egan Weiss, director of marketing and development for United Zion Retirement Community (UZRC), cannot contain her exuberance over the remodeling project the organization is preparing to undertake. “I am just so excited for this project,” she said. “It is going to be so great for the residents.” The project, scheduled to begin in March, will relocate the UZRC chapel from its present spot near the Lexington apartments and Lexington dining room to the current activity room just behind the reception area. “The change here is that the chapel will now be right in the heart of the home and right as you come in the main entrance,” Weiss explained. The construction will also include a porte cochere outside the reception area to provide shelter for those entering the building. “(The chapel) really gives residents and their families a space to gather as a community; to explore and feel comforted by their faith; to enjoy music, performances, and education talks,” said Weiss. The new chapel, which will seat about
“I am just so excited for this project.. It is going to be so great for the residents.” “Leadership and the board began discussing how we could best use the space this freed up as well as address the space concerns with the chapel,” she said, noting that the chapel is phase two of a two-year project that previously enlarged dining space for personal care and residential living. The current chapel was built 50 years ago, when the organization served only about half the 170 resi-
dents it does today. The renovations will offer a larger worship space and lobby improvements to cut down on drafts and discomfort when entering and exiting, but it will not change the footprint of the building. To accumulate the $1 million necessary to complete the project, UZRC has begun a fundraising campaign called Heart of the Home. UZRC is a Life Plan Community located at 722 Furnace Hills Pike, Lititz. The home’s history dates back more than 100 years to a time when a local family began taking in area residents in need in accordance with the family’s Christian faith. That faith is still in evidence today, according to UZRC resident Betty Pesce, who said, “The chapel is a place we can connect more intimately with our God, and at this time in our lives that connection and closeness with Christ becomes even more important.” Paul Risk Construction has been contracted to complete the project. Weiss credited current UZRC CEO Sue Verdegem with the vision for the project. “The fact that we had outgrown the chapel space has been discussed for at least the last couple years,” said Weiss, who referenced the need to complete a recent renovation to the health care area of the community before beginning this project.
For 2021, Dayspring Christian Academy has chosen the theme “Return to the Foundation: Reviving the Seed of Our Nation” for its 11th Remember America Speaker Series event. Dayspring has also chosen to change its presentation format from individual speakers to an in-depth interview between two well-known authors. “Our events have always had a strong spiritual foundation, but we really sensed that the Lord was taking the lid off that this year,” said Dayspring headmaster Mike Myers. “The focus will truly be on revival for America.” Remember America, which will feature author and radio host Eric Metaxas interviewing pastor and author Jonathan Cahn, will be held on Saturday, May 1, at the Lancaster County Convention Center. Tickets to the livestreamed event are available on a pay-what-you-can basis.

that pairs guests with a volunteer buddy for the evening, but this year looked a little different, said Joell Ketcham, event organizer. This year involved a two-night celebration, starting with a “Shine-Thru” drivethrough event on Feb. 11 at the LCBC Manheim Campus, 2392 Mount Joy Road. The following evening, a virtual Night to Shine was held to allow guests to celebrate in the comfort of their homes. “We had 195 guests registered for the event,” Ketcham remarked. “Each guest received a name tag that was taped to their vehicle, so we knew who was in there, as well as a swag bag that was filled with snacks and treats as they drove the designated route.” Throughout the route, guests
tume characters, including Minions, Elmo, and characters from “Frozen,” “Toy Story,” “Monsters, Inc.” and more. “Then they were announced on the red carpet, in their vehicles, by the (disc jockeys) from Fun 101.3,” Ketcham stated. “The guests were then presented with a crown or tiara.” At the end of the drivethrough, guests received a meal to prepare on Friday night to enjoy during the virtual portion of the celebration. “This was completely different than other years, but everything went beautifully, and the guests had so much fun,” Ketcham noted. “They loved that everyone greeted them by name.” The celebration continued on
Feb. 12 with an online party hosted by Tim and Demi Tebow. “We encouraged (everyone) to dress up however they liked and just have fun,” Ketcham explained. “Some set their tables and dressed up, some were served by their parents or caregivers, some sat at the computer, some sat in The Night to Shine “Shine-Thru” their living rooms.” Despite the changes featured a drive-through event for guests, including Becky Box, to that had to be made meet costume characters during this year, Ketcham said the celebration. she was happy to be able to provide a celebration for the our guests have missed out on so participants. “It was important for much due to COVID. “Due to the pandemic, the booster clubs don’t have as much money,” she said, adding that all the students in a cast would like T-shirts, but not every child’s family can afford one. “(Through ETB), the whole cast could (perform) community service, and they would all get T-shirts,” she said. Lapp added that she had spoken with teachers at both the Pequea Valley intermediate and high schools, who told her that students could complete service projects in small groups to comply with COVID-19 safety guidelines. Another goal of ETB will be to connect with area businesses. “We could tie the business partners in with an item, and (the business could put) their logo on it,” High said, adding that it is important for businesses to strengthen ties with the community at this time. “We could do a health bag with toothpaste, deodorant, and shampoo to remove the health barriers to education,” High said.

