Bernie (left) and Beth Bostwick of Ambassador Advisors and Masterpiece Marketing, respectively, hold the Friends of Evangelical Seminary Servant Leader Corporate Partner Awards they received at the end of 2020.
Local Couple Honored By Seminary BY ANN MEAD ASH
“As a couple, we love sharing the gifts and talents the Lord has given both of us with others, especially the nonprofits we cherish,” said Beth Bostwick, speaking for herself and her husband, Bernie, about the recent Friends of Evangelical Seminary Servant Leader Corporate Partner Awards the couple received at the end of 2020. “We are humbled by this award,” continued Beth.
“(We) feel that there are so many business partners and collaborators who are worthy of this as well.” In a normal year, the Bostwicks would have received their award when Evangelical Seminary, located in Myerstown, held its fall banquet, but 2020 was not a normal year. When the banquet was canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions, representatives of Evangelical Seminary traveled to the offices of the couple’s businesses, Masterpiece

Marketing and Ambassador Advisors in Lancaster, to present the award. Beth was introduced to Evangelical Seminary more than a decade ago by then seminary president Michael Sigmund. Since then, Beth and her team at Masterpiece Marketing have worked with school leaders, including current president Tony Blair, on rebranding, developing a new logo, and designing the annual report, among other projects.
“I truly believe that my greatest joy in life, and my greatest responsibility, is to be the best wife and mom I can be,” said Annie Friedrichs, a member of the Change of Pace (COP) leadership team. COP is a seasonal Bible study program sponsored by Friendship Foundation, Inc. “COP has given us a great opportunity to come together and open God’s Word to gain the wisdom and understanding He offers,” continued Friedrichs.

Steve Schedler, who officially became executive director of the Samaritan Counseling Center on Sept. 8, is impressed with the staff he has joined. “One of the amazing things about Samaritan Center is our amazing team,” he said, noting that many of the dedicated staff members have been there for more than a decade and at least one for 25 years. “It’s great to be part of something that people have put a lot of passion and energy into for many years.” Schedler, who served the Naaman Center in Elizabethtown for 10 years, lastly as executive director, applied for the position last spring. “I had a great experience with the search committee, and when I was offered the position, I enthusiastically accepted,” said Schedler. Schedler, who lives in Hershey with his family, is no stranger to Lancaster County. He noted that in his work with the Naaman Center, he often drove to that center’s various locations. A central Pennsylvania native, he attended Penn State University for his bachelor’s degree in psychology and earned his Master of Social Work
at Temple University. Schedler holds certifications in advanced alcohol and drug counseling and a Certificate of Competency in Problem Gambling through the Pennsylvania Certification Board. He is involved with the Elizabethtown Area Communities That Care and GOAL Project. While working at the Naaman Center, Schedler helped lead the effort to join that organization with Pennsylvania Adult and Teen Challenge.

“I have had the pleasure of collaborating with Evangelical Seminary’s leadership to shape inspirational marketing tactics that meet their organizational goals and motivate supporters, said Beth, who added that she values the school’s focus on training students to effectively serve, care, train, and mentor. “Their goal is to create leaders who will be conduits of change and boldly preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ, she said. Ambassador Advisors, a Christian financial planning entity, has aided the board of Evangelical Seminary in managing the school’s
endowment since 2013. “I’ve experienced firsthand, from leadership and staff, the dedication and love for the mission of the seminary,â€? said Bernie, president of Ambassador Advisors, who added that the firm has also been involved in planned giving and the school’s efforts to create a museum. “It has ‌ sparked a desire to join others who give their time, talent, and treasures to advance the mission of the seminary.â€? Bernie recalled that he began a relationship with Jesus Christ while serving his country in the Air Force. Recognizing the importance of sharing Christ with those in

Ruhl’s Church Will Offer Free Soup BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Ruhl’s Church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim, wants to spread love while warming hearts and stomachs. The church will hold a free soup drive-through on Saturday, Jan. 30, from 10 a.m. until noon or until the soup runs out. This is the first time the church will be holding an event featuring free soup but not the first time the church has offered a drivethrough format. The organizers were inspired by a free takeout ham dinner offered during the church’s drive-through Nativity in December, said organizer Kris Gray. “The free ham dinner was so well received that we wanted to offer another free food event to share the love of Jesus with our community, Gray noted. “Homemade soup is a great comfort food and perfect for warming up during these cold days. The event will feature chicken corn noodle soup.

