Inside! Schreiber Announces New Minority-Directed Scholarship

SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954

VOL LXII • NO 2

On Jan. 15, the anniversary of the late Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday, one local organization announced its most recent effort to promote diversity and inclusion, ideals to which King dedicated much of his life. The Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, 625 Community Way, Lancaster, has established a scholarship that will benefit graduate stu-

dents from underrepresented backgrounds. Master’s-level students who have excelled in the field of speech-language pathology at Penn State University will be supported by the scholarship, and recipients will be offered externships at Schreiber, an option that the organization expects to help it recruit and hire more minority candidates for therapy positions. Girls on the Run Lancaster is unveiling a spring curriculum that can be used virtually or in person. Coaches are needed to help girls benefit from this developmental program.

Breaking Down Barriers: GOTR Adapts For Safety And Flexibility Schreiber Pediatric speech-language therapist Barb Miller worked with Markus Marks during a therapy session.

Program For Girls Seeks Coaches

arrie Johnson, executive director with Girls on the Run (GOTR) Lancaster, wants to make it clear that the program is open to all girls in the age groups it serves. “Any girl can participate,” said Johnson. “We want to remove all limitations, whether financial, physical, or emotional. We want to remove those so that any girl can benefit.” In accordance with that goal, the spring 2021 program has been changed to accommodate COVID-19 restrictions. “We’ve adapted our program to make it totally safe and flexible for girls and coaches,” explained program director Jennifer West, who noted that the organization allows participants to connect with their friends in person or virtually. new virtual curriculum was written to match in-person lessons, and the program has eliminated shared materials by providing each girl with her own journals, hand sanitizer,

“Any girl can participate,” said Johnson. “We want to remove all limitations, whether financial, physical, or emotional.” and a cinch sack for storage. Masking and social distancing in compliance with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines are followed. Team members meet in person when they can, at their school if possible, or in parks, at

churches, or in community buildings. West explained that if schools close, a virtual practice can be held, with the lesson presented virtually. West stated that what has not changed is the lesson content. GOTR’s goals are to promote good choices for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living among girls. “They still get the same great lessons about practicing empathy and standing up for themselves and others, and we still take part in a community impact project,” shared West. GOTR staff members are looking for places for students to meet and are also seeking volunteer team coaches, which are essential to the program. “It’s a unique mentoring opportunity,” said Johnson, who added that the girls who participate are not the only ones who benefit.

Jaime Santiago, executive director and founder of Restart Training Center Ministry (RTCM), first heard of Matt Stutzman from Matt’s cousin, Steve Stutzman. “(Steve) said, ‘Maybe you should have my cousin who is a professional archer (speak at your sportsman banquet).

According to Santiago, up to $20,000 worth of door prizes will be given away, and there will be grand prizes for both adults and children each evening. Grand prizes will be Mathews bows and children’s Wicked Ridge Rampage 360 crossbows. Other prizes and auction items will include a Ten Point Vapor RS470 Crossbow, a Ravin R29X crossbow, a muzzle loader, and a 6-foot-by-6-foot tower blind. Schreiber from pg 1 Schreiber president James DeBord has led the creation of several initiatives committed to reducing disparities in care and to fostering an organization that better reflects the diverse populations it serves. These include connecting with national associations representing professionals of color to expand its hiring pool, conducting outreach in local school districts to affirm the profes-

sional aspirations of young people, strengthening clinical affiliations with historically black colleges and universities, and drawing on job-training programs that are equipped to attract people of color into every department and to its management team. “Throughout our history, Schreiber has always tried to provide services to some of the most vulnerable children in our community,” DeBord said. “Our

mantra is we will serve every family who needs us, and we want every child we see to reach their fullest potential. But in the past - and even still today - we have not achieved the diversity in our field that would best benefit our clients. By endowing this graduate scholarship at Penn State, we are taking a long-overdue step to advance equitable access to training in outpatient pediatric therapy services, with the longterm goal of creating a pool of speech-language pathology experts that reflect the communities they serve.”

