It might seem that all the focus is on holidays during this time of the year, but the arrival of Christmas nearly coincides with the official start of winter. Solanco Neighborhood Ministries (SNMinistries) offers services to Southern End residents who need help to keep their homes warm as the temperatures drop. “We continue to offer our matching program for heating expenses,” said community support specialist Hannah Linde. “Any current client who has personally paid on their heating accounts - fuel oil, propane, etc. - can be matched up to $300.” A copy

Solanco High School sophomore Julia Gavin has had a few busy weeks. First, she appeared as a tragedian in the school’s production of “Rosenkrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead.” She had a few days off for Thanksgiving, and then she competed in and won the Miss Solanco Scholarship Pageant. She auditioned for the school’s spring musical, “Footloose,” and after being cast as a principal dancer, she began rehearsals earlier this month. Keeping busy is just the way Julia
likes it, however, as it gets her closer to her career goals of practicing family law or teaching music. “It’s always been a dream of mine to perform on Broadway,” she added. Although she is a principal dancer for See Miss Solanco 2020 pg 7

Lancaster Farmland Trust (LFT) celebrated farmland preservation and Lancaster County agriculture at its annual dinner on Oct. 30. More than 260 friends, farmers, and supporters attended to honor the commitment the Lancaster County community has made to the land. The event, held at the Eden Resort and Suites, raised more than $160,000 for farmland preservation. Jeff Swinehart, chief operating officer for LFT, announced that over the past year, the organization worked with 11 farm families to preserve 650 acres of Lancaster County farmland. Since its start in 1988, the nonprofit has protected a total of 504 farms covering more than 30,600 acres. Pennsylvania Secretary of Agriculture Russell Redding attended the event and spoke about the ongoing importance of farmland preservation and Lancaster County’s foundational role in the movement in Pennsylvania. He cited the partnership between the Lancaster County Agricultural Preserve Board and Lancaster Farmland Trust as a model for achieving success in preserving what is special about Lancaster County. The highlight of the evening was the annual Acres for Auction, at which attendees entered “bids” to preserve two family farms. During this year’s successful “auction,” LFT raised enough money to preserve a 77-acre farm in Drumore Township and a 50-acre farm in Elizabeth Township. Farm families in attendance received a token of appreciation for their commitment to farmland preservation. Also during the evening’s festivities, LFT honored partners and volunteers who contributed to another successful year for LFT. The Amos Funk Spirit of Cooperation Award was presented to Salisbury Township for its partnership with LFT to improve water quality on farms in the municipality. The Darvin Boyd Service to Agriculture Award went to Christ Taylor, a longtime supporter, board of trustees member, and preserved farm owner, for his efforts to preserve farmland. Kay Collier received the “Consider It Done” Award for generously contributing her time and talents to support the mission of LFT. The event saw the support of the local and regional business community, as well. More than 30 businesses supported the event, including Turkey Hill Dairy as the Heritage Sponsor. was made to the pageant this year that might see an increase in participation, however. Instead of the traditional swimwear segment, the contestants modeled activewear. Julia expressed her gratitude for the shift to more modest attire and noted that she would have been reluctant to enter had she been required to model swimwear. All of Julia’s pageant attire was purchased from thrift shops. “That was an accomplishment,” she commented. “(The gowns) definitely took a while to find.” Miss Pennsylvania 2019 Tiffany Seitz was the master of ceremonies for the Miss Solanco pageant. At the pageant’s conclusion, Anna Kreider was named first runner-up and winner of a $1,000 scholarship. Caroline Arrowsmith is second runner-up and received an $800 scholarship. Nicole Kudia was named Miss Congeniality. Representatives of organizations that would like Julia to appear at their events as Miss Solanco may contact Marla Davis at mpeiffer93@gmail.com. There is no cost, but donations for scholarships will be accepted.

