Fire And Ice For Everyone n 2021, to keep visitors and residents safe, Lititz canceled its Fire & Ice Festival and instead held the Lititz Ice Walk, which extended the event from a single weekend to several days and focused especially on the ice sculptures lining the streets. For 2022, the town will host what executive director of Venture Lititz Rebecca Branle calls a hybrid event. “A lot of people enjoyed taking their time (to view the ice sculptures) and coming back a few times (in 2021),” she said. This year, the Fire & Ice Festival will officially run from Friday, Feb. 18, to Monday, Feb. 28, and encompass a number of activities, including a ticketed preview party, a Kids Funderland, a sweet treats punch card, and a scavenger hunt. The launch party, called Winter’s Coolest Night Out, will be held on Thursday, Feb. 17, at 6 p.m. at Collusion Tap Works, 5 Juniper Lane, Lititz. It will include a live ice carving outside The Lititz Shirt Factory building where the Tap Works is located. “It will be a really fun,

The Nittany Lion will make a return appearance. “There will be something really beautiful in front of Lititz Mutual (on North Broad Street),” noted Branle. See Fire And Ice pg 3

In October of 2021, Risa Paskoff, executive director of Aaron’s Acres, was informed that the Manheim Community Pool, where Aaron’s Acres has held its summer camp, would not reopen in the spring. “In 30 days, we researched about 30 community pools,” said Paskoff. “Our team was amazing. FBI Returns Stolen Guns To Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum

David Blackburn (left) and Jennifer Hall Royer display guns that were returned to the Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum by the FBI.

It is highly unusual for feature writers to take photos of people wearing masks and holding guns, but that is exactly what happened following the Dec. 17, 2021, return of two pistols that had been stolen from the Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum, 2451 Kissel Hill Road, Lancaster, in December of 1969. Museum curator Jennifer Hall Royer first learned that the guns had been recovered when she was contacted by the FBI about three years ago. The two Civil War-era firearms were returned to Royer and site administrator David Blackburn two months ago following a press conference at the Museum of the American Revolution in Philadelphia. The guns were recovered after the thief, Gavin Thomas of Montgomery County, sold a number of See Landis Valley Museum pg 4

own in the northern part of the county. On Paskoff’s wish list is housing for therapy alpacas, along with sheep, goats, and chickens. A property with space to grow herbs, vegetables, and flowers would give the organization the opportunity to expand the Aaron’s Acres Plus program, which began offering activities for 22- to 30-yearolds in early 2019. Among the activities planned for adult clients are farming, working with the animals, and taking part in Aaron’s Acres Acts of

Kindness Program (Triple AOK), which allows participants with developmental disabilities to give back to others. Paskoff also hopes Aaron’s Acres can open a café to be manned by participants. “We are hoping to kick off a capital campaign in 2022,” said Paskoff, who noted the organization is looking for an existing building to renovate to meet its needs. More information about Aaron’s Acres may be found at www.aarons acres.org.

For more than 20 years, Aaron’s Acres has provided socialization and recreation for children and young adults with special needs ages 5 to 21. The nonprofit organization held camp at the Jewish Community Center in Lancaster until 2013. Starting in 2014, the program was hosted by the Manheim Community Pool and Memorial Park. In 2019, more than 200 took part in camp. During 2020, Aaron’s Acres held virtual camp for 50 campers. In 2021, in-person camp was held, and the organization served 30 campers per two-week session. In 2022, camps will be held on weekdays from Monday, June 20, to Friday, July 1; Monday, July 11, to Friday, July 22; and Monday, July 25, to Friday, Aug. 5. guns was a famous rifle made by master gunsmith John Christian Oerte. Kinzle believed the rifle was a replica when he purchased it, but after doing some research, he realized he had a gun that had been stolen from Valley Forge Historical Society in 1970. He quickly contacted the FBI. “Because that rifle was rare and valuable, the dealer recognized it from a database,” said Blackburn. Thomas was tried in federal court in Philadelphia. Due to his age and ill health, he received a one-day sentence and a fine. After Thomas was sentenced, Landis Valley received word that the FBI was ready to repatriate the objects back to the institutions from which they were stolen. The Philadelphia FBI Art Crimes Unit displayed the guns at the Museum of the American Revolution, where the famous rifle made by Oerte will now be housed, and members of the FBI recovery team spoke of how they were able to return the guns. “Our hope is to display them here in the visitor’s center,” reported Royer, who is looking forward to opening a new exhibit in March called “Pennsylvania Germans Their Lives Through Color,” which will explore how color is used in the household and decorative arts. “As a museum run by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, (we see the guns as an) important part of our collective story,” said Blackburn. “They are part of our regional history, and we are proud to be in possession of them once again.” More information about the museum may be found at www.landisvalleymuseum.org.

Royer said that the guns were stolen from the museum’s gun shop and that there were no photographs of them. “They were identified as missing by the gunsmith at that time. He made drawings of them, and that’s all we had,” Royer said, noting that security at the museum has been strengthened considerably in the last 50 years. Both pistols are percussion cap guns. One is an Army model, which dates to 1860. It was purchased in 1914 in New York City for $1.50 by Henry Landis, one of the brothers who founded the museum. It is 14 1/2 inches long. The second gun is a 13 1/2 inch- long Navy model, which dates to 1851. According to Blackburn, Thomas kept the guns until he was nearly 80 and in failing health. In need of funds, Thomas offered several of the stolen pieces to Kinzle. Among the

Breen is from Muskegon, Mich., where he was raised by a family that included a number of hunters and trappers, who introduced him to their love of outdoor adventures when he was quite young. Raised in a Christian home, Breen sought to connect his faith with his work in a significant way. He has served as editor of God’s Great Outdoors Internet Outdoor Magazine, and
