Lovin’ Lititz - One Cup At A Time Area Resident Offers Free Coffee To Visitors
ason Burkholder loves Lititz. “I live in Lititz,” said Burkholder. “I am a big proponent of downtown Lititz. I volunteer when I can with Venture Lititz, and I know a bunch of the shop owners.” Now Burkholder is looking to share his love of Lititz by inviting residents from the area and beyond to visit the town on the second Saturday of each month and enjoy a free cup of coffee … on him. “It occurred to me that we have Second Friday and maybe we can make Second Saturday a thing, (too),” said Burkholder, who ran his idea by Holly DeKarske, executive director of Venture Lititz, before moving forward. Next, Burkholder pitched the concept to Dosie Dough, a family-owned baking establishment at 45 S. Broad St., Lititz. “I reached out to Amy Lloyd at Dosie Dough and said, ‘What do you think?’ She thought it was a great idea,” he shared. The offer for

Burkholder is a Realtor with
Weichert Realtors, located in Manheim Township, but to him it seemed natural to promote the town where he lives. “The whole goal is to get people to downtown Lititz,” he said. “We have all these awesome shops, but if you’re just driving through in your car, you never see some of what they offer.” He encourages Lititz residents and others well beyond the borough limits to visit. “Come into town and grab a coffee and stick your head into some stores and see what you like,” said Burkholder, who lauded the Lititz Springs Park as the heart of the town, but noted the green space is only the beginning. “There’s so much to do,” he said. Burkholder has already gauged resident response to the effort. “People love it,” he said. “I plan to do it for this year, and I will continue for years to come.” Lititz resident Jason Burkholder displays a cup of coffee with the coffee cozy bearing the Second Saturday logo designed by Donna Felton (not pictured).
Seminary Bestows Catalytic Church Award On ECC
BY ANN MEAD ASH
On Feb. 3, Benton Webber shared several photos and newspaper articles on the Uncharted Lancaster group on Facebook. The photos showed a beautiful building, originally a farmhouse, located at 2201 Oregon Pike in Manheim Township. Landis House has been a fixture in Lancaster County for nearly 200 years, and its history has included occupants ranging from farm children to insurance executives. See Still Standing pg 4

When Kevin Eshleman, lead pastor of Ephrata Community Church (ECC), first became a student at Evangelical Seminary in Myerstown in 2007, he was impressed with the caliber of the institution and the quality of the professors. “It’s a great place,” said Eshleman. “The professors are godly people who love the Lord and have dug deep into the Scriptures in their specific areas of expertise.”
Eshleman wondered if there might be a way for the seminary to share the wisdom of its teachers with members of the community and church leaders who are looking to deepen their own knowledge of God. His answer, the creation of the Institute for Christian Learning (ICL) at ECC, resulted in Evangelical Seminary presenting the Catalytic Church Award to ECC at the end of 2020. The award would have typically been presented at the school’s See Seminary Bestows pg 5

For 35 years, Align Life Ministries has been holding an annual Walk Run for Life fundraiser. This year, the organization formerly known as Susquehanna Valley Pregnancy Services will hold an expanded event called Move for Life: Walk Run Plus. An in-person event will be held on Saturday, May 8, at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim. The fundraiser also features a virtual option for participation. “The in-person event will offer a 5K run and 1-mile walk simultaneously, starting at 9 a.m.,” said Heather Muncy, events director for Align Life Ministries. “If an individual or team prefers to participate virtually, they can choose their own safe, healthy, fun activity anytime between now and May 8.” For example, participants may choose to walk, run or even jump rope. The virtual component began last year, Muncy said, when the organization had to shift away from
an in-person fundraiser due to the pandemic. “Participants decided to jump rope, dunk basketballs, take family hikes, bicycle rides, Frisbee, golf, run, walk … the possibilities were endless,” she recalled. “We then realized the opportunity to expand our event in general to include a virtual - or ‘plus’ option.” Participants can decide the length and time of their activity, she explained, and then submit a photo or short video to show what they did. They can also plan to attend the in-person event. “Those who are participating virtually can join us on May 8 for a grand celebration and pick up their prizes at the same time,” Muncy stated. The in-person event will feature a family-friendly walk and chip-timed 5K run as well as free Kids’ Zones with live entertainment, interactive inflatables, face painting, snow cones and more. Move for Life is an important event for the organization, Muncy noted, adding that it not only helps further

