Lititz recCenter Aims To Help Families Get Moving By Ann Mead Ash

During the fall, Simon Ababou, fitness director at the Lititz recCenter, 301 W. Maple St., Lititz, had an idea to motivate children and their parents to help each other work toward a better fitness level. Ababou introduced the idea to three rec center instructors. “They said, ‘Let’s do it,’” recalled Ababou. The result will be a new program, recFamilyFit, offered each Monday from 5:15 to 6 p.m. from Jan. 7 to Feb. 18. The class will be open to parents and grandparents and to children ages 5 to 12. The class will be designed to help reduce stress, and the program will offer weekly options for other rec center offerings. According to Ababou, instructors Kira Talbot, Elsbeth West, and Jamie

Hoffman will start the Monday class with relaxation, yoga, stretching, Pilates, and breathing techniques to help the children and parents release stress. After 15 minutes of stress reduction, the class will turn to physical activities like fitness games, which may include the use of small weights, hula hoops, and other equipment. “We want to get parents and children to work out together,” explained Ababou, who added that other optional activities will be included with the class. Among these will be a Zumba party night on the second Friday of each month from 6 to 7 p.m. and a Les Mills Virtual Sh’Bam class each Friday from 4:45 to 5:30 p.m. Children ages 7 to 12 who participate in recFamilyFit will also be eligible to take Boxing for Kids, which is held each Tuesday from 5:15 to 6 p.m. Participants will also receive See Lititz recCenter pg 2

Children ages 5 to 12 and their parents and grandparents are invited to take part in the recFamilyFit program offered each Monday from 5:15 to 6 p.m. from Jan. 7 to Feb. 18 at the Lititz recCenter. The program is aimed at helping families to relieve stress and develop a healthy lifestyle together.

Power Packs - Serving And Growing Pure Entertainment LBC To Stage “Bye Bye Birdie”

By Ann Mead Ash

Back in 2004, Joan Espenshade noticed the large number of children waiting for breakfast outside a Lancaster city school on a Monday morning. Recognizing that these children may not be receiving adequate nutrition over the weekend, she founded Power Packs Project to help meet the nutritional needs of those children between Friday and Monday over the school year. The project sought to educate families as well by providing a recipe using low-cost ingredients that they could learn to replicate. Today, Power Packs Project has grown to help feed 1,600 families weekly 32 weeks per year by distributing ingredients for one low-cost meal in most Lancaster County school districts, but Jennifer Thompson, who became executive director in May, has identified several challenges Power Packs faces See Power Packs pg 4

“What I love about ‘Bye Bye Birdie’ is that you can come to this show and just enjoy,” said Heather Grayberg, who will both direct and choreograph the Lancaster Bible College (LBC) winter presentation. “(‘Birdie’ is) super fun, kitschy, loud, bright, and silly in a lot of ways.” “Bye Bye Birdie” is a Tony Award-winning musical that first played on Broadway in 1960. LBC will stage the show in the Good Shepherd Chapel, 901 Eden Road, Lancaster, on Fridays, Jan. 18 and 25, at 7 p.m.; Saturdays, Jan. 19 and 26, at 2 and 7 p.m.; and Sunday, Jan. 20, at 2 p.m. “Birdie,” which has more than 30 members in the cast, is the story of

The library system credits the expansion of the Bookmobile service not only to the new Bookmobile, but also to a new partnership between the library system and The Shalom Project. The partnership resulted in the placement of Kaitlin Abrahams as a new intern for the Bookmobile. Abrahams grew up in Kansas and recently graduated from EMU with a degree in English and writing studies. The Shalom Project is a one-year

voluntary service experience for recent college graduates. Participants live together in a house in Lancaster city; serve the community through full-time, professional internships; and participate in seminars focused on Christian spiritual formation and personal growth. The program covers all of the participants’ living expenses, including housing, transportation, and food. At the end of the session, class members will receive goodie bags filled with coupons for program discounts. The class is an extension of the rec center’s mission, which includes motivating people of all ages to exercise and live a healthy lifestyle. According to the rec center, families that take part in physical activity and choose nutritious foods may reap benefits of better health and enjoying quality time together. Developing healthy habits can lead to weight loss, stress

reduction, better school performance, and disease prevention. Ababou acknowledged that the modern family’s busy lifestyle, use of technology, and stress exacerbated by current events can all work against development of healthy behaviors. Weather is also a factor. “Our goal is to keep them (active) during the winter when it’s hard to be outside in the cold,” said Ababou. “Children sometimes get bored, so they can come here to do things.” Those wishing to participate may register by calling the center at 717-626-5096, visiting www.lititzrec.com, or stopping by the front desk at the rec center.

