, will set goals for the area. Each club plans its own activities and programs around the needs of the communities it serves. The new club will chart its course of service to children over the first months of its existence by way of suggestions from members and the use of established programs. The Southern Lancaster Area club will support a variety of early childhood education initiatives.

For 2018, the committee that organizes Summer Fest - a barbecue competition held in New Holland Memorial Community Park in the 400 block of Jackson Street - decided to offer visitors a larger selection of food for purchase. “People complained that (the barbecue) smells good but they can’t try anything,” said committee member Bryant Glick. “We have 10 food truck vendors coming, and we will have a lot more food variety (available),” said Glick. Having more food items for sale will not be the only change attendees will experience when they visit this year’s Summer Fest, which will be held in the park on Friday, Aug. 24, from noon until 9 p.m. and on Saturday, Aug. 25, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Pork loin has been added to the several types of barbecue that are judged by members of the Kansas City Barbecue Society (KCBS), and the inaugural Bell and Evans First Responder Wing Throw Down will be held. According to Glick, the first responder units will compete by making wings in two categories. A People’s Choice competition will be open to the public. “People will pay $1 per wing to sample wings from as many teams as they want, and they can vote for their favorite,” explained Glick. “Whichever team has the most votes will win a grill worth $1,000.” In the second category, KCBS judges will vote, and the winning team will receive $500. There is no fee for first responder teams to take part in the contest, which is being overseen by J. Clair Witwer. The wing competition will be held on Aug. 24, beginning at 6 p.m. Those who prefer other food items to wings may visit the food vendors selling items ranging from barbecue to ice cream. Glick listed french fries, tacos, Caribbean cuisine, and grilled cheese among the many foods that will be available for purchase. In addition, a local barbecue supply business will have samples of grilled pork loin available throughout the event for attendees to try. Committee member Bill Weidner noted that visitors should know that many of the vendors selling barbecue also have teams taking part in

the competition. In addition, Garden Spot High School FFA will sell chicken barbecue at the event with the goal of raising funds to attend a national conference. The Summer Fest competition, which is sanctioned by the KCBS, will include more than 70 barbecue teams from as far away as Ohio and Virginia. Teams will arrive by Friday morning, and on Friday night, they will begin to scent the air of New Holland with the smells of barbecued sausage, chicken, pork ribs, pork, beef brisket, chef’s choice, whole hog, and pork loin to compete in Summer Fest’s designated categories. Prizes will be awarded in several categories and will include the New Holland Championship, as well as the Pennsylvania State Barbecue Championship, which will go to the Pennsylvania team that has amassed the most points in at least three state contests. According to Glick, the team of Lo’-N-Slo’ BBQ of New Providence retained its title at the 2017 event. The overall winner of the New Holland event will receive a $2,500 cash prize and be eligible to compete in the American Royal Cook-Off in Kansas City, Mo., in October. Awards will be given at 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 25. Entertainment for people of all ages will be provided on Aug. 24 by Elvis tribute artist Jeff Krick, who has played

A total of 100 golfers participated in the 11th annual Beiler-Campbell Realtors Charity Golf Tournament at the Kennett Square Golf and Country Club in early summer. More than $30,000 was raised for two local organizations: Family Promise of Southern Chester County (SCC) and the Justin W. Jennings Foundation. Family Promise SCC helps children and their families experiencing homelessness achieve lasting self-sufficiency and stability by providing shelter, meals, and comprehensive support services through a network of congregations and volunteers until they find sustainable housing. The Justin W. Jennings Foundation manages and operates Justin’s Beach House, a home in the Bethany Beach area where families dealing with cancer can have a place of respite. The golf committee includes (from left) Anthony Beiler, Vicki Pollert, Jennifer D’Amico, Jeff Roland, and Mary Hughes.