“(Schools) will tell us the items (that are needed) and the community service (to be completed).” He added that service projects need not be complicated. “It could be raking leaves for elderly people or shoveling snow,” he shared, adding that Koenig is working with teachers who have classroom needs and community service ideas in mind. Lapp added that the new focus will allow ETB to help many more students than they could with indi-
vidual grants. “If you had 100 kids who receive a needed educational item and 100 hours of community service was served, that goes hand in hand,” she said. ETB board members include, in addition to High and Lapp, Jack Herr, Jill Castor, and Lisa LandisBlowers. ETB has a website that offers information about the organization and shares opportunities to donate. Readers who would like to learn more may visit www.helpetb.org.

When Ease the Burden (ETB) was founded in 2019, the organization sought to help fill financial gaps for families throughout Lancaster County. In the few years since, however, ETB board members have decided to partner with educators in a pilot program to help area children. They formed a relationship with Pequea Valley School District (PVSD), working with Kathy Koenig, director of student services for PVSD. “We found that we had started to focus specifically on children as the group we were trying to help,” said Sean High, one of the founders of ETB. ETB board members plan to connect with other districts in the future. Along with adjusting the focus, the idea of giving back to the community will be part of ETB’s DNA. “We really wanted to emphasize community service,” High stated, noting that school staff members will organize community service activities in exchange for ETB funds. “So, you might have a thirdgrade teacher who would say, ‘Let’s take a Saturday afternoon to clean the park,’” explained High, who added that in return the class would receive an item that meets an educational need. When the recipient is an individual child, ETB will take steps to protect the anonymity of the student. Founder Mindy Lapp pointed to a school play as an example.