Reaching Out To Support Grieving Parents Ministry Looks To Expand Offerings BY ANN MEAD ASH
BASIS, a Christian support group for grieving parents, is currently operating in six locations in Lebanon, Chester, and Lancaster counties and the state of Delaware. The decadesold ministry is part of HandiVangelism Ministries International in Ephrata. BASIS stands for Brothers And Sisters In Support, and the ministry provides resources, educational workshops, structured gatherings, and more for bereaved couples and single parents. In July of 2020, Dan Steinman, who is now a BASIS ministry assistant, retired from his job as a maintenance mechanic to become a representative for the ministry. “Never did I picture I would be doing anything like this when I retired,” said Dan. In fact, after Dan and his wife,
Phyllis, lost their son, Andy, in an auto accident four years ago, Dan did not initially attend BASIS meetings. But when Phyllis came home from meetings she attended in Akron, Dan had questions for her. “Nobody ever pictures losing a child,” stated Dan. Now, Dan wants to let those who have shared his experience of losing a child know that BASIS is there for them. “Your heart just goes out to people,” said Dan, who added that the loss of a child can lead to a shift in a parent’s social network. “Everyone is there at the beginning, but the friendship circle changes (in time),” explained Dan, who noted that BASIS brings grieving people together to walk beside each other. When Dan felt God calling him to join the ministry, he trained to become an associate. “(The training) changed
the way I looked at things,” he said, noting that he learned about different ways individuals handle grief. Dan acknowledged that because men and women often grieve differently, BASIS has styled the support group atmosphere to be comfortable for all involved. Speaking is not required, but those who wish to are encouraged to share their feelings. The pandemic and consequent mitigation efforts have spurred the ministry to expand its offerings. Citing rising suicide rates and COVID-19 losses, Dan noted, “Families need to connect, and we are looking to branch out to other churches throughout the county.” Dan is meeting with pastors and heads of ministries to find ways to bring the support BASIS offers to new places in Lancaster County and beyond.

