Sully, the newest UDS Foundation service dog trainee, was named in honor of the yellow Labrador that served President George H. W. Bush. Sully is in need of a sponsor to fund the completion of his twoyear training before going to work helping to provide independence to a person with a disability.

When UDS Foundation moved from its previous home in Greenfield to 2270 Erin Court, Lancaster, the space available for the service dog program more than doubled. The new facility includes a kennel with space for 12 dogs, a cuddle room for puppies, and a large training room. According to Lori Breece, UDS service dog program manager, 12 puppies per year are brought into the program, which takes several years to turn an eight-week-old ball of fluff into a dog capable of giving a person with a disability a chance for greater independence. In addition to serving individuals, many UDS dogs are being sent to schools where they provide student See Service Dogs pg 6

According to Monica DePaul, director of the upcoming musical “The Secret Garden” at Cavod Theatre, the show is much loved among actors because of the strength of the musical score. “The music is so powerful it is like its own character,” remarked DePaul. “The music tells the story so well.” Cordell Huyard, director of Cavod Theatre, said he had been waiting for an opportunity to do the show since he first heard the music in high school. “As soon as (DePaul) mentioned (‘The Secret Garden’), I was on board,” said Huyard. “I love the music.” “The Secret Garden” will be staged at Cavod Theatre, 685 W. Main St., New Holland, at 7 p.m. on Fridays, Feb. 22 and March 1; at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturdays, Feb. 23 and March 2; and at 4 p.m. on Sundays, Feb. 24 and March 3. See “The Secret Garden” pg 6

Academic Kindergarten - in which children begin to learn the rudiments of subjects such as science, history, and geography while learning to view God as the Author of every subject. Both kindergarten classes incorporate field studies, as well. The Developmental Kindergarten program is appropriate for children who are 4 years old or who just turned 5 at the start of the school year. The program is activityoriented while introducing the structure and rigors of a formal classroom setting. As a first step into scholarship, the student notebook is introduced and students begin formal steps toward reading through the Sound Sensible program. Students develop early math skills, learn a Bible verse for each letter of the alphabet, and delve into literature as they study the life of Beatrix Potter. They explore music, art, and the environment around them. The Academic Kindergarten program is appropriate for students who are 5 years old through early age 6 at the start of the school year. United Way of Lancaster County is once again offering the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program to prepare federal, state and local income tax returns for free. United Way of Lancaster County’s VITA Program is one of more than 12,000 VITA programs across the country that the IRS relies on to help people file their taxes every year, completely free of charge. Last year, United Way of Lancaster County’s IRS-certified volunteers helped more than 10,000 individuals and families in Lancaster County complete their tax returns. VITA saved Lancaster County residents more than $2.7 million in tax prep fees, and more than $12.4 million in refunds went into their bank accounts. VITA provides free tax preparation services, including federal, state and local returns, to taxpayers who make less than $62,000 and who live, work or go to school in Lancaster County. The volunteer

tax preparers at United Way’s free tax preparation sites understand the 2018 TCJA (tax reform). They go through at least 40 hours of training and are certified by the IRS. The purpose of the program is to provide customers with high-quality, professional, personal service by trained volunteers who are equipped to identify tax refund opportunities for customers. The IRS will delay issuing refunds for taxpayers claiming the EITC and ACTC until Friday, Feb. 15. The law is designed to help the IRS find and stop fraud. However, the IRS notes that these refunds likely will not arrive in bank accounts or on debit cards until late February. Even though refunds may be delayed, taxpayers are still encouraged to file as early as possible. The county’s VITA sites began opening on Jan. 22. Sites include Community Action Partnership, 601 S. Rose & Shamrock Festival from pg 1 By Dayna M. Reidenouer

“Last year turned out to be even bigger than we thought it would be,” said Lancaster Celtic Arts Foundation president Esther Pujols, reflecting on the Rose & Shamrock Festival, which she chaired for the first time last year. “We had more than 2,500 attendees. People from 20 different states and Canada competed, but we had people come all the way from Ohio to attend the festival and see the bands.” Pujols was pleased with the community response, noting that as a result of the high turnout, improvements have been made to the layout for this year’s festival, which will be held on Friday, Feb. 15; Saturday, Feb. 16; and Sunday, Feb. 17, in downtown Lancaster city. Much of the event will take place at the Lancaster County Convention Center and Lancaster Marriott, but Tellus360, Annie Bailey’s Public House, and The Meduseld Meadery will also host festival components. “We outgrew the Marriott,” Pujols said. “We want to move in the direction of (even) more venues next year, similar to Lancaster Roots and Blues. We’re assuming people will

