Tour to highlight unique aspect of local history BY JEFF FALK

Over the next seven months, the Lititz Historical Foundation will offer another one of its unique tours. The Lititz Whiskey and History Tour explores the relationship between the distilled spirit and the locale’s culture-filled past. “It’s a unique way to share the

history of Lititz,” said Cory Van Brookhoven, president of the Lititz Historical Foundation. “Everyone has a great time.” The two-hour guided tour begins at the corner of Main and Broad Street in the borough and works its way east on Main Street. Along the way, visitors are treated to stories of local historic events, places

FEBRUARY 15th - FEBRUARY 26th FEBRUARY 15th - FEBRU One of the broader goals of the Warwick Resilience Community Event is to create open lines of communication between the community and the school district.

Warwick School District, community collaborate on resiliency “Any school district in any town is the center of the community,” said Carolyn Enigk, the Warwick School District’s public relations and marketing coordinator. “When we’re looking toward the future, we’re looking at the kids, the next generation. The school is very much in the middle. The school only exists because we have families. We’re kind of this central hub to connect people. I almost feel like this school is a bridge to the community.” This year ’s edition of the Warwick School District’s Resilience Community Event will be

There was a time when not everyone had a computer. Now, every one of our students has their own device. We also have this unique tech gear that’s enhancing their learning. Parents would not have had this technology when they were in school.” Expected to be presenting information on that Thursday are representatives of the Caron Foundation, emergency service personnel, the Pennsylvania Office of the Attorney General, addic tion specialists from Lancaster County Joining Forces and two Warwick School District technology integration coaches. Among the topics to be breached are risk behaviors, social media, vaping, drugs and alcohol and technology. The event will be presented as

It’s for anyone who has a child, knows a child or could be impacted by these topics. Prevention ends up being so crucial in any of these instances. We want to educate students and families.” “It’s also a good way to get to know the people in the district,” she added. “There may be names you’re hearing all the time, but maybe haven’t met before.” Before expanding its scope in 2017, the Resilience Community Event’s roots can be traced to Warwick’s former Parents Night. “As we grew, we realized this information isn’t just for parents,” said Enigk. “That’s where the community aspect came in. Some of these topics can be very difficult and involve overcoming. Resiliency is building yourself back up again and overachieving obstacles. Nothing is ever too far gone.”

Go shopping at an indoor yard sale BY CATHY MOLITORIS

You never know what you might find at the annual Ruhl’s Church indoor yard sale. “There’s always a huge variety,” said Kris Gray, one of the event organizers. The sale will be held on Saturday, March 2, from 7 to 11 a.m. in the fellowship hall of the church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim. More than 30 stand holders will participate in the event. “There will be baby clothes, household items, puzzles and a lot of antiques,” said Barb Dunmire, one of the event organizers. Gray noted that church members may donate items for a table where all proceeds from sales directly benefit the church and its ministries. “People enjoy getting to clean out their closets, and it’s a good excuse to pass along treasures to someone else,” she said. “We have a big table of things this year.” The yard sale will also feature a table of free new and used Bibles and devotional books for people of all ages. Along with yard sale items, a variety of food will be for sale, most prepared by the members of the congregation. The menu will include egg sandwiches, homemade chicken corn noodle soup, hot dogs, barbecue sandwiches, baked goods and assorted

beverages. New this year, organizers will offer a door prize up for grabs for anyone who attends the sale. The winner will be contacted after the sale and does not need to be present to win. Proceeds from stand holder donations and the food stand help fund the missions and ministry activities of the Sunshine adult Sunday school class. The class organizes and distributes food boxes for local families in need at Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter; supports the church’s participation in Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes; and hosts a special banquet for senior citizens. The class also sends cards to homebound members, donates winter coats for children and supports three local ministries. Beyond serving as a fundraiser, the yard sale helps the church connect with the surrounding community, Dunmire said. “It helps people know more about us, and it also brings in people from other communities,” she stated. “We get lots of people attending this, not just people from Manheim.” Free parking is available in the church’s large lot, and the building is handicapped-accessible. Neither pets nor smoking is permitted inside the building. For more information, call the church office at 717-665-3400.

team player made an inappropriate gesture as he crossed home plate. “How do we respond to that as a team?” he asked. “We don’t want to emotionally react. We want to take a deep breath and respond.” Swarr said that the FCA volunteer process includes an application and a 30-minute training video. “It’s an introduction to FCA’s discipleship strategy,” he said. “Ideally, (volunteers) meet regularly with the local staff people for resources and advice.” Burns added that character

coaches are asked to be at each home game and to try to be at practice once or twice a week for 30 minutes as their schedule allows. FCA has chapters in nearly every Lancaster County school district, and the organization is eager to meet individuals who would like to serve as character coaches and team coaches who are open to taking part in the program. Burns also noted that character coaching may look different depending on the specific sport and the players. He pointed out that Diana Roth, who is the FCA representative for ELANCO and Cocalico school districts and Lancaster Mennonite High School, is also a character coach for the Garden Spot girls’ soccer team. “It’s a team of girls with an all-male coaching staff,” explained Burns. “(Her role) opens doors for girls when they’re going through stuff. Downsizing? Have Questions?

The Phillips Museum of Art at Franklin & Marshall College will present “Green Practices in Historical Clothing” on Thursday, Feb. 22, at 4:30 p.m. The museum is located in Steinman College Center, 628 College Ave., Lancaster. Karin J. Bohleke, director of the Fashion Archives and Museum of Shippensburg University, will speak about fashion’s environmental and social impact, which ranks it as one of the planet’s biggest polluters and contributors to poverty through sweat-shop labor. Awareness of these issues has made some consumers begin to rethink their wardrobe choices and consider how they can make positive changes on a personal level. To find inspiration, people can look to the home seamstresses, professional dressmakers, and tailors of the 19th and early 20th centuries, who were masters of “green” wardrobe management. They have left behind a wealth of information in publications and surviving garments that demonstrate both their creativity and their frugality. The Fashion Archives and Museum at Shippensburg University features garments from ballrooms to discos and has loaned costumes for the Phillips Museum spring exhibition, “Ingrained: Celebrating Pennsylvania’s Cultural Heritage.” The lecture is open to the public at no charge, and preregistration is not required. For more information, visit www.fandm.edu/phillips-museum or call 717-358-4428.

ervations are needed. The meal and program will be held in the Family Life Center, and attendees should use the entrance at the back of the church.
