WHS Students To Stage “Hello, Dolly!” By Ann Mead Ash

As directors do with all spring musicals featuring high school casts, Deb Kline-Smith, director of Warwick High School’s upcoming musical production, looked for a show that would fit the talents of the student actors, but she was also looking for a show that would be lively. “I was looking for a fun and uplifting show,” said Kline-Smith. “It was time to do something happy and fun, and this show is a lot of fun.” Warwick High School (WHS) will present “Hello, Dolly!” at the school, 301 W. Orange St., Lititz, on Friday and Saturday, March 15 and 16, at 7:30 p.m. and on Sunday, March 17, at 2 p.m. “Hello, Dolly!” centers around lovable matchmaker Dolly Levi, played by Amelia Fair. The musical follows her return to New York to practice her matchmaking

and heal her own heart. Along the way, Dolly matches up Irene Molloy, played by Lauren Epps, with Cornelius Hackl, played by Caleb Goss, and Barnaby Tucker, played by Noah Johnson, with Minnie Fay, played by Elise White. Dolly also solves the romantic problems plaguing Ermengarde, played by Maddie Grisbacher, and Ambrose Kemper, played by Taylon Madison. In the end, Dolly provides Horace Vandergelder, played by Liam Blevins, with a suitable wife as well. The cast of 45 will also feature Stella Newman as Ernestina, Katie Bender as Mrs. Rose, Andrew McCracken as Rudolph, and Matt Soslow as Stanley. “This show has no controversial issues except love, which has been controversial since the beginning of time,” said Kline-Smith, with a chuckle, lauding her cast members as amazing. “They are excited about doing the show,” she See “Hello, Dolly!” pg 3

Homes Of Hope Program Opens House In Manheim By Ann Mead Ash

Sometimes genealogist Darvin Martin finds himself in the role of scientist. More specifically, Martin has found himself becoming well-versed in genetic science. He has developed an understanding of DNA and how it is passed from generation to generation. With the advent of basic genetic testing available through companies like Ancestry.com and 23andMe.com, a whole new aspect of genealogy has opened up. “There are huge benefits of DNA testing, but they lie in the deeper testing - not the basic ethnicity testing which can reveal relatives,” Martin said. “You can share family trees and see how See Conference pg 6

The group, which has been meeting since 1942, currently has approximately 25 members. One ongoing project is knitting and crocheting hats and scarves to be given to people in the Manheim area. This past year, the group worked with Manheim Central School District to provide a hat to every student enrolled in the backpack project. According to group president Nadine Mazingo, 798 hats were made in 2018; about 175 of them went to the backpack project, and the rest were distributed among six other Manheim-area projects, including the Manheim Central Food Pantry and Barons’ Closet. Group members also collect food donations for the Manheim Central Food Pantry. Other efforts have included purchasing coats to be included in the Blankets for Barons community project. The ladies were also involved in providing personal care kits for Lutheran World Relief. As part of this effort, they donated the needed items and then assembled the kits at a meeting. Erickson Grabs 2nd East PA Regional Title Saturday saw the team competition take place at both Leisure and Dutch Lanes with Warwick locking up the top seed with a field high 4555 qualifying pinfall through three regular games and six baker style games. The venue then shifted to Dutch Lanes for the rest of the team bracket where the Warriors lost 2-0 to eventual champion Wilson. “Personally, though a little disappointed for the kids that we didn’t win the regional championship, the main goal of qualifying for states was accomplished, stated Vital. “We have two weeks of serious practice ahead before we mix it up with the top 11 teams and individuals in the state. SWIMMING The 2019 District Three swimming and diving championships took place this past weekend at Cumberland Valley High School and while no Warwick swimmer earned gold, there were three events in which Warwick placed sixth or better. Oliver Lance accounted for two of those three with the girls 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams locking up other two. Lance’s meet began with a thirdplace finish in the 200 IM on Friday

with a time of 1:54.87, three seconds off the pace of second place finisher Chris Guilliano (1:51.90) of Daniel Boone. The second day of competition proved even better for Lance who swam a personal best 51.44 in the 100 backstroke to finish second behind Chambersburg’s Avery Barley (51.01). Meanwhile, Lydia Hocker, Morgan Stuhltrager, Isabel Miller, and Hannah Greenway came a fingertip away from securing a bronze medal, finishing Friday’s 200 freestyle relay in 1:38.61. Greenway

