GOTR Schedules Free Film About Impact Of Technology By Ann Mead Ash

The trailer for the film “LIKE - A Documentary About the Impact of Social Media on Our Lives and the Effects of Technology on the Brain ends with the

daunting question, “Are you using technology or is it using you? Girls on the Run (GOTR) of Lancaster-Lebanon hopes to start a conversation around that question when the organization presents the film on Friday, Jan. 31, at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster. The event is free to members of the public age 10 and up. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m., and the film will be shown at 7 p.m. Sarah Yohe, development director with GOTR, said that the subject of the film is especially pertinent. “We know that technology is a really relevant topic for our girls and our entire community, said Yohe. “This documentary really digs into the addiction See Free Film pg 5

Jessica Kinsey, a board member with GiGi’s Playhouse Lancaster, wants families with children who have Down syndrome and other disabilities to know that a support system is available. “I would have loved to have had this once we had our prenatal diagnosis, said Kinsey. “We want to educate (the community by providing) more information (for families). A huge step in raising awareness of the positive impact people with Down syndrome and other disabilities can have will take place on Saturday, Jan. 11, when GiGi’s Playhouse, a Down Syndrome Achievement Center, will open at 2503 Oregon Pike, Lancaster. An open house to celebrate the grand opening will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Although the open house is a drop-in event, Jen Voshell, who is also a board member, said that specific activities are

planned. Self-guided tours of the facility, which includes a large room, two small rooms, a kitchen, and a family room, will be available from 1 to 2 p.m. At 2 p.m., Nancy Gianni, who founded GiGi’s Playhouse in 2002 and named it for her daughter GiGi, will speak, as will GiGi’s Playhouse president Kim King. “Some of our families will talk about what GiGi’s Lancaster means to them, said Voshell. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held, and refreshments will be served. Gianni, who founded GiGi’s in Chicago, was inspired to start the program after holding a support group meeting for families of children with Down syndrome in a room made available in a local hospital. “She took it upon herself to create GiGi’s Playhouse, said Voshell. “She became well known and was able to help other communities open their own playhouses. GiGi’s Playhouse Lancaster is the 47th playhouse to open in the United States. GiGi’s Playhouse from pg 1 “GiGi’s differs because everything we offer is free to families,” said Kinsey, who listed therapeutic services, such as speech, physical, occupational, and social services among the playhouse’s offerings. “All family members are welcome and encouraged to stay,” she stated, adding, “It’s not therapy just for our individuals with Down syndrome, it’s (a model) for what you can do in-home.” Kinsey also noted that GiGi’s Playhouse is inclusive. “It’s not just for individuals with Down syndrome,” she said. Kinsey noted that support is available for individuals of all ages. “GiGi’s is a lifetime commitment to families. We help from prenatal diagnosis through adulthood,” she explained. “There will be fitness classes,” stated Kinsey. The center hopes to offer young adults and adults a program called GiGi University to provide career training or life skills. The classes encourage education, socialization, and ways to help individuals be more independent. Four types of classes are scheduled for the next several months at GiGi’s. “Classes will consist of LMNOP, which stands for Language, Music, and Our

Peeps,” said Voshell, who noted that the class, which is for children age 3 and under, will focus on developing language and social skills through play. Destination Discovery will be a class for people of all ages that focuses on social skills, physical skills, and school skills, such as colors. Fantastic Friends is a program for individuals age 18 and up. “It’s a time to hang out and build relationships,” said Voshell. GiGi Fit is a young adult exercise and healthy lifestyle class. Christine Hewitt said that GiGi’s grew out of a group called Celebrate Down Syndrome, which had been in existence in Lancaster for many years. The group decided to change the name to GiGi’s Playhouse in 2016. Since that time, the organization has been hosting galas, fundraisers, and gettogethers, such as Pancakes and Pajamas, which is held near the holidays, to raise funds to open the playhouse. More information about GiGi’s Playhouse may be found by visiting www.gigisplayhouse .org/lancaster or searching for “GiGi’s Playhouse Lancaster” on Facebook. Readers who have questions may call 717723-6861.

