Hi And Lows

Through The

Honeymoon Destination That Explore The Vastness O

By Krista Hurley

Fifty-five years ago, in April 1967, Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell released the hit single “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” reminding us that there ain’t no mountain high, valley low, or river wide enough to keep those in love apart. With those geographic standards in mind, here are some destinations you can consider for your honeymoon to symbolize the vastness of love – that there's nothing can separate you and your soon-to-be spouse.

ighs s:

ns Of Love

Ain’t No Mountain High Enough:

Poconos, Pennsylvania: Northeastern PA is known for more than just being the setting of the hit television show “The Office.” In fact, 2,400 square miles of the region is home to the Pocono Mountains, which offer an almost unending range of outdoor activities for newlyweds: more than 260 miles of hiking and biking trails, along with picturesque waterfalls, countless ski trails, fishing, and whitewater rafting. Of course, the region boasts more leisurely offerings as well, from art exhibits and cultural tours to shops and antiques. And, if you time your visit right, you can experience the local culture from the vantage point of one of the area’s festivals. You can even check out Grey Towers, the Milford estate of the Pinchot family, notably Gifford Pinchot, known as the Father of Forestry for his conservation efforts. In the midst of whatever activities you choose, don’t forget to sit back, relax, and enjoy the views!

Factory Falls is one of three waterfalls showcased at George W. Childs Park in Pike County. Blue Ridge Mountains, Georgia: The Blue Ridge Mountains stretch all the way from southern PA to Georgia, offering majestic views the entire way. One option for peace and quiet on your honeymoon is to head to the southernmost point of the range in Pickens County, Georgia. You’ll have ample opportunities to enjoy the sights and sounds of nature, whether you hike to the southernmost peak, Mount Oglethorpe; take on the moderate Burnt Mountain Preserve Trail; or tackle the strenuous Tobacco Pouch Loop. Ready for a change of scenery? Make your way to Jasper, where you can catch a show by the Tater Patch Players, tour the Old Pickens County Jail, or hit some antiques shops to find that perfect treasure to adorn your home. If you want to give your feet a rest, make your way to Bent Tree Stables to view the area from horseback! Photo by Krista Hurley

Mae Hong Son City, Thailand: Wat Phrathat Doi Kongmu, The town of approximately Thailand 7,000 residents is nestled in the Shan Hills in northwest Thailand, offering visitors an opportunity to become immersed in the culture due to the town’s remote location. Stop by the morning market of Talat Chao and grab breakfast at a local restaurant. An assortment of delicious fare is available at the city’s night market, as well. Be sure to check out the Wat Phrathat Doi Kongmu, the oldest temple in the area; located on top of Doi Kongmu hill, it boasts spectacular views of the sunrise. In addition to numerous temples showcasing a variety of architectural inspiration and various hiking trails, there are ample opportunities to visit the area’s hill tribe villages, such as the traditional long neck village of Huay Pu Keng; caves, such as the Tham Pla (Fish Cave); waterfalls, including Pha Suea Waterfall; and hot springs.

Lakes and mountains are not in short supply in Glacier National Park.

Also Worth Checking Out: Glacier National Park, Montana: Whether you hike, take to the water, cycle, or drive, you can bask in the beauty of the park, which showcases the stunning Rocky Mountains and picturesque glaciers. Bring some binoculars to look for wildlife roaming the mountainsides hundreds of feet above. And be sure to drive the Going-to-the-Sun Road, which boasts views that will leave you breathless.