During the next meeting of the Lancaster Civil War Roundtable, local author and historian Mary Weigley will present “Kilpatrick’s Raid Around Atlanta, August 18 to 22, 1864. The meeting will be held on Thursday, March 14, at 6:30 p.m. at the Lititz Public Library, 651 Kissel Hill Road, Lititz. The raid was the third attempt by the Union cavalry to cut the communication and supply lines of the Confederate Army as part of the Atlanta Campaign. Focusing on official reports, diaries, and letters from participants and accounts written after the war, Weigley will tell the story of the 1862 raid, which featured Maj. Gen. Hugh Judson Kilpatrick, through the eyes of both Union and Confederate soldiers. Weigley is a native of Lebanon County and earned a Bachelor of Arts in American history from LaRoche College in Pittsburgh. She is a quilter and a freelance writer, and she has focused on genealogical research into her family tree. The program is free and open to the public. found herself in a frenzied dash for the wall with Wilson’s Shelby Kahn in the final leg but fell less than a second short as the lady Bulldog’s locked up third place with a time of 1:35.34, while Catherine Chen, Miller, Kendal Eby, and Maya Hartzler claimed sixth in the 400 with a time of 3:41.26. Just missing a spot on the podium in the 200 freestyle was Hartzler who finished ninth with a time of 1:52.53 as well as Chen who also finished ninth in the 100 freestyle, touching in 52.73.

Meatloaf once sang, “two out of three ain’t bad, and for Isaac Erickson those words rang true as the senior collected his second Eastern Pennsylvania Regional championship in three years this past weekend at Lancaster’s Leisure Lanes. Teammate Tony Lutz landed in seventh place while Ashley Sham reached the semifinals of the girls’ bracket before bowing out against Kiearra Saldi of Holy Cross. All three advance to the state championship in two weeks. Erickson entered as the number one seed after blowing through the qualifying round of five games with a 289, 226, 257, 206, and 277 to record a 1255 pinfall and earn a quarterfinal bye. Although, his semifinal matchup was anything but easy as he drew defending state champion Kolby Bennett from Cedar Crest. In that match, it all came down to the final frame as both bowlers went head to head through the first nine. “Isaac threw the last eight strikes in his semifinal match versus Kolby Bennett of Cedar Crest. Kolby matched Isaac until his last shot when he needed nine pins to win, and got six giving Isaac a 247-245 win, stated coach

Neal Vital. Erickson then out bowled Daniel Boone’s Alex Horton 220-190 to lock up his third Regional title. Sham, meanwhile, also locked up the top seed after rolling a 226, 254, 279, 263, and 202 for a 1224 and set a new state record along the way. According to Vital, her 1022 pinfall through the first four qualifying games beat the previous mark of 1000. Her semifinal matchup with Saldi was a tough one, though, as Sham rolled an impressive 247 but was eliminated anyway by Saldi’s equally impressive 267. Lutz’s path to states was a little more difficult as he had to battle through the opening round to make it into the quarterfinals. His 288, 203, 227, 206, 236 qualifying series of 1160 gave him the seventh seed and as such, Lutz faced a four man bowl off with Caden Mutchler (Danville), Aidan Dsouza (Wilson), and Cody Brunner (Middletown) which he won with a 238. “Tony Lutz bowled great all day, qualifying seventh to punch his ticket to states, noted Vital. “He defeated three bowlers in the first round of quad matches, before falling to Horton in the quarterfinals.