The front yard of Landis House on Oregon Pike, which dates to 1728 has a varied history in Manheim Township.
“It was originally built by Hans Snavely or Snabley,” said Webber, who noted that spelling tends to be less fixed as one delves back into the history of a building. “It came into the Landis family by marriage.” A date stone indicates the original house was constructed in 1728, which Webber pointed out is the same year that Lancaster County was formed. “At some point there was either a fire or the house had to be expanded,” said The house is listed by the Webber, noting that the house was Historic Preservation rebuilt in the 1880s. How much of the Trust. present house is original is not clear.
Webber’s Facebook post included a number of photos and news articles that traced the history of the building. A circa 1899 photo shows several members of the Landis family in the front yard of the home. A 1930 photo provided by Lewis Bechtold shows two children and a dog in the same location. After the building served as a family home for several generations, one of the Landis family members turned the domicile into a family restaurant. “I found some newspaper articles about it, and it looked very charming,” said Webber of the family restaurant that closed by 1978. A 1982 newspaper article states that Provident Mutual Life Insurance of Philadelphia would occupy the building. In recent years, the building has housed TriStarr Staffing. “It is not in the same shape and configuration and context … but a lot of the historic architectural features were preserved,” said Webber. “(TriStarr has) done a great job with the interior. They kept a lot of the historic ambiance while preserving the outside.” Webber’s post pointed out the replicated roof, and the preserved hand pump, walkways, and porch.
Webber, a Lancaster County native who graduated from Manheim Township High School in 1979, first became interested in local history when attending a meeting about a Bridgeport intersection as a civil engineer. “I asked where the name Bridgeport came from, and nobody knew,” recalled Webber, who eventually learned from an East Lampeter Township supervisor that there had once been a steamship paddle wheel boat called the Lady Gay traversing the Conestoga River. “That blew my mind,” recalled Webber, who said the experience changed his life. “I have loved researching about the Conestoga River (since then),” said Webber. “The neat thing is trying to imagine what this area was like in the 1700s and 1800s, with woods as far as the eye could see,” Eventually, Manheim Township’s rich soil gave way to agricultural development and farms like the Landis House. “It’s neat how this tells part of that story,” said Webber. The Vintage Revival Market Spring Fever event, featuring more than 50 vendors, will be held at the Shops at Rockvale on Saturday, March 27. BY ANN MEAD ASH
Debbie Luther, market facilitator for the Vintage Revival Market, recently recalled the origins of the gathering. “A group of ladies used to meet in a Walmart parking lot to share vintage items found at yard sales and auctions,” said Luther, adding that she thinks those meetups began around 2012. Eventually the group began holding markets at an Akron church, and the event was held at that location for some time. Eventually, the group members became too busy to continue to run the market. Luther, who had been a vendor at the market with her own Dazzling Daisy Designs jewelry, became the facilitator, moving the market gatherings to a space in the Shops at Rockvale that once housed West Elm Outlet. The next Vintage Revival Market will be held at Suite 1079, 35 S. Willowdale Drive, Lancaster, on Saturday, March 27, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event is free to the public, and it will feature more than 50 vendors, live music, food trucks, and giveaways. Among the many vendors will be those selling vintage furniture, antiques, vintage glassware, Pyrex items, lighting, knick-knacks, vintage planters with plants, wallhangings, artwork, vintage clothing, and more. “ We have live music all day,” said Luther, who has lined up two musicians to per-
form at the Spring Fever event, which she plans to hold inside and outside the Rockvale venue. A coffee cart and a cupcake vendor will be located inside, and food trucks will also be on site. One food vendor will have beers, wines, and ciders. Food trucks will include those selling tacos, soft pretzels, breakfast sandwiches, chicken wings, and french fries. Luther noted that antiques and vintage items are differentiated by age. “Antiques are older than vintage,” said Luther. Rather than being 100 years old, vintage items are 30 or more years old. “I am not an expert on vintage, but it’s (mostly) from the ’50s, ’60s, ’70s,” said Luther. There is no admission fee to attend the market. Vendors pay a rental fee that Luther uses for live music for the event, advertising, and giveaways for attendees. Any funds that are left from the Spring Fever event will be donated to North Star Initiative, a local organization that fights human trafficking. North Star has created a sanctuary for female survivors of human trafficking called The Harbor. The Vintage Revival Market is located near the Disney Store behind the Cracker Barrel restaurant. The sign over the door reads “Rockvale Makers Market.” More information may be found by searching for “Vintage Revival Market ‘Spring Fever’” on Facebook.

ICL was born of Eshleman asking the question, “How can we take these (professors), who are in a graduate setting, and actually bring some of their materials to a broader audience?” He noted that he was thinking that a number of area residents, ranging from local church leaders looking for refinement to pastors who need refresher courses, might be interested in taking part. “We worked through the idea in 2019,” said Eshleman, who noted that the first launch of ICL attracted 90 students in two classes in a non-credit format. ICL has now offered classes in both live and livestreamed configurations for two semesters. “What we learned was that people were very much hungry for (this knowledge),”
shared Eshleman, who credits Matt Swords, pastor of discipleship and young adults, with implementing the plan for ICL. Eshleman added that it has not only been ECC members taking part in the classes, but interested learners from a number of area churches. “Many people approached me and thanked me for providing this for them,” he said. In response to the award, Eshleman expressed gratitude to the seminary for being willing to partner with the church. Calling the effort a “significant relationship and the opportunity for many people to grow in the Lord,” he wrote on the school’s website, “Thank you to Evangelical, its professors, and its leadership for the opportunity you’ve given us to partner with you.” Readers who would like to learn more about the seminary may visit https://evangelical .edu/about/about-evangelical. Over the past few months, the church has held several free meal distributions, including soup giveaways and a Christmas dinner. “We had a wonderful response to our Christmas takeout ham dinner, so we decided to hold it again at Easter,” Gray noted. In addition to the meal, the event includes a treat bag for children age 12 and under, which will be full of goodies. The bags will

include candy-filled plastic Easter eggs and a storybook about the meaning of Easter. “When you call to make your reservation for the ham dinner, please mention if you have children 12 and under so we may reserve treat bags for them,” Gray stated. After receiving the dinner, participants will exit down the church’s driveway, where various scenes depicting the final week of Jesus’ life will be displayed. “This ‘Drive to Calvary’ is an adaptation of the ‘Walk to Calvary’ we held in the church in years past,” Gray explained. Holding the event is a way for the church to give back to the communi-
love of Jesus,” she remarked. “Easter is the most important holiday for Christians, so it is a great time to hold an event like this to feed both the body and soul.”
Ruhl’s Church will hold a free Easter ham takeout dinner and “Drive to Calvary” on Saturday, March 27.