Dayspring from pg 1 Metaxas, the author of “Bonhoeffer,” “Amazing Grace,” and “Martin Luther,” is the host of the Eric Metaxas Radio Show and the creator of “Socrates in the City” events. Cahn is the author of “The Harbinger,” which compares the post-9/11 United States to ancient Israel, among other books. “(Cahn’s) books look at the biblical pattern the nations go through,” said Myers. “(The book of) Jeremiah (says that) ... God raises up or tears down (any nation) because of their alignment with His purposes or not.” Cahn is also the head of Hope of the World ministry, and he leads the Jerusalem Center/Beth Israel in Wayne, N.J. Dayspring events manager Lisa Becker said she believes the pair will present an important perspective.
“We are beginning to see the stirrings of an awakening, and we feel the Lord has presented us with this opportunity to breathe into that,” she shared, noting that as author of “If You Can Keep It,” which explores the roots of the republic, Metaxas has an understanding of the founding of America on biblical values. Becker said she is looking forward to hearing him interview Cahn, based on the historical perspective Cahn has presented. Becker said the interview format was a decision inspired by the Holy Spirit. A board, made up of parents of Dayspring students and supporters of Dayspring’s mission, prays yearly for inspiration for speakers. “We set our hearts for the Lord and seek Him,” said Becker. “The combination of these two speakers came
Luthercare from pg 3 selected and awarded their $5,000 prize. The winners are Heather Craig, a licensed practical nurse in the Luther Acres Healthcare Center, and Brenda Murphy, a licensed practical nurse in the Luther Acres Personal Care community. Both winners expressed shock and delight upon learning they were the recipients of the “Hero Getaway” prize. “There are so many people who deserve this,” said Murphy, who has worked at Luther Acres for five years. “Our team is amazing here, and our team is a family. They are wonderfully supportive, and I feel very lucky.”
Craig has worked at Luther Acres since 2018. Through the pandemic, she has navigated distance learning for her five children and picked up double shifts or extended hours when needed at the skilled nursing Healthcare Center. She noted that it has been challenging to work through the pandemic and lose beloved residents to COVID-19, but she has been inspired by the sense of teamwork and the staff’s concern for the residents and their families, in addition to their own families. Murphy and Craig both said they were still thinking about what they might do with the prize.
from one of our team members, and it was really divine inspiration.” Myers confirmed the importance of prayer to the foundation of the school and the nation. “Over the centuries many prayers have been prayed and many declarations decreed regarding the Gospel purpose for America,” he said. “We are going to renew that and make sure the rising generations understand our heritage, so we can continue in what we believe (is) God’s plan for America.” In addition to the interview, the presentation will include performances by the Dayspring chorus and a presentation by a select student orator. Tickets to the livestreamed portion of the event, which must be purchased by Friday, April 23, are available at www.dayspringchristian.com or by calling the school at 717-285-2000.

Carrie Johnson, executive director with Girls on the Run (GOTR) Lancaster, wants to make it clear that the program is open to all girls in the age groups it serves. “Any girl can participate,” said Johnson. “We want to remove all limitations, whether financial, physical, or emotional. We want to remove those so that any girl can benefit.” In accordance with that goal, the spring 2021 program has been changed to accommodate COVID19 restrictions. “We’ve adapted our program to make it totally safe and flexible for girls and coaches,” explained program director Jennifer West, who noted that the organization allows participants to connect with their friends in person or virtually. A new virtual curriculum was written to match in-person lessons, and the program has eliminated shared materials by providing

each girl with her own journals, hand sanitizer, and a cinch sack for storage. Masking and social distancing in compliance with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines are followed. Team members meet in person when they can, at their school if possible, or in parks, at churches, or in community buildings. West explained that if schools close, a virtual practice can be held, with the lesson presented virtually. West stated that what has not changed is the lesson content. GOTR’s goals are to promote good choices for a lifetime of selfrespect and healthy living among girls. “They still get the same great lessons about practicing empathy and standing up for themselves and others, and we still take part in a community impact project,” shared West. GOTR staff members are looking for places for students to meet and are also seeking volunteer team coaches, which are essential to the program. “It’s a unique mentoring opportunity,” said Johnson, who added that the girls who participate are not the only ones who benefit. “It changes a coach’s life,” she noted. West pointed out that coaches need not be runners. “Men, women, college students, and high school students (can be coaches),” said West, who added that having a heart to help girls grow up with self-esteem is key. “You have to have a desire to help the girls and have meaningful

conversations,” explained West. “Be a positive role model, be silly, and play fun games that’s what our coaches do.” West added that training materials for volunteer coaches are online and selfpaced. “We provide the curriculum, all the materials, and support to get them set up for a successful season,” she stated. Johnson added that girls are especially in need of GOTR programming during these unusual times. “Seventy-nine percent of our girls are experiencing feelings of loneliness and depression as a result of the pandemic,” said Johnson. “We need our coaches to lead now more than ever.” West agreed. “(The girls) need the social interaction with friends in a safe environment, and that’s what GOTR is,” she said. “GOTR is a safe space where girls can gather and truly belong,”
Girls on the Run Lancaster is unveiling a spring curriculum that can be used virtually or in person. Coaches are needed to help girls benefit from this developmental program.
Johnson stated. Registration for the spring season will open on Monday, March 1, and the season will begin on Monday, March 29. Readers who wish to register a girl or volunteer may visit www.gotrlancaster.org. Individuals with questions may email jwest@gotrlancaster.org.