Driver Safety Program Slated in Lititz, said that regular contact with mentors and budget coaches is essential. “The financial circumstances of these families (call for) weekly guidance with the budget coach mentors,” said Thompson, who added that goals and expectations for the families are set by the coordinator as well as the budget coaches and mentors. Financial goals involve finding ways to save for the security deposit and first month’s rent on the family’s next apartment, but other types of goals are set as well. “(Goals may include) getting on track regarding doctors’ appointments or making sure transportation for everyone in the household is taken care of,” said Thompson. Thompson noted that the Warwick program has been in place for more than five years. Five families have lived in the current house, which was acquired for use in 2016. “We have had varied experiences (with families),” explained Thompson. “Sometimes people have run the course and may or may not be equipped to make the

furniture donated by other volunteers, create a decor that is both contemporary and comfortable. “It has really come together,” said Melone. To qualify, families must complete an intake assessment with a Homes of Hope coordinator. “(Candidates) must be families with children and typically (live) in the school district or an adjoining school district,” explained Melone, who added that referrals often come from the school district’s social worker. The family must have experienced homelessness, although qualifying families may be staying with family members. A typical stay in a Homes of Hope home lasts four to five months, although a family may stay six months under certain circumstances. Just as important as the physical home is the support that the occupying family will receive from trained mentors and budget coaches. Rick Thompson, who is a member of the Warwick Homes of Hope committee as a representative of St. James Catholic Church

jump to independence, but we have had some who made it.” He noted that homelessness is not usually the only issue facing families who take part in the program. He named health issues, transportation issues, and employment issues among the problems that the families must overcome. “The jobs of the mentors and budget coaches are admirable,” he said, adding that families that take part should always benefit from receiving education that they can transfer to future situations. The Warwick Homes of Hope committee currently has about a dozen participants representing nine churches. “Most are smaller churches, and this is their way of contributing to the housing needs of local people,” explained Thompson. Looking to Warwick’s program as a model, Melone hopes to see more churches represented on the Manheim committee. Readers who wish to help with the Manheim program may contact Melone at bill@manheimbic.org.

Homes Of Hope from pg 1 with Erisman Mennonite Church, connected to form a new committee. Fast forward to March of 2019, and Manheim now has a steering committee of four headed by Melone, as well as a home in the downtown area occupied by a family that has been approved for the Homes of Hope program. According to Melone, the committee came together with a focus on the need for affordable housing in the area and connected with Love INC, which currently oversees 10 Homes of Hope in eight Lancaster County communities. During the summer of 2018, a house became available in Manheim, and the committee signed a lease and enlisted volunteer help in preparing the home for a family. “People in the community joined together to help with decorating, and all the furniture has been donated,” said Melone, who noted that members of the sewing circle at Erisman Mennonite have donated comforters. The comforters, coupled with

Conference from pg 1 you connect.” There are some myths about genetic testing, however, and Martin hopes to dispel them during “The New DNA Reality: Forging the Path Between Discovery and Privacy,” the presentation he will give on Friday, March 29, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society (LMHS), 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, as

part of the 40th Lancaster Family History Conference. “Everyone assumes their DNA is private, but that’s not the case,” remarked Martin, conference committee chair. He explained that while a particular combination of DNA might be unique to a specific person, the components of those genes may be accessed through other avenues, as they come from their parents, who got their DNA from their respective parents, and so forth. “The way that we think about DNA is an illusion because nature does not work that way,” Martin said. During his presentation, Martin will discuss two recent cases in which DNA from genealogical

sites helped law enforcement officers trace and confirm the identity of perpetrators of crimes committed long ago. Additionally, Martin will address the concept of ethnicity and the uncertainty of genetic testing for ethnicity. “It’s a false assumption that you can quantify ethnicity. Ethnicity is not just genetics; it’s also history and culture,” Martin asserted. Martin explained that because of the way genes are randomly distributed, a pair of biological siblings might test as having genetic markers similar to people in completely different parts of the world. One way in which testing is helpful, however, is in men from Western European backgrounds. By tracing Y chromosomes, it is possible to see how surnames have changed over time. Martin related a story about two family groups in different states that discovered they share a Y chromosome and thus a common ancestor. It turned out that the last name of Carpenter was the English translation of the original German surname of Zimmerman. Martin’s presentation may be attended in person, or folks may watch it online live or at a later date. There will be an array of other presentations, seminars,