Bald Eagle Valley, Pennsylvania: A rural paradise awaits in Bald Eagle Valley, sandwiched between the West Branch Susquehanna Valley and the Nittany Valley. Be sure to spend some time in Bald Eagle State Park in Howard, where you and your new spouse will find ample outdoor activities on the Foster Joseph Sayers Reservoir, ranging from boating and fishing to swimming and wildlife watching. Among the lodging options is the gorgeous Nature Inn at Bald Eagle, which offers stunning views and uses green building technologies. When the itch for outdoor recreation has been scratched, take a short drive to Lock Haven to cut a rug on the dance floor at The Fallon House, expand your knowledge of aircraft at the Piper Aviation Museum, or stroll along the West Branch Susquehanna River. Willamette Valley, Oregon: In the 1800s, the 150-mile Willamette Valley was the destination of countless pioneers traversing the country in their wagons on the Oregon Trail. In the present day, it can also be the destination for newlyweds on their honeymoons! The valley has been aptly dubbed Oregon Wine Country, as it is home to more than 500 wineries, so you and your new spouse may want to take a drive to explore the countryside and discover your new favorite wine. While the region does maintain its pastoral charm, it is also home to six of Oregon’s largest cities, so you’ll have endless options when it comes to finding the accommodations, dining spots, activities, entertainment, arts, tours, and more that will make your honeymoon the memorably romantic experience you’ve always dreamed of.

11 theweddingplanneronline.com

Also Worth Checking Out: Valle de Elqui, Chile: Small towns abound in the region, which is known for its agriculture, tourism, and vineyards. Sample the locally made Syrah and Carmenere wines and indulge in the traditional fare. Biking, horseback riding, hiking, and tours offer unique views of the area. Once the sun sets, head outside and be awestruck by the views of the night sky; the valley was recognized as the first International Dark Skies Sanctuary in the world.

The Wedding Planner

Telemark, Norway: The Telemark region is considered Norway’s “Wild West,” boasting breathtaking scenery, recreational opportunities, authentic heritage and culture, and more. Newlyweds looking for views can hike to the summit of Gaustatoppen – 6,177 feet above sea level – or take an underground cable car to the top. At the foot of the mountain is the town of Rjukan, which appears the same now as it did more than a century ago. The municipality of Hjartdal also offers quaint lodging, from the Tuddal Høyfjellshotell to Nutheim Gjestgiveri. Looking for entertainment? Make your way to Notodden, which hosts the Notodden Blues Festival each August. Nearby, check out the Heddal Stave Church, the largest Viking-era church in Norway. Take a short drive north to Tinn Lake, one of the deepest lakes in Europe, and catch a ride on the ferry Storegut if you’re visiting in summertime.

The valley district of Flatdal in Norway’s Telemark region is surrounded by majestic mountains. In Lake Seljord, just around the bend, there have reportedly been sightings of Selma, a legendary sea serpent.

*Ian Brodie is an award-winning landscape and unit stills photographer, film tourism expert, and internationally successful author with over 20 books published with nearly 2 million copies sold, including “The Lord of the Rings Location Guidebook” and “Cameras in Narnia.” Based in Australia, Ian Brodie has collaborated with Norway Communicates in a range of film and tourism projects, including the Wild Telemark, with photos from this region profiled in this magazine. Ain’t No River Wide Enough:

Itasca State Park, Minnesota: It’s often said that big things come from small beginnings. That is certainly true of the more-than-2,300mile Mississippi River, which springs from Lake Itasca, nestled within the borders of Itasca State Park in northcentral Minnesota. While the Mississippi’s headwaters are certainly a draw of the park, you’ll find plenty else to do, from exploring the Itasca Wilderness Sanctuary to taking tours of the lake to renting watercraft to enjoying local eateries. You can even take in a perforPhoto by Krista Hurley mance by the nearby Northern The headwaters of the Mississippi River find their home in Itasca State Light Opera Company. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania: One river may not be wide enough to keep couples apart, but what about three? The Ohio, the Allegheny, and the Monongahela – which converge in Pittsburgh – set the tone of the city. There are a variety of ways to experience all that Pittsburgh has to offer, from shopping in the Strip District, sampling local brews, and tasting regional cuisine to exploring parks such as the Pittsburgh Botanic Garden and Point State Park and visiting museums. Narrowing Down Your Dream Honeymoon Location Are you and your spouse-to-be narrowing down your options but unsure of your next steps? David John Smith, film producer, author, founder of Norway Communicates, and creator, with Ian Brodie, of the Wild Telemark, suggests exploring your potential destination or destinations from a distance. “Before you come to the Wild Telemark, take time to explore the website www.wildtelemark.com,” he advises. “You will get to know your way around here – and get a head start on a memorable honeymoon.”