Christmas Tree Recycling Set County residents can participate in an environmentally friendly way to dispose of their Christmas trees by dropping them at the mulching site at Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature’s Way, Lancaster, between dawn and dusk through Thursday, Jan. 31. Trees must be free of decorations, lights, plastic bags, and hardware, including

nails in the trunk. The park mulching program is for Christmas trees only. No other yard waste will be accepted. There is a three-tree limit per vehicle. Commercial haulers are strongly advised to contact their local municipalities for their respective Christmas tree recycling locations. There is a suggested nominal

donation for each tree. Donations will benefit the operation of the Dr. John Moss Native Tree Nursery in Central Park. Trees from the nursery are utilized throughout the county park system. Moss, a former professor at Franklin & Marshall College and a founding member of the Lancaster Environmental Action Federation

(LEAF), worked to promote the conservation of natural resources for the improvement of the environment of Lancaster County’s public parks and open spaces. According to park officials, residents drop off about 1,500 Christmas trees each year, which produce 22 tons of mulch. The mulch is ideal for

acid-loving plants such as rhododendrons and azaleas, as well as many deciduous ornamental trees and shrubs that require slightly acidic soil conditions. The mulch will be available to residents on a firstcome, first-served basis after Friday, Jan. 4, near the tree drop-off site. Persons desiring free mulch should bring a pitch-

fork or shovel and a bag or a trailer to transport it home. For more information about the Christmas tree mulching program, residents may call the park office at 717-299-8215 on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. To learn more about the Lancaster County Park System, readers may visit www.lancastercounty parks.org.

Power Packs from pg 1 going forward. Among these are the need for volunteers, the need to add food sourcing resources, and the ability to provide nutritious food that can be utilized by families from a variety of cultural backgrounds. Volunteers are needed both at the Power Packs warehouse, located on Walnut Street in Lancaster, and at the schools and other sites where food is distributed. “We need volunteer drivers to deliver food to schools, and we need volunteers at the schools for packing,” said Thompson, who noted that because of a rotating schedule, volunteers can serve as little as once a month. She added that certain volunteer positions can be physically demanding. Volunteers who work at the warehouse or drive vans should be agile and able to lift up to 40 pounds. At the school sites, packing the bags is not as physically demanding. Thompson said that she has special appreciation for the organization’s volunteer base. “We are trying to grow our

volunteer base and learn from the volunteers who have been with us for many years,” she stated. Finding food that is nutritious, rather than processed or high in sugars, is always a challenge for Power Packs, according to Thompson. “We would love to have more connections for food sourcing,” said Thompson, who noted that tortilla shells and fresh fruits and vegetables like broccoli, green peppers, bananas, grapes, and oranges are on her wish list. Thompson said that the organization is aware of the ethnic and cultural diversity of the population it serves and that steps are being taken to meet those specific needs. “We are learning about those families and what they eat,” she said. “We have to source foods that are different. We need rice, and we need foods that are kosher (or) if (a family doesn’t) eat meat, how do we (meet) their (nutritional) needs with foods they will eat? We want to make sure we send home food families will recognize and try to cook and eat.” In addition to working with school social workers to learn how to better educate and empower families, Power Packs has partnered with a team at Georgetown University for a research project focused on the importance of nutrition in early childhood development. “We are looking forward to having our program evaluated and really learning,” said Thompson. Thompson comes to the position with experience in both food service and directing nonprofit organizations. She oversaw St. Joseph’s Children’s Health Foundation and also worked at St. Joseph Medical Center in Towson, Md. During that time, she ran a catering service and sold gourmet soups. In 2010, she realized her dream of owning a café in Lancaster, a place she called “homey and comfortable” that was open for nearly five years. Power Packs’ signature fundraiser is a spring Stay-atHome Gala, which encourages families to stay home and donate the funds they would have used to attend an event. This year, the organization took part in the Extraordinary Give in November, ranking in the top 25 recipients by raising nearly $75,000. Power Packs welcomes both online and traditional donations year-round. Readers who would like to learn more about the program or sign up to volunteer may visit the organization’s redesigned website at www.powerpacks project.org.