get out and about. People on social media seem excited about getting to the other venues (that we have announced).” In the Marriott itself, the number of stages devoted to bands has been increased to two. Additionally, both the performance by the Rehoboth Welsh Choir and the bagpiping competition sanctioned by the Eastern United States Pipe Band Association have been moved to larger spaces with more seating. “The organizers were shocked that people came to watch (the bagpipers),” Pujols said, explaining that piping competitions tend to be attended primarily by the musicians, but the interest of spectators was a welcome surprise. In addition to piping, competitions will include Irish music, Irish dancing, Irish baking, and Celtic art. Pujols said that as of Jan. 30, almost 700 dancers have entered, and more are expected to register by the deadline of Saturday, Feb. 9. The feis is governed and sanctioned by An Coimisiún Le Rincí Gaelacha (the Irish Dancing Commission), the North American Feis Commission, and the Mid-Atlantic Region.

“We offer every level (of dance),” Pujols said. She noted that competitors range in age from single digits to 60s. “(Some of these dancers) are the caliber that are being scouted for Riverdance and Lord of the Dance. People don’t realize there are these super-talented kids (and young adults) right under their noses,” she added. Admission to the festival will be free of charge, thanks to sponsorships from local businesses and individuals. Thanks to an anonymous donor, $600 will be divided among the winners of the youth division of the Irish music competition. “The money will be paid directly to music teachers so these kids can continue their lessons,” Pujols said. She praised the quality of the musicians that participated last year, relating that the festival is part of the circuit that gets instrumentalists and vocalists ready for the competition that leads up to All-Ireland. For All-Ireland the best Irish musicians from all over the world converge on a town in Ireland to compete for the highest honor in Irish music. “I’m not as familiar with the music scene, so this has

TAX RETURN PREPARATION been exciting for me to learn about it,” Pujols said. Professional musicians will perform throughout the festival and will include The Celtic Martins, Down By the Glenside, Charlie Zahm and Tad Marks, Fire in the Glen, Across the Pond, and Seasons. Dublin 5, a highenergy Celtic rock band from Annapolis, Md., and Lancaster’s own Ogham Stones will perform on Feb. 16 at 6 p.m. at the Marriott. Their performance is the only part of the festival that will require tickets. The festival will also offer instrument and Irish Gaelic workshops, traditional cuisine, vendors of all things Celtic, and more. For additional information about the festival or to buy tickets for the Feb. 16 concert, readers may visit www.roseandsham rock.org. Pictured on front:

The Rose & Shamrock Festival will be held in downtown Lancaster city on Feb. 15, 16, and 17 and will feature a celebration of Irish music, dance, and culture.

Warwick Grabs Section Crown, First Since 1991 Warwick’s boys (12-1, 14-6) only needed one more league win to clinch the outright Section Two crown heading into last Wednesday’s matchup with Conestoga Valley (1-11, 3-17) and led by Ryan Shirk’s 15 points, the Warriors did just that with a 69-32 win over the Buckskins. It also marked the first section title won by Warwick since 1991. The Warriors wasted no time in showing exactly what their intentions were by racing out to a 13-5 first quarter lead which had expanded to 36-9 by halftime thanks to a huge 23-point second quarter. Defensively, Warwick gave no breathing room to the visiting Bucks and only sent one CV shooter to the foul line while the Warriors went 10-16 on foul shots. Both Colby Martin and Caleb Schmitz joined Shirk in putting up double digits with each scoring 11 apiece. Martin nailed two from long range, only one behind game leader Shirk who had three. Jordan Ransing (7) led the Bucks who had no answer for Warwick’s fast paced offensive attack that outscored them 33-23 over the final two quarters of play. Trystan George (6), Conor Adams

