For 2020, the Lititz Fire & Ice festival will include more than 50 ice sculptures and a special pyrotechnic show held two nights of the event. But Holly DeKarske, executive director of Venture Lititz, which organizes the show along with the Lititz Lions Club, is most excited about the ice sculpture that will be located in front of the Lititz police station. “The police department is doing a breast cancer awareness ribbon,” said DeKarske. “They have a pink patch they (will be selling) to raise money for cancer research, and (one of the cloth patches) will be embedded in the ice sculpture.”

This year’s Lititz Fire & Ice will run from Friday, Feb. 14, to Monday, Feb. 17, throughout downtown Lititz. Specific activities will be held on Feb. 14 from 5 to 9 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 15, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Portions of Main and Broad streets will be closed from 3:30 p.m. on Feb. 14 until 10 p.m. on Feb. 15. The ice sculptures will be spread around town, with interactive sculptures near the Lititz Post Office and the entrance to Lititz Springs Park. The ice sculptures will remain in place for visitors to see through Tuesday, Feb. 18, depending on weather. On Feb. 14, activities will kick off at 5 p.m. with the traditional Friday night block party. The American Heart Association (AHA), a nonprofit organization focused on heart and brain health for all, together with its signature movement, Go Red for Women, encourages men and women to wear red on Friday, Feb. 7, in honor of National Wear Red Day. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and many groups across the country observe National Wear Red Day each year on the first Friday in February to raise awareness about heart disease as the leading cause of death among Americans, especially women. The AHA notes that heart disease and stroke symptoms can present differently in women as compared to men. The Go Red for Women movement is nationally sponsored by CVS Health and supported locally by companies throughout central Pennsylvania. CVS Health will offer no-cost heart health screenings at MinuteClinic locations nationwide on select Thursdays in February. To learn more, readers may visit https://cvshealth .com/social-responsibility/our -giving/go-red-for-women. Readers may make a donation to support the cause at www.wearredday.org. Additionally, apparel, including the Red Dress Pin, is for sale at www.shopheart.org.

Pageant from pg 1 may choose the categories in which they wish to participate. “There will be a photogenic category, and participants may perform a talent if they like,” said Kim, who added that a runway modeling category will include formal wear, fun fashion, swimwear, and sleepwear. Kim’s daughter, Phoebe, who has Down syndrome, has competed in Cinderella pageants, contests that bill themselves as natural pageants featuring real children, since she was a baby. “She just loved it,” said Kim, whose older daughter competes in the Cinderella pageants as well. At the age of 8, Phoebe has reached a point where it is difficult for her to compete against others her age in the interview and talent categories. Last year, Kim entered Phoebe in the York County Stars pageant for children with special needs. Although Phoebe enjoyed taking part, Kim had a vision for a pageant that would offer something different. “I thought it would be great to have something where children and adults could just get on stage and do their thing,” she said. Lancaster Down Syndrome Advocates has existed since 2014. The organization is parent-run with a five-member board. “We don’t work directly with families,” said Kim. “We work in the community with other groups.” In the past, the group worked with Excentia to create a first responder training program, which can be used with police, fire departments, and EMTs. “We can bring the training into their facility,” explained Kim. “That was one of our first big endeavors.”

The group also worked with The Arc of Lancaster County. “We try to work with organizations that already exist to (enhance) what they do,” explained Kim. “Our goal is to increase advocacy in the communities.” Kim added that she and another board member have spoken to education majors at area colleges to help future teachers understand the mindset of the parent/advocate. Kim, who has experience coordinating Cinderella pageants, hopes members of the public will come to the event. “A big part of (the emphasis in staging the pageant) is that everybody has a gift to give,” she said. “Come and see children and adults on stage and see them dance, smile. I want to promote the gifts of people with disabilities,” she said. “There will be no winners or losers. Just come see how they shine.” There is no cost to take part in the pageant, but Kim would appreciate individuals registering by Sunday, Feb. 9, through the organization’s web page at www.lancasterdsa.org. More information may also be found by searching for “Lancaster Down Syndrome Advocates” on Facebook. The pageant is a fundraiser. Admission for audience members will be by donation, and food items will be available for purchase. There will also be vendor booths and other activities. Funds raised by the event will be donated to organizations and opportunities such as Challenger Little League Baseball, Challenger Football/Cheer, and a scholarship for Aaron’s Acres Summer Camp.

