CROP Hunger Walk slated in Southern End

The 2024 CROP Hunger Walk will take place on Saturday, Oct. 19, at Muddy Run Park, 172 Bethesda Church Road West, Holtwood.

The rain-or-shine event serves as an annual fundraiser for local and global efforts to combat food insecurity, and individuals of all physical abilities are invited to participate.

Registration will start at 8:30 a.m., followed by the walk at 9 a.m. Participants may also register in advance to begin fundraising via individual campaigns prior to the event. To preregister, visit https://events.crophunger walk.org/cropwalks.

This year, the CROP Hunger Walk will include a story walk that incorporates the children’s book “Love the World” by Todd Parr. Walkers may view pages from the book as they progress on the trail.

Every year, a portion of the

CROP Hunger Walk’s proceeds benefit Quarryville-based nonprofit Solanco Neighborhood Ministries. In addition to operating a food bank in Quarryville, the organization offers educational programs and job training opportunities for residents of the Southern End. The remainder of the events’ proceeds will support Church World Service Lancaster, the local branch of an international organization that provides emergency relief and resources for communities affected by catastrophes.

The annual CROP Hunger Walk is organized by Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren. Prior to 2006, the event took place in downtown Quarryville. The location was moved to Muddy Run Park after Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren members Mary Etta Reinhart and Don Trimble took over management of the CROP Hunger Walk. Reinhart and Trimble also changed the day of the fundraiser from

Solanco Fair celebrates 75th anniversary

In 1950, six groups of women from local farms convened at the Quarryville fire hall to discuss the idea of creating an annual fair in the Solanco community. Dear

Brother or Sister

in Christ, In the United States, 40% of Christians do not vote.

If God did not want us to have an active role in His plans, He would not have called us to action repeatedly throughout Scripture. Again and again, from Genesis to Revelation, He calls on His people to act, to stand against evil, and to stand up for the needy and vulnerable (Isaiah 6:8, Matthew 28:18-20, Ephesians 5:11, Proverbs 29:2, Proverbs 31:8-9). If we sit on the sidelines while every good thing our nation stands for is destroyed, we will have violated far more Scripture than the handful of passages that may be misused to justify inaction.

Christians oftentimes ignore getting involved in the voting process for several reasons: (1) they don’t believe their vote counts, (2) they have been misinformed, or (3) they have never done it; therefore, it’s hard to break the ice. We encourage you to pray and ask God to help you break free from these fears. We are all called upon to do the right thing.

Many Christians do not vote because of pressure from their church and community. It is time to fully reverse that habit. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. Initially, you may be judged for doing so. But standing in the gap for good is the only way to stop this storm.

Here’s what you can do today to save the country:

1. You can vote early by mail, or in-person. Call us and we’ll help you better understand the options Pennsylvania offers: 717-403-7041.

2. Talk to everyone about why you are voting and why they should too.

Sincerely,

Anonymous Amishman from Wayne County, Ohio

3. Pray for our nation and our nation’s leaders. Please act. You don’t want to wake-up the day after the 2024 election wishing you had done more to save your community and your country.

Sunday afternoon to Saturday morning.

The CROP Hunger Walk has steadily grown every year; in 2022, the event broke its all-time fundraising record by raising more than $22,350, and the 2023 CROP Hunger Walk was recognized by Church World Service as one of the top 100 CROP fundraisers held across the country. “People recognize it’s a good cause that’s gathered around hunger needs locally and around the world,” Reinhart said. “It’s also at a good location. People like coming to Muddy Run Park,

and more and more people get involved each year.”

In recent years, the CROP Hunger Walk has grown in the number of participating churches and organizations as well as individual participants. Congregations and nonprofits in the Penn Manor and Lampeter-Strasburg areas partner with Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren to raise funds and to promote the event in communities throughout the Southern End.

The role of a home health aide

Caregivers come from all walks of life. Doctors and nurses may be the frontline medical providers people encounter most frequently, but plenty of others do their part to maintain the well-being of individuals. Among these caregivers are home health aides.

Home health aides, sometimes called personal care aides, assist people with activities of daily life. An aide typically helps a person who may need assistance with tasks he or she cannot perform due to illness or disability. The aides may work in a person’s home, in a group home, or in another care facility.

AARP says home health aides are considered health care paraprofessionals and must meet established training requirements, which vary by location. Their duties may include assistance with personal care, such as dressing, toileting, feeding, and moving from a bed to a chair; checking vital signs; monitoring a client; light housekeeping; meal plan-

ning and cooking; picking up prescriptions; and providing companionship. Aides typically will not provide skilled nursing care and may not be able to offer recommendations on treatment or medications.

