Take A Sweet Stroll At UZRC “We are just so excited to bring it back this year,” exclaimed Megan Weiss, director of marketing and development for the organization located at 722 Furnace Hills Pike, Lititz. “Our updated space is going to make this so much better for flow.” Renovations to UZRC, which included a larger chapel and new entrance were completed in September 2021. Last year’s Heart of the Home Virtual Gala Dinner to raise funds for the new chapel replaced the Chocolate Stroll. The 2022 stroll will feature more than 12 stops where participants can enjoy chocolate treats both sweet and savory. Among these will be a mole with tortilla chips from Forefront, mini chocolate cupcakes from Scratch Bakes, and cookie butter bark from Spence Candies. Other treats will be provided by Evans Candy, the Hershey Company, Miesse Candies, and Wilbur Chocolate. Additional sweets will be offered by Chocolate Stroll silent auction items resident families, team members, and the UZRC culinary team. will include experiences and this ue to COVID-19 precautions, United Zion Retirement Community’s (UZRC) annual Chocolate Stroll was not held in 2021. This year, however, not only will the community hold the sweet event, but organizers are looking forward to showing off some changes that have been made at UZRC.

Kim McDevitt (left) and Rosie Mann are working to bring family peer support to Lancaster County.
According to Kim McDevitt, director of Mental Health America of Lancaster County (MHALC), parents of children facing mental health issues could benefit from working with others who really understand their situation. “We feel there is a gap in services in terms of supporting the parents,” said McDevitt. “We don’t want (parents) to be alone in this.” To fill that gap, MHALC is launching family peer support, a program that provides parents with See MHALC pg 2

trained volunteer peers who understand what they are going through and understand the mental health system. “Support is known to be effective,” said Rosie Mann, family peer support program consultant, who cited national studies of family peer support that show that intervention results in better school attendance and need for fewer disciplinary supports, among other benefits. According to Mann, peers are able to interact with parents in ways that clinicians cannot. “(A peer can) take away a sense of shame and judgment from a parent,” Mann explained. “When (advice) comes from a peer, (he or she is saying), ‘I have tried this and it worked. Maybe you want to try it.’” Since the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic, mental health issues among young people have been on the rise. “The surgeon general put out an advisory for youth mental health,” said McDevitt. “(Since the beginning of the pandemic) there has been a 51% increase in emergency room visits for (girls) who have attempted suicide.” For boys, the number is up as well. McDevitt added that supports are in place for students in school, but those do not extend to the home. “We connect them to appropriate resources,” she said. Mann added, “You have a child that threatens suicide and goes to the emergency room, and the doctor says, ‘You’re all right (to go home),’ but when you go home, you still have a family whose child threatened suicide. They are in crisis that their child feels
that way.” Mann said that is where family peer support steps in. “Parent education programs are part of supports for families,” said Mann, who noted that the program can help parents determine what classes and other support systems will best serve them. While clinical care is meant to produce outcomes over time, Mann noted many parents need help with daily issues. “With parents, oftentimes, they have had so much clinical care, but they still can’t get through a day. That’s where we come in,” Mann said. Mann and McDevitt both noted that family peer support can provide parents with a sense of empowerment and efficacy. “Efficacy is the power to change my circumstances,” noted Mann, who said the idea is to battle the sense of helplessness and hopelessness parents often feel. Mann said that her goal in family peer support is to halve parents’ distress and double their joy. While having a peer to share distress with provides support, sharing joy means emphasizing a child’s successes to make parenting pleasurable and keep parents and children connected in spite of the challenges they face. MHALC has plans to screen and train volunteers for the program. “ We are looking for volunteers who are articulate and who have shown they can effectively advocate,” said Mann. Readers who would like to volunteer may call 717-397-7461. More information about MHALC may be found at www.mhalancaster.org.

Sweetheart To-Go Meal Will Spread Love BY CATHY MOLITORIS
“February is often known as the month of love,” said Kris Wilson, director of advancement for Mt. Hope Nazarene Retirement Community in Manheim. While many associate that love with flowers, candy or other Valentine’s Day gifts, there’s a bigger love at work at Mt. Hope, Wilson stated. “It’s a time of remembering Christ’s love for us and the call to love others as Christ first loved us. In turn, we emphasize the importance of looking out for our neigh-
bors, but the journey of love doesn’t stop there.” February, she notes, is also the month during which Random Acts of Kindness Week is commemorated, offering an opportunity to bless others with expressions of love. That makes February the perfect month for Mt. Hope to hold a sweetheart to-go banquet, Wilson noted. The curbside pickup meal will be offered on Saturday, Feb. 26, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot of LCBC Manheim, 2392 Mount Joy Road, Manheim. Each meal will

include barbecue fire-grilled chicken, gourmet cheese potatoes, sweet and sour saucy green beans, applesauce, a dinner roll and butter and a dessert. Proceeds from the meal will support Mt. Hope, a 50-bed nonprofit nursing facility that provides care for seniors and disabled people regardless of their financial circumstances. Although Mt. Hope is often thought of as a senior residence, the facility cares for anyone in need, Wilson said, sharing the story of 48-yearold Chris Dickson. Dickson became ill in the spring of 2020, eventually receiving a diagnosis of a large tumor on his cervical spine. The tumor was a rare form of cancer of the central nervous system. After Dickson received 14 months of hospital care and hospice services, doctors suggested that Dickson move into a skilled nursing home for end-of-life care. Wilson
recalled Dickson’s mother worrying about how to pay for his care and considering trying to care for him herself before contacting Mt. Hope. Dickson moved into Mt. Hope in May of 2021 and passed away peacefully on Oct. 19. Participating in the sweetheart to-go banquet will help Mt. Hope continue to provide care for residents like Dickson. “It’s the heartfelt gifts that keep Mt. Hope going and able to provide a wonderful place for people to call home,” Wilson stated. “Mt. Hope continues to step in and say, yes, when other doors close for people with situations like Chris Dickson’s story.” Preorders will be taken for meals and saved under the name provided when ordered. To preorder or for more information, call Wilson at 717682-8026 or email advance ment@mthopenazarene.org by Saturday, Feb. 19. Extra meals will be available on-site while

