Dancing, music can chase winter blues away
BY JEFF FALKTired of the short, cold days?
Suffering from a touch of cabin fever? Have you got the winter blahs?
The Big, Big Jazz Band has the remedy. It involves tapping your feet, grooving to music, and leaving the house for a night out.
“People want to get out of the house. By this time, people are tired of snow. We’re giving people a night on the town if they want to come out,” said Al Kernc, publicity manager for
the Big, Big Jazz Band.
The Big, Big Jazz Band will present its 42nd annual Beat the Winter Blahs Ball on Friday, March 8, at the Lancaster Country Club, 1466 New Holland Pike, Lancaster. The music will start at 7:30 p.m., and the event involves a cash bar and a chef’s breakfast bar at 10:30 p.m.
“It’s a really nice atmosphere,” Kernc continued. “There are tables surrounding the dance floor. People sit and listen. When the band starts, people start dancing. We play a mix of
BY JEFF FALKIt explores and emphasizes the importance of human touch and human interaction. But what Bonnie Keller has discovered about baby cuddling is that it can be a symbiotic relationship.
Yes, baby cuddling is a real thing, and it’s as heartwarming as it sounds. A resident of Manheim Township and a retired private adoption agency director, Keller performs her fascinating volunteer work in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of Women & Babies Hospital, 690 Good Drive, Lancaster.
“Most of them are little wee ones,” said Keller of the babies she snuggles. “The littlest people you’ve ever seen, and they need help to grow. It’s very comforting to see them grow every week. It’s very satisfying seeing the flower open up.”
Keller is one of 60 volunteers who cuddle babies inside Women & Babies’ NICU - 52 women and eight men from all parts of Lancaster
County. The babies are also from everywhere in Lancaster County, infants as young as 22 weeks old and usually facing some type of health challenge.
Typically, the babies’ stays in the NICU range from seven days to four months.
“Human interaction is so important to development.”
“Some are premature and can’t fight off infections,” said Margi Bowers, nurse manager of Women & Babies’ NICU. “There is research that shows infants who receive human touch have more positive outcomes, like gaining weight faster. Evidence shows that human touch increases the likelihood of trusting relationships later in life.”
“It gives them a place in the world by looking into another person’s face,” said Keller. “Human
interaction is so important to development. Human interaction helps them to eat better and sleep better. If we can be there when mom and dad can’t, that’s great.”
“Sometimes mom is really sick,” said Bowers. “Giving birth isn’t easy. Some moms have other children at home or have to go back to work. Sometimes it’s teenage moms who have to go back to school. Moms and dads just aren’t here all the time.”
The NICU’s baby cuddling program has a waiting list that the hospital reviews once a year. Before they are accepted into the program, baby cuddlers undergo a thorough background check and training. They work in threehour shifts, and a baby cuddler is on duty at the NICU 24/7.
“We rock a lot of times,” said Keller. “We also do the classic rock back and forth while standing. The nurses swaddle the babies in blankets and cloth tightly, so they feel secure. They know someone is there. I hum songs to them, they lay on my chest, I’ll slightly

The cast and crew of Warwick Middle School’s “Schoolhouse Rock Live! Jr.” is made up of students who are relatively new to the genre of theater. But what they lack in experience they more than make up for with energy, enthusiasm and curiosity.