Penn State was selected as the educational partner because a large proportion of Schreiber’s practitioners holds degrees from Penn State’s program. “The college’s speech-language pathology program continues to pioneer interventions that are having a transformative effect on augmenting communication,” said Craig J. Newschaffer, Raymond E. and Erin Stuart Schultz Dean of Penn State’s College of Health and Human Development. “The Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development Educational

Submissions Sought For Mental Health Blog When it comes to mental health, sharing stories can help reduce stigma, provide support and offer answers. That’s the hope behind a new blog launched on Mental Health America of Lancaster County’s website. The organization created its new website, https://mhalancaster.org, in November 2020, and it launched the blog in January. “A lot of our website is education-based,” said Caryn Thompson, marketing coordinator for Mental Health America of Lancaster County. “ W hat we’re trying to do with the blog is complement that with personal stories. As far as mental health goes, it’s a topic that’s not just about facts and figures. We can tell you all the stats in the world, but that is not always going to get our point across. Sometimes, the experience of other people educates just as much.”

The blog is being written by in-house writers, including Thompson, but will also be open to community submissions. Categories include educational pieces from people including physicians and counselors, personal stories and a creative category. For this last category, Thompson emphasized that the blog could include a variety of submissions. “Not everybody connects with words,” she explained. “If somebody wants to send in art, like photography or paintings ... we’re OK with that, too.” Thompson already has five or six submissions for the blog and said that anyone who is interested in contributing can get help to get started. “We have a list of topics if you’re not sure what to write about,” she stated. “We can give you some prompt sentences to give you a boost as a way to start writing. You don’t have to keep going on

Neighbors Group Plans Meeting Women of all ages and preschool children are invited to attend Neighbors Sharing and Caring, a women’s ministry of Chiques Church, 4045 Sunnyside Road, Manheim, on Tuesday, March 2, from 9 to 10:45 a.m. A special section will be provided for those who wish to socially distance and/or wear masks. Christy Shenk will give a talk titled “Storing Up Treasure.” She will speak about shifting one’s mindset from obtaining earthly peace and

comfort to aligning one’s goals, thoughts and dreams with Jesus’ plan for his or her life. Christy, married to Andy, is a mother of three and a member of Chiques Church. She works as an ICU nurse at Hershey Medical Center. Classes are provided for children from infants to prekindergartners. Readers may contact Bonnie at 717361-2613 or Veronica at 717-626-7603 for more information and a copy of this year’s schedule.

that topic, but it might get your creative juices flowing.” Submissions will be vetted by the organization, and Thompson is hoping to post weekly to the blog. “ W hen you have people out there in the world telling their personal stories, that helps reduce the stigma surrounding mental health,” she remarked. “You can see that here is a human being who is living with this diagnosis,

but she is still going to work, still feeding her family, still contributing to society. These personal stories can help other people learn what it’s like to live with anxiety or to be bipolar, for example.” Thompson said the blog has a personal connection because she’s the mother of a 20-year-old son who has bipolar disorder. She started writing about her experiences as a parent when he was in middle school, and her writing was shared with other parents. “I know that personal stories can help other people,” she stated. “And if personal stories are engaging, people are more likely to read the educational information on our website and more likely to want to learn more.” For more information about submitting material to the blog, readers may contact Thompson at cthompson@mhalancaster.org.

GOTR from pg 1 “It changes a coach’s life,” she noted. West pointed out that coaches need not be runners. “Men, women, college students, and high school students (can be coaches),” said West, who added that having a heart to help girls grow up with self-esteem is key. “You have to have a desire to help the girls and have meaningful conversations,” explained West. “Be a positive role model, be silly, and play fun games - that’s what our coaches do.” West added that training materials for volunteer coaches are online and self-paced. “We provide the curriculum, all the materials, and support to get them set up for a successful season,” she stated. Johnson added that girls are especially in need of

GOTR programming during these unusual times. “Seventy-nine percent of our girls are experiencing feelings of loneliness and depression as a result of the pandemic,” said Johnson. “We need our coaches to lead now more than ever.” West agreed. “(The girls) need the social interaction with friends in a safe environment, and that’s what GOTR is,” she said. “GOTR is a safe space where girls can gather and truly belong,” Johnson stated. Registration for the spring season will open on Monday, March 1, and the season will begin on Monday, March 29. Readers who wish to register a girl or volunteer may visit www.gotrlancaster.org. Individuals with questions may email jwest@gotrlancaster.org.