esting to play (up) the relationship between her and (Albert’s) mother,” she said. While Grayberg’s directing vision calls for making the roles more realistic, her plans for the choreography of the show are to make it larger-than-life. Grayberg is also working to emphasize the musical selections. “It will be overdanced,” said Grayberg. “It’s going to be big.” According to Grayberg, the production will challenge student actors in a variety of ways. “The song ‘Put on a Happy Face’ will be explosive with dance,” said the director, who hopes to add some juggling into the number. “Honestly Sincere” will be another standout. “You can’t help but dance and move and groove to it,” said Grayberg, who added that songs from the 1995 film will be included. “They give the character of Rosie a little more dimension,” she said, adding that she hopes audience members will find themselves humming the tunes on the way out.

To keep the show moving continuously, the set will be a house that separates and turns around to create different geometric shapes. “It will complement the talent and let the talent be in the forefront,” said Grayberg. The set will allow for scene changes to remain fluid. “I hope to have no blackouts at all,” said Grayberg, who plans to choreograph set changes. “It will feel like a consistent piece of art.” Grayberg praised the cast members, most of whom are part of the school’s musical theater program. “Our students are now working professionally out in the community, and the caliber of our shows will get better because of that,” said Grayberg. “They are becoming true career professionals.” Tickets to the show may be purchased at www.lbc.edu/events. Tickets may also be purchased at the LBC box office in the Good Shepherd Chapel on weekdays between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Readers who have questions may call 717-560-8241.

fan club, accompanied by a “last kiss.” The song and subsequent pucker are to take place on “The Ed Sullivan Show.” Enter teenager Kim MacAfee, played by Brianna Brady, who wins the competition. “Birdie,” which is based loosely on Elvis Presley’s induction into the Army, is set in the late 1950s. “It’s between poodle skirts and the hippie movement,” said Grayberg. “We’re trying to get in the reality of it,” she added, stating that there is a challenge in humanizing the characters to encourage audience members to relate to them rather than making them overthe-top caricatures. “We want to personify the Elvis (character) as much as possible,” Grayberg said. Focusing on the tension between Rosie and Albert’s mother, Mae, played by Rachel Allen, Grayberg also hopes to showcase the role of the young Hispanic woman. “Rosie is extremely Americanized and a strong character. She is very much the progressive woman of that time period. It will be inter-

host a show titled “The Book of Matthew Project” by artist Daehong Kim for First Friday, Jan. 4, from 6 to 9 p.m. “The Book of Matthew Project” was conceived in June 2010 as a personal pledge to support a church ministry that was sending a group of young adults on a shortterm service mission to South Korea. Kim committed to handwriting each verse from the Gospel of Matthew on individual cards, accounting for 1,071 verses. Kim also invited people to participate by contributing verses, and these verses and others were collected and applied on five canvases. The purpose of writing each verse was

wonder, praise, and gratitude in response to a challenging time in his life. Kim is an American artist who was born in South Korea in the late 1970s. He took up studio art and music performance as a child. At age 7, he became fascinated with basic generative design in a computer programming class. He is an advocate of art as an agent for telling stories and as a medium of renewal. He considers art integral to the narrative of his personal pilgrimage in human portrait and faith. Attendees of the First Friday event will be able to meet the artist, read some of the handwritten verses, and enjoy snacks.

Animal advocates and environmentally conscious holiday shoppers can make the season brighter for family, friends, and co-workers by “adopting” real, living manatees in their honor from the Save the Manatee Club. The Adopt-A-Manatee program was started to raise more awareness of Florida’s imperiled marine mammals. For a donation, the Save the Manatee Club will send a personalized adoption packet, which includes an adoption certificate, a photo and the life history of a real Florida manatee, and a membership handbook. Manatees like Rocket, Howie, Ariel, and Gator are all popular adoptees, and a new female manatee, Moo Shoo, has been added to the Adopt-A-Manatee program at Blue Spring State Park in Orange City, Fla. Save the Manatee Club is an nonprofit conservation organization whose mission is to protect manatees and their aquatic habitat for future generations. Through increased public awareness, habitat protection, and enforcement of boating regulations, the organization hopes to ensure manatees survive for the enjoyment of generations to come. Manatee adoptions and a variety of manatee-related merchandise are available by visiting www.savethemanatee.org. To adopt a manatee, readers may also call 800-432-JOIN (5646).
