New Hope Plans Annual Dinner, Welcomes New Staff Members By Dayna M. Reidenouer
New Hope Community Life Ministry, 248-A Maple Ave., Quarryville, has welcomed two new staff members. Levi Roop is a counselor who will see clients part time, and Katey Ebaugh Ragsdale is the new manager of the Community Closet thrift store, 128 TownsEdge Drive, Quarryville. “Going to counseling for myself was life-changing. I discovered a passion for helping people break free of things that weigh them down,” Roop said. Roop initially earned an associate degree in collision repair technology from Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology. After discovering an interest in counseling, he enrolled at Cairn University, where he received a master’s degree in the subject. He also holds a certificate of advanced specialization in counseling, which required an additional 60 credits. Roop completed an internship of more than 700 hours at Cairn’s Oasis Counseling Center. To be licensed as a counselor, Roop will need to gain about 3,000 hours of experience.
New Hope Community Life Ministry has new employees: Katey Ragsdale (left) manages the Community Closet thrift store, and Levi Roop is a counselor. The two will participate in New Hope’s annual fundraising dinner on Nov. 7 in Refton. At New Hope, he will be supervised by licensed counselor Elaine Campbell. “I really appreciate New Hope’s mission to help the community, to be affordable,” Roop remarked. “That it is a Christian-based organization is a big
draw for me. Counseling can make an impact on spiritual life.” “It’s really important for us to be a resource to the community and offer counseling with our faith at its core,” said executive director Deb Riddell. See New Hope pg 7

“Chad Carter (5 tackles) did a great job on defense and Rashawn had that big touchdown pass,” Cox said. “Fulton actually scored three times but the one was called back. “I just can’t say enough about the seniors and how they’re leading this young team.” Yannutz, who leads the league in rushing, finished with 124 yards on 19 carries. Unger completed 1-of-3 passes and added 61 rushing yards while Trent McDowell booted two more PAT’s. Defensively, Nick Defrancesco added six tackles with Fulton chipping in with four. BOYS’ SOCCER After a hard-fought 2-1 loss to Cocalico on Sept. 30, the boys’ soccer team wrapped up the 2019 season with 5-0 shutout losses against Lancaster Mennonite and Elco and a 7-0 result against Donegal, Tuesday, Oct. 8. The Eagles and the Blazers were the Section Three leaders at 8-2. The Mules finished at 2-15 overall.

And no one scored in the two ten minute OT periods.” Last Tuesday, Oct. 8, Solanco capped the regular season with its best record ever. Their 2-0 home shutout over Donegal pushed their mark to 12-4-2 overall (6-2-2 in Section Three). Solanco scored the only goal they needed in the 28th minute. Yoder collected the ball in the center of the field caster on October 4. and played a cross to Nikki Trout who blasted a shot just under the cross bar and just over the keeper’s hands. Gabi Dolan, who had ten saves against Elco, needed five to preserve the shutout. “Donegal is better than their record (6-8-2 overall) shows,” said Yoder. “They have some talented underclassmen
but we controlled play most of the game, especially in the second half.” TENNIS Solanco competed in the Lancaster-Lebanon League flight tournament which got underway Friday, October 4. Playing at No. 1, Faith Redcay opened against No. 2 seed Avery Palandjian, the eventual second place finisher, and dropped a 6-0, 6-0 result. Perla Benitez, at No. 3, faced No. 4 Tierney Cantwell (Hempfield) who also advanced to the finals with a 6-0, 6-0 result. At No. 4, it was top seed Ellie Kready of CV taking on Solanco’s Sidney Beyer. Kready opened with a 6-0, 6-0 win and was the Flight Four champ. In doubles action, Redcay and Olivia Baker suffered a 6-2, 6-0 first round loss to Lampeter-Strasburg’s Izzy Brown and Nora Holmes while Benitez partnered with Beyer at No. 2. They dropped an 8-4 proset against Ephrata’s Ahslyn Mazzocchi and Winnie Zhang. Also competing was Michaela Brenneman and Sophia Stoltzfus at the No. 3 tandem. They fell short 8-3 against Elizabethtown’s Bert and Evans. FIELD HOCKEY The visiting Pioneers weren’t deterred by Solanco’s grass field on Friday, Oct. 4, as L-S, sitting third Section Two, cruised to a 7-2 win. Despite the lopsided final, the Mares gave L-S a run for the money in the first half, battling to a 3-2 score. They scored the opening goal, just 2:09 in, on a goal by Mariah Stoltzfus and again at the 7:55 mark when Maggie Hirst sent a shot past Pioneer keeper Alexis Garrett. Keirra Laird and Mylee Smith set up those tallies. “I was like ‘wow OK let’s go,’” said head coach Whitney Hawkins. “But once they scored, and scored again, our momentum dropped. We were a little too laid back in the second half. It’s something we’re working on. “Overall, Mariah had a really great game,” the coach continued. “She was moving, cutting, stepping to the ball and doing everything we had asked during the huddles during the game.”

