According to Chloe Elie, a member of the cast of the upcoming Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS) theater production, before choosing the spring show, director Dean Sauder bounced some ideas off his drama class students. Elie noted that when the winter musical show had to be canceled, Sauder wanted to choose a spring show that would showcase students’ individual talents. “(Sauder) took a script that was a lot of acting and added singing and dancing,” said Elie. “Everyone gets to shine in their own way (in this show).” See LMHS pg 4

Library Posts StoryWalk The Lititz Public Library has announced a new StoryWalk featuring “The Mixed-Up Truck” by Stephen Savage. The walk begins at Kissel Hill Road and Sixth Street and moves along the sidewalk around the library property. A StoryWalk combines two healthy activities, taking a walk and reading a book. It is a self-directed activity for people of all ages that encourages participants to read a children’s picture book in stages
while walking along a short path. Participants are encouraged to complete a simple activity at each page. StoryWalks promote literacy, physical activity, parental involvement, and ties to the community. The Warwick Township Board of Supervisors approved and assisted in the installation of the permanent StoryWalk fixtures. The library hopes to celebrate the full installation in June following some construction along Sixth Street.

different atmosphere,” she explained, adding that the first one will have a cartoonish feel. Student Sofia Masciale-Walmer noted that among the songs would be those originating in West Africa, Ireland, and Spain, along with a selection of lullabies. Katie Sina, who serves as choreographer for the production, said that basic costumes with accent pieces will designate different characters. “Another way we are making it fun is by adding pop culture anachronisms (to the timeless tales),” noted cast member Josiah Esch. Masciale-Walmer shared that the biggest challenge is the uncertainty that has surrounded COVID-19 cases and resulting restrictions, but she noted that students are facing the situation with a flexible attitude. “If something happens, we will try to make a way around it,” she said. “But we are putting a ton of hard work in, and if it doesn’t happen, we have to (be prepared) deal with it.” While there is no cost to attend one of the shows, tickets are required. “All the World’s a Stage,” a series of six folk tales from Italy, India, Spain, West Africa, Ireland, and Arabia, will be presented in the patio area of Millstream Hall with the audience in the parking lot between Millstream and the Rutt building on the school campus, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. Shows will be staged on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, April 29, 30, and May 1, at 7 p.m. and on Sunday, May 2, at 3 p.m. Attendees should bring lawn chairs and blankets, and they are welcome to bring picnic lunches to create their own dinner theater experience. To enhance the cultural experience, traditional songs and dances from around the world will be presented between the skits. Cast member Isaac Kraenbring reported that some students will be playing as many as six different characters, since each folktale is its own complete story. He described his part in one tale, noting that Sauder has encouraged students to develop each character they play as a distinct entity. “In the Irish folktale, I am the Great Bear of Orange,” he said, adding that the story is similar to that of “Beauty and the Beast.” “(Instead of objects), the people are transformed to animals, but when a princess loves the bear, he becomes a prince,” explained Kraenbring. Cast member Megan Esch said she enjoys the challenge of playing different characters. “Each skit has a
The fundraiser, the brainchild of Cub Scout Case Baccio, was organized to help send veterans, Purple Heart Warriors, and families of fallen heroes to the 2020 Warrior Weekend held in July. “(The tournament) went really well,” said Case, a member of Cub Scout Pack 93, who is now a fourth-grader at Bucher Elementary School. “We were able to raise more than $4,000, and there were quite a few people there.” Buoyed by the success of the 2020 event, Case, along with his mother, Ali Bucher, and friend Eric McCullough, are organizing this year’s event, to be held at Camp Mack on Sunday, May 16, rain or shine. Area residents who enjoy fishing are invited to take part in the event. The adult open and hero tournament, for those age 16 and older, will be held from 7 to 11 a.m. The adult hero category will include participants who are Purple Heart recipients or Gold Star family members. Lunch will be provided from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The children’s open and hero tournament will be held from 1 to 3
p.m. Child hero category members will include children of Purple Heart recipients or members of Gold Star families. This year, only 30 adult and 30 child participants will be registered. The 2020 tournaments attracted 45 participants. Winners were named in categories including biggest fish and largest number of fish caught. Bucher noted that one participant caught a large catfish, but McCullough added that the largest fish caught that day was a bass. According to Bucher, two goals of this year’s tournament are to attract more veterans and to double the amount that was raised last year. “We want to promote the community getting together for this,” she said. “We’d like to see some new people.” Individuals who are interested in registering for the event may visit www.eventbrite.com and search for “2nd Annual Clear Water for Heroes Fishing Tournament benefiting BS3G.” Readers who have questions may call 717-2245923 or 910-964-8594.

