Scout Project Provides Picnic Tables For Library hanks to Adam Blankenmyer, a Boy Scout with Troop 154 and a junior at Warwick High School, the Lititz Public Library now has a few new picnic tables on the lawn where students can sit when being read to or doing crafts and other activities. Blankenmyer built the tables, with the help of other troop members and their families, to complete his Eagle Scout project. He presented them to the library at an outdoor event on Dec. 5. Terry Duffin, the Scoutmaster for Troop 154, which meets at the Lititz Church of the Brethren, suggested the project to Blankenmyer after passing the library in the fall of 2020. “I was looking for my Eagle Scout project idea, and I knew we had helped out the library before by moving books for the Friends of the Library book sale,” said Blankenmyer. When Duffin drove by the library, he saw staff members reading to children outside with all the students sitting in the grass. Duffin soon

thoughtful gesture on the part of Adam.” McCrory explained that the library had moved story time presentations outdoors to accommodate COVID-19 restrictions. “There has been increased patron activity on the library grounds,” said McCrory. “To recognize a need for seating, develop a plan to solve it, and offer his project to the library, I think Adam has exhibited exactly the kind of community-focused and others-centered attitude that is in great need.” Eagle Scout projects focus on developing skills in organization and leadership, while serving the community. Planning and communication skills are key to a Scout accomplishing this task. McCrory recognized Blankenmyer’s accomplishment in these areas. “I think it is a project of which Adam can be proud,” said McCrory. “ We are very pleased with the project and Adam’s thoughtfulness,” he added. “We have been discussing a greater focus on our outside area, and Adam’s tables are a great step in that direction.”

suggested to Blankenmyer that picnic tables might be appreciated. The project was up Blankenmyer’s alley. “I like to do hands-on stuff,” he said. Blankenmyer hunted online for a design for the tables, and he and his father purchased the wood and other materials and precut the pieces. On Nov. 14, Blankenmyer oversaw a group that gathered at his home to assemble the three picnic tables. Once the tables were complete, the group moved them to the library at 651 Kissel Hill Road, Lititz. Blankenmyer had raised the funds for the materials to construct the tables from Scout fundraisers he had participated in over the years. “I had money in my Scout account saved up to cover the project,” said Blankenmyer, who noted he still needs to complete some paperwork before he will receive his Eagle Scout award. Library director Ryan McCrory, who was present when the tables were given to the library, was pleased with the donation. “I think the tables are a wonderful addition to our outside area. Previous years’ Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfasts have attracted more than 700 community leaders who gathered in one place to honor King’s legacy through performances, community awards, and a keynote speech. This year, however, due to COVID-19 restrictions, when attendees gather, they will do so virtually. The 33rd annual event will be held Monday, Jan. 18, from 9 to 10 a.m. in a livestreamed format. The theme of this year’s breakfast, “Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community?” takes its name from King’s final book. The breakfast will feature Heather McGhee as the keynote speaker. McGhee is a senior fellow at Demos, a public policy
think tank devoted to creating a democracy and economy rooted in racial equity. She holds a bachelor’s degree in American studies from Yale University and a law degree from the University of California at Berkley School of Law. McGhee is a member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council on Civic Participation, and she serves on the board of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund and Indivisible. She is the author of “The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together,” which is slated to be published in February. The honorary event chair is Ron Ford, the first African American elected to Lancaster City Council and the first
African American elected president of the council. To date, he is the first and only African American elected as a Lancaster County commissioner. The breakfast, which is a fundraiser for the Crispus Attucks Community Center (CACC), will feature Danielle Woods of WGAL-TV as master of ceremonies. CACC has been a fixture in southeast Lancaster city since 1927. The center is known for its efforts to improve the quality of life for youths and families in Lancaster by providing services designed to promote community prosperity and physical and mental health. CACC is a program of Community Action Partnership, known as Lancaster County’s largest anti-poverty organization. Tickets for the event, which

