Raiders of the Golden Osprey Adventure is waiting to be discovered
BY JEFF FALKIt’s good, clean family fun. It’s problem solving. It’s a local expedition.
It’s one of the most creative fundraisers you’ll ever run across.
Adam Zurn calls it Raiders of the Golden Osprey Adventure. It’s his vision, his brainchild.
“It’s a little bit like ‘National Treasure’ meets Lancaster and Lebanon counties,” said Zurn.
“It’s a great chance to do something together and make a good memory.”
“I’m a child of the ‘80s and I grew up on films. I thought it would be cool to go on an adventure. As I got older, I realized I couldn’t go on adventures anymore. But I get just as much enjoyment from people going on my adventure, from playing my game.”
In association with the local history organization Uncharted Lancaster, Raiders of the Golden Osprey Adventure is a real-life treasure hunt.
After each group purchases a treasure diary, registered teams of three to six players decipher five weekly challenges and riddles that provide clues for unlocking
segments of the treasure’s GPS coordinates. It’s a contest that challenges participants’ knowledge of local history, their physical abilities to navigate different terrain and their problem-solving skills.
Each week the clues will be hidden in different parts of
Lancaster and Lebanon counties. Prizes will be awarded to the top four teams.
“It’s the only one I know of in Lancaster County,” said Zurn. “I’ve seen little afternoon treasure hunts here and there. But no one is doing a cash prize of this size. All expenses are being paid
by generous sponsors, and all sales of the treasure diaries go to nonprofits.”
The initial treasure clues for Raiders of the Golden Osprey Adventure will be released on Saturday, April 6, and teams are required to register before then. The clues will be released on each
BY JEFF FALKOver the last 300 years, Mennonites have evolved and diversified. But one of the constants that has remained is how their lifestyles reflect their beliefs.
Mennonite Life seeks to honor those beliefs, tell the story of the Mennonite sect in Lancaster County and share that lifestyle with others. It accomplishes that mission through archives, historical displays and welcoming arms.
“I think (‘Mennonite’ is) a little bit of both, theology and lifestyle,” said Abby Hershberger, Mennonite Life’s storyteller. “It depends on the Mennonite. (‘Mennonite’) can be a big umbrella for a lot of people. Mennonite life can be characterized by non-violence, non-conformity, a life based on the life of Jesus Christ and the teachings of Jesus Christ. Non-conformity means rejecting the status quo in different ways. It could be stepping away from certain technology. I’m a pacifist. I oppose violence in the world.”
Formerly the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society, the story of Mennonite Life is sprawled across two campuses, one at 2215 Millstream Road,

Lancaster, and the 1719 Herr House at 1849 Hans Herr Drive, Willow Street. The Mennonite Life campus features a visitor’s center, a collections building and a Biblical Tabernacle experience, while the historic 1719 Herr House is surrounded by the Lancaster Longhouse, a blacksmith shop, a visitor’s center, a pasture and horse barn and an orchard.
“It’s a big organization,” said Hershberger. “But we have a common goal to tell Mennonite life stories. We want people to know that we’re here and that Mennonite history is exciting. Mennonite Life is open to anyone who cares about Lancaster County history and Mennonite and Amish history.”
Mennonite Life offers tours, opportunities for field trips, educational programs, events and an extensive archives and library. Some 45,000 people from Lancaster County and beyond visit Mennonite Life each year.
“The visitor’s center gets a big range of groups,” said Hershberger. “It’s a lot of tourists. It’s a lot of bus groups. We just want to be this place that is welcoming to people who want to learn who Mennonites are.”
“It’s important to know how interconnected we all are,” she added. “We also care about preserving historical artifacts from the past. There’s value in preserving the past.”
It’s difficult to document how many Mennonites live locally, what percentage of Lancaster County’s total population they comprise and if indeed they are concentrated in the eastern and southern parts of the county. But there is no denying that Mennonites played a key role in the founding and development of Lancaster County.
“In 2021, the (organization’s) name was changed to Mennonite Life to simplify it and make it more welcoming to the community,” said Hershberger. “The Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society was founded in 1958. There was a pastor, Ira Landis, who came into possession of church documents, and (the founders) wanted to preserve local history. We still have a huge archive of things here. Mennonite Life is always going to be
interested in preserving history.”
“For me personally, I just think it’s good to know who our neighbors are,” added Hershberger. “Building bridges over big gaps and small gaps is important. It’s really important for me to know how Mennonite history is related to other people. It’s just good not to be afraid of differences.”

