Amazing Accomplishment - MS Patient Completes Ironman Rec Center To Offer MS Challenge Training BY ANN MEAD ASH
tephen Glaus, who began offering individual 12-week training sessions in the MS Fitness Challenge at the Lititz recCenter in January, is living proof that the program, which utilizes focused exercise and nutrition, can have positive results. In 2018, Stephen experienced significant mobility impairment and blurred and double vision from multiple sclerosis (MS), an autoimmune disease that causes nerve damage and interferes with communication from the brain to the body. In the fall of 2020, he completed a virtual Ironman swimming 2.4 miles, cycling 112 miles from Reading to Marietta, and running 26.2 miles. Stephen’s journey with MS began in July 2018. At the age of 27, the Elizabethtown native was working in his dream job as a drone salesman in California. “On a business trip to Japan, my left foot went completely numb,” he recalled. Three weeks later,
S
Stephen had lost the ability to walk unaided, and he was dealing with other complications. Realizing his life would change dramatically, Stephen left his job in California, and he and his wife, Nikki, returned to Elizabethtown. Characterizing himself as “stubborn,” Stephen refused to accept the doctor’s predictions that he would be using a wheelchair in two years. Instead, he began researching resources and came across the book “David’s Goliath” by David Lyons, which outlines the MS Fitness Challenge. Stephen connected with Lyons, who founded the MS Fitness Challenge organization, and Lyons began coaching Stephen. He also made dietary recommendations. As the two men became acquainted, Lyons felt that Stephen would be an asset to the organization. “I jumped aboard,” said Stephen who began studying for his personal trainer license, which he received from the National Federation of Personal Trainers in March of 2019.
Stephen Glaus (left photo), an MS patient, earned his Ironman medal through a virtual event in the fall of 2020. Glaus swam at Blue Marsh in Reading (right photo), biked from Reading to Marietta, and then ran 26 miles on the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail.

Building For Proverbs 31 Book Reaches Out To Women Author Pens Bible Study During Shutdown The Future Hernandez-Tuten wanted to BY ANN MEAD ASH
As Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS) prepares to start construction on a new STEM Innovation Center, Phase 1A of the largest remodel effort in the school’s more than 90year history, school president Tim Hamer is looking forward to equipping the building to match the curriculum. “The once-in-a-lifetime rebuilding was informed by what we need to do to teach what we want to teach,” said Hamer. See Remodel pg 2
In Proverbs 31, the writer describes a woman of noble character. To many women studying the text, the characteristics of this woman may seem daunting. “A lot of women who read Proverbs 31 … walk away with a list of things to do,” said Lancaster County resident Mari Hernandez-Tuten, author of “Proverbs 31 in 5 Minutes a Day Bible Study,” which was released in early September.
give women a different perspective on the virtues of the Proverbs 31 woman. “This woman (in Proverbs 31) is doing all these things, but I don’t think it’s just a day in her life. I think these are seasons throughout her life,” noted Hernandez-Tuten. “You see her being productive, and you see her trusting God in the midst of all sorts of situations.”

in 1974, will be Phase 1B, with construction scheduled for the summer of 2022. “We will be using the space that is now the cafeteria, which has no floor over it,” said Hamer. “We will build the auditorium there because we can go up and stay within the footprint of the school.” Hamer noted that a triangular courtyard that exists where the three wings of the school join together will be filled in and connected to the school library. “That is where the cafeteria and Student Commons will be moved so we can make room for the auditorium.” Through its Cherish - Love Honor campaign, LCHS has raised nearly $9 million of the initial $12 million needed for the renovations. Hamer emphasized that no funds will be borrowed for the project. “This (plan) is far less expensive than the alternatives, and it allows for a better flow and use of space,” he said, noting that the present building represents eras of construction that were decades apart. “This is a way to meld them together. It’s very exciting.” To learn more about the building campaign, readers may visit www.cherish lovehonor.com.