(6), Nolan Rucci (5), Broden Price (4), Joey McCracken (3), Ethan Minnich (3), Justin Gerhart (2), and Brock Fassnacht (1) all contributed. On the other end of the spectrum, Warwick needed a 16-point fourth quarter to seal a four-point, 60-56 victory over Lebanon (4-7, 9-11) on the road Friday night. Leading by two points to start the final frame of a closely contested matchup, the Warwick defense held Lebanon in check, allowing the Cedars 14 in the slim margin of victory. Shirk again led as the game high scorer with 20 points and dropped in four three-pointers as did McCracken (18). Warwick opened a small, onepoint margin to lead 9-8 after one quarter of play before both offenses found their groove in the second with the Warriors posting an 18-17 advantage to lead 27-25 at the break. Both teams matched the other in the third with each putting up 17 before Warwick was able to barely edge the host Cedars in the fourth. and Adams (3) all added to the winning effort. SWIMMING For one of the Warwick swimming teams, perfection and a Section One title were on the line last Wednesday against Manheim Township while the other was looking to keep its head above water. For the lady Warriors, a chance at the top spot in the section was thwarted when the Blue Streaks, who were also undefeated heading into the meet, came away with a solid, 108-72 victory. The boys, who were 2-2 at the time, were handed a 131-42 defeat. Both Catherine Chen and Hannah Greenway represented the lone individual wins for Warwick and played equal parts in the only relay win of the night for Warwick as well. Greenway struck first for Warwick, touching in 25.10 to nab the top finish in the 50 freestyle while Chen and teammate Maya Hartzler finished 1-2 in the 100 freestyle with Chen finishing in 55.51. All three also held a spot on the winning 200 freestyle relay team which finished in a time of 1:43.29. The trio joined forces with Katie Jeans in claiming the lone relay win for Warwick and Chen just missed another victory when Manheim Photo by Mark Palczewski Photo by Mark Palczewski Warwick’s Joey McCracken reaches to block the shot by Warwick’s Broden Price drives past Conestoga Valley’s Sawyer Township’s Liz Perot caught her in the Conestoga Valley’s Jordan Ransing during the Warriors’ 69-32 Shertzer during the Warriors’ 69-32 Section Two win at home 200 freestyle, a race in which Chen led most of the way. last Wednesday. Section Two win at home last Wednesday.

There was not much that went the way of the Warrior on the boy’s side of the meet as Warwick’s Oliver Lance stood as not only the lone victor, but was top finisher in two events. With none of the boy’s relay teams winning, Lance won both the 200 IM and the 100 backstroke with respective times of 2:02.54 and 56.09. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL The lady Warriors (5-8, 7-12) watched a promising season slowly slip away as they lost six in a row including a loss to Ephrata (7-4, 8-12) that knocked them out of the L-L League playoffs. Number six came on the road last Wednesday against Conestoga Valley (3-9, 5-16), although the pendulum easily could have swung in favor of Warwick in the tightly contested 42-40 defeat. Reagan Longridge’s 11 points, which included a trio of three-pointers, and Lauren Pyle’s 10, with a trey thrown in as well, paced the Warriors who trailed 19-13 at halftime and then rallied late in the fourth, but fell just short. Both teams scored nine in the third to make it 28-22 heading into the final frame. In all, seven players scored for Warwick including Abby Rodgers (5), Sydney Weismandel (4), Lailani Batty (4), Tanner Armstrong (4), and Jess Williamson (3). Lebanon (2-9, 3-16) proved to be Warwick’s lucky charm as the Warriors,

who trailed by five heading into the second quarter, turned it on by outscoring the Cedars 42-21 over the course of the final three frames. Led by Rodgers’ 14 points, Warwick never let up on offense as well as defense, holding Lebanon to

only two points in the third. Pyle added 11 and went 3-4 at the foul line for Warwick with Weismandel (8), Longridge (6), Batty (5), Emily Williamson (3), Haley Delgiacco (2), and Julia Forsythe (2) getting in on the action as well. BOWLING Warwick’s bowling team also clinched a section title with a 7-0 sweep of Elizabethtown (62-15, 92-20) last Monday at Dutch Lanes. Warwick (75-2, 82-2) held a 13-game lead over the Bears at the end of last week with no chance of getting caught as the Warriors had two League matches remaining while Elizabethtown only had one. Ashley Sham’s 743 series led all bowlers as she rolled a 228, 236, and 279. She was followed closely by Isaac Erickson’s 266, 258, and 199 for a 723. Tyler Miller (246, 229, 188-663), and Carter Snavely (204, 203, 227-634) rounded out Warwick’s scoring while Katelyn Garman’s 591 series led the Photo by Mark Palczewski Bears. Landis Homes To Showcase Art Landis Homes, 1001 E. Oregon Road, Lititz, will showcase the artwork of photographer and woodturner Jim Bowman and potter Lin Bowman, a husband-andwife duo, in the Crossings Gallery, located in the Calvin G. and Janet C. High