The organization serves about 60 clients in the Warwick School District. Volunteer drivers handle the four delivery routes. Volunteers, especially those willing to cook, are needed. Lititz Meals on W heels dates back to 1973, when three local women - Polly Eshleman, Jane Rannels, and Arlene Shannon - approached Lititz COB about using the kitchen to feed 25 clients. “Less Snore, More Cuddle” Are you having trouble sleeping in 2021? If so, please... Take This Reader’s Quiz: 1. Do you snore at night, or sleep with someone who does? 2. Do you wake up with pain in your back or neck? 3. Do you share a bed with someone who wants a firmer or softer mattress than you? 4. Do you wish you could wake up more refreshed and full of energy? If you answered “Yes” twice or more, this story is for you.
Introducing “Less Snore, More Cuddle™” Sleep Systems The only sleep systems that provide a Cuddle Zone in the middle, while raising or lowering head or feet sections. This solves common health problems for couples who sleep together. Here are some of the healthy benefits:
The Snoring Solution Did you know that astronauts don’t snore in space? Snoring is made worse by gravity’s effect on the throat, which narrows the airway. For this reason, snoring can be cured by sleeping in zero gravity -- or on an adjustable Cuddle Zone sleep system to elevate you head.
Stop Compromising Your Sleep If you wish you half of the bed was firmer or softer, a Cuddle Zone system can help. With “His & Her” custom-fit technology, you get a firmness that’s just right for each of you, you keep the Cuddle Zone.
Back and Neck Pain, Gone Sleeping without pain requires body support and spinal alignment. Unlike “firm or soft” mattresses, Cuddle Zone systems support the spine and neck with 2 to 4 comfort layers.
More Energy, More Life Cuddle Zone systems help give you deep, restorative sleep. Your muscles repair and grow, and your brain flushes out toxins. You wake up refreshed and energized.
Budget Bed or Sleep System? Why visit a local store when you can shop online? Because we don’t sell budget beds. We offer sleep systems, combining mattress, adjustable base and pillow. Each fitted to your needs. You can even experience any sleep system in our Dream Room. No website does that.
And those “unbiased” mattress review websites? They’re often owned by huge, private equity firms. But we’re not a faceless company. We’re locally owned in Lancaster. When you shop here, you support the community.
Now Explore Your Options At Gardner’s Mattress & More, we’ve curated over 24 Cuddle Zone sleep systems for you to see in person, 7 days a week. Private appointments are available. Coping Kids & Teens is run by children’s services counselor Diane Kulas. The program has been around for 25 years, so hundreds, if not thousands, of youths have been helped by its individual and group support offerings. “Being in a group and knowing there’s another kid who went through this makes them feel like they’re not alone,” Kulas explained. During the pandemic, Kulas and her staff members have been focusing on offering individual sessions via Zoom and over the phone. They have been meeting with children and teenagers after school and during the evenings. To combat Zoom fatigue, the professionals have dropped off art materials and games for future sessions at clients’ homes. “The best way to get (young people) to talk is to engage them in something they enjoy,” Kulas remarked. The Family Support Series is a six-week program offered in fall, winter, and spring. Due to the pandemic, sessions are being held online. Families gather via Zoom, then break into age-specific groups. Children and teenagers receive peer support and counseling, while their adult caregivers learn how to help youths grieve. Dealing with loss and grief looks different in children and teenagers as compared to adults, Kulas reported.
members. Camp Chimaqua is a weekend overnight camp for youths ages 6 to 12. Each camper is assigned a trained volunteer who provides support throughout the experience. Camp was canceled in 2020, but Kulas said she hopes that it will be offered as a one-day event this year. “Camp is a lot of fun. We try to make it interactive,” Kulas said. “We help (campers) be kids again.” An intake appointment is required before participating in any of the Coping Kids &

Rich Motz (left) presents the overall winner award to Dennis (center) and Theresa Cross, whose holiday decorations triumphed in the Holiday House Decorating Contest.
The idea was to hold an event that focused on holiday spirit while maintaining social distancing. Area residents were invited to vote for their favorite houses. Organizers held a successful July Fourth House Decorating Contest in 2020 as well. Rather than specifying categories, the contest was designed for voters to choose one overall winner. Participants, who were required to purchase a yard sign to designate their home for voting, were asked to keep their displays family-friendly and festive.
Organizers encouraged creativity in colors, lights, music, and greenery. W hen the competition was over, organizer Rich Motz noted that the event was a success and that the winner was clear. With more than 250 votes out of a total of 1,032, the home of Dennis and Theresa Cross, located at 583 Crosswinds Drive, Lititz, prevailed. The winning display was up until Jan. 1. BY ANN MEAD ASH
When Michael Kurland graduated from the University of Tennessee, he headed to Jacksonville, Fla., with an idea. “I realized there was a large homeschool contingency down there,” said Kurland. “I started a homeschool PE (physical education) program.” In 2003, Kurland began teaching a curriculum he designed, attracting 400 students the first year, and eventually doubling the size of the program. Later, Kurland took the concept to a more urban setting in Maryland, where hundreds of students took part, some driving up to an hour for a class. A year ago, Kurland came to the Lancaster area where he took the position of youth sports and activities manager with the Manheim Township Recreation Department. His background came to the attention of his supervisor Matt Stopa, and the result is a homeschool gym class for Lancaster County students. Classes for any homeschooled children in the county were slated to begin on Jan. 4 at the Overlook Activity Center, 301 Golf Drive, Lancaster. The first session will end on Thursday, Jan. 28. Consecutive sessions will be offered beginning, Monday, Feb. 1; Monday, March 1; Monday, March 29; Monday, April 26; and Monday, May 24. Classes, which last an hour, are broken into five age

