Welcome 2 - Solanco

Fair Supplement - September 11, 2013

It's fa i r t - won' ime t you jo

in us?

The Southern Lancaster County Fair Association welcomes you to its annual agriculture fair. Experience the same wholesome atmosphere filled with fellowship, food and friendly competition today that the founders of the Solanco Fair envisioned over 60 years ago. In the spring of 1950, a group of farm women enthusiastically decided that the Solanco area needed a fair of its own. With the help of many different community and agricultural based organizations, in September of that same year, the first Solanco Fair made its debut and was here to stay. The Solanco Fair is not only a vital part of the Southern End Community; it reflects the spirit and values of the individuals living in the community. Dedicated citizens volunteer their time and many talents throughout the year to ensure a successful event. At the fair, they can be found diligently working to supervise the many behind-the-scenes details that make the event run like a well-oiled machine. It is with deep appreciation that we say thank you to these friends, businesses and community organizations.

Attracting individuals of all ages, the Solanco Fair is a work in progress. Over the years, the fair has both improved and built new facilities on the fairgrounds, added new entertaining events to its three-day line-up, and welcomed new categories in which to display competitive handiwork. While the Fair Association works to see that the Solanco Fair changes to meet the needs of the growing community, it is also a source of pride that the fair retains much of the same community spirit, volunteer dedication, and agricultural heritage as that of the very first fair. Every September in Southern Lancaster County you will find the FFA and 4-H members grooming their animals for the show, proud cooks in their kitchen baking treats for the judges to sample, farmers and small gardeners choosing their produce for competition, young children participating in the parades, and an overall enthusiastic and excited attitude in the citizens of the Solanco area. - The Southern Lancaster County Fair Association

Each year, the art used on the cover of the Solanco Fair Book is selected from the artwork of Solanco School District middle school students. The winning artist this year is Alana Sanchez, who was an eighth-grade student at Swift Middle School when she drew the cover design. “Everybody else was doing landscapes, (so) I wanted to do something different. A barn popped into my mind,” Alana said, explaining how she came up with the idea for the cover. Using the barn setting as a background, Alana was able to integrate a number of elements into her drawing. Spider webs throughout the page draw the viewer’s eye around the picture so that everything is noticed. Alana likes working in pencil and creating black-and-

white drawings. “I like the shading instead of coloring,” she said. Alana was very s u r prised spare time writw h e n ing short stories she was and fiction. We had a fair like that where I grew up,” Donna said. “I really like the fries. They have good fries, and I like hanging out with my friends,” Alana said, adding that she also likes to see the animals at the fair. “The little ducks are adorable.”

By Dayna M. Reidenouer The sweet, cinnamon aroma of freshly fried funnel cakes and elephant ears (also known as “frying saucers”) has been a familiar fragrance at the Solanco Fair for more than 30 years. Making the tasty treats in a little white booth on the fairgrounds are members of Society of Farm Women No. 15, along with almost 50 additional individuals who volunteer for the occasion. “We couldn’t begin to do it without the volunteers,” said Charlotte Stoner, Farm Women No. 15 member.

Thanks to the efforts of the volunteers and to the community members who purchased more than 3,500 funnel cakes and 910 elephant ears a t

Half of the proceeds were given to the fair association, and the remain-

Mennonite Central Committee Material Resources Center in Ephrata, where the group volunteers once a year.

It also gave checks for $2,500 to the Solanco Neighborhood Ministries food bank and to the Quarryville Library. “Not everyone has computers, so we want to make sure the library (where people can access computers free of charge) keeps running,” Stoner commented. Farm Women No. 15 raises all of its funds for philanthropy through the funnel cake stand, Stoner noted. In addition to the aforementioned organizations, recipients of those funds have included the Ronald McDonald House,