Prima Theatre will present the most celebrated tunes of Sammy Davis Jr. and Frank Sinatra with two fresh takes: an on-the-move live performance and an on-demand concert. The on-demand concert will include stories of how the artists navigated the culture of their time and will offer insights into the power of prejudice, pop culture, and politics. Previously scheduled to be performed for a live audience, “Sammy & Sinatra” will be available beginning on Friday, March 12, as premi-

um content on PrimaNOW, the theater’s online video platform, at www.prima theatre.org/now. Access to PrimaNOW is available for a nominal fee, while free for Prima Partners (donors) and season subscribers with an access code provided by Prima via email. A new offering has also been added titled “Sammy & Sinatra On-The-Move.” Traveling in a classic car, performers will utilize the vintage vehicle as a backdrop to present amplified and upbeat musical selections from the

two crooners’ songbooks. Performances are available for March bookings at neighborhoods, homes, or businesses throughout Lancaster County, made possible by Michael’s Motor Cars and the Gunterberg Charitable Foundation. Booking for “Sammy & Sinatra On-The-Move” can be completed online, with available dates and additional information at www.prima theatre.org/sammy. Current dates include Fridays and Saturdays from Friday, March 5, through Saturday, March 20.

Over time, North has assembled a partner team that includes Daryl Leisey, Jerry Murray, Craig Schloneger and Brian Black. experience to help leaders and their organizations embrace abundant living within the framework of organizational life. She grew up in a family business of diversified holdings through which she learned team insights and decision-making and entrepreneurial skills that can be used to propel businesses forward. ESTATE PUBLIC AUCTION

As the pandemic and cold weather may cause Pennsylvanians to see their loved ones less often, Transforming Health partners will provide resources to promote important and meaningful acts of kindness. Together, WITF, Capital BlueCross, and WellSpan Health are offering free postcards as part of the “Fill PA With Love” cards of caring initiative, the next project in Transforming Health’s “Here With You” campaign. Anyone can request a postcard collection to write messages of encouragement to send to people that may feel alone this season. Neighbors are asked to help fight the winter blues and pandemic isolation by sending someone inspiring words of comfort and support. Transforming Health seeks to support residents who may have even less interaction with the outside world than normal. It has partnered with over 15 organizations, including local skilled-nursing facilities, shelters, and Meals on Wheels groups, to distribute postcards to people who could use some cheer. Over 1,800 postcards are pre-addressed to partner organizations in Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Lancaster, Lebanon, and York counties. Six bright postcard designs feature an unexpected heart shape in a natural setting. The initiative suggests participants customize each postcard and write a message of love, hope, community, and caring that would brighten the day of a fellow Pennsylvanian. The postcards are packaged in groups of three, with two postcards pre-addressed to partner organizations and one left blank for the participant

to send to he or she chooses. The staff of partner organizations will collect the postcards and hold them in a secure environment for 48 hours as a precaution against spreading the coronavirus. Then, they will distribute the “Fill PA With Love” cards of caring to their residents. All postcards are prestamped, so senders do not have to pay for postage. Participants may request from one to five collections, or up to 15 postcards total. Throughout the campaign, a map on the website tracks where the cards are sent. When participants request card collections, they can submit which zip code they will send their postcard to. Currently, the map has over 100 hearts pinned in Pennsylvania and will be updated at least once a week with new zip codes. Transforming Health launched the “Here With You” campaign in June 2020 in response to the ongoing mental and physical needs of navigating life in a pandemic. In December, it distributed 735 “Here With You for the Holidays” grab and go bags to children in Harrisburg through the Capital Area Head Start. On Saturday, March 20, the campaign will continue with “Spring Into Motion,” a free 13-week community challenge featuring a calendar of daily activities for each day of spring. In June, Transforming Health will announce its selection for the 2021 A Summer Read. “Fill PA With Love” cards of caring can be requested through the end of February. The request form and details for the Transforming Health “Here With You” campaign can be found at www.transforminghealth.org.

Resource Center Announces Partnership A Woman’s Concern, a local pregnancy resource center, has announced it is partnering with Pennsylvania statefunded organization Real Alternatives, whose mission is to deliver pregnancy and parenting support services throughout the state. This partnership not only allows A Woman’s Concern to receive reimbursement funding for many of the free services it offers, but it also allows the two organizations to advertise together to ensure all women have access to the free state-funded services available to them. For the past several years, the two charitable organizations have worked together to advertise these services on local billboards and buses. Services available through A Woman’s Concern include pregnancy testing, ultrasound scans, parenting classes, and help with baby items. COVID19 health and safety measures are in place.