CROSS COUNTRY The cross country teams capped the regular season last Tuesday, Oct. 8, at Warwick. The boys’, behind an impressive third place effort from Anthony Solis-Morales (17:22) dropped a 19-39 result to the hosts and lost a closer battle, 24-33, to Conestoga Valley, who earned its first win of the season. “Anthony ran a fantastic race with a near tie for second and just four seconds off the race winner,” lauded head coach Craig Ausel. The Bucks’ top runner, Emmanuel Gitonga, also clocked a 17:22, but the rest of the top five finished in the top 15 while the Mules managed just four runners inside the same margin. “We had our shot at a win,” said Ausel, “and our guys raced well but just not to the level of the competition. CV got out strong and challenged us and we had to work our way up through the pack.” Avery Jacobson finished ninth (18:04) and ahead of CV’s third and fourth runners while Tate Fisher (12th, 18:51) and Nathan Eller (13th, 18:51) followed those same runners to the finish. “Tate and Nathan, both seniors, fought hard to make up the gap,” Ausel said. “I could not be more proud of the way this team responded this season. They established a culture of change that is going to pay off for SLCXC in the coming years.” The girls’ team faced two squads just ahead of them in the standings and was hoping to move up. Their efforts, however, fell short as the hosts came away with a 25-33 win while the Bucks prevailed 22-37, leaving Solanco at 2-8 on the year. Daria Neaves (20:58) followed Warwick’s Anna Martin (20:19) to the finish line and passed three CV runners over the last two miles, edging their No. 1 at the finish. CV took charge from there, claiming five of the next seven places to sweep the competition. Emma Baxter broke up that group with a sixth place finish in 22:06 and Nicole Dodson (11th, 22:46) finished just two places behind the pack. Halle Brown ran fourth for the Mares with a time of 23:48 and in 15th place. “The ladies have been a pleasant surprise all season, but with only seven runners, there is little room for mistake,” said Ausel. “Despite Hale running her very best time of the season, Warwick’s No. 4 and 5 runners also ran outstanding races 22:53 and 23:02. They also displaced us with three runners in front of our fifth.”