The STEM Innovation Center, which will replace the third floor of Riley Hall, is slated to be under construction before students leave school in May. “Less Snore, More Cuddle” Are you having trouble sleeping in 2021? If so, please... Take This Reader’s Quiz: 1. Do you snore at night, or sleep with someone who does? 2. Do you wake up with pain in your back or neck? 3. Do you share a bed with someone who wants a firmer or softer mattress than you? 4. Do you wish you could wake up more refreshed and full of energy? If you answered “Yes” twice or more, this story is for you.
Introducing “Less Snore, More Cuddle™” Sleep Systems The only sleep systems that provide a Cuddle Zone in the middle, while raising or lowering head or feet sections. This solves common health problems for couples who sleep together. Here are some of the healthy benefits:
The Snoring Solution Did you know that astronauts don’t snore in space? Snoring is made worse by gravity’s effect on the throat, which narrows the airway. For this reason, snoring can be cured by sleeping in zero gravity -- or on an adjustable Cuddle Zone sleep system to elevate you head.
Stop Compromising Your Sleep If you wish you half of the bed was firmer or softer, a Cuddle Zone system can help. With “His & Her” custom-fit technology, you get a firmness that’s just right for each of you, you keep the Cuddle Zone.
Back and Neck Pain, Gone Sleeping without pain requires body support and spinal alignment. Unlike “firm or soft” mattresses, Cuddle Zone systems support the spine and neck with 2 to 4 comfort layers.
More Energy, More Life Cuddle Zone systems help give you deep, restorative sleep. Your muscles repair and grow, and your brain flushes out toxins. You wake up refreshed and energized.
Budget Bed or Sleep System? Why visit a local store when you can shop online? Because we don’t sell budget beds. We offer sleep systems, combining mattress, adjustable base and pillow. Each fitted to your needs. You can even experience any sleep system in our Dream Room. No website does that.
And those “unbiased” mattress review websites? They’re often owned by huge, private equity firms. But we’re not a faceless company. We’re locally owned in Lancaster. When you shop here, you support the community.
Now Explore Your Options At Gardner’s Mattress & More, we’ve curated over 24 Cuddle Zone sleep systems for you to see in person, 7 days a week. Private appointments are available. One goal of the book was to show women that they can make significant contributions. “This whole theme of having influence as women no matter where we are is ... a theme I want to share with other women,” said Hernandez-Tuten. With that focus in mind, Hernandez-Tuten pictured her reader as serious but busy. “I think of this Bible study as something for women who have been doing devotionals and want to go a little deeper but aren’t ready to sit down for one or two hours,” said Hernandez-Tuten, who worked with her editor to offer readers studies that can be done in a short amount of time. The study is set up to be completed in seven weeks when the reader finishes a segment each day. Hernandez-Tuten noted that the study offers variety. “Some days are short devotions with a question and sometimes an activity,” she said. There is an “Act” section that encourages the reader to “put into action what (she) just learned.” The study can be done individually or in groups. With more than 20 years of experience in ministry, Hernandez-Tuten had considered writing a book later on in her life. When she was contacted by a publisher at the end of 2019, she decided to accept the opportunity as a gift from God. Her feelings about the opportunity did not change, but her circumstances soon did. “I had signed a contract and was moving forward when COVID hit,” Hernandez-Tuten recalled. “I was not expecting to be writing during a pandemic with (all my family) in my house.” Calling the experience “the opposite of anything I had ever imagined,” HernandezTuten set about writing with three school-age sons attending school virtually and her husband teaching school virtually. “The concentration part was really hard,” she remembered. Eventually, she asked her husband to take the boys on a brief camping trip so she could have the solitude she needed to meet her deadlines, and she completed the book in about four months. About a month after the book was published, Hernandez-Tuten’s father died. To honor her father’s legacy,