Vintage Candy Shop now open in Lancaster
Vintage Candy Shop, which had its original location in the Cabbage Hill neighborhood of Lancaster city, has moved to a much larger downtown spot near the square.
The candy shop, which debuted two years ago at 602 St. Joseph St., closed that 600-square-foot location on Aug. 4, 2023, and moved to a 4,000-squarefoot space at 38 W. King St., where it also has a concession window, an ice cream counter and a vending cafe.
The shop reopened in late February, and is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Hours may be extended on weekends as the weather warms and for First Fridays. An
official ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the grand opening was scheduled for March 27 at 11 a.m., sponsored by the Lancaster City Alliance.
At the new King Street shop, the Vintage Candy Shop has expanded its selection of more than 500 different kinds of candies, including candy necklaces, wax bottles, jawbreakers, candy buttons, caramels, chocolates, gummies, fruit slices and mints and nougats. There are also the classic Barley Toys, Peanut Butter Puffs and Chocolate Straws by Plantation Candy Co., a Pennsylvania-based candy manufacturer, as well as several hundred individually wrapped novelties,

including Mary Janes, Razzles, freeze-dried Space Candy, Wax Lips, SkyBars, Zagnut Bars and Zotz.
Fresh cotton candy is made on-site, and Taffy Lane offers mix-n-match salt water taffy that customers can select and weigh on an antique scale. The shop’s popular Stained Glass Art Cookie Kits will be available in both original sugar cookie and chocolate flavors in the shop. The kits make it easy and fun to create one-of-a kind edible works of art. Each kit includes individual mix packets, candies and cookie cutters. The ice cream counter serves hand-dipped locally made Kreider Farms ice cream in a variety of flavors with toppings that
include hot fudge and the classic chocolate shell. Hot drinks and slushies are served daily both inside and at the concession window, which also offers snacks, novelty candies, soft pretzels and muffins to walking customers.
The new shop also features a vending cafe offering a wide variety of meals, snacks, drinks and sandwiches. The cafe has seating at both rectangular and round tables, complete with vintage stools that are kid-friendly favorites. With self-serve microwave stations with an array of condiments, the vending cafe offers easy, quick affordable options for anyone on the go.

Aglow International sets retreat
Treasure hunt from pg 1
subsequent Saturday leading up to a climactic final race to the treasure on Saturday, May 4.
“It’s a great opportunity for everyone playing to give back to nonprofits,” said Zurn, a resident of Colemanville. “It makes me feel good. It gives the family something to do. They just have a lot of fun doing it. For a little money, it’s five weeks of good times. It’s a great chance to do something together and make a good memory. I think everyone walks away a winner.”
Zurn is hoping that 300 teams will accept the challenge presented by Raiders of the Golden Osprey Adventure, a total that would raise almost $6,000 for the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County and LancasterHistory.
“The team that won last year was a three-generation family,” said Zurn. “Others are just friends, sometimes they’re
groups from work, some are families. It’s a smattering of people. We’ve even had some people from out of state playing. Typically, the teams that do the best are made up of three to six people who are good at brainstorming and spitballing ideas.”
Raiders of the Golden Osprey Adventure marks Zurn’s fourth treasure hunt. It was preceded by last year’s Jewel of the Susquehanna and Find My Easter Egg in 2022.
“Each year has a theme,” said Zurn. “I like to highlight fascinating local history. It started during COVID when there was nothing to do, and it kind of just keeps growing, becoming a little better, a little more complex.”