Bernie also noted the significance of the school’s work to bring the community into conversation through its Faith in the Marketplace breakfast series, which was held regularly prior to COVID-19 restrictions. The program features speakers who discuss “how to let your light shine for Christ in a secular business. “It’s a very meaningful way to connect, noted Bernie. Beth summed up her reaction to the honor by noting that her relationship with the seminary has been mutually beneficial. “Working with a client like Evangelical Seminary (that) sees challenges or barriers as an opportunity rather than a threat inspires our team of marketing consultants, she said. “Our team has been blessed through this positive attitude. Readers who would like to learn more about seminary may visit https://evangelical.edu/ about/about-evangelical.

Stephen Glaus (left photo), an MS patient, earned his Ironman medal through a virtual event in the fall of 2020. Glaus swam at Blue Marsh in Reading (right photo), biked from Reading to Marietta, and then ran 26 miles on the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail. Instead, he began researching resources and came across the book “David’s Goliath” by David Lyons, which outlines the MS Fitness Challenge. Stephen connected with Lyons, who founded the MS Fitness Challenge organization, and Lyons began coaching Stephen. He also made dietary recommendations. As the two men became acquainted, Lyons felt that Stephen would be an asset to the organization. “I jumped aboard,” said Stephen who began studying for his personal trainer license, which he received from the National Federation of Personal Trainers in March of 2019. Stephen’s health slowly improved, and he began thinking about doing a full Ironman triathlon. He met a former Navy SEAL, with whom he shared his Ironman dream. “I didn’t know
how to swim, so once a week he got in the pool with me and taught me to swim,” said Stephen. Soon a 3-mile swim was no problem. Weeks before Stephen was to complete his full Ironman, he learned that COVID-19 restrictions had forced organizers to cancel. “MS is a time bomb,” said Stephen. “You never know when the next relapse will come.” Uncomfortable with waiting for the 2021 event, Stephen found a virtual platform that allowed him to realize his goal with help from his longdistance swimming coach, Louise Hyder-Darlington, and his father, who drove along on the bicycle route and biked beside his son during the run. Glaus now works with individuals one-on-one to implement the MS Fitness Challenge. “If someone has lower leg weakness, we have

the participant hold each contraction for six seconds,” explained Glaus. “You are giving the brain the opportunity to develop a new pathway to do the same movement.” He also works with clients on nutrition, which he noted is essential to succesfully living with MS. Stephen Glaus, who began offering individual 12-week training sessions in the MS Fitness Challenge at the Lititz recCenter in January, is living proof that the program, which utilizes focused exercise and nutrition, can have positive results. In 2018, Stephen experienced significant mobility impairment and blurred and double vision from multiple sclerosis (MS), an autoimmune disease that causes nerve damage and interferes with communication from the brain to the body. In the fall of 2020, he completed a virtual Ironman - swimming 2.4 miles, cycling 112 miles from Reading to Marietta, and running 26.2 miles. Stephen’s journey with MS began in July 2018. At the age of 27, the Elizabethtown native was working in his dream job as a drone salesman in California. “On a business trip to Japan, my left foot went completely numb,” he recalled. Three weeks later, Stephen had lost the ability to walk unaided, and he was dealing with other complications. Realizing his life would change dramatically, Stephen left his job in California, and he and his wife, Nikki, returned to Elizabethtown. Characterizing himself as “stubborn,” Stephen refused to accept the doctor’s predictions that he would be using a wheelchair in two years.