The Arno runs through Pisa on its way to the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Pisa, Italy: Mention Pisa and the first thought that comes to mind is likely the Leaning Tower. While the famous structure is certainly a sight to see, the city of Pisa has much else to offer its visitors, including picturesque views of the Arno, the 150-mile river that empties into the Tyrrhenian Sea just west of the city. Various options abound for mini cruises on the river, and visitors can also stroll along the waterway and the city streets, gelato in hand, to absorb the views. Indulge in some high-end shopping at the Borgo Stretto, and enjoy a wide assortment of restaurants and museums. Don't forget to try the tiramisu! Of course, make a stop at the Piazza del Duomo, which houses the Pisa Cathedral, the Pisa Baptistry, and the Leaning Tower. Want to explore the larger area? Head to Florence, Genoa, or the small Tuscan gem of Orvieto for a day trip. Also Worth Checking Out: Austin, Texas: Music fans will feel right at home in the Texas state capital, which has a reputation for a buzzing live-music scene. Those wishing for a tranquil outdoors experience should check out the Ann and Roy Butler Hike and Bike Trail, which runs along the Colorado River, as well as the Boardwalk at Lady Bird Lake. Be sure to stop by Stubb’s Bar-B-Q for some delicious Texas fare or Torchy’s Tacos to experience a regional chain!

Engaged couples may want to track down some e-books, whether provided by a tourism agency or another source. Some are interactive, bringing couples as close to the action as they can get without actually journeying to the site. One e-book on the Telemark region, found at www.wildtelemark.com/e-books, boasts 1,000-plus photos and videos on more than 250 pages. “A visitor can really get to know the region before ever stepping foot here,” says Smith. Researching others’ first-hand experiences through blogs and hashtags on social media can be helpful, too. Such accounts are where hidden gems can be unearthed for you and your honey to enjoy. But, Smith posits, while planning a honeymoon should have some structure, be sure to leave room for improvisation, whether your destination is Norway or elsewhere around the globe. “Your best strategy is to plan your trip, rent a car, and then take time to wander and explore,” he notes. “(In the Wild Telemark), you might meet a troll, you will certainly meet a Viking – and you will bring home enough memories to last a lifetime.”

the proposal: John decided to pop the question at the end of a kayaking trip he and Rebekah took in the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon with friends from church. Unbeknownst to Rebekah, John had previously asked her dad for permission to marry her and had hidden the ring in his backpack on the kayaking trip. After everyone else left for home the last morning, the couple decided to spend more time hiking in the area. After finding a gorgeous overlook with no one else in sight, John asked Rebekah to look out across the valley so he could “take a picture.” “The next thing I knew, he was right behind me and said my name; I turned and saw him down on one knee holding the ring,” Rebekah recalls. “He asked me to marry him, and in my excitement I forgot to say yes as we hugged and cried tears of joy.” “Is that a yes, then?” John asked. Through tears, Rebekah answered with a verbal affirmative, and the rest is history. “John had asked me weeks before how long I needed to plan for a wedding, and I told him at least three months,” Rebekah says. “As it turned out, it would be exactly three months to the day until our wedding.”

how they met: Rebekah and John met online during the summer of 2020. “Our first date was kayaking on the Susquehanna, and we both knew that it was the start of something amazing,” Rebekah shares. “We were very intentional on getting to know one another and seeking God’s wisdom as we grew closer together.”

