Manheim Township Rec. Introduces Homeschool Phys. Ed. BY ANN MEAD ASH
When Michael Kurland graduated from the University of Tennessee, he headed to Jacksonville, Fla., with an idea. “I realized there was a large homeschool contingency down there,” said Kurland. “I started a homeschool PE (physical education) program.” In 2003, Kurland began teaching a curriculum he designed, attracting 400 students the first year, and eventually doubling the size of the program. Later, Kurland took the concept to a more urban setting in Maryland, where hundreds of students took part, some driving up to an hour for a class.
A year ago, Kurland came to the Lancaster area where he took the position of youth sports and activities manager with the Manheim Township Recreation Department. His background came to the attention of his supervisor Matt Stopa, and the result is a homeschool gym class for Lancaster County students. Classes for any homeschooled children in the county were slated to begin on Jan. 4 at the Overlook Activity Center, 301 Golf Drive, Lancaster. The first session ended on Thursday, Jan. 28. Consecutive sessions will be offered beginning Monday, March 1; Monday, March 29; Monday, April 26; and Monday, May 24. See Manheim Township pg 5
Warwick teachers Megan Cupo-Fisher (left) and Meghan Young (right) introduced the 1,049-mile Iditarod dogsled race to their students through an author study of Newbery Award winner Gary Paulsen.
ixth-grade students at John R. Bonfield Elementary learned about the Iditarod in March 2020 due to a grant from the Warwick Education Foundation. The foundation funded the books and technology access that would bring the 1,049-mile race to life.
“Each student picked three different mushers to research and picked their favorite musher to follow on the trail each day.” Bonfield teachers Megan CupoFisher and Meghan Young had selected Newbery Honor-winner Gary Paulsen as the author their class would study. They picked Paulsen’s memoir “Woodsong” as a
Iditarod website, and they also had access to other content, including livestreamed interviews. Young noted that the grant provided funds to purchase a variety of books by Paulsen, allowing students to get a better understanding of his style and craft. The books and technology cost a total of $800, according to Barbara Mobley, executive director of the Warwick Education Foundation. For parents or grandparents who might want to introduce their children to the Iditarod, Paulsen has also written “Winterdance: The Fine Madness of Running the Iditarod.” His three Newbery Honor novels are “Dogsong,” “Hatchet,” and “The Winter Room.” For more information on the Warwick Education Foundation, readers may visit www.warwickef.org or contact Mobley at info@WarwickEF.org.
Submissions Sought For Mental Health Blog BY CATHY MOLITORIS
When it comes to mental health, sharing stories can help reduce stigma, provide support and offer answers. That’s the hope behind a new blog launched on Mental Health America of Lancaster County’s website. The organization created its new website, https://mhalancaster.org, in November 2020, and it launched the blog in January.

way of introducing the sixth-graders to dogsledding and Alaska’s annual Iditarod race. Reading “Woodsong” became the springboard for immersing the students in Alaskan culture, geography and woodcraft; learning about dog-sledding, animal care, and the life of a musher; and following the race day by day through Paulsen’s eyes. Interactive and livestream technology enhanced the learning experience. “Each student picked three different mushers to research and picked their favorite musher to follow on the trail each day,” Young noted. She said that students followed the mushers’ daily progress, journaling about checkpoints, weather, and more and writing narratives from a musher’s point of view. Student Dominick Pepo explained that he and his fellow students tracked the mushers using the GPS information on the

