First Responders Bring Joy To Lititz
Manheim BIC Welcomes Taylor As Lead Pastor
By Ann Mead Ash
On April 1, the Lititz Borough Police Department took to its Facebook page with a special announcement. “With everyone stuck inside their homes right now, it’s kind of hard to even think about the next parade in Lititz, or is it?” the post asked. “We’re bringing the Parade to YOU!” the announcement crowed. On April 2, in response to COVID-19 restrictions, a new announcement included a few changes. The event’s name was changed to the “By appointment only Lititz first responders waving from a proper social distance in an outside environment vehicle procession.” Instead of the original route around the town, the police department asked Lititz Borough residents to send addresses in private messages to the police by 2 p.m. on April 3 so the vehicle procession could plan to drive by specific houses and wave that evening. The procession, which included about a dozen vehicles from the police department, Lititz Fire Company

Race Against Racism Goes Virtual The Race Against Racism, a fundraiser of the YWCA Lancaster that is believed to be the longest-running consecutive race against racism in the country, announced on March 20 that the event will transition to a virtual race for 2020. health and safety of runners and others. “Our mission must go on,” said Stacie Blake, chief executive officer of the YWCA Lancaster. “We are excited to provide a positive opportunity for our community to persevere and unite together virtually to take a stand against racism.” As a virtual race, the event technically began on March 25 at midnight and will run through Saturday, April 25, at 11:59 p.m. Those wishing to take part in the event are asked to run or walk 3.1 miles on a treadmill, trail, track, or road anytime before 11:59 p.m. on April 25. Those who complete the event will earn a commemorative T-shirt and reusable See Race Against Racism pg 3
In response to COVID-19 restrictions, runners who choose to participate in the Race Against Racism sponsored by the YWCA Lancaster may do so virtually. Participants may complete the 5K distance at any time until 11:59 p.m. on April 25.
Schools around the county have adjusted their educational methods as part of the response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and many students, such as those from Mount Calvary Christian School, are doing their learning from home.

First responders from the Lititz Borough Police Department, Lititz Fire Company No. 1, and Warwick Community Ambulance Association drove by specific addresses in Lititz on April 3, based on requests they received by private message on Facebook. About a dozen vehicles took part in the effort to spread joy in Lititz in response to the COVID-19 restrictions.
New Takes On Education You’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who hasn’t felt the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, and one of the areas experiencing a massive adjustment is the education system. Public school, private school, student, teacher, parent - no one is exempt from the far-reaching repercussions after a statewide mandate closed schools in mid-March. School administrative teams across Lancaster County have had to adjust quickly, all while keeping the safety of students and the community at the forefront of their decisions. School districts countywide have ramped up their online communication portals, offering educational resources, food assistance information, See Education pg 3

As churches and other institutions and organizations have adapted to these unprecedented times, the congregation of Manheim Brethren in Christ (BIC) Church, 54 N. Penryn Road, Manheim, had an unconventional introduction to new lead pastor Bryce Taylor. Bryce officially began as lead pastor at the church on March 12. With the state and nation in quarantine due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, this meant that Bryce’s installment service scheduled for March 15 was postponed indefinitely, and he delivered his first message to the church via livestream.