The Wedding Planner: What was the first thing you did when you began to plan your wedding? What inspired you to start there? Rebekah: We started by researching and contacting wedding venues. With three months’ time, finding a venue was the first priority so we could set a date and send out invitations. TWP: How did you select the bride’s dress, the groom’s attire, and the outfits of the members of the wedding party?

theweddingplanneronline.com

Rebekah: I had a variety of ideas collected on Pinterest, so I knew what I wanted the groom and wedding party to wear, but I also wanted the attire to be reasonably priced and comfortable. I waited for sales at Kohl’s before having the groom and groomsmen purchase matching vests, shirts, and khakis, all items that they could wear again. I gave the bridesmaids the color I wanted them to wear and had them choose a dress that they felt most comfortable in. For my dress, I visited several bridal boutiques with my mom. There are so many beautiful options for under $1,000! The original style I had imagined myself in was not the style I ended up buying. Brides, try on every style of dress; it is not every day you get to try on gorgeous gowns – and you might be surprised with what you end up choosing! I found my dress, the dress, at Dream Bridal Resale. My experience here, both in service and dress variety, was wonderful. continued on page 20 t un sco d Di is A 10%ith th W

TWP: How did you incorporate the tastes and personalities of both the bride and the groom into the wedding? Rebekah: As believers in Christ, my husband and I wanted to honor God with our wedding, so we incorporated worship, Communion, and prayer into the service. I chose the décor pieces, designed the table decorations, and created the signs for our wedding. Both my husband and I love playing games with friends and family, so we had several yard games available before the reception started. We also left the reception in my husband’s convertible and included the car in some of our wedding photos. TWP: What did you find to be the biggest challenge/ hurdle in planning a wedding?

theweddingplanneronline.com

Rebekah: Everyone was so excited for our marriage and wedding planning, which was great; however, with that comes many varying opinions about how things should be done. It is important to listen to others’ advice, but ultimately we, as the bride and groom, made the final decisions. TWP: What is the single most important piece of advice you have for other brides and grooms planning their weddings? Rebekah: Accept that not everything will meet your expectations. Learn to just roll with it, make the most of every moment, and keep your eyes on the big picture. It’s your wedding! Don’t let the small details ruin your big day.

Getting Hitched Without A Hitch theweddingplanneronline.com

Pros Of Hiring A Wedding Planner Though love may not cost a thing, weddings certainly do. One of the best ways to maximize wedding budgets and ensure that money is well spent is to enlist the services of a wedding planner. “When looking for a wedding planner, couples should look for someone to take the stress out of their big day,” advises Whitney Lohr, business owner of Emerald and Whitney LLC, a wedding coordinating and professional event planning service based in Lancaster. As part of their role, wedding planners wear many hats, which underscores how valuable they can be.

An experienced wedding planner can help couples keep their worries at bay. Countless decisions must be made when planning a wedding, and some couples may feel as if they need to micromanage their nuptials. A wedding planner can take tasks off couples' plates and serve as a sounding board as couples try to make the best decisions. “We meet with the bride several times prior to the wedding to create a schedule for them and write any special details about their day to make sure it runs smoothly,” Lohr explains. Wedding planners may offer several levels of planning packages, allowing couples to select one that best fits their needs as they prepare

for their big day. “Every couple that books us gets access to our 25 Commonly Missed Details sheet as well as access to their own personal Google Drive sheet, which we use to create a schedule with them as well as list all their vendor contact information,” Lohr says. “We also offer to walk through the venue with the bride prior to the wedding to discuss how they would like us to decorate.”

Wedding planners step in to save the day when hiccups threaten to derail plans. A planner will know what to do should a gown become torn or if a vendor fails to respond to calls on the day of the wedding. “We are there to make sure any issues that happen day-of are brought to us instead of the bride, making all the stress fall on us,” shares Lohr. “We help the ceremony run smoothly and ensure the bride and her family don't have to run the cleanup at the end of the evening.” Removing some stressors allows couples to relax and more fully immerse themselves in their weddings.