“A lot of our website is education-based,” said Caryn Thompson, marketing coordinator for Mental Health America of Lancaster County. “What we’re trying to do with the blog is complement that with personal stories. As far as mental health goes, it’s a topic that’s not just about facts and figures. We can tell you all the stats in the world, but that is not always going to get our point across. Sometimes, the experience of other people educates just as much.” The blog is being written by in-house writers, including Thompson, but will also be open to community
Bridal Open House Slated A bridal open house will be hosted by the Eicher Arts Center, 409 Cocalico St., Ephrata, from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 7. The event will feature limited timed tickets available in two time slots. Attendees may choose from 1 or 2:30 p.m. Tickets will include a tour the historic Eicher Arts Center, dating back to 1734. Attendees will meet 15 unique vendors, enjoy refreshments, and listen to music provided by a disc jockey. Vendors will offer specials, and there will be opportunities to win gift baskets. Tickets are nominally priced and may be purchased by visiting www.event brite.com and search for Eicher Arts Center.
Edna’s Angels Plans Meeting Edna’s Angels will meet on Tuesday, Feb. 23, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. via Zoom. This group is Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development’s women’s giving circle, offering members opportunities to connect with other women who have made a commitment to supporting Schreiber. During the meeting, attendees will hear grant proposals from Schreiber therapists and then vote electronically on which projects to support. Once the votes are tallied, Edna’s Angels will make gifts to Schreiber. To learn how to join, readers may contact Susan Fisher at 717-393-0425, ext. 129, or sfisher@schreiberpediatric.org.
submissions. Categories include educational pieces from people including physicians and counselors, personal stories and a creative category. For this last category, Thompson emphasized that the blog could include a variety of submissions. “Not everybody connects with words,” she explained. “If somebody wants to send in art, like photography or paintings ... we’re OK with that, too.” Thompson already has five or six submissions for the blog and said that anyone who is inter-
ested in contributing can get help to get started. “We have a list of topics if you’re not sure what to write about,” she stated. “We can give you some prompt sentences to give you a boost as a way to start writing. You don’t have to keep going on that topic, but it might get your creative juices flowing.” Submissions will be vetted by the organization, and Thompson is hoping to post weekly to the blog. “When you have people out there in the world telling their
personal stories, that helps reduce the stigma surrounding mental health,” she remarked. “You can see that here is a human being who is living with this diagnosis, but she is still going to work, still feeding her family, still contributing to society. These personal stories can help other people learn what it’s like to live with anxiety or to be bipolar, for example.” Thompson said the blog has a personal connection because she’s the mother of a 20-yearold son who has bipolar disorder. She started writing about
her experiences as a parent when he was in middle school, and her writing was shared with other parents. “I know that personal stories can help other people,” she stated. “And if personal stories are engaging, people are more likely to read the educational information on our website and more likely to want to learn more.” For more information about submitting material to the blog, readers may contact Thompson at cthompson@ mhalancaster.org.

“Less Snore, More Cuddle” Are you having trouble sleeping in 2021? If so, please... Take This Reader’s Quiz: 1. Do you snore at night, or sleep with someone who does? 2. Do you wake up with pain in your back or neck? 3. Do you share a bed with someone who wants a firmer or softer mattress than you? 4. Do you wish you could wake up more refreshed and full of energy? If you answered “Yes” twice or more, this story is for you.
Introducing “Less Snore, More Cuddle™” Sleep Systems The only sleep systems that provide a Cuddle Zone in the middle, while raising or lowering head or feet sections. This solves common health problems for couples who sleep together. Here are some of the healthy benefits:
The Snoring Solution Did you know that astronauts don’t snore in space? Snoring is made worse by gravity’s effect on the throat, which narrows the airway. For this reason, snoring can be cured by sleeping in zero gravity -- or on an adjustable Cuddle Zone sleep system to elevate you head.
Stop Compromising Your Sleep If you wish you half of the bed was firmer or softer, a Cuddle Zone system can help. With “His & Her” custom-fit technology, you get a firmness that’s just right for each of you, you keep the Cuddle Zone.
Back and Neck Pain, Gone Sleeping without pain requires body support and spinal alignment. Unlike “firm or soft” mattresses, Cuddle Zone systems support the spine and neck with 2 to 4 comfort layers.
More Energy, More Life Cuddle Zone systems help give you deep, restorative sleep. Your muscles repair and grow, and your brain flushes out toxins. You wake up refreshed and energized.
Budget Bed or Sleep System? Why visit a local store when you can shop online? Because we don’t sell budget beds. We offer sleep systems, combining mattress, adjustable base and pillow. Each fitted to your needs. You can even experience any sleep system in our Dream Room. No website does that.
And those “unbiased” mattress review websites? They’re often owned by huge, private equity firms. But we’re not a faceless company. We’re locally owned in Lancaster. When you shop here, you support the community.
Now Explore Your Options At Gardner’s Mattress & More, we’ve curated over 24 Cuddle Zone sleep systems for you to see in person, 7 days a week. Private appointments are available. People enjoy our shopping experience, in part because there’s no sales pressure ever. And we have over 200 verified stories of customer delight for your review. To promote social growth, Kurland has designed the curriculum to include teamwork and building individual self-esteem. “Parents receive progress reports after each session,” said Kurland, adding that