When COVID-19 restrictions shut down the state in March of 2020, VisionCorps, a nonprofit organization working to empower the blind and vision impaired, stopped providing services, but not for long. “We shut down services for a couple weeks, but we quickly realized our services were still needed out in the community,” said Chris Ament, vice president of rehabilitation and education with VisionCorps. To stay within the restrictions, Ament explained that VisionCorps developed a hybrid approach to service delivery. The hybrid programming is part virtual and part in-person. “You can’t safely teach someone how to cross the street over the computer,” noted Ament, who added that the organization was careful to protect all involved. “Our goal is to address safety with employees and the clients we serve,” he said. “For instance, a lot of our intakes are done either over the computer or the phone, but when someone needs direct attention, whether it’s our occupational therapy or mobility program, (it’s completed in person) with safety precautions taken.” Virtual programming in a variety of formats has been utilized by VisionCorps staff as well as associated
groups that receive services. “We have a lot of small groups meeting virtually,” said Ament, referring to the nearly 20 groups that discuss topics from mobility to books to service dogs. “We serve five counties, and each one has a support group and topics to discuss,” shared Ament. VisionCorps covers Lancaster, Chester, York, Adams, and Lebanon counties. VisionCorps vice president and chief development officer Megan Tomsheck said that one woman who receives services shared how the virtual connection has changed her life. “(She) said that the (situation) has improved her life because it is hard for her to get out of her home, but now she can participate virtually,” recalled Tomsheck. Ament noted that, overall, the changes have benefited clients and the organization. “The reality is that our service delivery model will be much stronger because we can do these things virtually,” he said, adding that virtual connections use time more efficiently. “We have a very creative team, and I think the opportunities are endless,” Ament said. In addition to offering virtual services to clients, Tomsheck said that presentations can be made to outside groups. “Part of our marketing, awareness, and public education is that we do theme presentations to service clubs, churches, or any group that would be interested in learning how we can help them,” said Tomsheck. “We realize a lot of groups are meeting online, so we have made ourselves available to do those presentations for them.” Tomsheck noted that online training is available for educational purposes
as well. “Chris’ team can do training for a retirement community that has several residents who are blind, and (the community’s) staff may not have training,” she said. “We can offer that support as well.” To learn more about VisionCorps, readers may visit www.visioncorps.net. Miranda Golden leads the VisionCorps book club online. Many of the organization’s services are available virtually to clients and others.