Schreiber Pediatric Rehab Center, the American Cancer Society, and the American Heart Association. The group also awards scholarships to Solanco High School graduating seniors who have been active in consumer science and FFA. As additional needs are made known to the chapter, the group aims to meet them, whether through donations or service. Initially, the chapter was formed in 1938 by Anna Schreiber of Kirkwood. Through the years, the group has helped to establish the Solanco Fair, sold food at estate sales and at Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community celebrations, and made pastries to support various parent-teacher associations. The club meets monthly, and while its members do not all live on farms, the meetings do feature speakers on a variety of agricultural topics. “We try to keep up with what’s happening with the issues,” Stoner remarked. Farm Women was created in 1914 by a farm wife in

Somerset County, Stoner added. “She decided that if the men could go to the farm bureau, the women could have their own group,” Stoner explained. “Some of us are second- and thirdgeneration Farm Women members.” The club members are resourceful, as demonstrated in April 1979 when the group made funnel cakes at the 250th Lancaster County anniversary celebration held in Lancaster County Central Park. “They took off with electric skillets and equipment to mix and fry, with the exception of a can opener for the Crisco (in which the funnel cakes were fried). They improvised and realized a profit to the society of $447.10,” Stoner reported. “We (also) set up stands and sold on the parade route of the Lancaster County Fireman’s Parade (that year) and used refrigerator boxes to keep the wind from blowing our gas burners out – not smart, but we are farm

Churches Solanco Fair participate in

By Marcella Peyre-Ferry

Churches play an important role in the community and in the Solanco Fair. Many local churches participate in the fair parade, run concession stands, and man booths at the fair each year. The parade is the most visible spot for churches, where floats show off the energy and imagination of the various congregations while they compete for awards. “Our real connection to the fair is the parade,” said pastor Marlin Nafziger of Timberline Church. Timberline’s float is immediately recognizable by the music of the praise band it carries. “Music is a big part of our church. One of the reasons we do this is because this is an area we feel strongly about and nobody else is doing it. It also speaks to who we are, the kind of music we do here, the kind of people we are - for us it’s just an opportunity to say to the community that the church really cares,” Nafziger said. All segments of the con-

gregation are involved in the parade each year, with small children riding on the float with the praise band, people walking along side handing out fliers and small items, and the teens of the Praise in Motion group following the float. “They do some kind of dance or creative movement to the music the praise group plays,” coordinator Dawn Waltman said. “As the band goes along, you hear people singing with it. People get excited about the music.” While the music and dance is fun for the spectators, the float is also a chance for the church to connect with the community. “It’s a rare opportunity that thousands of people come to one location. We believe we have a powerful message, not only the message of the Gospel but a message of hope. The times we are involved in right now are difficult; people are just struggling. When we come down with our float it brings a smile to their faces and gets their feet tapping,” Waltman said. “It’s good for the community, and it helps

them understand who we are and what we are.” Bethesda United Methodist Church entered the Solanco Fair Parade for the first time last year and won a second-place award. “It was the theme ‘That OldTime Religion,’” Rev. Keith Price said. “We designed (the float) like a church. We had a pulpit up front and pews.” Price credits youth members Katie Althouse, Emily Roberts, and Kathlyn Mowery for sparking the energy needed to compete in the parade. “The girls in the Sunday school class got the ball rolling. They were the prime movers,” Price said, also crediting 92-yearold church member Sue Henry who rode on the float. “I guess she was inspired like the rest of us.” Because Bethesda is a bit off the beaten track in Holtwood, the church’s presence in the parade is a way to let the community know about it. It is also a good way to get the members of the church to work together. “Any kind of project where you can get people working together fires

them up and gets people enthusiastic about cooperating,” Price said. Participation in the fair does not end with the parade. Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren keeps members busy every year at the fair by running the milkshake stand all day Wednesday. The day’s proceeds benefit the congregation’s youth group, but adults are needed too to be sure every shift is covered. “We do it as a fundraiser,” pastor Misty Wintsch said. She explained that the stand is run by the dairy council, which provides materials and trains the milkshake makers. At the end of each day, the organization that runs the stand receives the proceeds that remain after all the costs have been paid. “It gives the (teens) some responsibility. They really enjoy getting together. It’s a fellowship thing,” Wintsch added. Wintsch has found that almost everyone in the church is also involved in the fair. “I go to the fair every year with my camera and stop everyone I know to take their picture,” she said.