Christmas Tree Recycling Program Slated County residents can participate in an environmentally friendly way to dispose of their Christmas trees by dropping them at the mulching site at Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature’s Way, Lancaster, between dawn and dusk through Friday, Jan. 31. Trees must be free of decorations, lights, plastic bags, and hardware, including nails in the trunk. The park mulching program is for Christmas trees only. No other yard waste will be accepted. There is a three-tree limit per vehicle. Commercial haulers are strongly advised to contact their local municipalities for their respective Christmas tree recycling locations. There is a suggested nominal donation for each tree. Donations will benefit the operation of the Dr. John Moss Native Tree Nursery in Central Park. Trees from the nursery are utilized throughout the county park system. Moss, a former professor at Franklin & Marshall College and a founding member of the Lancaster Environmental Action Federation (LEAF), worked to promote the conservation of natural resources for the improvement of

the environment of Lancaster County’s public parks and open spaces. In 2000, LEAF donated funds to the Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation for the creation of the nursery in memory of Moss. According to park officials, residents drop off about 1,500 Christmas trees each year, which produce 22 tons of mulch. The mulch is ideal for acid-loving plants such as rhododendrons and azaleas, as well as many deciduous ornamental trees and shrubs that require slightly acidic soil conditions. The mulch will be available to residents on a firstcome, first-served basis after Tuesday, Jan. 7, near the tree drop-off site. Persons desiring free mulch should bring a pitchfork or shovel and a bag or a trailer to transport it home. For more information about the Christmas tree mulching program, residents may call the park office at 717-299-8215 on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. To learn more about the Lancaster County Park System, readers may visit www.lancaster countyparks.org.

songs that will include ensemble celebratory dances. “There’s a (number where) they enter the Temple of Chemosh, a god of the Moabites, with live percussion and extravagant dancing,” she said. As she deals with the challenges of bringing a big show to a smaller stage, Grayberg wants audiences to focus on the message of the show. “I hope audiences see this as a story of redemption and faithfulness and

see that God works things out for good,” she said. Grayberg also lauded the cast members, noting that the students feel honored and thankful to play the roles. “I hope (audience members) see the truthfulness of the actors,” she said. While Grayberg is excited about the production, being the first to stage the show outside Sight and Sound comes with challenges. “It feels like we are workshopping a brand-new show,” she said, noting that the stage at the Good Shepherd Chapel is somewhat smaller than the one at Sight and Sound. “We have to make the show attainable, so the text and staging can be tricky as far as conveying the story, but I think it will feel more intimate,” said Grayberg. “Theater is a vehicle for us to feel emotions and learn things and discover things within ourselves,” noted Grayberg. To be sure “Ruth” fills these roles for the audience, Grayberg is focusing on the heart of the tale. “This bond between these two women is beautiful,” she said. “We are stripping the story down and bringing out the human aspect,” she said. “Ruth was used by God to facilitate (His plan).” From a musical perspective, Grayberg noted there will be significant changes. “This is the first time a Sight and Sound show will be done with a live orchestra,” she said, noting that LBC’s Dr. Bruce Gerlach listened to a recording of the show and wrote the score for a 26-piece orchestra. Songs that Grayberg believes will stand out include “I Will Go Where You Go,” and “By My Side,” which are sung by Ruth and Naomi together. She also pointed to a solo by Boaz called “Taking Your Chances.” As a choreographer, Grayberg said that there will be several

berg to direct and choreograph, along with an all-female creative team that includes Leslie Talley and Gabrielle Hines as assistant directors, Kendra Bigley as music director, Katie Moser as set designer, and women overseeing costumes and props. “Ruth” will be staged on Fridays, Jan. 24 and 31, at 7 p.m.; on Saturdays, Jan. 25 and Feb. 1, at 2 and 7 p.m.; and on Sundays, Jan. 26 and Feb. 2, at 2 p.m. All shows will be held in the Good Shepherd Chapel at LBC, 901 Eden Road, Lancaster. Kristin Hurdleston and Delaney Bigley are double cast in the titular role, and Ruth’s mother-in-law, Naomi, is played by Samantha Ingram. The pair find themselves poor widows when Naomi’s husband, Elimelech, played by Richard Thomas, dies and her sons are killed. With only faith in God and each other, Naomi and Ruth set off on a journey that leads to a lesson about finding God’s plans when one’s own have failed. But “Ruth” is also a love story about the kinsman Boaz, played by Bryson Buffington, who rescues the women from their plight when he falls in love with the title character. Brianna Brady will serve as the narrator, an otherworldly being who will at one point interact with the characters.

