Warwick students to journey “Into the Woods”
BY JEFF FALKThe days are getting longer, and in auditoriums across the land talented young thespians are honing their skills to entertain their communities.
Lancaster County’s spring musical season is in full swing.
Warwick High School’s contribution to the local scholastic drama scene is “Into the Woods.”
It is a stage play that is not only engaging, but also tests the skills of Warwick’s aspiring performers.
“We did not pick this show because it’s easy,” said Jonathan Shoff, the play’s musical and vocal director. “It’s a challenge and our students are rising to the challenge. We want to do the story justice. I can’t wait to see the final product.”
“We try to pick shows that play to the strengths of the kids we have,” Shoff continued. “We have a lot of talent in class right now.”
Warwick will perform “Into the Woods” on Friday, March 15, at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, March 16, at 7:30 p.m.; and Sunday, March 17, at 2 p.m. in the auditorium of high school, 301 W. Orange St., Lititz. Tickets
can be purchased at the door on the days of the performances or in advance at www.showtix4u .com/event-details/81375.
“My hope is that (the students are) learning to work together as a team,” said Shoff. “What we can create as a team is bigger and more beautiful than we can alone. Sometimes we have to put aside our differences and learn to work together. I love seeing the joy of the students knowing they worked hard and achieved something. I also love seeing the joy of the audience.”
The 40-member cast features senior Piper Sobon as the witch, senior Carly Evans as Little Red Riding Hood, senior Lilly Walls as Cinderella, junior Luci Martinez as Rapunzel and junior Gannon Ziegler as Jack. The cast is supported by a pit of 25 musicians and a 15-member stage crew.
“‘Into the Woods,’ at first glance, seems to be a light, magical fairy tale,” said Piper. “Act Two begins, and it spins into a journey of tragedy and sorrow. When cast as the witch, most jump to the conclusion I’m playing the villain of the story. Even the other characters in the story do. The narrative encourages viewers
to consider the motivations and complexities of each character, challenging the traditional notion of a clear-cut villain.”
“During the performances, there will always be a mix of nerves and excitement,” said Shoff. “We want them to calm themselves. We tell them to relax and to not overthink things. We want them to channel that energy and not let it become a distraction. It’s all about communicating with the audience and reaching them in a meaningful way.”
Based on the book by James Lapine and featuring the music and lyrics of Stephen Sondheim, “Into the Woods” premiered on Broadway in 1987. Warwick’s work on the production began in December with a read-through of the book, and since then the student performers have spent multiple hours learning the lengthy score and exploring what motivates each character.
“The payoff is huge,” said Shoff. “That’s why we put in the work we do. The more work you put into it, the greater the payoff. The real goal is that the members of the audience leave the production a little better than they walked in because we gave them something to think about.”
BY JEFF FALKWild birds are free and colorful and interesting. Wild birds are also accessible, plentiful and unique.
The Lancaster County Bird Club (LCBC) exists to observe and document birds, preserve them and advocate for them.
For members of LCBC, birding is more than just a pastime; its a passion, a lifestyle.
“It becomes a way to get out and enjoy nature,” said LCBC president Ted Nichols. “Anyone can walk outside of their house, and in 15 minutes, youre going to see a bird. The fact that birds are there is something that
BY JEFF FALKInnovative nonprofits really deserve a lot of credit; they come up with some very creative ways to raise money. Take Good Samaritan Services and its upcoming Ephrata Eats outing as an example. It’s an event featuring food, drink and fellowship, all in the name of healthy housing and sound financial practices.
“People love eating good food for a good cause,” said Mandy Ramos, Good Samaritan Services’
director of community engagement. “It’s a wide variety of food, everything from savory to sweet. It’s not a fancy event. It’s held at your local brewing company. You’re probably going to run into someone you know. It’s a very light event. It’s a very social event. You’re going to have a chance to win things and help a local nonprofit. We really want to make it an event where everyone has a good time.”

makes birding fun. It’s not a hobby that requires a lot of money to get into. It can be done everywhere. The people who are into it as a hobby are welcoming, and they’re willing to mentor newcomers.”