Trinity Art Gallery at United Zion Retirement Community, 722 Furnace Hills Pike, Lititz, will exhibit “Color and Light” by painter Stacey Zimmerman in February. Zimmerman has enjoyed painting and drawing throughout her life. She uses artwork both as an outlet for creativity and self-expression and as a way to inspire others. Heavily influenced by Claude Monet, she creates impressionistic paintings with a focus on the use of light and color. Nature is the underlying subject of each piece, and the 14-year resident of Lancaster County said she loves the change of seasons and the landscapes of the local area. Zimmerman accepts commissions and also offers her artwork on a variety of items, including pillows, jewelry, shower curtains and stationery. Two key pieces in the “Color and Light” exhibit are “Nature Will Prevail” and “Seasonal Renewal.” “Nature Will Prevail” displays the merge of colors in
changing seasons, with the goal of reminding viewers that nature will succeed in the progress needed to move forward. This piece is about positive change. “Seasonal Renewal” showcases vibrant colors in the background with birch trees in the foreground. The trees stand out in a crowd of colors, which represent
nature’s beautiful chaos. The exhibit will be open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. from Tuesday, Feb. 1, to Sunday, Feb. 27. All Trinity Art Gallery visitors will be screened and are required to wear a mask covering their nose and mouth. For more information on the gallery, including exhibiting, contact marketing@uzrc.org.

Come Dance The Night Away Looking for a way to celebrate Valentine’s Day with your sweetheart? Look no further than the Sweethearts Ball. The event will be held on Saturday, Feb. 12, from 5 to 10 p.m. at the Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim. The festivities, which will
include dinner, dancing and a silent auction, will benefit We Help Children, a Christian nonprofit created by Drew and Cindy Metcalf. “Drew and Cindy served in Guatemala for 10 years, and the primary focus of their ministry was to work with children in orphanages,” said Gabe Martin, a board member of We Help Children

and the organizer of the Sweethearts Ball. “During the pandemic, they were called back home, and they partnered with an organization called The Haft to continue their mission.” We Help Children now operates a restoration farm in Bradford County, where people come for hope and healing. The organization also continues to train people on five continents throughout the world. The Sweethearts Ball will feature dinner catered by Mission BBQ, with a menu including pulled pork and chicken, sliced brisket, macaroni and cheese, baked beans, green beans, rolls and cornbread. Dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m. After dinner, guests will have the opportunity to hit the dance floor. “We have a wonderful dance instructor, Rebecca Gentry from City Ballroom, and she will teach a few dance moves for those who aren’t particularly skilled at dancing,” Martin said. “It’s a nice way to break the ice and get everyone out on the dance floor.” The evening will also include a silent auction of items such as gift cards and gift baskets, with proceeds benefiting the programs of We Help Children. The organization has held
three charity balls in the past, but always at Christmastime, Martin said. “This year, we decided to switch to Valentine’s Day because we’ve found that people would like to attend in December, but the Christmas season is just too busy for a lot of people,” he said. “This gives people the option for something fun to do in February.” Hosting the event around Valentine’s Day adds another layer of appeal, he noted. “If you want to treat your significant other to a great Valentine’s Day, buy tickets and come to this event,” he remarked. “There’s dinner and there’s entertainment. It’s a complete date night for you.” To purchase advance tickets for the Sweethearts Ball, visit www.itickets.com/events/460 319. For more information on the event, visit www.thesweet heartsball.com. speakers are Jason McDougall, who will present “Ways to Lower Your Christian Education Costs”; Tim Shawaryn, who will speak on “Protecting Your Family for the Now and Then”; and Lamar King on “International Stewardship Impact.” “King brings a lot of the biblical presupposition as to why generosity is prompted throughout Scripture,” said Outlar. “We thought, ‘How can we teach younger people how to handle their money?’” said Outlar of the theme. “We are emphasizing that families with children (cannot) start too young to be grateful and show that gratitude through what you give … to others.” The workshops are free and include a continental breakfast. The 2022 event, which will be held at LCCS, 2390 New Holland Pike, Lancaster, on Saturday, March 12, from 9 a.m. to noon, will feature Peter Greer, CEO of HOPE International, as the plenary speaker. Greer holds a master’s degree in public policy from the Harvard Kennedy School, and he has worked in Rwanda, Cambodia, and Zimbabwe. He has co-authored 14 books, including “Watching Seeds Grow,” filled with practical steps for the young entrepreneur, which Greer wrote with his young son. Greer, who chose to speak on “Gratitude Generates Generosity,” said, “When entitlement is on the rise, we need a movement of gratitude. Gratitude is the antidote to cynicism and leads to healthier families, teams, schools, and communities.” He added, “Watch what happens when we unleash the positive potential of thankfulness.” Outlar said that Greer was chosen because of the type of ministry he leads. HOPE International, located in Lancaster, helps create financial solvency in 15 countries through savings and microfinance groups. “(HOPE) asks people to invest in people in Third World countries,” noted Outlar, who added that the people whose livelihoods are funded then build businesses in the name of their Lord and Savior and go on to help other people. “It has a chain reaction,” he noted. Greer will also present one of four workshops, speaking on “Teaching the Young To Be Generous,” in addition to his initial address. Returning
