Benefit auction to accentuate the value of art

An act of creation, art can be pleasing to the eye, the ear, the touch. Art can also create value, worth and appreciation.

Friendship Heart Gallery and Studio’s annual art benefit auction is a great many things to a great many people. But at its most basic level, the auction is about individuality, equality and value.

“Art is a really great way for Heart artists to express themselves,” said Leah Scheib, Friendship Heart Gallery’s manager. “Our mission is to celebrate their personalities, just get across to everyone that what they do is important. It gives all of our artists a voice, creatively, to dive into their most inner feelings and expressions.”

This year’s edition of Friendship Heart Gallery and Studio’s art benefit auction, the 21st, has been dubbed “Soaring Beyond Boundaries.” It will take place

on Thursday, March 21, at Grace Church, 501 W. Lincoln Ave., Lititz. The silent auction will begin at 6 p.m., and Friendship Heart Gallery and Studio will present a program featuring its artists at 7 p.m.

“Art is a really great way for Heart artists to express themselves.”

Individuals who cannot attend but would like to bid on the works of art can do so online at www .friendshipart.net/artauction.

Light refreshments will be served, and a giveaway drawing will be conducted. Everyone is welcome to attend, but tickets are required and preregistration at the previously mentioned website is encouraged.

“It’s a really fun night to showcase our abilities and talents,” said Scheib. “We’d like everyone to come out and support local arts.”

Friendship Heart Gallery and Studio is a day program designed to assist individuals with intellectual disabilities and autism. During the auction, 31 works - mostly paintings, but also some photographs - by program participants, known as Heart artists, will be made available for bids.

“Those who attend can meet the artists, talk to them and get to know them,” said Scheib. “The event has evolved into something special for these artists. It’s an opportunity for them to come together and engage with the public. That’s incredibly important for them. We try to get our artists into the community, to have interactions. This is one of the greatest events for that because it’s about our studio and them.”

Over 100 individuals, family, friends and members of the community are expected to attend the art benefit auction, and Friendship Heart Gallery and Studio is hoping to raise $30,000. All pro-

The Feathered Sanctuary, located at 562 Beechdale Road, Bird-in-Hand, is one of only a few exotic bird rescues in Pennsylvania. The relationship that exists between domesticated birds and people strikes at the heart of what the Feathered Sanctuary does.

“These birds are exotic,” said Sharon Shaub, the Feathered

Sanctuary’s manager. “Anybody can have a dog. Not everyone can have a bird. Dogs like everybody. A bird has to like you and you have to know how to take care of a bird. If they do, they’ll love you.”

Feathered Sanctuary is currently home to 60 exotic birds - parakeets, parrots, cockatoos, macaws and cockatiels. Many of them have been surrendered to the Feathered Sanctuary,

and most are waiting to be adopted by their forever homes.

“When the phone rings, we never know what kinds of friends we’re getting, where they’re from or what their circumstances are,” said Shaub. “Most of the time, people will call us and want to relinquish their birds. Sometimes owners go into the hospital and have no one to take care of them. Birds outlive their owners. Birds live a long time.”

“We’re all volunteers and we just love the birds,” added Shaub. “It’s not their fault they don’t have a home. We’ve made them our pets and our responsibility.”

For visitors, the atmosphere at the Feathered Sanctuary can be a little overwhelming at first. Coming from all directions, there’s energy and sounds and sights that can only be compared to a menagerie.

“It’s just fun,” said Shaub of the rescue’s indoor environment. “We let them out (of their cages) and everyone gets to come at you. It’s fun watching them. It’s

always interesting. They know what they’re saying. They’re not just imitating. They’re big and they’re beautiful.”

The Feathered Sanctuary is certainly a unique nonprofit. But like most nonprofits, it has a need for funds and volunteers.

“There are no other rescues around,” said Shaub. “I get calls from Connecticut and Baltimore, and the only (other) two I know of are in New Jersey. That’s why we stay open; we want to help (the birds). Birds are expensive. They have to have a good cage and good food. If you don’t feed them good food, you’re not going to have a healthy bird.”

Feathered Sanctuary was started by Pequea resident Lynne Rothweiler in the late 1990s. Before moving to its current location in December of 2023, the rescue experienced consistent growth and placed dozens of rescued birds in new homes.

“If you were interested in adopting a bird, you’d come here and look around,” said Shaub. “Hopefully one of the birds would pick you. You can’t make the birds

like you. That’s their prerogative. We want them to know the person when they go home with them. There are some people birds just love. They’re smart. They’re very smart.”

“Every animal should be rescued,” Shaub continued. “So many need homes now. There are too many animals out there. Exotic birds are good pets.”