This February, the American Heart Association (AHA), a nonprofit organization focused on heart and brain health for all, is teaming up with companies around the country to fight cardiovascular disease through Life Is Why, a cause marketing campaign benefiting the AHA. Life Is W hy invites consumers to celebrate their reasons to live healthier, longer lives - by giving. Weis Markets also participated in the campaign in 2020. Through Life Is W hy, Weis Markets and its customers have a quick and easy way to give to the AHA and support its mission. Weis
joins several national companies, including Advance Auto, Kroger, Orangetheory Fitness, Pilot/Flying J, Stage Stores, Stater Bros. Markets and Stein Mart in supporting the campaign. Donations through Life Is Why’s participating retailers - no matter the amount allow the AHA to fund research aimed to improve the health outcomes of heart and stroke patients, train more than 2.5 million high school students in CPR annually and support the work of local entrepreneurs and organizations working to improve health outcomes in underresourced communities.
Weis Markets is once again supporting the American Heart Association through its annual Life Is Why campaign.
Those interested in supporting the AHA can look for the Life Is Why logo on Weis Markets mailers and posters and at the register this
month. To learn more about the Life Is Why campaign and other participating companies, readers may visit www.heart.org/lifeiswhy.

The Giant Company recently announced it has joined the GreenChill program, a voluntary U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) partnership with food retailers, refrigeration system manufacturers and chemical manufacturers to reduce refrigerant emissions and decrease their environmental impacts. As a program partner, GreenChill provides the Giant Company and other industry stakeholders with information and assistance to transition to environmentally-friendly refrigerants, reduce the amount of refrigerant they use, eliminate refrigerant leaks, implement environmental best practices
and adopt green refrigeration technologies. There are more than 12,500 GreenChill partner stores throughout the country. The Giant Company is currently performing refrigerant conversions, installing leak detectors and replacing older refrigeration units when possible within its nearly 190 stores. For more information on the EPA’s GreenChill Program, readers may visit www.epa.gov/ greenchill. The Giant Company also announced that it has been awarded the 2020 Gold Plate Award by the FMI Foundation in the COVID-19 Heroes category. This category, which is new to the annual awards program, recognizes charitable programs that help families share meals together during the pandemic. The Giant Company accepted its 2020 Gold Plate Award for its program “The Giant Company Is for Today’s Table” during National Family Meals Month at the virtual FMI Midwinter Executive Conference on Jan. 26. This is the second Gold Plate Award for the Giant Company; it was recognized in 2018 for its “Power of One More Family Meal” campaign. During National Family Meals Month last September, the Giant Company launched its For Today’s Table brand platform, which included refreshed uniforms and store décor, merchandising innovations and more. Customers were encouraged to share photos of their
family connecting over a meal on social media using #ForTodaysTable during the month. For every photo shared, the Giant Company donated the cash equivalent to provide 100 meals to neighbors in need. In addition, ads were developed featuring real families with footage of their daily lives, including mealtime, for television and radio spots.
The Giant Company distributed red tables, benches and picnic blankets throughout the community and to area food banks. On Sept. 26, 2020, National Family Day, the first 100 customers in stores also received a picnic blanket. The Giant Company rewarded its own team members, as well, providing $100 in Grocery Dollars to each of its 35,000 team members.