An independent organization founded in 1937, LCBC is made up of over 350 dues-paying members who hail from every part of Lancaster County and beyond. They are from varying walks of life, occupations and backgrounds, and the only thing that they all share is a love of birds.
Meetings are conducted indoors and consist of the sharing of recent bird sightings, a 45-minute ornithology lecture and a question-and-answer session.
LCBC also sponsors more than 30 different outings or field trips - at least one every month - at a variety of locations in and around Lancaster County for observing and documenting birds. The meetings and many of the field trips are open to the public.
More than cute - a commitment
BY ANN MEAD ASH“There are so many things to consider when adopting a pet,” said Damon March, director of operations for Humane Pennsylvania, which oversees the Lancaster Center for Animal Life-Saving on Route 30 as well as the Freedom Center for Animal Life-Saving in Reading. “Those who have never been the primary caretaker, it’s difficult to see everything. We discourage people from making a snap decision.”

“Throw a dart at a map of Lancaster County, and every ZIP code is represented by our membership,” said Nichols. “But even beyond that, a large part of central Pennsylvania is represented by our membership. That’s the interesting thing about birding; it attracts people of all demographics and all ages. They’re people of a wide variety of occupations. It’s a general cross section of society as a whole. It’s a hobby that truly is open to everyone.”
LCBC meets at 7 p.m. on the second Thursday of every month from September through March at the North Museum of Nature and Science, 400 College Ave., Lancaster; in April, May and June at Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area visitors center, 100 Museum Road, Stevens; and in July and August at Lancaster Conservancy’s Climbers Run Nature Center, 226 Frogtown Road, Pequea.
“It’s a lot of what people want to make of it,” said Nichols. “Some people take photos, some record audio, some draw. For the most part, we observe birds through binoculars.”
“Checklisting is a big part of the hobby,” he continued, explaining checklisting is identifying and recording different species by sight or sound. “That data is recorded, and we keep it on account for the club. Some people have zero interest in keeping lists. They want to live in and enjoy the moment.”
There exist 10,000 species of birds worldwide, 355 of which have been observed in Lancaster County.
“We’re a club with a long history,” said Nichols. “But the focus of getting out and seeing birds remains the same. If you have an interest in birding, we’re here to cultivate that. Once you get involved, it doesn’t take long to see the regular birds in Lancaster County. Birding opens your eyes to the conservation measures in play.”

Different types of pets require different levels of care as do the individual pets, based on age and a variety of factors, and the commitment continues for up to 20 years depending on the pet. “I wish people would better manage the expectation that they will walk in and find a pet for them,” March pointed out. “Pets are not universal. They have wide-ranging personalities, and finding a good match for you is not always easy.”
To foster more successful pet ownership, Humane Pennsylvania seeks to counsel would-be pet owners with questions about lifestyle, time and interest in working with a pet, and expenses.
March noted that getting a puppy is probably the most challenging of pet adoptions, pointing out that those who like to travel spontaneously might do better with a lower-maintenance cat.
Training, both house training and behavior modification, is most important and time-consuming with puppies. “Housebreaking (is) a pretty major thing, but there are other things, and one of the most important is the general manners,” emphasized March, who noted that laying down house rules from the first day and enforcing them 24/7 is key. “When people return puppies, it’s because they underestimated how much work those general behaviors would be,” he said.
reasons for the behavior,” he noted.
Sometimes new pet owners are not prepared for the costs associated with the animal’s care and feeding.
Melissa Detrick, owner and administrator of Honey Brook Animal Hospital, said that knowing what is best to feed a particular animal is important, but that owners should also be prepared for the costs of first-year visits, which may include vaccinations, neutering, and preventatives. Pet-sitting and grooming expenses will come into play with certain types of pets, as well.
“My advice to pet owners, especially new pet owners, is multifaceted,” said Detrick. “Do the research before taking the leap.” Detrick pointed out that practicing preventive care combined with a balanced diet and maintaining a good relationship with the animal’s vet is all important. She also recommended considering pet insurance.