Food Assistance Resources Posted Support For Single Moms The Wolf Administration reminds Pennsylvanians of food assistance resources available and what actions it is taking to ensure access to food does not stop in spite of the COVID-19 mitigation efforts. This pandemic has caused many people and families to find that they are suddenly food insecure and require assistance. Pennsylvanians who need help feeding themselves or their family should find and contact their local food bank or pantry through Feeding Pennsylvania at www.feedingpa.org and HungerFree Pennsylvania at www.hungerfreepa.org. The Department of Human Services (DHS) will continue to process applications and benefit renewals for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Emergency SNAP applications can be expedited and issued in five days. Pennsylvanians can apply for SNAP online at www.compass.state.pa.us. DHS will continue to process application and renewal benefits, so people should continue to send in paperwork as usual. For anyone currently on SNAP who misses a deadline or who is unable to submit the paperwork or complete an interview or provide verifications for any reason during this emergency, DHS will ensure their SNAP benefit continues. DHS submitted a waiver request to the
federal Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) to ensure this continuity in benefits. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture has provided resources for Pennsylvanians to access emergency food assistance during COVID-19 mitigation, including locations of food banks and food pantries that are assisting individuals and families during this time. To ensure that food banks and community feeding organizations remain operable with healthy volunteers, the department provided guidance for ways to limit contact while providing their essential services. The Wolf Administration also asks anyone who is healthy and able to consider volunteering with a local food bank or registering for the State Emergency Registry of Volunteers in Pennsylvania, as this time is creating an incredible strain on charitable organizations’ efforts. United Way of Pennsylvania’s 211 website is also compiling a list of organizations that need volunteers or resources so their work can continue. Amidst Wolf’s continued mitigation efforts, including the statewide closure of non-life-sustaining businesses and the recent stay at home order issued for several Pennsylvania counties, the work being done by food banks and their volunteers is life-sustaining and will continue. The orders do
not prohibit food banks and their volunteers from offering food services, nor do they prohibit school districts from offering food services to children during the statewide school closure. Schools and school districts may continue to bring in essential employees involved in the preparation and distribution of meals for children. The emergency Feeding Task Force, which consists of state agencies, charitable food networks, food retailers, and other partners and stakeholders, is working to identify available resources and provide food and water to communities in need. This includes ensuring school-age children, older adults, and others experiencing food insecurity are provided with nourishing meals. Businesses that have resources to help feed and shelter Pennsylvanians in need are encouraged to fill out a survey to assist the task force as it looks to direct resources. Any Pennsylvanian who is suddenly in need of food should complete this survey so the task force can better understand where resources should be directed. Readers may visit the dedicated coronavirus webpage at www.dhs.pa.gov or www.agri culture.pa.gov for the most up-todate information regarding COVID-19.
Melanie Underhill In December last year, Melanie Underhill, a four-year veteran of single parenting, announced that she had created Single Moms, a support group for single mothers. The group started out meeting in person once a month at First Presbyterian Church of Strasburg, 101 S. Decatur St., Strasburg, but with the sudden changes to everyday life recently, meetings have been augmented. “I am holding our single moms support group online now every Friday on Zoom,” Underhill said. “The response … has been incredible. We are meant for community, and the moms are finding support and validation sharing their stories and struggles with those who
understand fully. It’s also wonderful to see friendships form and the sharing of child care, resources and information.” The formation of Single Moms could not have come at a more crucial time, Underhill noted. “In these uncertain times, single parents may feel more isolated and alone than ever,” Underhill explained. “Fear of losing their job or income may plague their thoughts, and limited food, basic necessities, child care, and emotional support may mount up to overwhelming anxiety. Often, too, a stressful event may trigger PTSD or bring up past trauma.” Parenting is difficult, but doing it alone when social and practical supports are no longer available can be especially challenging. Underhill offered some encouragement to single parents, saying, “Know that you are strong and resilient, having faced difficult times before and emerging wiser yet.” Taking care of one’s self can help parents stay strong, Underhill said. She noted that catching up on sleep (if children allow it, that is), exercising, and eating as well as possible are important. Parents can also find a few minutes each day to stop and reflect and then make a plan for the following day. Establishing a daily routine is helpful in eliminating surprises, Underhill suggested. She also recommended

taking a free class from online learning institutions and forming a child care co-op with other families in the neighborhood. Even with social distancing in place, there are ways that individuals can support single parents. “First and foremost, reach out to check in,” Underhill said. “Offer encouragement, support, and validation. Lack of a partner to bounce ideas off of and to dispel anxiety can further the feelings of isolation.” Practical ways to support a single parent including making a meal or leaving a bag of groceries on their doorstep, dropping off books or an activity bag for the children to do at home, and researching available benefits, programs, and aid that single parents may qualify for during this time. Underhill is working on a housing share program to help to reduce the housing need in the community. Her idea is to connect single mothers with each other so that two single mothers and their children can share one home. “This helps moms afford a better home in a better neighborhood, cover expenses, (provide) emotional support, (and share) child care and household burdens,” Underhill said. “The community needs to think outside of the box to address the needs of single parents, especially in these trying times.” For more information about Single Moms or to be added to the Zoom meeting, readers may email Underhill at melanies underhill@gmail.com.