FREE Health & Wellness Classes in February & March Chronic Disease SelfManagement: Beginning February 10, 2021 a 6-week program that is done over the telephone with a small group of Lancaster County residents age 50+ who are living with a chronic disease. The program is structured to help participants better manage their ongoing health conditions such as arthritis, diabetes, high blood pressure, anxiety, and heart disease. Weekly topics include finding better ways of dealing with pain and fatigue, easy exercises to help improve or maintain strength and energy, learning the appropriate use of medications and improving nutrition. Must Pre-register by calling 717-299-7924. Walk with Ease: March 1 – April 9, 2021 a 6-week program that meets inperson 3 times per week. Sessions will be offered at the Lancaster Rec Center Tuesday, Thursday, and Fridays 11am12pm and at GEARS in Elizabethtown Monday, Thursday, and Fridays 1:30pm2:30pm. This program is for Lancaster County residents age 60+ who are living with diabetes, heart disease and other chronic conditions. The central activity of the program is walking but each session includes information tailored to those living with arthritis.
Connell notes that the Sermon on the Mount includes the Beatitudes, the Lord’s Prayer, and a discussion of religious devotion, ambition, and relationships. “It seems rather timely to be studying about being a peacemaker, being salt and light in a dark world and also our relationships with others,” said Connell. Connell added that rather than dividing the sermon, the author has set up the study so that participants will consider the whole sermon to see how they should navigate the world we live in. “The Art of Parenting” is a video-based study designed to help parents find new ways to integrate faith into everyday moments and to celebrate healthy breakthroughs in the parenting journey. The study will be facilitated by Dr. John and Debbie Tornfelt, who bring
40 years of parenting and ministry to the conversation. Recent events have caused families to experience unprecedented isolation and cultural challenges that have made many parents wary of the future. Considering the subject matter of the study, COP Central facilitators Deb and Keith Garner referenced verses in Deuteronomy and Proverbs that apply to raising children, noting, “We have an obligation as parents and grandparents to teach our children the ways of the Lord.” They referred to the study as one that will help equip parents and grandparents to help children navigate the cultural waters. LMHS Student Named Questbridge Scholar Manheim Resident Will Attend Brown University BY ANN MEAD ASH
Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS) senior Eden Addisu had been receiving emails from Questbridge, a nonprofit scholarship program for exceptional students from low-income backgrounds, for quite some time; however, she had not seriously considered applying to the organization. But during the COVID-19 quarantine, Addisu had more time than she might have had school been meeting on campus. “I thought, ‘Why not?’” said Addisu. The application process for
the Questbridge College Match program has been called rigorous. Addisu noted that the application includes four essays rather than just one and that the deadline in September of 2020 of each year is earlier than most programs require. She completed her application for submission in early September 2020, and she learned on Oct. 20 that she was a finalist. More paperwork was required by Nov. 1, and on Dec. 1, she received the news that she was a scholarship recipient and had been matched with Brown University, her first choice for college. Addisu was elated. The Questbridge scholarship covers tuition, room and board, meals, books, and
school supplies. Addisu will take part in a work study program during the school year, and she will be responsible for a summer contribution as part of the program. Addisu’s parents came from Ethiopia to the U.S. two years before she was born. Addisu attended Kraybill Mennonite School in Mount Joy, and then came to LMHS as a freshman. She has been active in the International Students Association. Academically, Addisu has taken a number of Advanced Placement classes in subjects such as biology, chemistry, government and politics, world history, and U.S. history. These accomplishments strengthened her application.
Outside school, Addisu enjoys working with children, and she teaches Sunday school at two area churches – the Ethiopian Evangelical church in Landisville and Worship Center in Leola. She has hopes of eventually becoming a pediatrician. Addisu chose Brown University because of the school’s offerings in her chosen area of study. “(Brown is) great for pre-med,” she said, noting that the school also provides an open curriculum, which she favors. “There are no general education requirements,” she said. “That will give me time to explore other things I am interested in.”
Eden Addisu, a Manheim resident and senior at Lancaster Mennonite High School, will attend Brown University on a Questbridge scholarship in the fall.

