laine Spangler has been sewing since she was a teenager, but she only dabbled in quilting. When she first moved to Lancaster County in 1992, she looked for a quilting group to join, but she waited until her children left home to get involved. In 2010, she joined the Red Rose Quilters Guild. The Red Rose Quilters Guild currently meets virtually on the second Tuesday of each month beginning at 6:30 p.m. with a time to visit with members. A business meeting is held and a speaker gives a presentation. According to Spangler, the virtual format has enhanced the choice of speakers. “(Virtual meetings have) really expanded our reach as far as variety of speakers,” she said. “We had one speaker from Norway.” Spangler reported that workshops based on a speaker’s

monthly to make and distribute special quilts to servicemen and women. The history of the organization, which currently boasts about 150 members, dates back to 1983, when it was founded by Donna Lucidi, who served as its first president. The mission of the guild has always been to promote the many forms of quilting by presenting an active program of education and study. The group is open to both men and women, and Spangler noted there are usually a few men in the membership. During November and December 2021, the guild was spotlighted in the Quilt Shop at Miller’s, 2811 Lincoln Highway East, Ronks, where guild quilts raised funds to make more comfort quilts to donate. More information about the group may be found at http://bit.ly/rrqg-lanc.

Around 2000, Trent Davis, founder and CEO of Servants Inc., took a mission trip to Guatemala. The trip changed the direction of his life. “(Trent) felt a call to continue relationships and give others opportunity to have that experience,” said Keith Cotton, director of outreach with Servants. Cotton noted that Davis coordinated mission trips and worked with missionaries in Guatemala under a program he called SARF (Serving At Risk Families), which also included home repair and construction work. Fast forward to 2005, when Hurricane Katrina inspired Davis to do home repair work stateside. “(Trent) responded with the same base of volunteers, and that’s how the disaster recovery branch started,” said Cotton, who noted that flooding in York County in 2010 really brought home the idea of working locally. “There are

parents of today’s children are likely to seek support for a child’s mental health needs. In addition, teachers and guidance counselors are available to children attending school. In Pennsylvania, young people age 14 and older may make their own mental health decisions. McDevitt noted that teenagers may contact MHALC directly to be con-

nected to resources. Because the northeast portion of the U.S. has higher access to care, the prevalence of mental illness is lower, according to McDevitt. However, it still takes most people who experience issues more than a decade to seek help. MHALC supports and resources, including an online screening program, are available. “Younger generations are more apt to accept, support, and encourage loved ones to get help (for mental health issues),” said Kim McDevitt, executive director of Mental Health America of Lancaster County (MHALC). “That’s a culture shift,” added McDevitt, who noted that data shows people are being educated about mental health. “That is the only way we will reduce the stigma,” she concluded. McDevitt noted that breaking through the stigma should result in a changed view of overall wellness. “We will be looking at mental health the same way we look at physical health because they’re intertwined,” she shared. “If you aren’t mentally well, you will not be physically well (and vice versa).” Noting that variables

associated with COVID-19 have propelled attitudes toward mental health forward, McDevitt pointed to specific areas where struggles have been clear, including with children and in workplaces. “I think if there’s ever a time to address good mental health support in the workplace, it’s now,” noted McDevitt. “Supervisors need to understand that depression alters the person.” McDevitt added that while job expectations are necessary, flexibility is essential to help maintain employee mental wellness. “Someone who is struggling will be less productive, tardy, not meet deadlines, or be absent. The more (employees are supported) and connected to care, the more they want to give back, and the faster they will want to heal.” According to McDevitt, data is also showing that