high-quality academic experience even during this time of crisis. The statement went on to explain, “The school day is set up to be asynchronistic so that students can learn and study at their own pace in a schedule that meets the needs of their families. The school utilizes an online hub called Community Corner to provide a central location for communication and interaction. Hempfield School District also geared up to deliver online learning, with March 30 as its launch date. By implementing programs that were already in place within its system, the district hoped to expedite the process while expanding its format to incorporate a broader range of online options. “At Hempfield we have an application called Schoology, which allows teachers to post updates, assignments, discussions, videos, assessments, and more, explained secondary teacher Ryan Martin, noting that the district planned to transition to using the application virtually. “I believe strongly in the power of relationships in the school setting. time to interact only with each other, and numerous demands for in-home technology. Three of Bethany Eaby’s four children attend school in the Manheim Township School District. With the closure of schools in March, suddenly her fifth-grade, third-grade, and kindergarten students joined her and their youngest sibling at home. Tapping into her elementary education background, Eaby has implemented online learning initiatives and incorporated some of her own teaching strategies to keep her children engaged and productive. “I’m trying to be really creative with activities for the kids to do together and also trying to keep our days scheduled so that they know what to expect, elaborated Eaby, whose husband had also joined the picture by working from home. “We’ve made newspapers, art projects, and sewing, baking, and science experiments. Manheim Township has sent out resources for parents to engage in, which are not mandatory but extremely helpful, she added. Another creative outlet for communication has gathered momentum, as students nationwide have taken their artistic skills outside to “Chalk the Walk. The initiative includes covering sidewalks with uplifting messages and artwork to encourage those who pass by. Citizens have also rallied in an effort to minimize the physical distance and connect generations by organizing art and card collections that comply with sanitation protocols. The finished products are then delivered to senior communities that are currently unable to receive visitors. After the initial shock of school closures and social restrictions reverberated through local communities, the ripple effect of postponed sports programs, school trips, concerts, and other events has been felt far and wide. These aftershocks may not be over yet, which is why schools are taking every effort to support their students, families, and communities as needs arise. “Educators, students, coaches, and families are all grieving missed opportunities, explained Erica Hershock, who holds a Master of Education and has 15 years of experience in school counseling. “Leaders have quickly surveyed the current situation; staff are working around the clock to put flexible action plans in place. They are actively researching and implementing creative and equitable ways to connect and instruct all students. For those in education, the objectives haven’t changed even if the methodology has undergone drastic adjustments. Community members can be assured that those at the heart of education are as committed as ever to finding the best possible solutions in this uncharted territory.
Race Against Racism from pg 1 water bottle. The Kids’ Fun Run, for children age 12 and under, will also be held. Youngsters are asked to participate in a virtual 100-yard dash to earn a bandanna and ribbon. Adults and children who wish to participate are asked to register at https://ywcalancaster .org/raceagainstracism/ and download a virtual race bib. Those who had already registered for the race will be automatically transitioned to the virtual race. There is a discount for those age 14 and under who run, and the fee for the Kids’ Fun Run is nominal. The race encourages team participation, and there is a special link at the site for virtual race registration for team captains. The site suggests those wishing to form teams invite employees, friends, and family. Awards will be given out to the largest teams representing a number of categories, including place of worship and large and small businesses. Normally, the race, which traditionally begins in Musser Park, includes the annual Humanity Fest, a multicultural festival designed to celebrate the diversity of the local community. Since Humanity Fest cannot be held this year, organizers hope that virtual racers will encourage each other by posting photos and videos experiences on social media. They may
search for “Race Against Racism on Facebook and @RARLancaster on Instagram. People should utilize the hashtags #RARLancaster and #VirtualRace. “We can’t wait to see your creative videos and photos of how you are running your race, said Blake. The YWCA is planning to hold a community celebration on a date that has not been determined. Participants in the virtual race will be able to pick up their race swag at that event. Funds raised by the event are used to address racism issues, through efforts such as the YWCA Lancaster’s Social Justice and Advocacy programs, as well as supporting those who seek peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all. Blake said that she is grateful to the Lancaster community for rallying around the event. “We thank our generous sponsors and supporters for standing with us during this unprecedented time, she noted. The Lancaster YWCA has been a fixture in Lancaster since 1889. The organization provides services to help empower women, and it is also dedicated to eliminating racism and promoting peace, justice, and freedom. answers to frequently asked questions, and critical updates. While the game plan moving forward varies by educational institution, concern for the welfare of students presides across the board. For Mount Calvary Christian School (MCCS), a private institution in Elizabethtown, a brickand-mortar shutdown has caused education to morph into a completely different format. However, it hasn’t changed the school’s mission to “Pursue Christ and Prepare Students, which the administration and faculty are committed to fulfilling. Guided by an administrative team, the MCCS faculty members have spent countless hours transitioning their traditional classroom format into an online delivery. The new initiative rolled out effective March 23, allowing the entire student body to continue coursework online. “We feel it is important to challenge our students to keep moving academically, explained MCCS superintendent Dr. Daniel Sheard. “ We look at this as a new way to build student-teacher relationships. Though the plan of action would be re-evaluated in the event the school closure mandate is lifted, MCCS faculty members are prepared to complete the duration of the year via the new remote delivery if necessary. Lancaster County Christian School (LCCS) also went live with its online format on March 23, providing assigned coursework for students in kindergarten through 12th grade in five core courses along with optional enrichment activities. The LCCS executive team shared its intent in a press release, stating, “LCCS is committed to providing a
video conferencing program so that I can interact with my students in a live setting. Conestoga Valley (CV) schools also enacted measures to move toward online delivery, directing faculty to connect with families via applications such as Zoom, a virtual conferencing application, and establishing office hours to keep communication flowing. Addressing parents and students via the school’s website, CV superintendent Dr. David Zuilkoski stated, “I’ve always believed that a successful educational experience must include the schools, the family, and the community. I can say without question that CV should be proud of the way that all three parts have come together in this time of crisis. “Neither our teachers nor our students signed up for this type of learning, so we will maintain our growth mindset and appreciate a ‘yet’ mentality, Zuilkoski continued. “Throughout this process, all teachers will be providing feedback to ensure a more personalized learning (experience) occurs. In a show of solidarity, many communities have banded together to partner with schools and churches to provide pickup locations for bagged lunches for students. Local libraries have kickstarted operations that include sanitizing methods and drive-through services for books and resources. Countless organizations with online platforms are also stepping up to do their part, providing tutorials, virtual museum and zoo tours, and other educational resources free of charge. For parents, this new time of social distancing outside the home creates a uniquely opposite effect inside the home, as they must mesh the logistics of multiple adults working from home, siblings having extensive