We encourage
“One of the bigger mistakes with a very young puppy is to delay the beginning of that training. As dogs mature, allowing behaviors to persist can lead to really undesirable behaviors such as barking or growling over food or treats.” March recommended working with a trainer in person, online, or by video. “That second set of eyes can give you valuable
According to March, when a relationship does not work out between a pet and an owner, the problem often lies with the owner’s perspective. “Most of the time it’s because the caretaker failed to manage expectations for the situation,” said March, who noted that owners may think that an experience with an animal will be similar to a past pet experience or a friend’s or relative’s pet experience. “That’s why relationships fail,” he noted.
Humane Pennsylvania formed in 2014 when the Humane Leagues of Lancaster and Berks County merged. Cats are housed at the Lancaster location, and dogs are sheltered at the Berks County facility.
24 E. Main St., Ephrata, on Tuesday, March 12, at 6 p.m. More than 10 northern Lancaster County restaurants will be there with their unique culinary offerings.
Those attending will be afforded an opportunity to vote for their favorite dishes.
There will also be music, giveaway drawings, other games and a direct appeal for Good Samaritan funding.
“One of our marketing aspects comes from when people see the restaurants who are going to be there,” said Ramos. “They know they’re going to have fun trying food they never tried before. The event is designed to bring in new people. We’re hoping a mix of marketing will get them there. But we also want our current donors there, those who already believe in the work we’re doing.”
“We love alliteration, and we live in Ephrata,” Ramos continued. “We wanted an event to showcase vendors. We assume our friends here in Ephrata like to eat.”
Ramos said Good Samaritan Services is hoping to attract 150 to 200 attendees to Ephrata Eats. It’s a turnout that would raise an estimated $50,000 of Good Samaritan Services’ multi-million-dollar oper -
ating budget.
“It’s a portion of what we need to run our nonprofit in Lancaster and Chester counties,” said Ramos. “We exist to help people move from crisis to stability. Housing is a big part of it, but it doesn’t end with housing. It’s individual case management. We have a case manager who can help you with all your needs to hit stability. (Clients) have an advocate who is helping them with everything. It addresses the whole person.”
Functioning under the motto “Restoring Hope, Transforming Lives,” Good Samaritan Services operates in five locationsPhoenixville, Coatesville, Kennett Square, Lancaster city and Ephrata. The nonprofit, which addresses homelessness and poverty issues, was founded in Phoenixville in 1999 and opened its Ephrata office in 2011.
“Over the last 13 years, our commitment in this community has been to helping our neighbors,” said Ramos. “We want everyone in our community to have a chance to live a great life. We know this community. That’s why we wanted to have this event in Ephrata. We’re passionate about it. That’s what keeps us going every day.”

Auditions set for “The Little Mermaid Jr.”
BY CATHY MOLITORISDo you want to be part of the world under the sea?
Students in grades three through 12 are invited to audition for “The Little Mermaid Jr.” The show will be presented in June by Manheim Performing Arts Community Theatre (MPACT). Auditions will be held on Saturday, March 30, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim.
“Participation is open to students from any school district, as this is a community organization,” said Charito Faulkner, MPACT director and board president. Performers will sign up for an audition timeslot and should come prepared with a 30- to 60-second song and a 30- to 60-second monologue.
Charito and her husband, Karl, formed MPACT after volunteering for an organization called iStage Performing Arts. “Around 2018, the owners had to dissolve the organization for personal reasons, and we approached them to take over the organization,” she recalled. “At the time, our son and daughter participated, and we couldn’t imagine letting it go since we had seen the profound impact it had on our own children and other children in the community.” The couple recruited other volunteers and rebranded to form the nonprofit MPACT.
The organization’s mission is simple: to create a platform where both performers and community can unite, fostering a shared love and appreciation for the art of theater. “All levels of performers are welcome to join as MPACT is where you go to learn and grow,” Charito said.
The organization currently rents space in a local church gym to practice, and performances are held at the Junction Center.