Thanks to Adam Blankenmyer, a Boy Scout with Troop 154 and a junior at Warwick High School, the Lititz Public Library now has a few new picnic tables on the lawn where students can sit when being read to or doing crafts and other activities. Blankenmyer built the tables, with the help of other troop members and their families, to complete his Eagle Scout project. He presented them to the library at an outdoor event on Dec. 5. Terry Duffin, the Scoutmaster for Troop 154, which meets at the Lititz Church of the Brethren, suggested the project to Blankenmyer after passing the library in the fall of 2020. “I was looking for my Eagle Scout project idea, and I knew we had helped out the library before by moving books for the Friends of the Library book sale,” said Blankenmyer. When Duffin drove by the library, he saw staff members reading to children outside with all the students sitting in the grass. Duffin
soon suggested to Blankenmyer that picnic tables might be appreciated. The project was up Blankenmyer’s alley. “I like to do hands-on stuff,” he said. Blankenmyer hunted online for a design for the tables, and he and his father purchased the wood and other materials and pre-cut the pieces. On Nov. 14, Blankenmyer oversaw a group that gathered at his home to assemble the three picnic tables. Once the tables were complete, the group moved them to the library at 651 Kissel Hill Road, Lititz. Blankenmyer had raised the funds for the materials to construct the tables from Scout fundraisers he had participated in over the years. “I had money in my Scout account saved up to cover the project,” said Blankenmyer, who noted he still needs to complete some paperwork before he will receive his Eagle Scout award. Library director Ryan McCrory, who was present when the tables were given to the library, was pleased
with the donation. “I think the tables are a wonderful addition to our outside area. It was such a thoughtful gesture on the part of Adam.” M c C r o r y explained that the library had moved story time presentations outdoors Lititz Public Library director Ryan to accommo- McCrory (left) and Boy Scout Adam date COVID-19 Blankenmyer stand with the tables r e s t r i c t i o n s . Making An Impact BY ANN MEAD ASH
Steve Schedler, who officially became executive director of the Samaritan Counseling Center on Sept. 8, is impressed with the staff he has joined. “One of the amazing things about Samaritan Center is our amazing team,” he said, noting that many of the dedicated staff members have been there for more than a decade and at least one for 25 years. “It’s great to be part of something that people have put a lot of passion and energy into for many years.” Schedler, who served the Naaman Center in Elizabethtown for 10 years, lastly as executive director, applied for the position last spring. “I had a great experience with the search committee, and when I was offered the position, I enthusiastically accepted,” said Schedler. Schedler, who lives in Hershey with his family, is no stranger to Lancaster County. He noted that in his work with the Naaman Center, he often drove to that center’s various locations. A Central Pennsylvania native, he attended Penn State
University for his bachelor’s degree in psychology and earned his Master of Social Work at Temple University. Schedler holds certifications in advanced alcohol and drug counseling and a Certificate of Competency in Problem Gambling through the Pennsylvania Certification Board. He is involved with the Elizabethtown Area Communities That Care and GOAL Project. While working at the Naaman Center, Schedler helped lead the effort to join that organization with Pennsylvania Adult and Teen Challenge. Schedler had heard about the reputation of the Samaritan Center and its positive effect on the community before considering joining the team. “The impact Samaritan has in this region is significant,” he said. “I was aware of the good work they have been doing for many years.” The Samaritan Counseling Center, 1803 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, began in 1987 with a mission to foster hope and healing through professional counseling, consultation, and education. The organization subsidizes fees for individuals, families, and children in need and provides quality programming on mental health issues. “It’s important to understand that

Samaritan does more than just counseling,” said Schedler, who noted that the organization provides consulting services, as well as TeenHope, a mental health screening program that assesses depression and suicide risk of students in Lancaster County middle and high schools. When applying, Schedler felt the multifaceted center might be a good fit for him. “Something that attracted me to the organization is that they were having impact in multiple ways,” he said. “We want to continue to look for ways to creatively impact the community positively. We’re excited that we can be involved in these different areas of community life.” More information about the services the Samaritan Center offers may be found at http://scclanc.org.

Ironman from pg 1 Stephen’s health slowly improved, and he began thinking about doing a full Ironman triathlon. He met a former Navy SEAL, with whom he shared his Ironman dream. “I didn’t know how to swim, so once a week he got in the pool with me and taught me to swim,” said Stephen. Soon a three-mile swim was no problem. Weeks before Stephen was to complete his full Ironman, he learned that COVID-19 restrictions had forced organizers to cancel. “MS is a time bomb,” said Stephen. “You never know when the next relapse will come.” Uncomfortable with waiting for the 2021 event, Stephen found a virtual platform that allowed him to realize his goal with help from his longdistance swimming coach, Louise Hyder-Darlington, and his father, who drove along on the bicycle route and biked beside his son during the run. Glaus now works with individuals one-on-one to implement the MS Fitness Challenge. “If someone has lower leg weakness, we have the participant hold each contraction for six seconds,” explained Glaus. “You are giving the brain the opportunity to develop a new pathway to do the same movement.” He also works with clients on nutrition, which he noted is essential to succesfully living with MS. Dozens of Lancaster snow removal businesses have partnered with Lawn Love to offer a contactless, on-demand snow removal service that can be scheduled quickly and conveniently. Lancaster homeowners can now order snow removal instantly through the Lawn Love platform, using their smartphone or computer. Quotes are generated in less than two minutes using satellite imaging technology. Once the customer accepts the price, a local snow removal provider is assigned to the property. Lawn Love aims to provide a service that will have a positive impact on the lives of Lancaster homeowners and snow removal operators. By using digital technology to make the quoting and payment process contactless, customers and operators can remain socially distanced. Lawn Love’s snow removal providers are all local operators with more than one season of experience. The platform aims to offer Lancaster providers a steady stream of new customers and business management tools. In addition to one-time services, users can schedule snow removal for the entire winter, without needing to sign a contract. The company’s weather mapping software is designed to ensure that providers never miss a snow day. Lawn Love broke into the on-demand services scene in 2014. The company offers a wide range of yard services, including lawn mowing, aeration, weeding, gutter clearing, leaf removal and snow removal. For more details, readers may call 717-696-6677 or visit www.lawnlove.com/ pennsylvania/lancaster-lawn -care.