Bryce Taylor (second from left), pictured with his wife, Christina, and the couple’s sons, began serving as lead pastor at Manheim Brethren in Christ (BIC) Church on March 12. Born in Sydney, Australia, Bryce spent his first 21 years living in New Zealand. He graduated from the Bible College of New Zealand and Elim Bible Institute & College located in Lima, N.Y. “I love basketball in America,” commented Bryce. “I really enjoy the coffee culture of Lancaster and now Manheim as well, praise God.” Bryce has served in multiple ministry and pastoral roles,
including serving as the young adult pastor at the Worship Center in Lancaster for nine years. He and his wife, Christina, live in Manheim with their seven sons and are anticipating the birth of another son in September. Stepping into another full-time official ministry position was not originally on his radar. “We took a bit of a step back and focused on family, which sounds funny
because it’s not like we weren’t focusing on family before that,” shared Bryce. While the family attended weekly worship services at Worship Center, their oldest sons were involved in - and very much enjoyed - youth group activities at Manheim BIC. Some of the Taylor children attend Doe Run Elementary School and Manheim Central Middle School, which meant that many of their friends were in the Manheim BIC youth group. One of their son’s friends mentioned that the church was looking for a pastor, and that was originally how Bryce and Christina heard about the open position. At first neither of them thought much of it, but as time went on Bryce said that they both felt compelled that he should go for it. “They are an amazing group of people that are committed to serving the community around them,” commented Bryce. “That’s what turned the key for us, seeing how they are really motivated to serving the community. Serving is the thing that always makes Christ relevant.” “Really, we fell in love with the church from a distance,” he added.

