After a year’s hiatus because of COVID, the 44th annual Brethren Disaster Relief Auction (BDRA), will be held at the Lebanon Valley Exposition Center, 80 Rocherty Road, Lebanon, on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 24 and 25, beginning at 9 a.m.

The auction, in cooperation with the Atlantic Northeast and Southern districts of the Church of the Brethren, began in 1977 and has provided over $17 million in disaster relief to victims of natural disasters both in the U.S. and internationally. Funds raised by the auction not only pay for emergency supplies for disaster victims, but also support volunteer disaster relief trips throughout the year.

Funds and volunteers from the auction have helped immediate relief efforts and long-term cleanup and rebuilding from disasters from earthquakes in Haiti to a tornado in Campbelltown.

Separate auctions will include the general auction, the children’s auction, the quilt auction, the theme basket auction, the silent auction, the heifer auction, the coin auction and two pole barn auctions. The event may have as many as five auctions taking place at once.

Children’s activities this year will include the children’s auction, specializing in new items for children to be bid on only by children. A children’s store will offer gently used items, and a balloon artist will create balloon animals. Weather permitting, there will also be free barrel train rides and pony rides for a nominal donation.

There will be an area for vendors of crafts and art objects and a farmers market with fresh produce and baked goods, including homemade pies. Amish doughnuts and Amish soft pretzels, both homemade on-site, will be available.

Artisan Alley, located in the West Hall, will be a collection of juried artisans. It will feature specialty coffees, German pastries, artisan bread, handmade pottery and various artists.

To find out more about the auction, visit www.brethrenauction.org, call on the day of the auction at 717-723-6863 or pick up an auction booklet at many local retailers.

Moms In Prayer International has kicked off another season of praying for children and schools with its theme of “Rise Up! Reach Out! Share Hope Through the Gift of Prayer!” Across the United States, groups meet weekly to pray for children of all ages and their schools. Moms in Prayer is a worldwide organization of praying moms, grandmas, aunts and other women.

In addition to a traditional/one-school Moms in Prayer group, there are churchbased, grandmothers, homeschool, preschool, specialneeds, prodigals, college, career, and language-based teams of praying women, as well as a growing prison ministry. Women in more than 160 countries around the world meet regularly, spending an hour in prayer.

Moms in Prayer International also plans an annual Bless Our School Sunday event, where churches worldwide are invited to join a global prayer movement to pray for students, teachers, and school staff. This year the prayer outreach will take place on Sunday, Sept. 19. Churches that would like to unite with others for this event may visit https://momsinprayer.org/ events/bless-our-schools -sunday/ for resources.

For more information about Moms in Prayer International, visit www.MomsInPrayer.org. Individuals can locate a group through the Moms in Prayer website by selecting “Get Started” and then “Join a Group.”

Grave Concern Posts Meeting

Grave Concern will hold a quarterly public meeting and program on Wednesday, Sept. 15, at 7 p.m. at the Lancaster County Mennonite Information Center, located next to the historical society at 2209 Millstream Road (Route 30 East), Lancaster.

“Using DNA to Trace Family History” will be presented by Darvin L. Martin, who has been studying DNA in regard to family history since 2008. Martin will explain how DNA can help expand one’s family history beyond the standard paper trail of census lists, deeds, wills, tax records, and cemetery records. DNA analysis, used in combination with all the other research tools available for family history, can provide the means to verify and enhance the story of one’s ancestors.

Admission will be free and open to the public. Seating is limited. Face masks and social distancing are encouraged.

Grave Concern is an organization dedicated to the history, preservation and restoration of historical burial places. For more information, readers may call 717-393-9745.
