Flooring
Choosing the right flooring for a home is no small task. When choosing flooring, homeowners may feel overwhelmed by the options, from numerous types of carpet and other flooring to the increasing variety of eco-friendly options. Each type of flooring can look great in its own way, which is why homeowners may struggle to find the right fit for their homes. Becoming educated about flooring can make the process of choosing a new floor less overwhelming and more enjoyable.
HARDWOOD
Hardwood floors are a favorite of homeowners aiming for a traditional look. Homes with open floor plans often benefit from hardwood flooring, as it creates a feeling of continuity. Some species of hardwood used for flooring include oak, maple, cherry, and more exotic imported options carrying hefty price tags. More traditional hardwood flooring is less expensive, and solid wood flooring can be refinished several times to increase its lifespan.
ENGINEERED WOOD
Engineered wood, made up of real hardwood veneer attached to several layers of plywood, is less susceptible to temperature changes and humidity than solid wood. Some varieties include substrates made from recycled wood fiber and stone dust, which may appeal to eco-friendly homeowners. Those who want to install their own floors may prefer engineered wood, which is available in self-locking parquet or plank squares that can be installed without using glue or nails.
RECLAIMED WOOD
Rather than purchasing brand-new hardwood planks for flooring, homeowners can opt for reclaimed wood reused from other building applications. After some sanding, staining, and finishing, reclaimed wood provides a viable hardwood flooring option.
BAMBOO
Popular among eco-conscious homeowners, this flooring option comes from plants that regenerate quickly. Bamboo flooring is made of strands of bamboo that are glued together, forming engineered planks or solid strips that can be stained in many different hues. The material is strong and able to resist the negative effects of fluctuating humidity, which include swelling and contraction. Also, bamboo repels water and can be used for flooring in areas such as in bathrooms, entryways, and mudrooms.
LAMINATE
Laminate flooring is among the less expensive flooring materials to buy and install, and an array of options are available. Floating laminate flooring systems can be installed over existing floors without glue or nails. Although laminate flooring may look similar to real wood, the plastic coating on the top layer of laminate flooring is often a giveaway. This top layer is a photographic imprint on the face of each board.
CORK
Cork, which is a sustainable flooring option, is harvested from the bark of cork trees. It is popular in kitchens and bathrooms because cork tiles have a naturally nonslip surface. Also, it has fire-retardant properties and may naturally repel insects. The appearance of cork floors is speckled thanks to the grain patterns of the trees from which it is harvested. Cork flooring may need to be resealed every few years to guard against stains and potential moisture issues.
RUBBER
Rubber flooring may call to mind fitness gyms and playground safety substrate, but it is also finding its way into homes. Made from recycled tires, rubber flooring is flexible underfoot and can be long-lasting and colorful.
CARPETS
When buying carpet for the first time, homeowners will likely encounter unfamiliar terminology and information on the vast array of options. Various fibers and types of carpets are available, and homeowners who learn a bit about their options can be better prepared when the time comes to select a carpet.
CARPET FIBERS
This term refers to the type of material used to make a particular carpet. No two fibers are the same, as each feels different to the touch and reacts differently to routine wear and tear. The following are some popular carpet fibers: ¡ Nylon: The most durable carpet fiber, nylon is available in a wide range of styles and is a flexible material. Many nylon carpets come with a stain-resistant treatment.

· Polyester: Highly resistant to stains and fading, polyester is soft, and today's polyester carpets are more resilient and durable than those of yesteryear. · Triexta: Triexta is a type of polyester fiber that is especially soft. However, these fibers are particularly susceptible to stains and spills. · Olefin: This option is often among the least expensive, thanks in part to its lack of durability compared to other fibers. However, olefin carpet fibers repel UV rays and therefore do not fade when exposed to sunlight. · Wool: Wool tends to be the most expensive carpet fiber, but it offers considerable durability and a soft feel. Wool carpets can last several decades, but they are high maintenance and not especially resistant to stains.