The Wedding Planner

A wedding planner may help couples score insider deals and will know when a vendor's price is on target or inflated. That savvy can save couples money in the long run. Wedding planners can also advise on ways to save money and allocate funds so couples' biggest priorities get the financial attention they deserve. “We have worked with many vendors and love to give guidance to help brides stay within their budget but still get the quality they want,” Lohr says.

elements together. He or she likely has seen a vast array of celebrations and can make suggestions based on what has worked before. “Some brides choose to have a food truck unique to a style of food they enjoy, others use flowers they spend months making, and yet others have a special dance they choreograph to surprise their guests,” Lohr shares. “We ensure all these small details are carried out flawlessly, making their dream a reality.”

Time Saver

Wedding planners already have a bevy of industry contacts and can pull together wedding details in much less turnaround time than couples with no wedding planning experience. Additionally, wedding planners can save time on the day of the ceremony by spearheading setup and cleanup. “It is important to make sure your planner is there to help set up and doesn't leave until everything is cleaned up,” Lohr notes. “On the morning of the wedding, we check in with the bride and then proceed to decorate the ceremony and reception space, making sure to send pictures to the bride to keep her in the loop and make any necessary changes to the décor.”

Wedding planners are invaluable resources who wear multiple hats as they help couples plan the wedding of their dreams. But more than that, wedding planners are often passionate about making each couple’s experience the best it can be. “I love finishing a wedding and seeing the joy on the bride's face as she leaves. I love working with the families and seeing them celebrate this day they have waited so long for!” Lohr says. “It truly is a rewarding job!”

The Clerk of Orphans' Court and/or the Register of Wills within each individual county in Pennsylvania handles information, forms, and the actual registration of marriage license applications. Both individuals must appear in person together to complete and file the application for marriage. A Social Security number and a government-issued photo identification are required for both parties. The medical examination and blood test are no longer required. In Pennsylvania, if either party is under age 18, the consent of a parent or legal guardian is needed. Applicants who have been previously married must provide the following information concerning the dissolution of the most recent marriage: divorces - a certified copy of the decree is required (if maiden name has been resumed, that document must be presented); annulments - the same information as is required for divorces must be provided; and widowed - the date of death of the deceased spouse is needed. Blood relatives down to and including first cousins may not marry under Pennsylvania law. A marriage license becomes valid on the third day following application or the next business day if the third day falls on a weekend or holiday. The license is valid for 60 days from the third day following the date of application. The wedding ceremony need not be performed in the county in which the license was issued. However, an outof-state marriage license cannot be used in Pennsylvania, nor can a Pennsylvania marriage license be used in another state. Details, courthouse locations, and other information for separate counties in the area are listed below. All courthouse office hours listed are for Mondays through Fridays, unless otherwise noted. Details are available on each county’s government website or by calling the phone number for the Register of Wills/ Clerk of Orphans’ Court Office. Information may also be available in person Mondays through Fridays during regular business hours, at least one half-hour before closing time. Some offices have suspended in-person visits and appointments due to COVID-19; check each county’s government website to ensure that in-person visits are being accepted.

Creative Wedding Cakes That Make A Sweet Statement Brides and grooms may pore over every detail of their weddings, but few components of the festivities may be as fun, especially for foodies, as deciding what the wedding cake will look like. Couples that want to deliver show-stopping visuals often express some measure of their creativity and personalities through statement wedding cakes. Many couples now eschew the classic

three-tiered white cake in favor of a dessert that garners instant attention for other positive reasons. Whether the cake is brightly colored or hand-painted, a towering architectural marvel or shimmering in metallics, couples are opting to make a statement with their confections. Besides clever cake-toppers, here are ways to stand apart when dessert is served. Cover a white or naked cake with translucent glaze tinted in your wedding colors. This artistic expres-

sion, a rising trend according to the Perfect Wedding Guide, can be especially stunning in boho-chic weddings.

Statement tiers also are popular.

The cake may be traditional in nearly every way, but couples then set the cake apart by featuring an elaborate design or a different hue in one tier.

Use more than just color to make a statement. For example, lifelike