“Footloose,” Julia feels her talents lie elsewhere. “I’m way more of a singer than a dancer,” she said. “I sing and act.” Julia employed her vocal skills during the 65th annual Miss Solanco Scholarship Pageant presented by the Quarryville Teenage Club on Nov. 30. She sang “Think of Me” from “The Phantom of the Opera” during the talent portion of the competition. Winning the title of Miss Solanco 2020 is helping with her college plans, as the crown and title were accompanied by a $2,000 scholarship. “I would prefer not to be in a ton of debt when I graduate,” Julia said. “We’re getting an early start.” Admittedly, the lure of the scholarship is what drew Julia to Miss Solanco. “I didn’t think going into a pageant was something I’d love,” she admitted. “But I made a lot of really close friends, and I learned a lot of skills I wouldn’t have otherwise.” One of the most significant skills Julia learned during the preparation process is interviewing. During the pageant, she had a private interview with the judges, and then she answered questions extemporaneously on stage. She has also appeared at a number of community events such as the Christmas tree lighting in Quarryville, a Santa Claus visit with the Quarryville Fire Company, and a wreath-laying ceremony on veterans’ graves. At age 15, Julia is the youngest-ever Miss Solanco. Because she cannot drive, her mother, Laura Spiller, has acted as chauffeur. “My mom is a trouper,” Julia said. “She takes me all around.” Julia and her family, which also includes her father, Matthew Spiller, and three younger siblings, moved from the Philadelphia area to Quarryville about seven years ago. Although Julia was too old to participate in the Miss Solanco pageant as a princess, her sister, Lily, who is now 11, has been a princess several times, so Julia was familiar with the program. “My big job this year will be recruiting people for next year,” Julia related. Only seven young women entered the recent pageant, continuing a trend of lower involvement. Up until a few years ago, the organizers had to turn applicants away because they had too many. One change

of a few of the more than 200,000 boys and youths who took part in the battles of the Civil War. Moore began the work in 1960 when he was still in high school. The writing progressed slowly as time and research allowed, and as the years passed, the author attended college, enlisted for reserve military service, married, and began a teaching career. By 1989, Moore had completed much of the manuscript,

but the first book in the series was not published until 2011. Asked how he came to receive the award, Moore leaned back and said, “That is an interesting story.” The story actually began in the 1980s, when Moore offered some photographs to Paul Sanborn, who was then a historian with the Freedoms Foundation. At the same time, he showed Sanborn the manuscript for “Journey Into Darkness.” “(Sanborn) thought it looked interesting,” said Moore, who in February of 1989 received a letter from Sanborn

saying he had nominated Moore for the award. Moore kept a copy of the letter, but he never heard any more about the award. In 2017, Moore tried to contact Sanborn, wanting to show him the published work. He spoke with a representative of the Freedoms Foundation named Kevin Ferris. Ferris was unable to connect Moore with Sanborn, but he did give Moore information on how to submit an application for consideration for the award. On Dec. 17, 2018, Moore submitted his work in the public communications category of the Freedoms Foundation National Awards program. The entry included a one-page summary and several supporting documents, which could be letters of commendation, photographs, news clippings, or a supporting video. Included with Moore’s submission was a note of commendation from Lloyd Alexander, author of “The Black Cauldron.” “(Alexander) lived in the area where I was teaching when I taught at The Episcopal Academy’s Devon campus,” explained Moore, who visited Alexander with his students. Moore also shared his work with Alexander, who in December of 1989 sent Moore a letter noting how much he enjoyed the class visits and adding, “Best yet is your gift of the ‘Journey Into Darkness’ volumes. ... Now that I see the books all together, I … am enormously impressed.” Moore also included a letter from Jim Lighthizer, president of the Civil War Trust. Moore had originally contacted the trust concerning a historic site called Stones River National Battlefield located in Murfreesboro, Tenn. “Up From Corinth,” one of the books in the “Journey Into Darkness” series, describes the extremely difficult battle that began in that area on New Year’s Eve of 1862 in the pouring rain. “I sent him the excerpt (describing the battle),” said Moore. “(Lighthizer) wrote back that one of the key components of the Civil War Trust’s mission is to educate the public about the importance of battlefields in our nation’s history. “He said, ‘Your thoroughly researched and thoughtfully written series supplements this mission very well.’” Each June, Moore takes part in the Civil War Living History and Tactical Exercises event at the Robert Fulton Birthplace, 1932 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville. A young man named Paul Wunderlich works with him portraying 12-year-old Sgt. John Lincoln Clem to tell visitors the story of one of the boys of the war. The Freedoms Foundation National Awards have recognized responsible citizens with the George Washington Honor Medal since 1949, honoring more than 50,000 citizens. Moore will receive the medal at an awards ceremony scheduled to be conducted at the Valley Forge Volunteer Chapter of the Freedoms Foundation in February 2020. Pictured on front: Author Joel Moore stands on the steps of a hotel in Christiana as part of a celebration of the Christiana Resistance. Moore was recently notified that he has won the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge award known as the George Washington Honor Medal for his Civil War book series “Journey Into Darkness.”