One admits to having an unhealthy relationship with her phone, while another states that her parents say she is addicted to her phone. Evidence that technology usage affects the same parts of the brain that respond when a person falls in love is presented. “The documentary discusses how much of our time we spend connected to a device,” said Yohe, who noted that calls to action for audience members will be part of the discussion. “We would like them to walk away continuing the conversation,” said Yohe, who added that presenters will suggest that those who viewed the film work to limit screen time and pay attention to ways that they disconnect from technology. “We will give them tips on how to scale back technology usage, and we will ask them to start using technology for good (reasons and purposes),” said Yohe. Advice may include turning off notifications or changing a screen to grayscale. There is no charge to attend the event, but those who would like to see the film are asked to register by visiting www.eventbrite.com and searching for “LIKE” in Lancaster. Yohe noted that the face-to-face time is important in the current cultural environment. “We get our girls together twice a week for 10 weeks to make real live personal connections,” she said. The curriculum teaches life skills and strategies to help build confidence and character. A 2016 study found that a majority of the girls who completed the program learned to resolve conflict, help others, and manage emotions. To enhance the discussion, the screening will be followed by a panel discussion and the opportunity for the audience to ask questions. The panel will consist of a child psychologist, a Millersville University communications major, a technology expert, a local pediatrician, and a local school administrator. GOTR board members Katie Sandoe and Robin Sarrat will serve as moderators. The presentation will not end with the panel discussion, however. GOTR has partnered with the Lancaster County Community Foundation on the event, and May Renner of the foundation will close the evening with a visioning exercise. The film trailer features a

To enrich learning in Warwick schools above and beyond the school district’s budget, the Warwick Education Foundation (WEF) has awarded 12 grants worth $27,548 for the 2019-20 school term. The Raising Warwick fund drive was slated to end on Nov. 17. To determine how to place extra learning tools in the classroom for a highly focused impact, the foundation works alongside the teachers at all grade levels. Ten innovative education grants and two expert-in-residence grants were awarded this year. Four Warwick High School science teachers - Doug Balmer, Diana Griffiths, Ray Mount, and Beth Lynch - won a $2,933 grant to buy handheld devices that enable students to work outdoors using sensitive probes to collect data measuring the sun’s rays, atmosphere, and water quality. Three other science teachers Kimberly Sweigart, Emily Badaracco, and Cynthia Kensinger - are using their $2,290 grant to purchase test kits their students will use to analyze how lifestyle choices affect health. They will test foods for contamination, identify nutrients, prepare milk for cheesemaking, uncover bacteria in food processing, and determine the effects of pollutants on the body. Teams from all four elementary schools - led by first-grade teachers Stacey Bernstein, Crystal Harnick, Gwen Wenger, and Amy Henschel and second-grade teacher Nicole Miller - are using $2,090 to buy Raz Kids digital books and quizzes that allow students to boost language fluency by practicing their reading anytime, anywhere. Second-grade teachers at Kissel Hill - Yvonne Engroff, Dena Cascarino, and Elizabeth Smith - are putting $775 into an incentive program that encourages children to read books across six different genres and rewards them for each one. Thanks to a $800 grant won by Megan Cupo-Fisher and Meghan Young, Bonfield’s sixthgrade students will run the Alaskan Iditarod dogsled race by following an account told by

Warwick teachers shared 12 grants awarded by the Warwick Education Foundation. Recipients are (front, from left) Doug Balmer, Crystal Harnick, Lisa Gleason, Alina Rakiewicz, Amy Henschel, Gwen Wenger, Cynthia Kensinger, Will Maza, (middle) Kim Sweigart, Emily Badaracco, Heather Bellows, Amy Griffith, Megan Cupo-Fisher, Dan Shelly, Christie Cosmore, (back) Lee Walter, Colleen Heckman, Elizabeth Smith, Dena Cascarino, Yvonne Engroff, Stacey Bernstein, Meghan Young, David Houseknecht, Melissa Reifsnyder, Diana Griffiths, Ray Mount, Beth Lynch, Nicole Miller, Sue Oswald, Martin Meier, Kathy Steinour, and Austen Lambert. Newbery-winning author Gary Paulsen. They will calculate distance traveled, analyze weather conditions, and write a detailed report on their favorite musher. At Lititz Elementary, a team of fifth-grade teachers - Amy Griffith, Dan Shelly, and Sue Oswald - will use a $360 grant for a Nearpod interactive system to select or custom-design engaging lessons and tests, push them out to student laptops and iPads, and get immediate feedback. With Alina Rakiewicz and Martin Meier’s $1,400 grant, advanced broadcasting students at Warwick High School will learn how to design a broadcasting studio, and a tech student group will then construct the set. High school teacher Lisa Gleason won $1,400 to give students access to Newsela, an online platform of nonfiction articles in every subject. Students can read independently while controlling their own reading levels and measuring comprehension. Four teams from the four Warwick elementary schools, led by Colleen Heckman, Will Maza, Heather Bellows, and Kathy Steinour, were awarded a $10,000 grant for the annual One Book, One School, One Community family reading program. Each of the nearly 2,000 elementary school families is given a copy of the same novel along with a reading schedule and activities to perform. The program often concludes with a