Seminary Bestows Catalytic Church Award On ECC When Kevin Eshleman, lead pastor of Ephrata Community Church (ECC), first became a student at Evangelical Seminary in Myerstown in 2007, he was impressed with the caliber of the institution and the quality of the professors. “It’s a great place,” said Eshleman. “The professors are godly people who love the Lord and have dug deep into the Scriptures in their specific areas of expertise.” Eshleman wondered if there might be a way for the seminary to share the wisdom of its teachers with members of the community and church leaders who are looking to deepen their own knowledge of God. His answer, the creation of the Institute for Christian Learning (ICL) at ECC, resulted in Evangelical Seminary presenting the Catalytic Church Award to ECC at the end of 2020. The award would have typically been presented at the school’s fall banquet. But when the banquet was canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions, Ann Steel, Evangelical Seminary executive director of institutional advancement, traveled to ECC, 70 Clay School Road, Ephrata, to present the award in person. ICL was born of Eshleman asking the question, “How can we take these (professors), who are in a graduate setting, and actually bring some of their materials to a broader audience?” He noted that he was thinking that a number of area residents, ranging from local church
leaders looking for refinement to pastors who need refresher courses, might be interested in taking part. “We worked through the idea in 2019,” said Eshleman, who noted that the first launch of ICL attracted 90 students in two classes in a noncredit format. ICL has now offered classes in both live and livestreamed configurations for two semesters. Ann Steel (left), Evangelical Seminary “What we executive director of institutional learned was that advancement, presents the Catalytic people were very Church Award to Kevin Eshleman, lead much hungry for pastor of Ephrata Community Church (this knowledge),” (ECC). shared Eshleman, who credits Matt Swords, pastor of effort a “significant relationship and discipleship and young adults, with the opportunity for many people to implementing the plan for ICL. Mitzvah Moms Give Back BY CATHY MOLITORIS
R068694
Inspired by a desire to give back, two local moms have created a group to help others. Mitzvah Moms was created by Gina Krouse of Lampeter and Gena Harting of Strasburg in the fall of 2020. Initially, the pair focused on collecting items for the homeless, but they then shifted their mission to helping people affected by COVID-19. “COVID started hitting close to home,” Harting said. “We knew someone at our synagogue who got sick, so we put together a basket for them. Then, someone in my moms’ group was affected. We started tossing around the idea of creating a group called Mitzvah Moms because it sounded cute and also because we thought there might be other people who would like to do this with us.” The pair created a Facebook group and soon had almost 100 members. “Mitzvah” is a Hebrew word that means “good deed.” The friends use their Facebook group to create gift baskets to give to people affected by COVID-19. “The baskets include a new, soft blanket and self-care products to help with decongestion,” Krouse noted. “They also have snacks because everybody loves food. It’s a basket of comfort items. We wanted to focus on the comfort, warmth and support.” Baskets are catered to the individual, and all recipients are kept as confidential as possible, she stated, adding, “We ask for some basic information

about the person receiving the basket ... so they get a basket that really fits their needs and wants.” Mitzvah Moms took off quickly as word spread through the friends’ network as well as their synagogue, Shaarai Shomayim in Lancaster. “Our rabbi is involved with the Interfaith Coalition in Lancaster, and we asked him if he would consider spreading the word among other congregation leaders and passing names our way,” Krouse explained. The women said donations of items for baskets and monetary gifts have been overwhelming, and in fact, they currently have more donations than people to receive them. “It’s a good problem to have,” Harting stated. “We’re facing the challenge of trying to reach out and identify more people who would like a basket.” Harting and Krouse, who have four children among them and homeschool their kids, said Mitzvah Moms has offered a way to set an example for their families while also making a difference in their community. They have been pleasantly surprised by the number of people who have offered to help with their project. “The purpose for this goes way beyond our children and giving from ourselves,” Krouse said. “There are so many people out there who want to help and want to show their love for their community.” Although they are currently focused on the pandemic, the pair said they See Mitzvah Moms pg 9
