Having gained Silver Star status in all five literacies of the PA Forward Star Library program, Lititz Public Library director Ryan McCrory is well versed in the emphasis of the effort. “It’s part of (the PA Forward) push to make sure libraries are staying relevant and doing the things that are important to keep our communities at the forefront of opportunity and success,” explained McCrory. Now, McCrory said the library is eyeing gold status in the program, which he first learned of while working at a library in Berks County. After taking over the helm in Lititz in spring 2019, McCrory realized that the library was
well on its way to earning top status with PA Forward. “When I came here, I looked at the programming being done, and most of it was already speaking to these (required) literacies. It was a matter of making people aware of it,” he explained. The organization focuses on five key literacies - Basic, Information, Civic and Social, Health, and Financial - with a goal of assisting residents in the library’s service area in enhancing their quality of life. McCrory noted that basic literacy is simply the ability to read and write, while financial literacy is the ability to know how to budget and to do that in light of changes in how financial information is provided to individuals. “Health literacy is addressing health care issues such as navigating Medicare and health.gov,” said McCrory. “Civic and social literacy See Library pg 6

Worship Event from pg 1 and Drink, Let the Rivers Flow, a concert to be held in LBC’s Good Shepherd Chapel, 901 Eden Road, Lancaster, on Thursday, March 26, beginning at 7 p.m. The evening of worship is free. The concert will include solos by Hatridge, such as “Thirsty, and “If I Stand, along with the Ray Boltz song “Thank You. Hatridge will also solo, accompanied by the choir, on “Is He Worthy? Other choir selections will include “The Solid Rock, “Great Is Thy Faithfulness, and “All the Way My Savior Leads Me. The Calvary orchestra will play “Festival of Praise Medley, and Hatridge will lead the congregation on “My Eyes Are Dry and “Fairest Lord Jesus. Hatridge noted that the concert will conclude with a hymn sing and be followed by a time of refreshment and fellowship. Prior to coming to LBC, Hatridge lived near Bath, Maine, where he worked as a timber framer at the Shelter Institute. “This is career number two, said Hatridge, who grew up in southern Missouri. During the 13 years he worked as a timber framer, Hatridge also served as a volunteer music minister, running choir rehearsals at a nearby church. “About three and a half years ago, God called me to full-time ministry, said Hatridge, who began matriculating
through the LBC accelerated undergraduate online degree program. In December 2017, Hatridge completed his associate degree in biblical studies. Shortly thereafter, a decision was made to continue his education toward a worship arts degree at LBC. “We uprooted family and came down here, said Hatridge, who brought his wife, Jennifer, and three of his four children to Lancaster. A video feature in the concert will utilize Hatridge’s woodworking skills. “I do woodturning, and that video features me turning a wooden goblet, said Hatridge. “(The video will be) an encouragement to the Christian in the faith to plug into Christ so that His spirit overflows in our everyday life. Hatridge noted that members of the Calvary choir and orchestra responded positively when he proposed the idea of doing a worship concert together for his senior project. “There has been quite a bit of excitement, said a smiling Hatridge. “They have been very gracious in working with me through my educational endeavor. LBC is accredited through the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and the Association for Biblical Higher Education Commission on Accreditation. Make-A-Wish sent the Stiegaufs to Dave & Buster’s that evening and to the Franklin Institute for the day on Feb. 28 before the evening game. “We knew that Blake needed to wear a suit to the game Friday night, but that was it, Shelby said. “We had limo transportation to the rink, where he went into the player entrance and was escorted back to a guest locker room and had a full Flyers uniform with his name and number on a jersey. Blake suited up, announced the starting lineup in the locker room and led the team out of the tunnel onto the ice. He then took his official solo “rookie lap before taking a shot on goalie Carter Hart and warming up with the team. To top off the whole experience, Blake got to do a press interview with Giroux, who scored two goals in the Flyers’ win over the New York Rangers that night. “Make-A-Wish and the Flyers went so far above and beyond what we ever anticipated, remarked Shelby. “How do you ever say thank you for something like this?

“We told him to really think about it. Make-A-Wish makes an effort to say to kids, ‘This is the one time it’s OK to be selfish,’ Shelby shared. “I said that I kind of just want to sit down and have lunch with the Flyers and have pizza, recalled Blake. Blake, his parents, and younger brother Brent headed to Philadelphia for two full days of star treatment. “All we knew was that we were going to the practice arena, but we didn’t know any of the details, Shelby said. After watching the Flyers practice on Feb. 27, Blake suited up in his own practice uniform in the team locker room and took to the ice for a skills practice with Giroux. “After (Blake’s) practice, he came back in the locker room, got changed, and they took him up to the press room where the general manager signed him for a 24-hour contract with the Philadelphia Flyers, shared Shelby. Blake has been a member of the Manheim Central Ice Hockey Club since fourth grade, and Brian has been assistant coaching since Blake was in sixth grade. Shelby said that Blake’s oncologist made it clear that he would do everything in his power to make sure that Blake recovered and was ready to play in time for hockey season in the fall. Working together with other community entities is encouraged by PA Forward because it allows libraries to maximize program opportunities and resources offered to patrons. “We are partnering with community organizations and businesses that are already experts in (these areas),” explained McCrory. “The library is a trusted entity, so if you get experts together with the library, you provide a place for people to come and get the

Schreiber’s 38th annual gala will be held on Saturday, March 21, at Listrak’s headquarters, 100 W. Millport Road, Lititz. This year’s gala, with the theme “A Schreiber Big ‘80s Party,” will be offered with the support of many sponsors, including Presenting Sponsor Brittany’s Hope. Among the new features for this year’s gala are the new location, the first appearance by the Uptown Band, and the first use of text-to-give technology during a special portion of the live auction to raise money for the Schreiber Endowment Fund. The gala will also include formal introductions of this year’s Schreiber ambassador children. The stories among the ambassadors are all different, and their challenges are unique, but their families have one thing in common: They sought and received assistance from Schreiber. David Albino, who turned 5 in January, was born with cerebral palsy. He started services with Schreiber when he was an infant and now receives occupational, physical and speech-language therapies and attends Schreiber’s S.T.A.R.S. preschool. As a result of his work at Schreiber, David has learned to sit up, stand, speak and walk and continues to improve his ability to move independently with his walker and to speak more clearly and with more words to better communicate. He and his parents live in Lititz. Cooper Brubaker, who is 6 years old, was born with skeletal dysplasia, a rare form of dwarfism. He receives occupational therapy, working on building strength and endurance in his muscles. He has been coming to Schreiber for a little more than a year, and his mother Nicole said he has made tremendous progress. He and his parents live in Penn Township near Manheim. Jalaya Cooper, who turned 10 in January, was diagnosed with hypotonia, meaning low muscle tone, at the age of 7 months. Since then, she has received therapy to treat this condition and help her overcome a series of developmental delays. She receives all three therapies at Schreiber, working on fine motor skills in occupational therapy; core strength, balance and coordination in physical therapy; and improving See Gala pg 12

Gala from pg 7 her use of words, both in speaking and with a communication device. She and her parents live in Lancaster. Elle Haines, who will turn 6 in May, was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and receives all three therapy services at Schreiber, and she previously attended S.T.A.R.S. preschool. She works on a variety of skills at Schreiber, from climbing on playground equipment and hopping to language and social skills. Elle lives with her parents and her brother Harper in East Hempfield Township. Gabriel Morales, who turned 5 in November, came to Schreiber as a result of developmental delays that have affected his speech and left him with sensory processing issues. At Schreiber, he has learned how to speak more clearly so others can understand him.