against Kennard Dale, the Mares, with seven blocks from Emma Canale, came back with a 25-20 win. But the visitors had a little more gas in the tank and finished out with 2522, 25-14 wins. “That third set was the turning point,” said head coach Meghan Cross. “We played with energy and focus against some long volleys. That third set came down two a few hitting errors and a couple dig errors after some really good volleys,” explained Cross. “Alondra Quinonez’s serves (6 aces) helped us out of a tough rotation. She and Nathaly both had some crucial saves in that third set. “Alondra had an awesome defensive game (14 digs) as well,” Cross noted. “She was a key player tonight along with Libero Maggie Perry, who had 15 digs.” Backing Canale (3 kills) with strong net play was Cheyanne Cutler and Nathaly Molinarez, both with five kills and Jada Dow with three, set up, in part, by Madi Davis (10 assists). Also contributing defensively was Molinarez with eight digs, and Kate Unger and Davis with seven each. One night later, the Mares dropped a 3-0 (25-14, 25-9, 25-16) result to an 11-win Ephrata squad. Anya Fisher recorded a match-high seven kills, Canale put up three blocks and Dow added six digs while Davis was tops with two aces, six digs and six assists. GOLF Logan Wagner, in his debut performance at the District Three Class 3A Championships at Briarwood East Golf Course on Oct.4, carded an 86 on the par 71 course. The freshman missed the cut to Saturday’s round by one stroke. Olivia Lasko also represented Solanco on the girls’ side of the tournament. She failed to qualify for round two. “Logan was disappointed but as a freshman he gained valuable experience and will work hard to return next year and go farther,” said head coach Greg Minnich. “Olivia’s 98 was her best ever score in competition but the cut was 87. She realizes now what it takes to get to the next level and, as a sophomore, look for her to return next year.”

church. A vendor, craft, and antique show has been set for Saturday, Nov. 23, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Oct. 25 dinner will feature “real, Lancaster County potpie,” said church member Kay Graybill. “With noodles. It’s not a pie,” added church member Wanda Albright. Diners will also be served peas, coleslaw, rolls, and assorted desserts. In lieu of an admission price, donations will be accepted for the meal. Quarts of potpie will be available for takeout at a set cost. Readers with questions about the dinner may call Albright at 717-786-4735. The proceeds from the potpie dinner and the vendor, craft, and antique show will support the “Raise the Roof” campaign, which will pay the cost to replace the rubber roof on the fellowship hall, which Graybill estimated is at least 20 years old. The church is also starting to increase its capital fund. Graybill noted that the church building was constructed in 1894 for the cost of $12,500 and without taking on debt. “We would like to be debt-free (on future projects),” she added. Anyone who would like to be a vendor at the Nov. 23 show may call Graybill at 717-371-8753.
The Nov. 2 event has been organized by church member Vickie Buller to benefit Mike and Candi Oster, Wesley members and active philanthropists. “She has helped with lots of other fundraisers in Lancaster County over the past 10 years,” Buller said. “Now it’s her turn (to feel the support).” Candi was diagnosed with leukemia in 2010, but while medication controlled it, the disease changed in March this year. Her best hope for survival and remission is a bone marrow transplant from her brother, and she was set to undergo the procedure on Oct. 8 in Philadelphia. Even if her recovery goes as planned, Candi, who is employed by the Conestoga Valley High School, will be out of work for a year. In order to help lessen the financial burden, church members have organized a familyfriendly fundraiser on Nov. 2. A small cover charge may be paid at the door, which will give attendees access to music, dancing, billiards, air hockey, and prize drawings. A children’s area will offer crafts. Food and beverages will be available for purchase, and the menu will include meatball sandwiches, hot dogs, fried chicken, Spanish rice, macaroni and cheese, potato salad, pasta salad, and desserts.
Wesley United Methodist Church of Strasburg, represented by (from left) Kay Graybill, Wanda Albright, and Vickie Buller, will host several events, including a potpie dinner on Oct. 25. Opportunities to win the items will be available at a fundraiser for Mike and Candi Oster (in photo held by Buller) on Nov. 2. Buller is accepting donations of items for the drawings, and readers who would like to contribute may call her at 717-687-0208. The congregation will also host two other events. Church members will hand out hot chocolate and cookies at the Strasburg Halloween Parade, which will be held on Thursday, Oct. 24. An ingathering covered dish lunch on Sunday, Nov. 3, will
celebrate the 125th anniversary of the church building. The worship service will begin at 8:45 a.m., and the meal is set to begin at 12:15 p.m. Attendees are invited to bring a dish to share. A John Wesley impersonator is slated to attend. For more information about Wesley UMC, readers may visit http://wesley church.us/.