Steps farmers can take to combat climate change

Climate change is a challenge the world must confront together. Although people from all walks of life may be affected by rising global temperatures, the impact on the agricultural sector figures to be especially significant.

Farmers have been on the front lines in the fight against climate change for decades. When storms strike and climate patterns shift, they must find ways to adapt or potentially lose their livelihoods. Farmers may explore the following strategies to help combat climate change.

- Curtail methane emissions. The European Environment Agency (EEA) notes that capturing methane from manure is one way for farmers to reduce agriculture-related greenhouse gas emissions. The California Climate and Agriculture Network notes

that more than half of the state’s agricultural emissions come from livestock in the form of methane. The nonprofit organization Foodwise reports that holistic, pasture-based livestock management utilizing practices like rotational grazing can help mitigate methane emissions from livestock.

- Use fertilizers efficiently. The EEA recommends efficient use of fertilizers as another means to reduce agricultural greenhouse gas emissions. The National Institute of Food and Agriculture at the U.S. Department of Agriculture notes that the greatest efficiency typically comes from the first increment of added fertilizer/nutrients, with each additional increment thereafter resulting in lower efficiency. Making the most of initial applications can

save farmers money and reduce the impact on the environment.

- Participate in and help promote local farmers markets. Foodwise notes that food in the United States travels an average of 1,500 miles before it ends up on consumers’ plates. Transporting foods a great distance contributes to more greenhouse gas emissions. Farmers who can sell to local farmers markets can help reduce such emissions. Promoting those efforts via social media pages or other public platforms can increase consumer awareness of the availability of fresh, locally grown foods.

The challenges posed by climate change may be particular significant for farmers, but they may take various steps to overcome those challenges.

The basics of regenerative agriculture

Climate change poses a threat to various industries, not the least of which is the agricultural sector. In the years to come, farmers and agricultural organizations will need to continue to adapt and adjust, and one of the changes many farmers may consider, if they haven’t already, is a pivot to regenerative agriculture practices. Regenerative agriculture could have a profound impact on the world over the next half-century, so now may be a good time to gain an understanding of the practice.

What is regenerative agriculture?

Regenerative agriculture is a production system that focuses on reducing water usage and other inputs as part of a larger attempt to prevent land degradation and deforestation. According to the organization

Three

Time-tested

Green America, regenerative agriculture is designed to harness the power of

photosynthesis in plants to sequester carbon in the soil. The ability to do that can improve soil health, crop yields, water resilience, and nutrient density.

Why should people be interested in regenerative agriculture?

Green America notes that regenerative agriculture draws down atmospheric carbon dioxide. That’s a significant benefit, as Climate.gov, which is a product of various departments within the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), reports that adding more carbon dioxide to the environment is causing global temperatures to rise. In fact, observations from the NOAA Global Monitoring Laboratory in 2021 revealed that carbon dioxide alone was responsible for about two-thirds of the total heating influence of all human-produced greenhouse gases.

Another reason to con -

sider regenerative agriculture is its connection to topsoil. Green America reports that the world is on the cusp of running out of topsoil, which is vital to growing food. Regenerative agriculture rebuilds topsoil, which can lead to greater food security across the globe.

What are some regenerative agriculture practices?

Regenerative agriculture practices include the use of cover crops, a reduction in tilling, crop rotation, and spreading compost. Green America notes that regenerative agriculture practitioners also avoid the use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, and factory farming.

As the climate shift continues to challenge the agricultural sector, regenerative agriculture could help farmers and the larger industry to mitigate this problem.

Program to focus on “Women at War”

The Lititz Historical Foundation will welcome York County historian and author Dominish Miller, who will present “Women

Contrary to popular belief, women did fight in the American Civil War. They also infiltrated the United States Army in ear-

lier wars. Deborah Sampson served for 17 months in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War as Robert Shurtliff and Lucy Brewer served with the Marines aboard Old Ironsides as George Baker during the War of 1812.

Once a taboo topic, modern historians are finally shedding light on the role that female soldiers played in the Civil War and the women who made a living off of lying about their military service.

That’s what contributing to a community foundation is. Those folks wanted to dream beyond their lifetimes. This has always been a welcoming county. It’s always been a county

where green spaces are important. Some details have shifted, but we’re continuing to work toward a future where everyone in Lancaster County has an opportunity to thrive. It’s up to all of us to change the next 100 years.”

The first event celebrating LCCF’s centennial will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 27, at Pod 2 at Rock Lititz, 201 Rock Lititz Blvd. It’s being called Celebrating Creative Expression, and it will be an evening of creativity and celebration of the arts.

The event is free, and everyone is welcome.