Samaritan from pg 1 Schedler had heard about the reputation of the Samaritan Center and its positive effect on the community before considering joining the team. “The impact Samaritan has in this region is significant,” he said. “I was aware of the good work they have been doing for many years.” The Samaritan Counseling Center, 1803 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, began in 1987 with a mission to foster hope and healing through professional counseling, consultation, and
education. The organization subsidizes fees for individuals, families, and children in need and provides quality programming on mental health issues. “It’s important to understand that Samaritan does more than just counseling,” said Schedler, who noted that the organization provides consulting services, as well as TeenHope, a mental health screening program that assesses depression and suicide risk of students in Lancaster County middle and
high schools. When applying, Schedler felt the multifaceted center might be a good fit for him. “Something that attracted me to the organization is that they were having impact in multiple ways,” he said. “We want to continue to look for ways to creatively impact the community positively. We’re excited that we can be involved in these different areas of community life.” More information about the services the Samaritan Center offers may be found at http://scclanc.org.

Giant Giving Program To Benefit Local Schools To help address food insecurity among students, The Giant Company recently introduced a new customer giving initiative to assist local public schools in the communities it serves. This initiative, aimed at addressing the issue of childhood hunger, enables school districts to use the funds to best serve their community and can be used to support meal programs such as covering outstanding student meal debt, expanding food distribution programs and building on-campus food
pantries. Now through Sunday, Feb. 28, customers at Giant, Martin’s and Giant Heirloom Market stores will be invited to round up their grocery purchase to the nearest dollar to donate to their local public schools’ food programs. The Giant Company will match the first $1 million donated by customers through the round-up program. Additionally, customers will be able to convert their Choice points into a donation. For every 100 points
converted into Grocery Dollars via the Giant or Martin’s app, $1 will be donated to the initiative, and customers will still be able to use the grocery dollars for their own savings on their grocery bill. The Giant Company will match every Choice point converted up to an additional $500,000 donated through this new initiative. Funds will be distributed to schools in March. Lancaster resident Nate Luvice is only 22 years old, but he is already concerned about the legacy he will leave. “I want to be sure that I leave my mark in this community,” said Luvice. “When people talk about me, they will say that (I) made a change.” Luvice is a full-time mentor and student services coordinator with Bench Mark, a program located on East Liberty Street in Lancaster city that focuses on giving opportunities to under-served youths through weightlifting. Luvice’s history with the program began seven years ago when he heard Bench Mark founder Will Kiefer speak at Phoenix Academy. Luvice noted that he specifically remembered Kiefer saying he wanted “to give back.” “That sounded strange to me,” said Luvice. “(In my experience), it (was) not usual for someone to want to help you with nothing in return.” Luvice and Kiefer began meeting for coffee. Luvice recalled that he had no identification. “(Kiefer) helped me get my driving permit and all my identification,” Luvice
stated. While Luvice appreciated the help, he was not ready to fully commit to a new perspective. “I was scared of change,” Luvice admitted. “When you’re uncomfortable, you’re growing.” Luvice noted that during that time period, he was in and out of jail, but Kiefer never gave up on him. In 2016, Luvice made a decision. “I was shot in the stomach, and I lost four liters of blood,” said Luvice, who still carries a bullet in his lower spine. “I knew it was time to change.” Early one morning while still in the hospital, Luvice reached out to Kiefer. “I said, ‘I really need your help. Now it’s time,’” recalled Luvice. Kiefer, who was on a mission trip to Honduras, wrote back that he would visit Luvice upon his return. “I thought he wouldn’t come. I thought I blew it,” said Luvice, “but sure enough he came to my house when I was recovering.” Since then, Luvice has turned to Kiefer without reservation. “He has been a father figure and mentor,” said Luvice, who noted the hardest part of adjusting was letting go of friends who were not supportive of the changes he was making for
