Dear Friends, The Susquehanna River towns of Columbia, Marietta, and Wrightsville boast a strong sense of community and pride in the rich history of this region. As we head toward the sesquicentennial of the burning of the bridge that once spanned the river between Columbia and Wrightsville, we are reminded of the “can do” attitude of area residents. Over the years that same attitude served investors and aspiring entrepreneurs well as they tackled the adversities of their eras while establishing local businesses. That confident, resourceful spirit can be found in our region’s business people even today. The Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce proudly serves area businesses located in Columbia, Marietta, Wrightsville, and beyond. Investment in SVCC membership is an investment in your business and your community. SVCC provides a wide range of services to our members including assistance in promoting your business, opportunities for networking, and coordination of grand openings and ribbon cfuttings for new businesses. SVCC continues to seek new ways to assist our member businesses in their growth and development. SVCC sponsors numerous events to help raise the visibility of your business as well as that of the Chamber and Visitors Center. Member events such as mixers, breakfast meetings, and seminars serve to educate members while connecting members to one another. Sponsorship of one of these member events places your name in front of your business peers. Your presence can further be enhanced through sponsorship of a community event. These events, coordinated by SVCC staff, raise funds to finance the operation of our Visitors Center. Among these events are the well-known Bridge Bust, the Antique, Arts & Craft Show, and two 5K runs - the River Run and the MAG Fall Flash - as well as our newest event, the popular Chiques Challenge. In addition, new community events continue to evolve from staff ideas. Sponsorship of these community events places your business name firmly in the public eye. The Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center activities and operations are coordinated and implemented by its two staff members. In her role as Executive Director, Kathleen Hohenadel coordinates member services and organizies a selection of community events. Amy Hooper, SVCC Administrative Director, manages Visitor Center services and coordinates the five anchor community events mentioned above. Both staff members communicate with membership and civic or governmental organizations and promote the area and its businesses. SVCC has been represented in the planning of events to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the burning of the Columbia - Wrightsville Bridge during the Civil War. Join us in promoting this region’s past and present through your support of these commemorative events. Your donations of time, financial backing, advertising, or attendance are all valuable to the success of this programming. Watch for updates on the activities scheduled for June 2013 as part of this remembrance. Partnerships among communities, their businesses, and their non-profit organizations serve to make all of us stronger and more successful. SVCC strives to improve the quality of life and to promote an atmosphere of business cooperation in Columbia, Marietta, and Wrightsville. This mission is easily seen in the SVCC tag line “River Towns Working Together.” SVCC service reaches beyond these river communities on both sides of the Susquehanna River, extending into Lancaster and York Counties in south-central Pennsylvania. The Chamber and Visitors Center functions under a Board of Directors and is operated by two staff members with the assistance of approximately 20 Visitor Center Volunteers. Over 100 additional volunteers from the area give of their time at our community fundraising events.

Chartered in 1928 as the Columbia Chamber of Commerce, the Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce (SVCC) began representing the tri-borough region of Columbia, Marietta and Wrightsville in the late 1980s. SVCC most visibly represents the area through its operation of the Visitors Center located along Route 30.

Lighted Display Board Member $425 yearly membership fee included all of the above plus these additional benefits: The Lighted Display Board is a lighted advertising unit that displays an 11 x 14 photo of your business. The size and location of the Lighted Display Board make it a prominent feature of the Visitors Center and give its participating membership a visual presence with real impact. Your rack cards are displayed at your photo, increasing your brochure presence 300%. Our convenient location along Route 30 is often the first stop for visitors to the area; the map at the center of the Lighted Display Board is used by staff and volunteers when giving directions to visitors, again drawing attention to the businesses promoted through this membership category. Lighted Display Board members have an additional navigation button on the membership page of the Chamber website. Look for the section that replicates the Lighted Display Board online. Additionally, through a new program implemented by SVCC, a member photo on display will never be more that three years out of date.

Susquehanna Valley What’s its CHAMBER of COMMERCE all about? “River Towns Working Together” MISSION: The Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce is a member-driven organization dedicated to preserving and strengthening the Susquehanna Valley’s business and tourism environment by providing programs and services which promote civic,cultural, business and economic growth and development.

VISITORS CENTER The Visitors Center is operated by the Chamber to provide information to the community, travelers, and tourists to the area. Members of the Chamber may place brochures, flyers, and other promotional items in the Visitors Center. Additional paid advertising is also available to members who wish to be featured in our Lighted Display Board. AFFILIATION The Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center is not organizationally a part of the Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the York County Chamber of Commerce, the Pennsylvania Dutch Convention & Visitors Bureau, or the York County Convention & Visitors Bureau. However, we do enjoy reciprocal honorary memberships with these organizations. MEMBERSHIP Almost two-thirds of our members come from the tri-borough area of Columbia, Marietta, and Wrightsville. Other areas of Lancaster and York Counties as well as regions beyond are represented in our membership. Most members join to create connections with other business people through the networking opportunities presented by SVCC; others have joined for member benefits such as insurance through PCI. FUNDING The Chamber is an independent, nonprofit 501(c)6 organization, fully funded by members of the community through contributions, membership dues, and community events. Currently, there is no funding from grants or government organization, nor are we affiliated with any other sponsoring chambers. HISTORY Early 20th Century until 1920 - Columbia Merchants and Manufacturers Association (CMMA) is active in the community. October 11, 1920 - CMMA changes name to Columbia Chamber of Commerce. July 7, 1928 - Charter is created for Columbia Chamber of Commerce. 1984 - First full-time paid staff members (Secretary and Executive Director) are introduced to the chamber.

Around 1988 - Chamber is renamed Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce and covers tri-borough area of Columbia, Marietta, and Wrightsville. 1990 - Vo-Tech holds design contest and students build new Visitors Center at 445 Linden Street, Columbia, Pa. PUBLICATIONS and WEB SITE A quarterly newsletter is available via email, regular mail, or website posting. All members are welcome to submit items of interest for inclusion in this member publication. The Chamber publishes an annual Information Guide that is distributed through our member businesses, our Visitors Center, as well as in relocation and information packets. This Information Guide is also delivered to all residences in Columbia, Marietta, and Wrightsville through the services of Engle Printing and Publishing. All SVCC members are included in the Guide and have the opportunity to place an advertisement. SVCC also workd with Integra Publishing to produce Susquehanna River Towns, a guide geared to visitors to the region. This publication includes the history of the area as well as information on activities and events hosted by community organizations. This calendar of events appeals to residents and guests alike. All SVCC members have the opportunity to place an advertisement. The SVCC website is located at www.PaRivertowns.com. Members are listed under Our Members tab with their business website linked to the SVCC site. Both print publications mentioned (Information Guide and Susquehanna River Towns) are available as links from our site. Passport to River Towns Passport to River Towns offers special discounts and promotions to “travelers” as they visit participating businesses. Get stamps from 12 “destinations” and then turn in your “passport” for a chance at a grand prize. The program runs weekends beginning January 18, 2013 and ending February 10, 2013. The course for this event is a popular one - it crosses the Susquehanna River via the Veterans Memorial Bridge (Rt. 462) between Lancaster and York Counties which is closed to vehicular traffic during the event. Enjoy the scenic course against the fall foliage of the river valley. The Run begins in Wrightsville at 8:30 a.m. and finishes in “record time” against this autumn backdrop. Pre-registration is available. Participants may register the day of the Run beginning at 7:30 a.m. The Run is held rain or shine. Walkers and those with strollers welcome to participate.