“We know that if we invest in the arts, it’s really good for the local community,” said Schade. “It’s important for students to have access to the arts. It’s a strategic way to build a thriving community. It brings people together. Creative expression and the arts is one of the things that makes us human and connects us. It’s also one of the big parts of Lancaster County’s past, and we look forward to fostering it in the future.”

You can mix and mingle. It’s a really unique, engaging experience.”

Headquartered at 24 W. King St., Suite 201, Lancaster, LCCF was founded in 1924 by Martin Harnish. Today, LCCF handles $200 million in community assets and seeks to impact the quality of life in Lancaster County through improving the environment, neighborhoods, and health, education and youth programs, as well as access to culture and the arts.

In addition to light refreshments and music, Celebrating Creative Expression will feature poetry, collaborative art, a sound circle and a wearable collage called “Our Common Thread.” Also that evening, winners of LCCF’s Shaping Tomorrow grants, awards and scholarships will be announced.

About 100 to 150 people are expected to attend.

“It’s going to be a really vibrant two hours,” said Schade. “You can just walk around and choose your own adventure. You can take part in all of them, or you can sit back and watch.

“We care for the community’s endowment,” said Schade. “It’s a tool of philanthropy. Small gifts don’t stay small. The purpose of the community foundation is to manage the endowment, so we can continue to embolden the community through impactful programs. We work with community members to implement it. Thanks to many visionary founders, we’re in a position to create opportunities that can change the next 100 years.”

For the past three years, Uncharted Lancaster has held an annual real-life treasure hunt involving hundreds of people that

DIRECT CREMATION $1795

This year, the tradition will continue with the Raiders of the Golden Osprey Adventure. The treasure hunt will kick off on Saturday, April 6, promising a five-week expedition, weekly cash prizes and the chance to win a share of $3,250.

Players will explore Lancaster and Lebanon counties over five weeks as they race to uncover the legendary Golden Osprey, a fictional treasure hidden more than two millennia ago by ancient Phoenician explorers who discovered the Susquehanna River. There will be rewards

ceeds from the event will go toward supporting the gallery and studio and its functions, including utility carts, chairs, standing desks, additional furniture, art supplies, frames, ink and paper.

“We do other fundraisers, but this is the biggest one of the year for the gallery,” said Scheib. “It’s very important for us.”

Friendship Heart Gallery operates two studios, one at 1159 E. Oregon Road, Lititz, and the other at 118 N. Water St., Suite 101, Lancaster.

There are currently 66 Heart artists enrolled in Friendship Heart Gallery and Studio’s inspirational program. Heart artists work with instructors one or two days a week to create works of art and learn about the artistic process. The artists work in the creative mediums of painting, photography, pottery and weaving.

“We want to make the studio available for the Heart artists to attend and create their masterpieces,” said Scheib.

issued for first-, secondand third-place winners.

An honorable mention will go to the fourth-place team with the highest score on the leaderboard (and not among the first three Golden Osprey finders). All four teams will receive a full-size 3D printed commemorative Golden Osprey souvenir.

To play, participants must purchase a treasure diary; register a team beginning on Saturday, March 16; check Uncharted Lancaster’s website every Saturday at 9:30 a.m. for that week’s challenges; and solve the weekly riddles and decipher the clues to unlock segments of the treasure’s GPS coordinates.

The Raiders of the Golden Osprey Adven -

ture requires participants to utilize local history knowledge, puzzle-solving skills and the ability to navigate non-level terrain, making it a game of skill suitable for adventure enthusiasts of all ages.

Proceeds will benefit the HPT, with a portion from every treasure diary purchase going to the nonprofit. Funds going to HPT will contribute to its digital archiving project, which aims to scan the 160,000 artifact collection and preserve Lancaster County’s architectural heritage.

For more information and to purchase a treasure diary, visit www. unchartedlancaster.com.

Weekly clues will begin on April 6.

VisionCorps plans bowling event

VisionCorps will hold Eye Bowl 2024 on Thursday, March 28, from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Lancaster Elks Club 134, 219 N. Duke St., Lancaster. Tickets include duckpin bowling, heavy hors d’oeuvres, and one drink. There will also be a cash bar.

Duckpin bowling is similar to 10-pin bowling in that the duckpins are arranged in a triangle, but because the duckpins are shorter and lighter than the pins used in 10-pin bowling, it is harder to knock them down. The bowling balls are also smaller and lighter,

and they do not have finger holes.

The purpose of Eye Bowl 2024 is to help build awareness and support for Eye Drop 2024, VisionCorps’ annual fundraiser that supports vision rehabilitation services for individuals with impaired vision in Adams, Chester, Lancaster, Lebanon and York counties. This year’s Eye Drop will take place on Friday, June 7.

Free parking is available behind the Elks Club. Spots are limited. To register, visit https://bit.ly/ eyebowl2024.