When she’s not at MPACT, Charito is an elementary school teacher. She indulges her love of performing, including a background in chorus, cheerleading, color guard and musical perfor-
mance, as a volunteer with MPACT. “The passion for performing has always been a part of me,” she said. “When our children expressed interest in theater, my husband and I naturally became volunteers. Karl taught me the intricacies of set building, and I couldn’t have undertaken this endeavor without his support.”
Along with roles for performers, students are encouraged to participate as a member of the crew for “The Little Mermaid Jr.” “There are chances to get involved backstage for students in grades seven through 12,” Charito stated. “The behind-thescenes efforts play a crucial
role in ensuring a smooth production.”
She hopes students will try out for the musical and encourages anyone who isn’t already a part of MPACT to consider joining.
“Engaging in the program brings joy, and we welcome individuals of all skill levels,” she said. “There’s always a place for you in MPACT. Many participants have expressed feeling like part of a family.”

Club plans bird-related program, field trips
The Lancaster County Bird Club (LCBC) has planned several programs, which are free and open to the public.
The LCBC will hold a meeting on Thursday, March 14, at 7 p.m. at the North Museum of Nature and Science, 400 College Ave., Lancaster.
Todd Underwood, a professor of biology at Kutztown University (KU), will present Migration Patterns and Overwintering Locations of Veeries in South America. Veeries are songbirds that breed in dense, moist forests of eastern North America and are easily recognized by their distinctive song. Using the latest tracking technology,
Underwood followed the migration of veeries from their breeding grounds to their overwintering sites in South America. The presentation will discuss patterns of veery migration and describe the overwintering locations and habitats of these birds in South America.
Underwood earned a Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Manitoba in Canada. At KU, he teaches courses on topics such as ornithology and animal behavior, and he studies the behavior and ecology of birds. For the past 25 years, his research has focused on host defenses against avian brood parasitism. Recently, he
began a long-term study of the ecology of veeries breeding at French Creek State Park. Christopher M. Heckscher from Delaware State University served as a co-author on this presentation.
For more information, call 717-856-3851 or 717-725-2717.
The LCBC will also offer two field trips in March. Preregistration by 6 p.m. the day before the trip is required.
On Saturday, March 9, John Lahr will lead a trip at Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area at 4:30 p.m. Participants will look for American woodcock and waterfowl. The main objective of the trip is to
hear or view the courtship display of the American woodcock. To learn more, contact Lahr at 717205-3030 or johnlahr@ gmail.com.
Derek Stoner will lead a trip along the Susquehanna River starting at Wrightsville on Saturday, March 16 at 1 p.m. Attendees will look for little and black-headed gulls and other river birds. For more details, contact Stoner at 484-723-3348 or derek stoner@hotmail.com.

Students invited to enter art contest
The Shapiro Administration invites all firstthrough sixth-grade students in Pennsylvania to enter the 2024 Lyme Art Contest by creating a short video or poster focusing on the theme “Protect. Check. Remove.” The annual contest aims to help students, Scout troops, and community youth programs learn how to prevent Lyme disease by educating them about ticks, including where these creatures live, how to prevent bites, and how to remove ticks that do bite.
Officials from the Departments of Health (DOH), Education (PDE), Environmental Protection (DEP), and Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) encourage young students to participate in the contest and help raise awareness of Lyme disease.
The deadline for entries is 5 p.m. on Friday, March 15. Contest information can be found at http:// tinyurl.com/Tickborne DiseaseArtContest24.
Finalists will be notified by mail and will be invited to an award ceremony at the state Capitol in May. In 2023, nine winners were recognized at a ceremony with representatives from DOH, PDE, and DCNR.
Pennsylvania has one of the highest annual counts of Lyme disease cases in the nation. Ticks are usually found in shrubs, weeds, leaf litter, and tall grasses, but can be found anywhere there is grass. When exploring outside, it is important to take the proper steps to lower one’s risk of getting bitten; these steps include covering exposed skin, wearing light colors to help detect ticks, and using an EPA-approved insect repellent. Use permethrin spray on shoes, clothes, and gear as an added protection before spending time outdoors.