SPORTS Lady Warriors Cap Regular Season With 6-2 Run

4 - MERCHANDISER - Warwick Edition - February 5, 2020

Columbia • Conestoga Valley • Donegal • Elizabethtown • Garden Spot • Hempfield • Lampeter-Strasburg Manheim Central • Manheim Township • Penn Manor • Pequea Valley • Solanco • Warwick

by Vaughn Brown

While Ephrata already clinched the Section Two crown last week in girls’ basketball, Warwick (7-6, 11-9) ended their slate of games on a clean sweep with victories over Conestoga Valley, 38-29, Wyomissing, 47-37, and Lebanon, 42-36. With the victories, which capped a 6-2 run over their previous eight games, Warwick worked into sole possession of second place in the section, eclipsing Elizabethtown (6-6, 13-8) which lost to Hempfield on Thursday.

Heading into this week, with both teams vying for entrance into the L-L League championships, Warwick was only able to watch for Ephrata to beat the Bears in their final league game which was held on Tuesday, to avoid having to go to criteria to determine which team would advance. The Warriors concluded their league play in Friday’s contest with Lebanon. Lauren Pyle spearheaded the Warrior’s attack last week as the junior accounted for 59 of the 127 total points the ladies scored in their three games. Against Conestoga

Valley, she racked up 26 and nailed seven three pointers, which at the time was the most any player had scored in a single game this season. With only six points scored between the two teams in the first quarter, Warwick went on to out point the Buckskins 36-25 over the remainder of the game as they slowly pulled away from a 12-12 tie at the half. The next closest scorers to Pyle were Conestoga Valley’s Savannah Byers and Laela Robinson who each bucketed seven points to lead the visitors in their loss. In Thursday’s non-league matchup with the Spartans of Wyomissing, the lady Warriors found themselves playing from behind as they trailed 19-15 at halftime following a first quarter that saw the visiting team take a 12-8 lead. While Pyle did not lead all scorers on the night, that went to Wyomissing’s Lily Seyfert who racked

up 21, she did tally 15 and was 6-8 from the foul line. Lailana Batty and Elise Balmer each tallied eight to complement Pyle in the Warwick win. The Warriors pulled away in the fourth, outscoring the Spartans 19-5 after balanced play over the second and third quarters resulted in each team putting up identical totals, respectively, of seven and 13. Tied with Elizabethtown heading into Friday’s contest at Lebanon, the ladies again overcame early adversity as they trailed by seven after the Cedars out scored them 10-3 in the opening frame. They turned things around in the second with a 13-7 run that narrowed that margin to one point and sent them into the break, down 17-16. Ghiany Correa scored a team high 16 points for the Cedars, but was out dueled by Pyle who ended the night

with 18 including four buckets from long range as the Warriors used a fiery 14-7 run in the third to take the lead for good. Batty added nine and Jess Williamson had seven for Warwick which took a half game lead over the Bears with the victory, WRESTLING In a Section 1-2 crossover match, Warwick (2-5, 5-11) took on Lampeter-Strasburg (6-1, 7-1) at home last Wednesday on senior night in the final contest of the regular season and fell to the Pioneers 41-22. Despite leading 4-3 after two bouts, the Warriors fell behind in the third and never caught the Section Two runner up. Haydn Shreiner’s 18-6 major decision over Nick Salgado at 152 pounds negated Hector Colon’s 3-0 decision at 145 to start the night, however, the Pioneers then won seven of the next eight bouts. The Warriors were only able to manage five wins total with all bouts contested. David Hnasko put Warwick back on the board at 182 pounds when he broke open a scoreless tie with Logan Davidson in the second period with a take down and a three-point near fall to lead 5-1 heading into the third. Adding another takedown, Hnasko finished out the bout on top and logged the 7-1 decision to make it 12-7 in favor of the Pioneers. In an exciting matchup at 113