through the program, you teach others,” Fairchild said. “You get this neat mentor/mentee thing going on.” 4-H offers opportunities to compete in competitive trail riding, driving, and Western, English, and saddle seat styles of riding. The Rough Riders have two fun shows a year, which are held at the Columbia Riding Club, 1800 Franklin St., Columbia. Lancaster County 4-H also hosts a local competitive show, and club members can advance to district and state levels. “I love 4-H because we try to expose the kids to all the disciplines,” Fairchild said. “If we can expose them to all the opportunities out there, then they can create connections to be involved in whatever becomes their lifetime interest in riding.” 4-H members have gone on to compete in high school rodeo, Pony Club, racing, and polo, Fairchild said, adding, “They are the foundation of who are running the horse programs in the area.” There is a cost to join a 4-H club. Rough Riders holds a sub sale in February to raise money for activities and for charity. Club members vote on recipients for the charitable donations, which usually are related to horses. The other portion of the proceeds goes to the senior center, the Columbia Riding Club, the Maryland-based stable where the summer campout is held, and the costs of hosting a show, including renting the grounds and buying trophies and ribbons. Additionally, the club offers pony rides at the annual Rubber Ducky Race and Festival and splits the proceeds with the Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development. For information about the Hooves & Hearts, readers may call Walborn at 717330-6299. Readers with questions about the Rough Riders may call Fairchild at 717-3945161 or organizational leader Debbie Anspach at 717-786-9324.

Both the Rough Riders and Hooves & Hearts clubs are open to youths ages 8 to 18. The Cloverbud Horse Program is open to children ages 5 to 7. “You usually want to choose a club based on geography because you’re driving to events. You can be more active in the program if you choose one that’s in your backyard,” said Rough Riders teen leader coach Cindy Fairchild. “If there are two that are close, go to both reorganizational meetings so you can get a feel for both clubs.” The leader of the Hooves & Hearts, Amy Walborn, started the club after her children became involved with the Rough Riders. “We try to share our depth of knowledge between the two programs,” Fairchild said. The 4-H cycle renews in January, and 4H clubs hold reorganizational meetings that month to plan activities for the year. The Rough Riders will meet on Thursday, Jan. 2, at 7 p.m. at the senior center, and the Hooves & Hearts will meet on Thursday, Jan. 16, at 7 p.m. at Stehman Memorial UMC. Parents are expected to stay for the meetings. “We rely very strongly on parent participation, particularly with young children,” Fairchild said. Horse ownership is not required for club membership. The 4-H program offers both practical and theoretical education, and club members without horses may partner with those who do have mounts for shows and other hands-on activities. Fairchild noted that the Rough Riders club had 13 teen leaders last year, and part of their responsibilities was partnering with new club members. One youngster did so well with her teen leader that she advanced to state-level competition. “We interact like a family. You look up to your teen leader, the president, (and) the vice president, and when you have gone

Lancaster County police departments and first responders joined together with Faulkner Chevrolet employees in November to support the Beards for Brothers campaign. Faulkner Chevrolet joined local Lancaster County police departments and first responders in November to support the 2019 Beards for Brothers campaign. The campaign was started by Officer Bill Watt of West Hempfield Township. Each year, officers select a first responder or organization from the community who is currently battling cancer or provides care to those battling cancer. This year, the Beards for Brothers campaign raised money for Police Sgt. Harold E. Gainer Jr., who retired after 25 years of service in East Hempfield
Township. He also served two years in the United States Marine Corps, serving his country with distinction fighting in the Vietnam War. In January of this year, he was diagnosed with a form of leukemia. Also supported through the fundraiser was Andrew Etman, an EMT volunteer and firefighter, was diagnosed over the summer with stage 4 diffused large B-cell non-Hodgkins lymphoma.