In February, when parts of Texas were hit by a fluke snowstorm, Aaron Fisher and David Lapp, CEOs of Blessings of Hope (BOH), a wholesale food bank located on Becker Road in Leola, decided to send Fisher to the greater Dallas-Fort Worth area with a tractor-trailer load of food and water through their Hands of Hope program. Although Fisher thought he would only be gone a few days, over the next two weeks, 12 tractor-trailer loads of food boxes containing fruit, vegetables, milk, yogurt, and other food items, along with skids of water, traveled from Leola to Texas. Fisher remained in the Lone Star State to oversee distribution. “Food and water was what they needed,” recalled Fisher, who added that trailers went to Houston and Austin as well. “They had no electric or water, so water was in high demand.” Outreaches like shipping 294,600 pounds of food to Texas are made possible by fundraisers like the iCare event BOH has planned for Friday, May 28, and Saturday, May 29, at 1850 Diamond Station Road, Ephrata. The outdoor event will begin at 5:30 p.m. on May 28 and at 6:30 a.m. on May 29. The May 28 fundraiser, which will be designed to appeal to members

To become an iCare sponsor or purchase tickets, which are necessary to attend the May 28 event, email admin@blessingsofhope.com or call 717-824-1227. Organizers described the May 29 event as a cross between a fair and a mud sale. Both 5K and 10K runs will be held beginning at 8 a.m., and a volleyball tournament will take place during the day. More information on registering for these competitions may be found at www.blessingsofhope.com. Four different auctions will take place
during the day, and food items will be available for purchase for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, along with a drivethrough food option. In the evening, a by-donation concert will be held. Blessings of Hope was started in 2006, when Lapp and Fisher began using a garage in Farmersville to store and redistribute food that was being wasted and that they knew could be used to feed people in Lancaster County and beyond. Eventually, the ministry developed relationships with more than 80 food producers and began acting as a bank to collect and redistribute food to pantries, outreaches, halfway houses, and ministries, along with Hands of Hope food box distributions.

She emphasized that this year’s event is especially important for the school, which serves students in prekindergarten through eighth grade. “We were not able to have our auction last year, but we raised over $162,000 in 2019,” she noted. “All proceeds go toward helping to make Christian education affordable for more families, purchasing new technology and funding essential building projects.” For more information on the event, as well as a full schedule of activities, visit www.manheimchristian.org or call the school office at 717-665-4300.

Bird-In-Hand Stage Sets Performances Bird-in-Hand Stage recently announced the return of “Ryan & Friends: Comedy Calamity,” a mix of wholesome comedy and musical entertainment for people of all ages featuring ventriloquist Ryan Bomgardner. The lighthearted program combines a comedy routine and song parodies in styles ranging from country to Broadway. Because of the pandemic, safety precautions have been set in place at the venue, including frequent cleaning and disinfecting of common areas and high-touch sur-
faces, hand sanitizer stations throughout the property, limited capacity for ticket sales and adjusted seating to space guests 6 feet apart. Masks are required for guests and staff members in common areas, and there are no-contact and low-contact procedures for guest interactions. There is also a ventilation system that draws in fresh air from outside “Ryan & Friends: Comedy Calamity” opened on April 3 and will run through Saturday, Oct. 9, on the Bird-inHand Stage. Upcoming

Gala from pg 6 The gala will feature a few musicians from the United Zion community. The event will help to raise money for the Heart of the Home project, which includes a new chapel auditorium. Those purchasing tickets will have a choice of filet mignon with mushroom demi-glace with herbed cous cous or vegetarian Southwestern stuffed peppers with black beans and rice. All meals come with a starter of a Caesar salad, a side of asparagus spears with lemon butter and a lemon mousse cake with raspberry sauce for dessert. The meals are part of United Zion’s Home Apron program. As such, meals will come with preparation instructions so each person can prepare his or her filet mignon to the temperature of his or her liking. Meals can be picked up on April 29 between 7:30 and 10 a.m. or between 3 and 6 p.m. The meals will be fully prepared but not ready-to-eat, so there about 10 minutes of cooking time is required. To purchase tickets by Thursday, April 22, visit www.uzrc.org /giving/heart. From April 22 at noon to Thursday, April 29, at 9 p.m., there will be an online silent auction to help raise money for the Heart of the Home project. The auction will feature artwork, food, gift cards, golf, hotel stays and more from local businesses. The full list is available at www.uzrc.org /giving/heart/silent-auction. The Heart of the Home Project will move the chapel to the heart of the United Zion campus. It will also include a porte-cochere. The previous chapel, which could seat approximately 50 residents, was built 50 years ago when United Zion served about half the residents it currently serves. The new chapel auditorium will seat 125 people with room for overflow for larger events. The gala and silent auction are part of the fundraising campaign for the Heart of the Home and will help fund the cost of the project, which is estimated at $1 million. The gala is made possible with the support of Bomberger’s; Buch Family of Funeral Homes; Johnson, Kendall & Johnson; and Lezzer Lumber.