groups. The kindergarten class is coed, but first and second grades, third through fifth grades, sixth through eighth grades, and ninth through 12th grades are divided by gender. Kurland noted that each monthly session is focused on a particular activity or sport. “We start out with the basic concepts and skills, and we build on those throughout the month,” said Kurland. “By the end of the month, we’re into the games ... whether it is softball or swimming or basketball.” Kurland also introduces students to games they may not be familiar with, such as gaga ball, as well as international games. A segment is devoted to the activities that were once part of the Presidential Fitness Test, which include a mile run, a shuttle run, and the V-sit reach. To promote social growth, Kurland has designed the curriculum to include teamwork and building individual self-esteem.
“Parents receive progress reports after each session,” said Kurland, adding that the course makes it easy for students who are at middle and high school levels to show they have obtained all their physical education credits. Kurland, who holds a degree in sports management, will be the sole teacher during the first year. Because of COVID-19 restrictions, classes will be limited to 10 students to provide for social distancing. In the future, class sizes may range up to 20 students. Other safety measures will include taking temperatures, wearing masks and gloves, handwashing, and sanitizing class areas between classes. There is a fee to take part in each session. If a homeschool co-op group wants to keep certain students together, Kurland is open to creating a class for that group. He also said the

Race Director from pg 5 aware that the year would bring challenges, Cuthie took on the role. To overcome those challenges, Cuthie has been meeting with the GSV infection prevention specialist to discuss how problems would be mitigated in certain areas. A variety of changes will be implemented, including packet pickup with little or no contact; a “to-go” style dinner the night before the race; a wave start, which sends racers out at intervals, on race day; and a finisher’s zone Cuthie is calling “Accomplishment Alley,” where pickup of medals and food will be streamlined. All awards will be mailed. A virtual option will be offered for those who choose that method of completing the run. As it has in the past, the race will begin and end on the GSV campus, following the same route that was instituted in 2019, when the race went from being a full marathon and a half marathon to a half marathon and a 10K. “On campus, we will follow whatever the state
Department of Health guidelines are at the time (of the race),” said Cuthie, who noted that everyone at GSV must wear a mask, including runners who may remove their masks at the start and put them back on at the finish. Cuthie is hopeful that this year’s event will be held live. “Even if it’s pared down, we can still offer it, assuming there are no restrictions on large events,” said Cuthie, who noted organizers plan to make a final decision before Monday, March 1. “We hope to do (the best) we can for the runners, but we’re a retirement community, so we have more to think about than having a race,” she added. Cuthie, a resident of Mount Gretna, is well-known in New Holland as the originator of the Hometown Heroes banner program and for her work with Visions. Readers who would like more information about the GSV race may visit https://gsv.run. Individuals with questions may call 717-355-6000.

Lititz Kiwanis Club Adds New Event BY ANN MEAD ASH
Known for its Chocolate Walk, members of the Kiwanis Club of Lititz Area decided to get a little creative with a fundraiser for the new year. In 2020, the Chocolate Walk, which is traditionally held the Saturday prior to Columbus Day, was streamlined to become a Chocolate Express, a one-stop,
drive-through to pick up sweet treats. For 2021, club members have devised a flavorful event that is designed to be safe. A Wine, Cheese, and Chocolate Tasting Party will be held via Zoom on Thursday, Jan. 28, with a choice to attend a 4, 5:30, or 7 p.m. event. Each Zoom engagement will include commentary about pairings. Those wishing to attend will pick up their party bag at a See Chocolate pg 7