Mitzvah Moms Give Back BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Inspired by a desire to give back, two local moms have created a group to help others. Mitzvah Moms was created by Gina Krouse of Lampeter and Gena Harting of Strasburg in the fall of 2020. Initially, the pair focused on collecting items for the homeless, but they then shifted their mission to helping people affected by COVID-19. “COVID started hitting close to home,” Harting said. “ We knew someone at our synagogue who got sick, so we put together a basket for them. Then, someone in my moms’ group was affected. We started tossing around the idea of creating a group called Mitzvah Moms because it sounded cute and also because we thought there might be other people who would like to do this with us.” The pair created a Facebook group and soon had almost 100 members. “Mitzvah” is a Hebrew word that means “good deed.” The friends use their Facebook group to create gift baskets to give to people affected by COVID-19. “The baskets include a new,
soft blanket and self-care products to help with decongestion,” Krouse noted. “They also have snacks because everybody loves food. It’s a basket of comfort items. We wanted to focus on the comfort, warmth and support.” Baskets are catered to the individual, and all recipients are kept as confidential as possible, she stated, adding, “We ask for some basic information about the person receiving the basket ... so they get a basket that really fits their needs and wants.” Mitzvah Moms took off quickly as word spread through the friends’ network as well as their synagogue, Shaarai Shomayim in Lancaster. “Our rabbi is involved with the Interfaith Coalition in Lancaster, and we asked him if he would consider spreading the word among other congregation leaders and passing names our way,” Krouse explained. The women said donations of items for baskets and monetary gifts have been overwhelming, and in fact, they currently have more donations than people to receive them. “It’s a good problem to have,” Harting stated. “We’re
facing the challenge of trying to reach out and identify more people who would like a basket.” Harting and Krouse, who have four children among them and homeschool their kids, said Mitzvah Moms has offered a way to set an example for their families while also making a difference in their community. They have been pleasantly surprised by the number of people who have offered to help with their project. “The purpose for this goes way beyond our children and giving from ourselves,” Krouse said. “There are so many people out there who want to help and want to show their love
for their community.” Although they are currently focused on the pandemic, the pair said they plan to continue supporting others once COVID-19 is gone. “ We’re already brainstorming ideas for our next projects,” Harting noted. “We are looking at the longevity of Mitzvah Moms and continuing to give back.” The group is seeking both volunteers to help deliver baskets as well as nominations for recipients of baskets. Charity Seeks New Director Growing up, Randy Caldwell watched his father, Lloyd, go out of his way to help others. Inspired by his dad, Caldwell started an organization to give back to the community. Now, the Penryn man is the one who needs help. Caldwell created Lloyd’s Rides in 2016. The nonprofit organization gives rides on motorcycles, or in hot rods or other specialty vehicles to mentally challenged people and wounded warriors. Although the organization has been his focus for the past five years, Caldwell is facing mounting medical difficulties and is seeking someone to take over Lloyd’s Rides. “Right now, it’s just me in this organization,” he said. “My wife is a registered nurse, and she takes good care of me. I want to find somebody
who will take care of this organization because it’s becoming too much for me.” Caldwell, 72, said Lloyd’s Rides offers a sense of freedom and joy to participants and also lets them know they are not alone. “Lloyd’s Rides helps to build camaraderie and lets people know we care for them,” he explained. “I want to help.” Caldwell knows firsthand how it feels to ride, and he wants to pass that feeling on to others. “My dad used to take me for rides on his Harley when I was very little,” he recalled. “I’ve been riding motorcycles since I was 2 years old.” He emphasized that he will assist whoever takes over for him and will offer not only his knowledge of the organization, but also his connections to the community. “I have equipment. I have a

banner and a tent to put up at motorcycle rallies,” he said, noting that he recruits for his organization at events. “I have been going to local motorcycle breakfasts, and I’ll help the person who takes over to keep everything going.” Along with helping mentally challenged people and veterans, Caldwell’s organization is also focused on first responders. “A lot of first responders are veterans,” he stated. “I want to help the ones who are suffering and who are at risk for suicide.” Caldwell has a mission to combat post-traumatic stress disorder, he noted, and Lloyd’s Rides has expanded its services to offer computers for veterans who have this condition. Mary Caldwell, Randy’s wife of almost 50 years, noted that her husband has had a passion to give back since his youth, when medical problems prevented him from serving his country. “He didn’t qualify for military service, and because of that, he’s always had a desire to help people who have served and who are suffering because of their service,” she explained. “Charity has always been important to him.” For more information on Lloyd’s Rides, readers may visit www.lloydsrides.org or email Randy Caldwell at lloydsrides@gmail.com.

After Crystal Yunginger, who has a background in gerontology, moved to New Holland, she asked her mother-in-law, Joan Yunginger, director of social services with CrossNet Ministries, if there were memory cafes in the area. Joan answered, “That’s on our agenda.” In March of 2019, Crystal became a volunteer with ELANCO Dementia Friendly Community (DF), an outreach of Garden Spot Village (GSV). In June of 2019, the organization launched memory cafes to provide settings for individuals with dementia and their caregivers to enjoy social engagement and conversation about relevant topics in a stigma-free environment. host Dementia Friends sessions. In January, Crystal held her first Dementia Friends information session in a virtual format. The session covered key messages about dementia and how it affects individuals, among other topics. It ended with participants developing a plan involving ways to make the community more dementia friendly. To introduce the organization to community members, a pamphlet about Dementia Friendly Lancaster County and a volunteer guidelines booklet have been created. The booklet outlines the ways people can serve, including an advisory board, which acts as the organization’s eyes and ears in the community, and a working group, which furthers DFA initiatives and plans events. Crystal noted that people with dementia and caregivers will be essential to the group, but that representatives from businesses and organizations will be important as well. “We want to discuss ways businesses can be more dementia friendly to customers, (such as) creating an atmosphere that is conducive to a customer with dementia or supporting