visit and presentations by the book’s author. Middle-school teachers Lee Walter and Austen Lambert teamed up to garner a $600 grant in support of students designing projects for the annual Science Olympiad and competing in one of its 23 events. The money will go to pay entry fees and material costs. Warwick Middle School teacher Christie Cosmore was awarded a $2,500 grant to bring professional actors and a live performance of “My Heart in a Suitcase” to the seventh grade. Having learned about the Holocaust reading “The Diary of Anne Frank,” students watch the play to experience the reallife drama of Anne Fox, the 12year-old daughter of a Jewish family in Berlin facing growing persecution by the Nazis. The other expert-in-residence grant went to Lititz Elementary teachers David Houseknecht and Melissa Reifsnyder for a multimedia demonstration by artist Patrick Dunning of The Signature Project. More than 1 million signatures form his 36foot-by-76-foot mural, by people with stories of adventure, hope, courage. The grant covers a school day performance and would be raised to $4,800 if an evening community performance can be scheduled. FFA at MCHS, and all three boys participate in 4-H. The brothers wake up early every morning to feed and tend to their animals and return in the evening to make sure each animal has fresh water and food. Eric explained that exercising the animals is another important part of the routine to build muscle and to prepare for the main event. “That way they aren’t as anxious in the show,” noted Eric. In addition to being judged for livestock show class awards at the Farm Show, each contestant is judged on showmanship. Eric, Tyler, and Drew spend hours guiding the animals at home to ensure the animals are ready for the show ring. They practice in various environments and employ tactics like playing a radio so that the animals are not as overwhelmed by all the noise that will surround them 24/7 at the Farm Show. Each animal is washed before traveling to the Farm Show and again before entering the show ring. “Sheep take a lot of work,” noted Tracy. Each lamb will be sheared at home and at the Farm Show in addition to getting washed and blow-dried to make it look its best. “I’m very competitive, so I like the challenge of getting them ready,” said Eric. The hustle and bustle of the holiday season may be over for many, but for Manheim brothers Tyler, Eric, and Drew Zimmerman and hundreds of other people across the state, life is about to kick into full speed as they make final preparations for their part in the 2020 Pennsylvania Farm Show. The 104th annual Pennsylvania Farm Show is scheduled to take place from Saturday through Saturday, Jan. 4 to 11, at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex and Expo Center, 2300 N. Cameron St., Harrisburg. Admission is free; however, there is a parking fee in all Farm Show Complex-operated lots. Among the more than 6,000 animals that will be part of this year’s Farm Show are several lambs, pigs, and rabbits that have been raised and cared for by the Zimmerman brothers at the family’s farmette in rural Manheim. Tyler, 16, and Eric, 15 now in their sixth and fifth years, respectively, of participating in the statewide competition - will each be entering one lamb and one pig. Ten-year-old Drew will enter a lamb and a pig, along with three rabbits. Transporting all of those animals to the Farm Show Complex in time for their competitions will take three trips. “It’s going to be an all-nighter,” said the boys’ mother, Tracy Zimmerman, with a laugh. But that driving time, plus all of the unseen effort leading up to it, is more than worth it for Tracy and her husband, Ryan Zimmerman, who hope to develop and instill a lifelong hard work ethic in their sons through projects like this. “It teaches them responsibility,” noted Ryan. “And commitment and follow-through,” added Tracy. Ryan and Tracy met in FFA when they were attending Manheim Central High School (MCHS). Now Tyler and Eric are involved in

Eric Zimmerman (left) and Tyler Zimmerman will be showing sheep and pigs at this year’s Pennsylvania Farm Show. The brothers are both members of the Manheim Central High School FFA.
