Peter’s Porch Active In Lititz By Ann Mead Ash

For at least five years, pastor Rodney Martin of Lititz Mennonite Church, church member Bev Knight, and several volunteers from the area have been opening Peter’s Porch to Lititz residents. Peter’s Porch offers breakfast, a children’s clothing bank, and a food pantry to those in need. “Anyone is welcome,” said Martin, who noted that everything at Peter’s Porch is free. Peter’s Porch, which is open every second Saturday of the month from

8 to 10 a.m., is a ministry of the church, which is located at the corner of Water and Front streets in Lititz. Peter’s Porch is not held in August because the second Saturday coincides with the Lititz Rotary Club Craft Show, and the church youth group uses the parking lot as a fundraiser. According to Knight, the breakfasts generally include scrambled eggs, pancakes, and muffins. Selections may also include bread pudding and baked oatmeal. “The cook

Small Cast BIG Message LBC Prepares To Stage “You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown” By Ann Mead Ash

“If I was getting the abuse Charlie Brown gets from friends and (his sister), Sally, I would not be as even keeled and tempered as he is,” shared David Felty. “I would be upset. (But Charlie Brown) stays the course and is true to his character and, in the end, even Lucy, his biggest nemesis, realizes that he is a great guy.” Felty is advising Lancaster Bible College (LBC) junior Cassidy Wray Martin, who is directing the production of “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.” The play will be staged in the Good

Program Provides Computers For Refugees Triple Play - GOTR Plans Multiple Activities By Dayna M. Reidenouer

“I really enjoy helping people with their English and helping them meet their personal and professional goals,” said Danny Gingrich, who works as an English as a Second Language (ESL) tutor at Alpha and Omega Community

Center (AOCC), 708 Wabank Road, Lancaster. In recent years, Gingrich’s desire to help others has expanded from English tutoring to matching individuals with computers. Gingrich noted that he uses a lot of websites that offer free grammar lessons in his tutoring sessions, and he thought it would be helpful for his students to practice on their own at home. However, with most of his students being refugees with limited incomes, buying computers was not an option for them. See Program pg 2

fundraising banquet on Friday, April 17; and the first GOTR summer camp program will be held from Monday, June 22, to Friday, June 26. Welcome back Dr. Lydia Baird

In 2017, Gingrich’s acquaintance Stu Metzler, who is comfortable refurbishing computers, picked up 10 computers from a Philadelphia law firm that had upgraded their devices. Metzler upgraded the computers to Windows 10, and Gingrich matched them with his students. “And that’s how we got started, Gingrich said. The new ministry of AOCC is called Computers for Refugees. Initially, the program benefited just individuals who received ESL tutoring services at AOCC. Then, Church World Service’s Lancaster division began referring clients. Computers for Refugees has also assisted individuals recommended by Intermediate Unit 13’s Refugee Center, Millersville University’s Migrant Education Program, the Literacy Council of LancasterLebanon, and the International Healthcare Professionals Program in Lancaster. Gingrich also provided information about the initiative to a consortium of ESL programs in Lancaster County. In the summer of 2018, Lancaster Mennonite School (LMS) donated 60 desktops, so Gingrich reached out to RiversEdge Ministry

Additional computers and peripherals have been donated since then. In 2019, Computers for Refugees gave away 96 desktops, 130 laptops, five tablets, and 11 printers. In January this year, 16 desktops, four laptops, and two printers found new homes. Several of the items went to Bethel AME Church, which is opening an afterschool tutoring program. The Lenovo desktop computers, mice, and keyboards were donated by the Boys and Girls Club of Lancaster, and the Lenovo monitors were passed on by a pharmaceutical company. “It was so special to give (Bethel AME) complete systems, Gingrich remarked. Gingrich created a simple application for people who desire to receive a computer. Recipients have included Nepali and Somali refugees, as well as Cuban doctors whose credentials did not transfer to the United States, so they have been working in warehouses. “Some families

Casts will include Seth Jerabek and Dan Martin as Charlie Brown, Melody Griffith and Tori Nicktern as Lucy, Britt Jarkowsky and Abigail Simiele as Sally, Brad Myer and Braden Krikke as Linus, Zach Fernback and Rachel Potter as Snoopy, and Miles Brouillette as Schroeder.

Peter’s Porch from pg 1 makes it all fresh, said Knight, who noted that Sauder’s Eggs donates 45 dozen eggs per month. Martin lauded the kitchen staff for their food and efficiency. “They are really amazing in the kitchen, he said. The clothing bank offers free children’s clothing from infant sizes through preteens. Anyone wishing to donate clothing may call the church at 717-626-8237. Martin stated that clothing that cannot be used by Peter’s Porch is donated to another local ministry. The only area of Peter’s Porch that requires qualification is the food pantry. Martin explained that the church takes part in a USDA program through the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank. Recipients must register annually by providing an estimated household income and a signature. A paper must be signed each month to signify that food was received. “In the foyer, there are volunteers who will have (the recipient’s name) in the computer, and they sign a paper saying they picked up (a bag of food). It’s a very easy process, said Martin. The church orders food from the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank website, and the food items are delivered to Lancaster on Thursdays. “We bag (food) on Thursday night, said Martin, who explained that each family that signs up receives one bag of food. If the family has five members or more, they may receive a second bag. “If we order fresh produce, the truck comes Saturday morning, said Martin, who added that fresh produce is also received from the Community Action Program in Lancaster. Weis Markets also provides frozen meat through the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank. “We could have

According to Felty, this particular show will be produced with rehearsals having been held only on Wednesday evenings and Saturdays. Martin noted that while all the shows staged at LBC are part of the educational process, as part of a class, this show has a deliberate focus on learning, so character development is a concentration of the effort. “We are hoping the students bring their own life to the character,â€? said Felty. “They don’t have to be the Charlie Brown or Lucy of the cartoon, and both casts don’t have to be like each other. (Each student) can find their own interpretation of the character.â€? The show will utilize costumes that suggest the characters and personify Snoopy the beagle, who will have dialogue and sing and tap dance. Felty, a professed “Peanutsâ€? fan, said he loves the show because it is simply fun. “It’s totally designed for children to enjoy ‌ (and it) is based on the actual cartoon. Even the songs come out of (the comic strip).â€? Martin agreed with Felty. “It’s super fun,â€? she said, adding, “My dad is really looking forward to this show.â€?