Individuals can enlist the services of home health aides who work independently or are placed through agencies. Sometimes a doctor or hospital has connections to aide services and can make referrals. It can be useful to interview several potential aides to find one who will fit with the needs and personality of the person requiring assistance. A good aide is compassionate, patient, and flexible. As illness or injury also can affect a person’s mood, aides must be able to adjust if a client is reluctant to receive help or is depressed or anxious from his or her limitations.

Home health aides serve an important role in the health care community by providing care and companionship to those who can no longer live independently.

How nutritional needs change with age

Healthy eating is important at any age and can set the course for vitality and wellness. Sufficient nutrition can help prevent chronic illnesses and make sure that growing bodies develop properly. As one ages, various changes take place in the body, making healthy eating even more essential.

According to Healthline, nutritional deficiencies can affect aging individuals, which can decrease quality of life and lead to poor health outcomes. Individuals should pay attention to their vitamin and mineral intake at various ages so they do not miss out on important nutrients. As individuals age, they may notice they do not need to consume as many calories, noted Connie Bales, associate director of the Geriatric Research, Education, and Clinical Center at Durham Veterans Affairs Medical Center. People require fewer calories every decade because they are moving around less and have less muscle mass. This change causes a decline in

metabolic rate.

However, even though caloric needs go down with age, it is important to pack as much nutrition into the calories a person does consume. That means finding nutrient-rich foods like whole grains, fruits, nuts, beans, vegetables, and fish.

In addition, aging people should consume more lean protein. Muscle loss and loss of strength can develop as a person ages. Healthline says the average adult loses 3% to 8% of his or her muscle mass each decade after age 30. Eating more protein could help aging bodies maintain muscle.

People should also eat fortified cereals and grains, as the ability to absorb vitamin B12 can decrease as one gets older and with the use of certain medicines. Many health professionals recommend patients get more vitamin B12 by consuming foods enriched with this vitamin. Vitamin supplements may be needed in addition to food.

Drinking more fluids is important. Health. com says the sensation of thirst declines with age, so people should be sure to drink water and other fluids. Doing so also helps with digestion.

People should prioritize bone health. Osteoporosis is a concern for older adults, particularly women who have reached menopause. Osteoporosis occurs when bones become brittle and can break from only the slightest bump or fall, says the Mayo Clinic. Vitamin D and calcium help strengthen bones, and older adults may need more of these nutrients.

Individuals should speak with their health care providers and nutritionists for further insight into their changing nutritional needs. Such professionals can help customize diets to address specific health concerns.

the details. Decades later, the Solanco Fair has become one of the community’s most beloved traditions, and the event celebrated its 75th anniversary this year.

The 2024 Solanco Fair took place from Sept. 18 to 20 at the Solanco Fairgrounds in Quarryville. The festivities kicked off with the judging of various exhibits and dairy cattle, followed by the market lamb show and the market goat show. A performance of the national anthem and a moment of silence was observed on each day of the fair.

The annual parade through downtown Quarryville was held on Sept. 18. The theme of this year’s parade was “Bring the World to Quarryville,” and participants incorporated cultures from around the globe to take spectators on an international adventure.

Fair activities were in full swing by Sept. 19, with swine judging and an antique tractor pull. The first full day of the fair also included the Holstein feeder

calf show, a concert from the Jess Zimmerman Band in the lower ball field and an antique and classic tractor pull. The day’s events wrapped up with a market steer show and the annual baby parade in the upper ballfield.

The final day of the fair commenced with a tractor driving contest in the upper ballfield.

In the afternoon, candidates in the Solanco Fair queen contest gathered in Building No. 5 at the fairgrounds to vie for the crown.

The young women shared their personal connections to the

Solanco Fair and how they would use the platform if chosen as fair queen. The competition concluded with remarks from 2023 Solanco Fair queen Keeley Kreider and the coronation of Kyrsten Byers as the 2024 Solanco Fair queen. The final day of the fair wrapped up with a milking contest between local celebrities, the youth participation awards and a pedal tractor pull competition.

On each day of the fair, attendees enjoyed a mouth-watering array of traditional fair foods, including hamburgers, hot dogs, barbecue sandwiches, funnel cakes, french fries and milkshakes. Food stands were operated by local service groups and nonprofits, and a portion of each group’s sales benefited its organization.

To commemorate the 75th anniversary of the fair, the Solanco Fair Committee gave volunteers custom-made T-shirts to recognize the many individuals who have helped run the event since it began. “We want to honor everyone who helped make the fair what it is today, whether they volunteered for one year or 50 years,” said Scott Peiffer, general manager of the fair.

“The fair is a wholesome event that brings people back to their roots,” Peiffer said. “I still see friends from high school 45 years ago, as well as people who I just saw last week. People come every day for the fellowship. Add good food to that, and you’ve got a perfect storm.”