S920052
The type, or style, of carpet refers to how the carpet is designed. The type of carpet homeowners choose may depend on the planned location of the carpet within the home. · Frieze: Sometimes referred to as twist carpet, it is made of twisted strands, offering a modern and stylish look. Frieze carpet can be expensive, so some homeowners install it in areas that are not susceptible to high traffic. · Saxony/cut pile: Saxony or cut pile carpet is ideal for high-traffic areas, as it tends to be resistant to matting and crushing and still feels soft underfoot. · Berber: Often referred to as loop carpets, these are especially durable and can be a good option for high-traffic areas of a home. A traditional loop carpet is created when yarn is sewn or tufted into the backing and left uncut. · “Green” carpeting: Options of sustainable carpets and rugs may include wool carpets made with undyed or vegetable-dyed yarns, carpets made from recycled materials, and carpets that utilize water-based, low-VOC (volatile organic compounds) adhesives paired with recycled cotton padding. Flooring choices vary greatly, and it can be easy for homeowners to become overwhelmed by all of the options at their disposal. But taking time to understand each of those options can make the process of choosing a floor much more relaxed and enjoyable.

INDOOR GARDENING:
Breat h Fresh Air of
Gardening is a rewarding hobby that can pay a host of dividends, both for the planet and for the gardeners. Healthy plant life can help clean the air by absorbing carbon dioxide and various air pollutants, while the act of gardening can help people combat stress. The benefit of gardening apply not only when plants are tended outdoors, but also when they are grown indoors. According to an article published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives in October 2011, houseplants can work wonders when it comes to improving overall environmental and human health, as they remove toxins from air, soil, and water by metabolizing some toxic chemicals, sequestering such toxins by incorporating them into plant tissues, and releasing harmless byproducts. While there are benefits to using filtration systems and air purifiers, individuals who want the air in their homes to be as clean as possible may benefit from introducing certain houseplants indoors. The following are a handful of plants that can help to improve indoor air quality:
· Aloe vera:
Aloe vera is often associated with hand creams and hand soaps, but the aloe vera plant, a succulent that even novice gardeners should have no
home appeal
· Spider plant:
Spider plants are resilient, and that makes them great houseplants for busy people who may not regularly remember to care for their plants. In addition, spider plants are pet-friendly and can be used to combat air pollutants such as benzene, carbon dioxide, formaldehyde, and xylene.
· English ivy:
NASA researchers exploring the possibilities of long-term space habitation found that certain houseplants were more effective at cleaning air inside energy-efficient, nonventilated buildings than others. One such plant was English ivy, which can effectively combat formaldehyde.
· Bamboo palm:
Bamboo palms also found their way onto NASA's list. Bamboo palm plants thrive indoors, where they are especially effective at filtering out the chemicals benzene and trichloroethylene. Gardening has been proven to be a soothing hobby that can help gardeners reduce stress. But the health benefits of gardening can extend indoors as well.

Garden
Homeowners can grow an array of herbs inside, providing a bounty of fresh ingredients that can be used to spruce up meals year-round. Herb gardens do not require large pots or much space, as the plants themselves are relatively compact. Keep in mind: -Indoor growing areas must have adequate light. Such lighting will simulate the longer days of summer. Ideally, the herbs will have a southern exposure, with at least eight hours of sunlight a day. Sunlight can be supplemented with grow lights. -Ensure the air is humid enough. Indoor air can become too dry for herbs – and even humidity in a greenhouse window in the kitchen may not be enough – so consider misting the plants daily or placing herb pots on top of a water-filled tray with pebbles so that evaporating water will add moisture without making the roots soggy. -Take measures to deter insects. Instead of using soil from outdoors, which may already contain insects, use packaged soil or a nonsoil alternative that will hold moisture. If small insects appear, use a mist of soapy water to get rid of them. -Consider the herbs’ watering needs. To make maintenance easier, group herbs together according to their watering needs. New sprouts generally need more water than established plants. -Prune the herbs as needed for recipes. If the herbs experience a growth spurt, trim some of the plants and freeze the herbs for later use. -Think outside the box. Many indoor herb gardeners begin by growing parsley, chives, oregano, and basil, but homeowners may experiment with just about any herb.