pair mulled the idea over, waiting until the Chocolate Express was completed in the fall before getting to work. Proceeds from the local Kiwanis Club’s events traditionally benefit various local organizations, with special attention to those that support children. Davis noted that Lancaster Cleft Palate Clinic and Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, both of which serve children with medical and developmental needs, are particularly in need of funds. “They will receive proceeds (from the tasting party),” said Davis. Other organizations that have received checks from past fundraisers include Lititz Public Library, Manheim Township Public Library, and Manheim Township High School Key Club and Mini-THON. Tickets for the event may be purchased at www.lititz chocolatewalk.com. Readers who have questions may call 717-575-5967.
T-Mobile has upgraded the 4G LTE network in Lancaster to add capacity, extend coverage and improve the overall network performance for wireless customers. In addition, the launch of 5G in the market in 2019 means that a majority of the RRTA routes have 5G coverage, helping to provide even faster data speeds. The community is invited to create Valentine’s Day cards that will be distrubuted to nursing homes, hospitals, VFWs and other veterans’ organizations by Blue Ridge Communications.
Blue Ridge Communications recently launched its eighth annual Touch A Heart initiative designed to get personal, handmade Valentine’s Day cards into the hands of those who might not otherwise receive one - particularly nursing home residents, veterans and servicemen and women. Blue Ridge is once again encouraging everyone, young and old, to make handmade cards with their own personal touch, a special message and their name. Last year’s initiative brought in over 9,000 handmade cards throughout the Blue Ridge service area that were distributed to more than 50 organizations, including nursing homes, hospitals, VFWs and other veterans’ organizations. For more information about the initiative, readers may visit www.brctv.com/ heart21. Individuals and
organizations can send their cards to Blue Ridge Communications, Attn. Cindy Mellinger, P.O. Box 150, Ephrata, PA 17522-0150. Those with questions may also contact Mellinger at 717-733-6006, ext. 2551. The deadline to return handmade valentines to Blue Ridge is Wednesday, Feb. 3, to allow time to distribute them.

specified location in Lititz, or it can be delivered to the individual’s home within a 15-mile radius of downtown Lititz for an extra cost. Each party bag will contain three small bottles of wine – one from Australia, one from Italy, and one from California. Along with the wine will be tastes of cheeses and chocolate truffles. Club members sampled the items that were chosen to be included in the bag. “Someone has to do it,” noted Karen Davis, one of the organizers of the event. Davis shared that commentary on the pairings will be based on extensive research of information from the winemakers of the three varieties that will be included in the bag. “I got the idea (for this event) from watching a video from a Kiwanis Club in California,” explained Davis, who shared the concept with another club member. East Hempfield Township Police Department (PD) has participated in the Bleed Blue Challenge since the initiative’s inception. “We want to support Penn Medicine LG Health in its quest to get donations, especially in a pandemic year,” explained Lt. Jen Brubaker. “The blood stays local. It’s a way to give back to the community.” The Bleed Blue Challenge is a program of the Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health (LG Health) Blood Donor Center and is running from Jan. 4 to Friday, Jan. 29. During the initiative, participating police departments are encouraging members of their staffs and their communities to give blood at LG Health blood drives and at the center, 2104 Harrisburg Pike, Suite
202, Lancaster. Blood donor recruiter Anita Blizzard introduced the Bleed Blue Challenge with four PDs two years ago. It has grown to include 15 PDs this year: Manheim Township, East Hempfield, East Lampeter, Columbia Borough, Millersville Borough, Millersville University, Lancaster City, Lititz Borough, West Hempfield, Northwest Regional, Mount Joy Borough, Pequea Township, Quarryville Borough, Strasburg Borough, and Pennsylvania State Police, Troop J. A total of 80 units were received during the challenge in 2020, with Millersville University PD receiving credit and a plaque for the most donors. LG Health aims to keep 200 units in stock at all times, Blizzard noted. “What they did last year was really
good. With more police stations involved, you’d assume that you’d do even better (this year),” she said. Brubaker and other police officers planned to donate blood during the Bleed Blue Blood Drive on National Law Enforcement Day, Jan. 7. “Our first responders and police are great leaders in caring for our community. This effort is one more contribution they are willing to make,” said LG Health director of laboratory operations Brian Stambaugh. To participate in the Bleed Blue Challenge, individuals may make an appointment by visiting http://lancaster generalhealth.org/lgh/ our-services/blood-bank/ about-us/blood-drives.aspx or by calling 717-544-0170, option 1. Donors must be age 16 or older, weigh at least 110 pounds, be in good health,
have no history of hepatitis, and not have received tattoos or body piercings within the last three months. Individuals should be well hydrated and have eaten a substantial amount within four hours before donating. Those who have had COVID-19 may donate if it has been at least 28 days since diagnosis and they have no symptoms. Blizzard noted that COVID-19 is not spread through blood, but the donor center wants to reduce risk of infecting staff members and other donors. All potential donors will receive a thermal screening and be asked a series of questions. Everyone must wear a mask. Masks will be provided for those who do not have them. Readers who have questions or concerns may call the blood donor center at 717-544-0170, option 2.