New Hope from pg 1 To ensure that counseling is available to everyone who needs it regardless of their ability to pay, New Hope offers the Hope Chest fund. The annual fundraising dinner on Thursday, Nov. 7, will support the Hope Chest and New Hope’s mission. The event will be held at Refton Brethren in Christ Church, 110 Church St., Refton, at 6 p.m. The doors will open at 5:30 p.m. The buffet dinner will be catered by Esther Smoker. After the meal and a time of fellowship, New Hope counselor Mandy MacIntire will share her story of receiving counseling at New Hope and how it impacted her and the career she chose. New Hope’s four counselors, who also include Kathy Brown, will participate in a panel discussion about what they do for rest, which is the theme of the event. There is no cost to attend the dinner, but attendees will have an opportunity to donate to the ministry. Attendees may meet Ragsdale at the dinner, or they may stop by the Community Closet to shop and say hello. Like Roop, Ragsdale has a master’s degree from Cairn University, but hers is in the area of nonprofit leadership. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Bluffton University. Ragsdale is excited to be back in the Southern End - she grew up in Holtwood - and running the Community Closet. “I really love the thrifting industry,” Ragsdale said. “I want to be a steward of the things we already have (at the Community Closet). We have a solid volunteer base. I’m going to be protective of that. I also want to engage all audiences, specifically teens and young adults, and maintain our Christ-centered values.” Volunteers are crucial to making the thrift store a financial success, and proceeds support New Hope’s continued operation. Ragsdale volunteered at the Community Closet while a young teenager, and she hopes other young people follow suit. “It’s a great opportunity to learn how an organization runs, learn about the ministry, and get to know people,” she said, adding that students can earn community service hours. While Ragsdale would like to get more people involved with the thrift store, she expressed gratitude for the community’s past and current support. “We’re really thankful for great donations and people who spread the word about New Hope’s Community Closet,” Ragsdale said. “Shopping here is a really great way of investing in (the) purpose (of New Hope).” The deadline to reserve seats for the fundraising dinner is Thursday, Oct. 31. To make reservations, readers may call the office at 717-786-2802 or email newhope248@epix.net.
The Solanco Historical Society will meet on Saturday, Oct. 19, at 1:30 p.m. at the society’s Archives Building, 1932 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville. The topic will be “The History of the Robert Fulton Fire Company.” It will be presented by Robert Fulton Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary member Pat Eller and fire company member Rob Sample. They plan to bring a piece of fire equipment to augment their digital slide show. The program is free and open to the public. The site is located across from the Robert Fulton Birthplace.

Stitched With Love Holiday Bazaar And Craft Fair Will Feature Handcrafted Goods By Dayna M. Reidenouer
An array of stitched items will fill the quilters’ table at the holiday bazaar and craft fair hosted by St. Michael Evangelical Lutheran Church, 40 E. Main St., Strasburg, on Saturday, Oct. 19, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will be held rain or shine, as most of the vendors will be indoors. A group of women meets at the church on Wednesday mornings to sew quilts for Lutheran World Relief, which distributes the warm coverlets to people after natural disasters and other traumatic events. One of the group’s members, Donna DeWalt, stays busy during the rest of the week making items for the bazaar. Proceeds from the sale of her items, as well as things contributed by other members of the quilting group, will be used to purchase supplies for the quilts.
“It’s a way to use my talents,” DeWalt said as she unloaded a large box full of itens she has made over the past year: several small pillows, a vintage-style apron, sports-themed fleece scarves, seasonal reversible placemats, padded clothes hangers, and a plethora of Christmas-themed small toys, ornaments, and decorative items. She noted that she spent no money on the fabric; everything had been donated by people who support the quilters’ ministry. “This is something that I do all the time,” DeWalt said. “It all has to do with stewardship of our gifts from God.” In addition to her sewing skills, DeWalt is a skillful knitter and crocheter. She recently won nearly a dozen ribbons at the West Lampeter Fair, and many of her winning items, including baby blankets and afghans, will be offered for sale at the bazaar. “She does beautiful work,” commented fellow quilting group member Millie Patterson, who
marveled at the range of DeWalt’s talents. Seated at a table draped with a brightly colored quilt, Patterson was joined by Jan Brooks as they stitched knots into the quilt to keep the top, batting, and back together. “I can’t sew, but I can do this,” Patterson added. The quilting group’s table will also contain jellies, fudge, and canned goods. Brooks will supply seven-day pickles, and there will be bread-and-butter pickles canned by Patterson and quilting group member Nancy Malcolm as well. In addition to the quilters’ items, 12 vendors will sell handcrafted products. Wooden goods, alpaca products, soaps, lighted decorations made from beads, and origami will be among the offerings. Fiber artist Bev Pfeiffer will demonstrate how to spin yarn. She has also donated a handwoven shawl, which there will be opportunities to win. A framed Norman Rockwell puzzle will also be given away.