Fall To-Do List Home Improvement Projects for the
Homeowners know that maintaining a house can be a year-round job. No home is immune to wear and tear, and individuals should try to stay two steps ahead to ensure their homes stay attractive and do not succumb to the elements. The following are a few items people can add to their fall home improvement to-do lists that can help lower energy bills, prevent costly repairs, and/or increase the lifespan of a home.
1 2
Inspect heating and ventilation -
Examine the fireplace and chimney system to ensure that no soot or creosote has collected. Any cracks or voids could potentially cause a fire. Before turning on the furnace or boiler, replace the air filter and hire a professional to inspect the unit more thoroughly. These steps will improve the efficiency and life of the furnace and will ensure stable indoor air quality.
Seal windows and doors - Before temperatures start drop-
ping, homeowners will want to inspect their windows and doorways for leaks. If not properly sealed, windows and doors can be a major culprit for heat loss. Over time, cracks can develop around windows and doorways through which cold air can enter a home. Homeowners who do not suspect leaks may respond by turning up their thermostats, which can prove quite expensive. Choose a windy autumn day to place a hand by windows and external doorways to try to feel drafts. Also, inspect the weather-stripping around the home's windows and doors for leaks, rot, or decay. Seal any cracks as soon as possible. Repair or replace structural framing, and caulk inside and out, if necessary.
3
Insulate well - One of the easiest and most effective defenses
against heat loss is proper insulation. Prevent cold drafts from entering and heated air from escaping through basement headers, which, when left exposed, can make furnaces work harder. Look for a moisture-resistant product offering high thermal performance. Cut the batt to fit the cavity and press into place. The insulation should help improve energy efficiency as soon as it is in place and provide savings over the lifetime of a home. Some materials can also be used to top or replace old attic insulation.
4 5
Continue backyard care - Trim overgrown trees and shrubs to prevent ice-laden branches from thrashing against electrical wires and the home's exterior. Drain and then shut off any exterior faucets and sprinkler systems to prevent freezing. Ensure that rain or snow drains away from the house to avoid foundation problems. Examine the roof – To prevent a future leak, inspect the roof for shingles that are warped, damaged, or missing. Use roofing cement and a caulking gun to seal joints where
water could penetrate, such as around the chimney, skylights, or vent pipes. Water leakage and damage to the roof's interior are just two of the potentially problematic issues that can arise when roofs are battered by cold, blustery weather. Thus, many home improvement specialists advise that homeowners conduct roof inspections prior to the start of winter. Also, weather conditions in winter may not be conducive to inspecting a roof, and increased precipitation may result in costly damage. To determine if a roof is leaking, look for water stains on interior ceilings. Then climb onto the roof to identify the location of the leak and fix it before winter rains and snowfall turn the problem into something much larger. Inspect ceilings for signs of leaking after a strong rainfall, and then address any leaks immediately.
6
Inspect gutters - Individuals whose homes are surrounded by
trees may need to schedule two gutter cleaning projects. Gutters clogged with leaves and other debris can cause serious roof damage, which can extend all the way inside a home. In addition, insects or critters may make nesting areas in clogged gutters. Always stand on a ladder when cleaning gutters, wearing gloves to remove items by hand and dropping leaves and debris into a trash can below. Standing on the roof and leaning over gutters greatly increases the risk of injury. If the gutters are clear when they are first examined in early fall, it is fine to wait until later in the season to give them a complete and thorough cleaning. Once the gutters are cleared, use a hose to run water through them and the downspouts to confirm that everything is functioning properly. Also, make sure that gutters and downspouts are securely fastened. Downspouts should extend at least 5 feet away from the home to prevent flooding.
7
Clean up the patio -
Patios are popular hangouts during spring and summer, and that can result in a lot of wear and tear. Once patio furniture is stored away for the winter, inspect the entire patio to determine if it needs any refurbishing. While certain patio projects may be best left for spring, homeowners can still clean any stained areas around the grill and look for cracks in the sidewalk that need to be addressed.
8
Remove window air conditioners -
If they cannot be removed, they should be sealed with caulking or tape and covered with an airtight, insulated jacket. Homeowners with forcedair systems should move furniture away from the vents so that air can flow better around the home and keep it comfortable. When it comes to preventative maintenance, a little time and effort spent during the autumn season can save thousands in energy costs and repair bills over the lifetime of a home.

10 WAYS
To Conserve Energy This
WINTER
Conserving energy in the winter is a concern for many men and women. Whether the goal is to save energy and help the environment or to trim a few dollars from winter utility bills, here are 10 ways to reduce energy consumption without sacrificing comfort this winter. 1. Have the furnace serviced. Furnace fuel consumption can be reduced by as much as 10 percent by having the system serviced yearly. Either late spring or early autumn is a good time to schedule an inspection and have filters replaced in forced-air systems. All radiators and other elements should be kept free of dust. 2. Remedy drafty windows. Drafty windows not only let cold air in but also let warm air out. This is a one-two punch in terms of energy waste, forcing heating units to work harder to regulate a consistent temperature. Caulking and weatherstripping applications are easy do-it-yourself projects. If windows are old