pounds, Owen Heffner scored a decision victory over Riley Bonholtzer in sudden victory for Warwick’s next three team points, coming from behind to do it. After scoring an opening takedown in the first period, Heffner gave up a penalty point and a reversal to enter the second trailing by one at 3-2, where neither wrestler scored. In the third, Bonholtzer got hit with a stalling warning and eventually surrendered a key point later in the round on another stalling call which sent the bout into overtime where Heffner secured a hard earned take down and victory. Logan Bortner and David Woolley ended the evening with consecutive pins at 132 and 138, respectively, with Bortner earning his in the second period after breaking a 2-2 tie, and Woolley making short work of Logan Bonholtzer in only 33 seconds. BOWLING At the conclusion of last week’s matches, the Warwick bowling team found themselves trailing Section Two leader Elizabethtown (63-21) as the Warriors (61-21) suffered a slight speed bump in the form of a 5-2 victory over Ephrata on Friday that dropped them into second place with only one match remaining on the schedule. “Needing to sweep Ephrata to stay tied for first in section two, we

league game remaining on the schedule at the end of the week while Warwick’s lone remaining matchup was a non-league contest with Solanco, both of which were played on Tuesday of this week. While Joey McCracken led the team with 19 points against Conestoga Valley last Tuesday, as a team the Warriors drained nine three pointers on the way to a decisive road victory. Warwick turned an early 14-12 lead into a 30-19 advantage at halftime after outscoring the Buckskins 16-7 in the second quarter. Keeping up the offensive pressure in the third, the visitors put up another 20 points while holding CV to only seven for a commanding 50-26 lead that was more than enough to withstand a 22-18 surge from the Bucks in the fourth. Conor Adams bucketed three from long range along the way to 17 points while Tate Landis added 12 in the victory. Kia Cipalla took the reins at home Friday night versus the Cedars, scoring 15. The Warriors used a 25-18 run in the second half to overtake Lebanon which saw a slim 14-11 first quarter lead evaporate as Warwick went into the locker room ahead 30-29 at the break. Joining Cipalla in scoring double digits were McCracken, who put up 13 and Chase Yarberough with 11. Adams added two from beyond the arc while Warwick, as a team, was 10-18 from the foul line. SWIMMING Warwick (1-4, 2-7) ended its regular season last Tuesday with a 114-51 defeat at the hands of Section Two champion Manheim Township (5-0 9-0) at

Both matches are Tuesday at Leisure Lanes. After a teaching moment on how to come back from adversity, we won games two and three vs. Ephrata 1066 - 891, and 1001 - 787. Carter Snavely rolled a high game of 255 in his third versus the Mounts to go with a 202 and 194 for a team high series of 651 while Tyler Miller (182, 227, 213-622) just edged out team mate Chris Goldsborough (199, 240, 182-621) in the Warwick victory. Leading up to Friday, the Warriors traveled to Palmyra Lanes last Wednesday where they took on Lebanon and came away with a sweep of the Cedars that kept them in a position to pace the Bears in the section race. Miller led the Warriors with a match high 683 series after rolling a 258, 224, and 201 and was followed by Snavely (205, 212, 243-660). Also, freshman Robert Speer earned his first career 600 series by rolling a 176, 223, and 202 for a three-game total of 601. Both took lessons at a local dance studio and, following graduation, majored in dance at DeSales University in Center Valley. At DeSales, Kline focused on choreography, while Faller was more interested in performance. The pair launched Emme Dance Collective in Lancaster at the end of June 2018. Emme Dance Collective is sponsored fiscally through Fractured Atlas in New York. In the past, Kline and Faller have used their talents to give back to the community by contributing to other local organizations, an effort they plan to repeat. The yearly dance concert helps raise funds to make that possible. “(The annual performance) keeps us going and allows us to give back and hold fundraiser shows, explained Faller. Tickets are necessary to attend the show. A discount will be offered for tickets purchased by Wednesday, Feb. 26. Tickets may be purchased at www.emmedancecollective.com. As with “Bring Into Being, “Veer will be performed in the style of contemporary dance, which includes techniques pulled from modern dance, but the program will depart from the themes of “Bring Into Being. “This year, we are incorporating some different themes, Kline pointed out. “There will be similarities, but we both tried to branch out. Faller agreed. “I think with the title ‘Veer,’ we both felt (the work) was jarring, she said, adding that the movement and music will be edgier compared to the calmer “Bring Into Being. “This time we are trying to pack a punch with our movement and everything we are showing, noted Faller. “Some movement is more animalistic, said Kline, who pointed out that a piece called “Birds of Paradise was influenced by tropical birds. “Some (numbers) are influenced by real-life events - even tragedies - and real-life relationships, she explained. As with the debut of the company in 2019, Kline and Faller noted that dances will be quick moving and engaging, and the choreography will be colorful and upbeat. Ensemble from pg 1 The Harrisburg Mandolin Ensemble (HME) will perform at the Lititz Public Library, 651 Kissel Hill Road, Lititz, on Thursday, Feb. 20, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. HME was formed in the summer of 2011 when mandolinists Tom Cook and Wade Yankey crossed paths at a performance and found a common love for playing eclectic acoustic tunes on mandolin family instruments. Their idea was to explore the tonal range from the mandolin to the mando bass and to explore new and eclectic material from Bach to bluegrass, jazz and roots music. Inspired by the early 20th-century tradition of the community mandolin orchestra, Cook and Yankey discovered that Harrisburg contained several other like-minded mandolin players with wide-ranging musical tastes. The band’s repertoire has grown to include original tunes and arrangements