Lancaster And York YMCAs Merge along with the York and Lancaster YMCA president/CEO. The task force conducted due diligence in the areas of property/risk/insurance, program and membership, governance, human resources, and finance, and it developed a formal plan of merger, which was approved by both boards and members. Members at both YMCAs will automatically become members of the new association in the same category as they were before the merger. There will be no significant changes to each YMCA’s programming or facilities, but both associations are adjusting their pricing models to establish consistency in the new association. Certain operations will be streamlined, such as timing of programs and online communications so that the merged YMCA can more efficiently serve residents in both counties. The YMCA of the Roses will keep its staffing structure largely the same. Larry M. Richardson, who has been the

president/CEO of the YMCA of York and York County for over 27 years and the acting president/CEO of the Lancaster Family YMCA since September 2020, will serve as the merged YMCA’s president/CEO. In each county, a director of operations will oversee the day-to-day activities of the branch. A single corporate office will manage both counties. The YMCA of the Roses will conduct centralized fundraising activities, but ensure that past, present, and future restricted funds are used for their intended purpose and align with the donor’s intent. The volunteer leadership for both associations will have an opportunity to continue serving with the new organization in some capacity. The YMCA of the Roses’ board of directors will be made up of volunteer leadership from both counties as will the various other committees related to overall operations of the merged YMCA. Local committees will ensure that each area’s operations are appropriate and relevant for their respective communities. Direct service volunteers,

The Lancaster Family YMCA and the YMCA of York and York County merged into a single YMCA association the YMCA of the Roses effective Dec. 1. The merger is intended to ensure the region has access to high-quality YMCA programming and allow the YMCAs in York and Lancaster to be more efficient stewards of the areas’ resources. On Sept. 1, 2020, the Lancaster Family YMCA and the YMCA of York and York County entered into a management agreement so that the York organization could provide CEO and human resource services to the Lancaster organization. Since then, the two associations have deepened their partnership by sharing staff, services, and programs. Both YMCAs’ leadership voted to move forward with a merger process, establishing a Merger Task Force, including representatives from each YMCA and the Pennsylvania State Alliance of YMCAs,

From York, the leap to Lancaster County was natural. Davis now works out of The Candy Factory building in downtown Lancaster several

days a week. According to Cotton, the executive team had a vision of expanding into a number of counties, with Lancaster being the first. “Right now we are in York, Lancaster, and Adams,” explained Cotton, adding that Lebanon, Dauphin, and Cumberland are in line to get offices next. tions Servants Inc. made was with CrossNet Ministries in New Holland. “In 2021, we completed five projects in New Holland with CrossNet,” said Cotton. Meredith Dahl, executive director at CrossNet, said the organization is grateful to partner with Servants Inc. “Recently, a handicappedaccessible porch was placed on the home of a family in our community,” she said. “The family shared with us … that they observed what it means to show love and care every time they interacted with the (Servants) staff. We are grateful for this partnership and opportunity to meet needs and show God’s love in ELANCO.” “Servants is unique because a lot of ministries do the camp model,” said Cotton. “We are a year-round model,” he noted, adding a full-time project manager was scheduled to begin working for the ministry in Lancaster County in January 2021, with Thursdays and Saturdays slated to be the primary workdays. Cotton noted that the organization is looking for local volun-

teers. Skills like roofing, plumbing, and carpentry are bonuses but not required. “ We put an emphasis on building relationships,” Cotton explained. “You don’t have to be a professional carpenter to sit down and have a conversation. Anybody can serve.” Servants Inc. is already serving in most Lancaster County School districts where its services would not be duplicated. The organization is actively at work in Columbia as well as New Holland, and representatives attended the Together Initiative Network (TIN) meeting at Pequea Valley Intermediate School on Nov. 17, 2021, for the purpose of introducing the organization to the local community. Servants Inc., still sends recovery teams to areas of the U.S. hit by disasters. On Jan. 2 and 9, Heartland Recovery trips left to help those areas recently devastated by tornadoes. Readers may learn more about the organization by visiting www.servants.org or calling 717-378-0336.

Capital Blue Cross has been named one of the Best Places to Work in Pennsylvania for the fourth consecutive year, placing 23rd among large companies. According to Capital Blue Cross president and CEO Todd Shamash, the designation is awarded based on employees’ evaluations of the company. Most Capital Blue Cross employees began working remotely in March 2020 to best ensure their safety and well-being, while a small number of staff continued to work on-site to provide critical support services. As the COVID-19 pandemic evolved, Capital Blue Cross did, too, reinventing the way its employees work. Many now have full-time remote working status, while some have hybrid inoffice/at-home schedules, and a smaller number work full time on-site. The Best Places to Work