discussions, and field trips offered before and during the Lancaster Family History Conference. The conference will examine how legal records are a helpful resource for understanding the details of one’s ancestors’ lives. Pennsylvania has a collection of legal records starting as early as 300 years ago. Genealogist Judy G. Russell will present the keynote address, “No Person Shall Gallop Horses in the Streets: Using Court Records to Tell the Stories of Our Ancestors’ Lives,” on Saturday, March 30. Russell has worked as a reporter, writer, legal investigator, defense attorney, federal prosecutor, and law editor, along with as an adjunct faculty member at Rutgers Law School. During the week of the conference, from Tuesday, March 26, to March 30, registrants may use the LMHS library and archives free of charge. The March 30 sessions will take place at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. General registration will end on Wednesday, March 20. To register, readers may visit www.lmhs.org or call the LMHS at 717-393-9745. Registration for field trips and seminars is completed separately from the conference, but priority seating will be given to conference attendees.

What You Can Expect • A thorough assessment that will determine the underlying cause or causes of your pain. • A level of personal care with a “hands-on,” manual therapy approach, to relieve your pain. Most of our patients tell us they have not experienced this before. • Excellent results – accomplished by working together with your Doctor of Physical Therapy every visit. Most patients decrease or stop medication use, and get back to doing what they enjoy doing – walking, hobbies, travel, family activities, or sports.

What Our Patients Say “At the time of my initial consult at Hershey Orthopedic & Spine Rehab, I had been experiencing neck, shoulder, and arm pain for several months. The range of motion in my left arm and my upper body strength had decreased significantly. Following examination, my therapist outlined the physical problems that were present, and prescribed a program of manual therapy and focused exercise. Working with him and his team over the past several weeks, I have gained increased flexibility, improved strength and range of motion, and am free of pain in my arms, shoulders, and neck. Not only have my goals been achieved, they have been exceeded!”

* Local physician and professor of surgery “I had seen other health care practitioners for treatment for chronic low back pain and leg pain. They had tried numerous treatments on my back and it wasn’t getting any better. I scheduled an evaluation with Paul at Hershey Orthopedic & Spine Rehab, and based on his evaluation, he suggested I see an orthopedic surgeon to look at my hip. The surgeon felt that my hip was the problem and I needed a hip replacement. I underwent a hip replacement and did my rehab with Paul and his crew. I am now pain-free, so much stronger, walking normal, and back to golfing. I highly recommend Paul and the staff at Hershey Orthopedic & Spine Rehab – they are knowledgeable, professional, and I’m doing so well because of their attention.” * Mike – retired teacher, golfer.

Seedling Sale Serves A Dual Purpose

Watercolor Paintings from pg 1 The Art Gallery at United Zion Retirement Community (UZRC), 722 Furnace Hills Pike, Lititz, is featuring Lancaster County watercolor artist Brenda Blank as the United Zion Artist of the Month for March. The gallery will be open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. throughout March. Blank is inspired by Andrew Wyeth, who stated, “I paint my life,” and whom Blank admires for his ability to connect the mood and organic feel of his subject matter. Blank’s art is reflective of her childhood in rural Lancaster County, where she was fascinated by aged and weathered trees and the textures of streams and gardens. In her artwork, Blank focuses on items that may be overlooked, aiming to call out their purpose and meaning in daily life. She seeks to communicate her view that life is full of visual gifts

and special moments. Blank enjoys experimenting with a variety of techniques and says she relishes the challenge of finding the balance between control and allowing the picture to paint itself. Blank received her first award, an honorable mention, at Lancaster Museum of Art’s summer show in 2015. She has shown her work at various locations in downtown Lancaster, is a partner artist at a business in Lititz, and creates a variety of commissioned works. For more information on the UZRC Art Gallery, readers may contact Alyssa Wojcik at awojcik@uzrc.org.

