Spreading kindness, one cup at a time
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
Smith Middle School seventh-grader Olivia Bauermaster recently released a children’s book titled “Lemon-Aid: Spreading Kindness One Cup at a Time.” The book, which Olivia co-authored with her father and the Providence Elementary School principal, Zac Bauermaster, tells the story of how Olivia and her friends used a lemonade stand to make a positive impact in their community.
Olivia and Zac dedicated the book to the residents of Quarryville and members of the Solanco community. The story was inspired by a lemonade stand Olivia started with her siblings and two other kids from her neighborhood three years ago. The lemonade-slinging youngsters dubbed themselves the “Cul-de-sac Kids,” and they made some extra spending money in their first year. The following summer, the Cul-de-sac Kids
used the lemonade stand to raise money for Solanco Neighborhood Ministries, which operates a food bank in Quarryville and offers community outreach programs to residents of the area. Members of the community frequently bought cups of lemonade for as much as $50 to support the organization. “It was really amazing,” Zac said. “The kids were wondering why people were giving so much, and that’s the lesson of compassion and community. It really opened my eyes too, seeing the community come together for one another.”
“Once we started donating, more and more people showed up,” Olivia said. “So many people came out to help others in the community.” Olivia added that the Cul-de-sac Kids plan to operate the stand again next summer to sell copies of the book in addition to ice-cold cups of lemonade.
Although this is the first time Zac and Olivia have collaborated as co-authors, Zac published

Dear Brother or Sister in Christ, In the United States, 40% of Christians do not vote.
If God did not want us to have an active role in His plans, He would not have called us to action repeatedly throughout Scripture. Again and again, from Genesis to Revelation, He calls on His people to act, to stand against evil, and to stand up for the needy and vulnerable (Isaiah 6:8, Matthew 28:18-20, Ephesians 5:11, Proverbs 29:2, Proverbs 31:8-9). If we sit on the sidelines while every good thing our nation stands for is destroyed, we will have violated far more Scripture than the handful of passages that may be misused to justify inaction.
Christians oftentimes ignore getting involved in the voting process for several reasons: (1) they don’t believe their vote counts, (2) they have been misinformed, or (3) they have never done it; therefore, it’s hard to break the ice. We encourage you to pray and ask God to help you break free from these fears. We are all called upon to do the right thing.
Many Christians do not vote because of pressure from their church and community. It is time to fully reverse that habit. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. Initially, you may be judged for doing so. But standing in the gap for good is the only way to stop this storm.
Here’s what you can do today to save the country:
1. You can vote early by mail, or in-person. Call us and we’ll help you better understand the options Pennsylvania offers: 717-403-7041.
2. Talk to everyone about why you are voting and why they should too.
3. Pray for our nation and our nation’s leaders. Please act. You don’t want to wake-up the day after the 2024 election wishing you had done more to save your community and your country.
Sincerely, Anonymous Amishman from Wayne County, Ohio

his first book, “Leading With a Humble Heart,” in 2022. The 40-day devotional and leadership guide incorporates Scripture and personal anecdotes from Zac’s career as an educator. Zac released his second book, “Leading With PEOPLE: A Six Pillar Framework for Fruitful Leadership,” in October 2023. The book, similarly to Zac’s devotional, incorporates Christian values as it explores key concepts that Zac considers foundational to successful leadership. But instead of following a 40-day framework, “Leading With PEOPLE” features six chapters. The chapters highlight the importance of giving people empathy, observing their needs, praying for them, prioritizing them, loving them and offering encouragement.

Book club to host Eleanor Isaacson
The book club at Willow Street Church, 2723 Willow Street Pike North, Willow Street, will host a presentation by author Eleanor Isaacson on Saturday, Oct. 19, at 10 a.m. Isaacson, an American who was abandoned in East Germany as a toddler, survived bombings, starvation and the Russian occupation during World War II. She fled to America just as the Iron Curtain fell.
Eventually, Isaacson found the man of her dreams and the beauty of dance and gradually became more and more aware of God, her “invisible friend” who had always loved her.
Her book “Dancing From Darkness” will be available for purchase. A freewill offering will be received, and light refreshments will be served. Everyone is welcome.

playground and put in new structures for kids every couple years,” said Sarah Roth, president of the PTO. “(The playground) gets beat up after so long, so we try to give the kids something nice to have for recess.”
The PTO will also use the funds to cover the cost of field trips for students. In addition to field trips, the PTO helps to fund various extracurricular activities and teachers’ enrichment projects. In recent years, the PTO has not only funded a new playground at the school, but has also frequently organized special events where students can enjoy games and activities with classmates. “Without the community’s support,
we wouldn’t be able to give our students the kind of school experience they deserve,” Roth said.
Providence Elementary School’s PTO has hosted the annual auction for many years, and the event serves as the organization’s primary fall fundraiser. Every spring, the PTO typically holds the Race for Education fundraiser, which encourages students to run or walk on a course encircling the school as they raise money and request financial support from family members and friends.