Learning and Wellness Center. The exhibit will be on display through Monday, March 25. Jim purchased his first professional 35mm camera while in college. Although trained to be a biology teacher, he

instead opened a photography studio and began a career of magazine photo illustration. After working more than three decades in film and video production and editing, Jim returned to his early life profession. In 2017, Jim retired and decided to pursue his visual explorations. He also took up wooden bowl turning on a lathe. This activity allows him to shape wood in a free flowing form. Since retiring from her days as a cardiology nurse, Lin is a part-time nanny for her granddaughter, Agnes. One of her spare-time hobbies is playing with clay. She has recently experimented with native clays found on the Northeast and Bohemia rivers in Maryland. Fish, flowers, and various additional designs are incorporated into and onto her pieces. The Bowmans, former city residents who now live in Dauphin County, are parents of two adult children who are both artists as well. Lin’s mother, Anna Mae Hoober, 106, is the oldest resident at Landis Homes. For more information, readers may visit www.landishomes.org or call 717-381-3550.

only visits when the boy is sleeping. Mary also discovers her Aunt Lily’s garden, which is locked up and overgrown with vines. She and her friends Dickon, played by Joseph Kelly, and Martha, played by Lauren Groff, are determined to revive the garden and the house as well. Because of the sobering subject matter of the drama, DePaul said that it has been challenging to stage the show without letting the presentation become too dark. “To pursue the direction we wanted to go without changing lyrics or lines, (we have been) instilling in the cast that this is about searching for God and trying to figure out what is blessing them,” said DePaul, who noted that symbolism and other techniques will be employed to lighten the mood and find joy even in the face of death. Both DePaul and Huyard are excited to be working with the musical cast in bringing the show’s score to life. “They are well balanced and great musicians,” said Huyard. “I think people will be very

impressed with the music coming out of this cast.” DePaul noted that one of her favorite numbers is “Lily’s Eyes.” “(The song) is this beautiful duet sung by Weaver and Lawback, who play the Craven brothers,” she said, adding that “A Bit of Earth” is another standout musical selection. The message of the show, according to DePaul, focuses on love. “Love is life,” she noted. “Without love, we have nothing.” Huyard agreed, calling the garden Mary discovers a metaphor for bringing love back to a dark and desolate place. “(Mary) loses her family, and she comes into her uncle’s life,” he said. “He’s living in a very dark place, and she brings life back into her uncle’s home.” Tickets, which are discounted for students age 17 and under, may be purchased in advance at www.CavodAcademy.com or by calling 717-354-3355 on Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tickets may be available at the door for a higher price.

Service Dogs from pg 1 support. “Since we have been here (in the new location), we have added several clients in less than a year, including three or four schools,” said Breece. “We are so pleased with the pups-in-the-classroom opportunity. Our vision would be a dog in every school or at least every district.” In schools, dogs serve students with multiple disabilities, but they also serve in learning support classrooms. Kristy Smith, service dog program coordinator with UDS, said that dogs help with physical therapy or with fine motor skill issues, but they also aid students struggling with “the emotional aspects of school and life’s challenges.” Breece added that in some classrooms, time with a dog can be an incentive. “For some of those students who are more challenged, it’s a calming influence, and they can work toward time with the dog as a reward,” she said. Smith noted that currently UDS dogs are present in Cocalico, Ephrata, Penn Manor, and Northern York County school districts. “Each dog has a teacher or principal they go home with each night as the main handler, but we ask the schools to

have a group of handlers,” she explained. Having a group of handlers allows a dog to work in multiple rooms. Breece noted that having a dog in a school affects the atmosphere of the building. “It changes the lives of the faculty by changing the environment behind the cement walls,” she said. “We’d like to see more dogs in schools.” A service dog’s training begins when it becomes part of the BARKS Prison Program, through which it is trained by an inmate at a Pennsylvania correctional facility. Puppies live with their inmate handlers around the clock, learning up to 50 commands. At the age of one year, the dogs return to Lancaster. For the next six months, they live in a volunteer puppy home. “(The dogs) attend weekly outings and training sessions, and they will go out in the community so they can get socialization,” explained Breece. At the age of 18 months, the dogs are sent to trainers for six months of specialty training. Smith explained that many of the tasks the dogs perform are extensions of actions that come naturally to Labradors,

such as retrieving and tugging, which make up 95 percent of the working service dog force. “A lot of the main job is retrieval from the floor or the counter or helping pay,” she said, adding that dogs tug open doors, carry bags that are too heavy (for their client), and remove articles of clothing, such as socks. “They push elevator buttons and handicapped-accessible buttons and turn light switches on and off.” The newest puppy in the UDS program has been named Sully in honor of the yellow Labrador that served President George H. W. Bush and was photographed lying near his master’s casket during the funeral services in early December. UDS’ Sully is in need of a sponsor, which can be a local individual, organization, or business, to cover his twoyear training. Breece is also looking for a sponsor for the dog program’s new training room. Readers who would like to learn more about sponsorship and volunteer opportunities with UDS may visit www.ud services.org.