The Lancaster County Conservation District (LCCD) is holding its 45th annual tree seedling sale. Orders for conifers, hardwoods, wildlife food sources, groundcover, and pollinator-friendly perennials will be accepted through Monday, March 11. The preordered and prepaid plants will be ready for pickup on Thursday, April 11, in the auditorium at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. “That’s the weekend before Easter,” remarked education coordinator Sallie Gregory. “Hopefully folks will consider purchasing (plants) to celebrate Easter and Earth Day, which is on April 22.” Gregory explained that conservation districts were created in response to the Dust Bowl, in which windstorms caused massive soil erosion in the Midwest in the early 1930s. Men and boys employed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) planted trees around the nation, including Pennsylvania, to reduce erosion, especially along streambanks. The first Earth Day was observed in 1970, and the LCCD launched its first tree seedling sale in

1974 to celebrate Earth Day and honor the CCC. “It combined the effort to make trees available to everybody and conserve soil and waterways,” Gregory shared. The tree sale has continued for nearly a half-century. It is the only fundraising event for the LCCD, which, as an annex to county government, receives some public funding as well as grants and private contributions. The funds are used to provide education and watershed programs, which are held in classrooms or on individual waterways where volunteers are working on stream cleanups, Gregory said. The education programs are available for teachers in kindergarten through grade 12, as well as college classes, and all lessons meet state standards for environment and ecology. LCCD also works with classes to perform stream studies, which assess the health of a waterway by cataloging and counting plant, insect, and fish life. There is a second, equally important reason for the seedling sale. “We’re making trees and other plants accessible for county residents to put in the soil to keep it in place so it doesn’t erode due to

wind or rain,” Gregory said. Many of the plants also serve dual purposes, whether it is providing food for people or wildlife or acting as windbreaks or Christmas trees. The sale organizers make sure they are offering as many native species as possible, and they work with area nurseries to get appropriate stock for the sale. New offerings this year include coralberry, which holds its bright berries through the start of winter, and three self-pollinating fruit trees: Montmorency sour cherry, Klondike white peach, and Coralstar peach. The majority of trees on the sale list are bare root stock that will be dipped in a root preservative gel so that buyers will not have to plant their purchases immediately. As the trees are seedlings, the sale is also offering tubes with stakes designed to protect young plants from stressors and potential damage from deer, moles, voles, and other creatures that would eat their roots or stems. To see a pictorial description list of all species and access an order form, readers may visit www.lancasterconservation.org. For more information or to request that an order form be mailed to them, folks may call the LCCD at 717-299-5361, ext. 5. Payment is due when orders are placed and must be sent to the LCCD. The office is located at the Farm and Home Center and is open from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays.

Local Masons will once again volunteer to bake 4,000 pies this year in support of the Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster. The spring and fall fruit pie sales generate approximately 40 percent of the center’s annual operating budget. Spring pie orders will be accepted through Wednesday, March 13, and will be available for pickup just in time for Easter on Wednesday, April 17, between 2 and 6 p.m. at various distribution points throughout Lancaster County, including Ephrata, Mount Joy, Elizabethtown, Quarryville, and Lancaster. Pies will be available fresh or frozen in peach crumb, apple crumb, and cherry crumb varieties; pumpkin and sugar-free apple pies will also be available. The Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster currently serves 30 children from Lancaster, York, and Chester counties, offering free Orton-Gillingham remediation for dyslexia. The center is a nonprofit organization supported through various fundraising events, including Easter and Thanksgiving pie sales, a walk in October, the Extraordinary Give, apple dumpling and chicken corn soup sales, and the sale of car wash coupons. The Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster is located in the Masonic Center of Lancaster County, 213 W. Chestnut St., Lancaster, whose members run many of the dyslexia

program’s fundraisers. For more than two decades, the Scottish Rite Masons, Northern Jurisdiction, have helped to lead the national effort to support children and their families as they overcome the obstacles of dyslexia through their financial support of 45 active centers in 13 states. Dyslexia is a neurologically based condition that affects language acquisition, processing, and decoding. Recent research suggests dyslexia affects up to 20 percent of the population, reported Children’s Dyslexia Center director Heather Hinkel. People with dyslexia typically have above-average intelligence, but they can struggle in a traditional academic setting. Those who do not receive help can suffer devastating personal consequences; Hinkel noted that dyslexia tops the list of reasons teenagers drop out of school. Dyslexia is treatable with remediation. Since 2002, the Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster has tutored more than 175 students with a dyslexic profile. The center serves children on a firstcome, first-served basis regardless of race, ethnicity, economic status, or religious affiliation. While there is no fee to the students served, it costs the center approximately $5,000 to tutor one child for one year. The center also certifies adults as tutors in Orton-Gillingham and each year offers four scholarships toward