rub their foreheads or forearms. Sometimes they just need some warmth and to be hugged. Sometimes you get a smile, and it’s priceless.”
Keller has been a baby cuddler for 10 years. Over that time, she has learned to manage the emotional attachments that develop between herself and the infants.
“Wednesdays are the best part of my week,” said Keller of her 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. shift. “I end up coming out of there happy every time. I almost have a renewed outlook on life. Just feeling them and looking into their faces, that’s my reward.”
“You become temporarily emotionally attached,” Keller added.
“The day of discharge is a happy day. Sometimes I’ll walk down with them. I just wish them well. I care about each one from my heart. In my heart I tell them that they’ve got to fight to get through it.”
school are starting to make decisions for themselves,” said Justin Droegemueller, who, along with Allison Fund, is co-directing “Schoolhouse Rock Live! Jr.” “Some build their own characters on stage. We want to give them freedom. For some, it’s their first show; others have professional experience. It’s amazing to see them grow through the two years. Some are so reserved. Some go from being really introverted to the exact opposite. We want to make sure these kids get to try everything in middle school.”
Those budding artists and their support staff will perform “Schoolhouse Rock Live! Jr.” on Friday, March 1, at 7 p.m. and Saturday, March 2, at 1 p.m. in the auditorium of the Warwick Middle School, 401 Maple St., Lititz.
“It’s an educational show and there’s learning built into it,” said Droegemueller. “Our kids learn to articulate, to pronounce, to project. They also find friendship and acceptance in drama. They’re being exposed to drama at a high level right away. If they become broader, more well-rounded people, what more could you hope for?”
Warwick Middle School’s production of “Schoolhouse Rock Live!
Jr.” features a cast of 30 student actors and actresses, as well as a backstage crew of about 10 more students. There are also about 15 parent volunteers involved.
“On the days of the show, the energy with the cast is through the roof,” said Droegemueller. “They’re talking to everyone. There’s a buzz going on backstage. We try to get (the students) focused on the material, and they always rise to the occasion. Last year, we had two packed houses.”
The cast incluces eighth-graders Collin Rosebrook as Tom, Carter Geesaman as George, Jo Bender as Dori, Lydia Crowther as Shulie, Liv Campbell as Joe, Capri Shoemaker as Dina, Alex Kofroth as Elvis and Kayla Stuckey as Janet.
“I love that Shulie can be played as a light and bubbly personality,” said Lydia. “She matches me as a person really well. Being part of the show is so much fun. I think adults will remember the songs from their childhood and kids will think it’s all really amusing. We have worked hard to bring educational songs to life.”
Preparation for the performances has included three days of rehearsals per week for two months, or about 20 total rehearsals. Each week an enhancement
has been added - lights, sound, costumes and other technical elements - all leading up to the final dress rehearsal on the Thursday before the shows.
“I’ve done this show in the past and it’s a lot of fun,” said Fund. “We were looking at some things, and it jumped out at us. Warwick has such a strong arts program, as far as music goes. A lot of (students) have just a natural vocal ability. You just have to adapt and be flexible. It’s really an ensemble piece.”
The musical play is based on the 1970s “Schoolhouse Rock,” a collection of animated music videos created to present short lessons on English, math, history and geography to young learners.
“A lot of the songs you’ll remember,” said Droegemueller. “It’s Tom’s first day of teaching, and he’s trying to figure out how to be accepted. He draws on the old songs to be accepted. It’s a prop-heavy show. A lot of props are used to represent language.”
Tickets for “Schoolhouse Rock Live! Jr.” will be available on a presale basis on Thursday, Feb. 29, from 6 to 7 p.m. in the lobby of the Warwick Middle School auditorium, as well as at the door one hour prior to both performances.

the Beat the Winter Blahs Ball is the only whose proceeds will go back to the band.
“The proceeds go towards sustaining the band,” said Kernc. “You’ve got to keep it running. This is the one job we do to raise funds so we can play for other people. We make a little money and it goes into the music.”
A nonprofit, the 20-piece Big, Big Jazz Band will play three 45-minute sets featuring swing, jazz combos and sounds of the big band era. There is an admission fee associated with the ball, but everyone is invited and Lancaster Country Club memberships are not required to attend.
Kernc explained that the band’s other events raise money for fellow nonprofits.
“We do it for our patrons and followers,” said Kernc. “They’re just people from around Lancaster County who have followed the band for years. We have a pretty loyal following. Some I recognize and some I don’t. They’re just people who like the big band sound.”
“We help other charities in the Susquehanna Valley raise funds. We’re a human service agency that provides music,” he said.
The Big, Big Jazz Band is hoping to draw 150 to 200 attendees to the Beat the Winter Blahs Ball in order to raise $2,000 to $3,000 for the band’s operating expenses. Of the 10 fundraisers that the Big, Big Jazz Band will play in 2024,
Organized in 1968 as the Bob Troxell Big, Big Band, the Big, Big Jazz Band is made up of four trumpets, four trombones, five saxophones, a drum kit, a bass guitar and a piano. The band also features vocalist Mary Ann Garrett and is directed by Gary Peters. A host of other musicians serve as substitutes.
Troxell, who played trombone in the Penn State Blue Band while
working his way through college, entertained a lifelong love of music and passed it on to the next generation through his work with jazz bands at Lancaster Bible College and local high schools.
Troxell started the band as a way to give back to the local community, a mission that the Big, Big Jazz Band carries on today.
In 2002, the Bob Troxell Big, Big Jazz Band became the Big, Big Jazz Band.
“It’s a big band,” said Kernc, who plays lead trumpet. “We call it a ‘Big, Big Band,’ because it has a
big sound. We didn’t want it to be called ‘the Big Band.’ We wanted something bigger and better.”
“We always strive to sound like one instrument,” added Kernc. “We all just love to play, and we’ve all been playing for years. Some are music teachers, some are music instructors, and many are lifetime musicians. We’re people who have had music be a part of our lives.”