from both HME members and local musical colleagues. The band plays an array of tunes and songs drawn from jazz, swing, bluegrass, old-time, folk, and world music. To preregister, readers may call the library at 717-626-2255 or email register@lititzlibrary.org with their name and the number of people attending in their group. Donna Lucidi is passionate about sewing, and she is eager to help others develop their skills. “Sewing was one of my fortes,” she said, reminiscing about her career as a family and consumer science teacher at high schools in Cambria and Lancaster counties. Lucidi also taught sewing classes for Penn State Extension and at quilting and fabric stores in Pennsylvania and North Carolina. She is a founding member of the Red Rose Quilters Guild. “People feel better about themselves when they can make something,” Lucidi remarked. “The idea (behind my classes) is to show people it’s fun to do these things.” Lucidi will teach three classes for the Manheim Township Recreation and Park Planning Department. Participation is open

to everyone, not just Manheim Township residents. A class on sewing a jelly roll pillow will meet from 1 to 4 p.m. on Thursdays, Feb. 13 and 20. This class is ideal for homeschooled students, as it is a project she taught in high schools, Lucidi said. Incidentally, “jelly roll” has nothing to do with cake and preserved fruit. Rather, it is the term used to describe a collection of 2.5-inch-wide strips of coordinated fabric. Students will be taught to create their own from fabric scraps, or jelly rolls may be purchased at practically any fabric store. Some sewing at home will be required. “Sewing Quilt Endings” will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Fridays, March 6 and 13. A sample book with a variety of borders and bindings will be completed in this class. The book can be used as a reference for flat borders, bias and straightgrain binding, miters, and bindings for curved edges. An introduction to quilting,

in which participants will sew a quilted nine-patch table runner, will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. on Thursdays, March 19 and 26 and April 2 and 16. All classes will be held in the blue room of Stauffer Mansion, 1241 Lititz Pike, Lancaster. Lucidi remembers taking needlework classes at Stauffer Mansion in her youth, so she finds it special to now be a teacher there. Her classes are offered during daylight hours to accommodate retirees, she said, adding that sewing skills can be used to make gifts for loved ones or charitable causes. Additionally, she noted, the camaraderie developed in classes and in the sewing community at large is a valuable benefit. “(The classes are) a good beginning or to get back into sewing,” Lucidi said. While students do not need to know all of the ins and outs of sewing, they will need to know how to thread their sewing machine, fill its bobbins, and conduct basic operations like straight and zigzag stitches. Students must provide their own sewing machines in good working order, including

The Lititz Garden Club will meet on Thursday, Feb. 6, at 6:30 p.m. at the Lititz Public Library, 651 Kissel Hill Road, Lititz. Kevin Glaes and Wayne Geltz of the ReadingBerks Rose Society will share their knowledge of growing roses. Glaes will present a photo slideshow of different types of roses from old garden roses to modern varieties. Glaes and Geltz will then discuss the fundamentals of growing roses, including planting, fertilizing, watering and pest and fungi control. Glaes has grown roses in the Reading area for about 25 years. He has also grown roses in Maryland, California, Montana, Texas, and Germany. power cords and foot pedals, bobbins, and thread, as well as extension cords and the owner’s manuals, if available. Many manuals are accessible via the internet. Sewing tools such as a scissors; a rotary cutter, mat, and ruler; and extra machine needles will also be required for the classes. Lucidi will send a supply list to enrolled students before each class begins. There is a cost to participate in the classes, and each class has a small additional fee for materials. Lucidi requested that students register no later than four days before the first day of each class, although she said she would accept registrations for the jelly roll pillow class as late as Tuesday, Feb. 11.