Candace Abel started making her own soaps and lotions when she was on a quest to find healthier products to use for her youngest son, who has a critical form of a blood disorder known as thalassemia, which requires intensive medication and gene therapy for survival. “I thought, ‘If we can put better things on the table, then we can put better things on our bodies, too,’” recalled Candace. Candace’s use of goat’s milk and oils to create soaps and lotions with an artistic flair caught the attention of family and friends, who asked her to make the products for them to use and then placed even more orders for things like party and wedding favors. In 2018, Candace decided to turn her hobby into something more and established Girl Crush Company as a limited liability company (LLC). Girl Crush Company is a member of the Handcrafted Soap and Cosmetic Guild and uses organic, responsibly sourced oils and goat’s milk or honey from local suppliers. The products, which range from eyecatching unicorn swirled soaps to whimsical hand soaps with scents like heirloom tomato and oatmeal and honey, contain ethically sourced colors and fragrances. Using responsibly and ethically sourced ingredients is important to Candace, as it means no animal testing and no child labor have played a role in any of the products, which are all made in Girl Crush Company’s soap studio in Mount Joy. Now Girl Crush Company is in the process of becoming a social enterprise in order to use its profits to educate, employ, and empower at-risk single mothers in the local area. “The goal is much bigger than creating soaps,” Candace emphasized. “We want to make our footprint healthy in the ingredients that go into everything but also as a social enterprise, and what a social enterprise strives to do is use a lot of its profits for an intended good.” A portion of the profits from Girl Crush Company’s sales of products, which are available to purchase at www.girlcrushco.com and at local events, will be used to establish a mentoring program for at-risk single moms. When volunteering with CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) of Lancaster County, a nonprofit organization that allows trained community members to be appointed by a judge to advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children in foster care, Candace could not stop thinking about the lack of support the single moms had in and out of the courtroom. After many conversations lamenting the need for more resources for single moms, someone challenged Candace to do something about it - and now she is. “What I’d like to offer these women is
the assurance they are not alone,” said Candace. The company is a reflection of Candace’s heart for helping others - something she is no stranger to doing. She founded Elizabethtown-based nonprofit Brittany’s Hope in memory of her daughter, Brittany Ann O’Connell, who died in a car accident in 1999. Brittany’s Hope focuses on aiding and facilitating the adoptions of special needs children from around the world. Candace and her daughter-in-law, Jackie Abel, who also works for Girl Crush Company, are in the planning stages of launching a two-year pilot program where compliant single moms would be assigned a trained mentor mom. “(The mentor’s) job will really be to offer as much love as possible during the process,” explained Candace. Beyond one-on-one mentoring, she envisions a community piece with a weekly meeting time for single moms to spend time together. “People need that connection, the opportunity to build relationships and to see a model of someone living a better way even though it may not be easier,” Candace continued. Girl Crush Company, along with other LLCs still to be determined or developed as part of the future model for the program, would also offer employment and skill set development opportunities for the single moms. A board of directors will oversee the LLCs and mentoring program, with the goal of providing a holistic approach in supporting local, at-risk single moms and practically equipping and empowering them to move forward. “I believe we need to offer a holistic approach that (each mom) had a hand in creating,” added Candace.