and especially drafty, consider replacing them. If such an undertaking will stretch the budget too far, use tightly sealed plastic sheeting to insulate drafty windows until replacements are able to be purchased. 3. Address additional leaks. Windows and doors are not the only places where cold air can get in or warm air can escape. Leaks also occur around pipes and plumbing penetrations to the home, and cold air also can enter through utility cutthroughs, light plates, and outlets. Use insulation or weatherstripping to seal leaks in these areas. 4. Decorate with light-colored furnishings. Light-hued walls and furniture will reflect the sunlight that makes it into a home while also reflecting artificial light more effectively than darker shades. This can help homeowners use lamps and other lighting less frequently. 5. Make use of the sun. In the winter, the sun's rays are not as powerful as during other seasons due to the tilt of the planet's axis. However, homeowners can still maximize daylight time for warmth by opening curtains and drapes on southern-facing windows and let warm sunlight shine through. The curtains can be closed again when evening falls. Homeowners may also turn the heat down during the day when the sun is warming the home. 6. Use fireplaces properly. Fireplaces can be unnecessary sources of drafts and leaks. Keeping the damper open is like keeping a window wide open during the winter, as it allows warm air to go right up the chimney. Keep the fireplace damper closed unless a fire is burning. When the fireplace is in use, reduce heat loss by opening dampers in the bottom of the firebox or open the nearest window slightly and close doors leading into the room. If the fireplace is more decorative than functional, keep the damper closed at all times and consider sealing the chimney. 7. Conduct an energy audit. A home energy audit, also known as a home energy assessment, is the first step to discover how much energy a home consumes and to evaluate which measures homeowners can take to make their homes more energy-efficient. Many times these government-sponsored programs are free, and an auditor will go through the home with a fine-toothed comb looking for points of potential energy loss. After the audit is conducted, homeowners can choose which repairs or modifications make the most sense for their budget and needs. 8. Adjust the direction of ceiling fan blades. Blades that spin clockwise will trap heat inside to keep rooms warmer during the cooler months. Adjust the ceiling fan to a low setting to gently push hot air back down. 9. Only heat the rooms that are being used. Close off venting or turn off radiators in spaces that are not in use. There is no point in heating unoccupied rooms. Any modifications made to insulation, windows, thermostats, and HVAC systems are not just beneficial for the winter, but they should help homeowners save money and energy in the summer, too.

Go “Green for the Holidays Though the holidays are still several months away, homeowners may already be thinking about ways to decorate their properties as they replace summer items with fall- and winter-related adornments. While these decorations certainly may be symbols of the season, they can also consume much energy and many resources. However, there are various ways to be energy-efficient with holiday decor and entertaining. Switch to LED lights. LED lights consume a fraction of the energy traditional incandescent bulbs do. While a standard string of 50 lights consumes 300 watts, LED sets only consume four watts. This saves both energy and money. Use fiber-optic decorations. Fiber optic items are lit by one light. The illumination carries through the fiber optic cables to the entire decoration. Use a power strip and timer. Plug decorations into a power strip – being sure to follow the recommended power load for safety – and hook everything up to a timer so lights are not on when no one will see them. Check light strands. Always inspect lights for frayed wires and any damage. Frayed wires are less efficient and pose a considerable safety risk. Enhance decorations. Use mirrors and reflective ornaments to give the appearance of more lights without actually adding more. Turn off ambient lighting. Christmas tree lights or the lights framing a picture window may be sufficient to light up a room. Keep lamps and overhead lighting off while the tree is lit to save money and energy. Lower the thermostat. When entertaining, turn the thermostat down a few degrees. Having extra people in a home will raise the temperature. Similarly, heat generated by the oven and other cooking appliances can warm up a home.

Invest in rechargeable batteries.
According to Energy Quest, 40 percent of all batteries are purchased during the holiday season. To power those many gifts and devices, use rechargeable batteries, which can be used again and again. Change cooking practices. Smaller appliances use less energy. Put those toaster ovens, slow cookers and electric fryers to good use. Consider only using the oven if a large meal is being cooked. Wait until the dishwasher is full. Pack in the dishes from holiday meals, and only run the dishwasher when it has been filled. Reuse items when possible. Many items around the house can be put to good use as decorations, holiday servers, or gifts. Homeowners should take inventory of what they have before they purchase new decorations.