People’s mental health is of great concern to him during the current COVID-19 crisis. His desire for not only Manheim BIC but all of the congregations in the area and around the globe is for them to lean into what God has for them and represent Him with excellence. “My vision is that the church really sees what is in front of them; to be alive at a time like this we have so much opportunity to represent Christ well,” stated Bryce. “ And for parents of young children settling into a new routine at home with schools closed, Bryce and Christina are in the same spot. Their oldest son was already being homeschooled, which Bryce said has helped them to ease into things a bit. Bryce noted that parents should check in with each child to see what he or she is feeling is an important thing for parents to be doing. When their 7year-old son said that he was missing his friends, Bryce and Christina talked him through that. “Help them understand the feeling associated with whatever it is that’s going on,” said Bryce. “Then reaffirm that it’s OK.” “Our advice is to not put too much pressure on yourself,” Bryce said. “Let peace be something that other people experience through you.” To access past and future virtual services and sermons from Manheim BIC, interested individuals may visit https://manheim bic.org/sermons. “Abstract Spectrum” Art Exhibit Rescheduled “Abstract Spectrum,” 16-yearold Joseph James Roach’s first solo show, has been rescheduled. Originally set to open with a First Friday reception on April 3, the exhibit will now be unveiled at a reception on Friday, Aug. 7, from 5 to 9 p.m. at Mulberry Art Studios, 21 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster. The exhibit will continue throughout August. It was originally scheduled for April as April is Autism Awareness Month. Joseph, who has autism, struggled at school, trying to find his niche. In eighth grade, his art teacher Julia Hibshman at Manheim Central Middle School gave him greater freedom to express himself in art. What were at first simply scribbles soon developed into intricate and eye-catching abstract art pieces with the encouragement of Hibshman. A prolific artist, Joseph’s work grew rapidly into a collection of

The complete schedule for Lititz recCenter and recROC programs and classes will be available in mid-May. Summer adult leagues for men’s basketball and women’s volleyball will be offered. Team registration will be open through May, with the intent of playing a shortened league season if necessary. A youth summer recreation basketball program is also planned. Several events and special community programs have been rescheduled or postponed. The Parkinson’s Meet and Mingle with Legend of Lititz will be rescheduled to a fall date. The Boulder Bash at recROC is
postponed until a date to be determined. Currently, the following events are still scheduled, and registrations are still open. The opening of the all-new Lititz Springs Pool is tentatively slated for Saturday, May 23, though the date is subject to change. project and final permitting and inspections to allow public use. Lititz recCenter will continue to share updates as more information becomes available. Season pool passes are now available online and management recognizes that adjustments may be necessary. The fitness team at Lititz recCenter has created opportunities for community members to keep active and motivated toward their personal health and wellness. Fitness from a Distance is a set of online links, videos, tips, and resources free to access through the aforementioned website. Options are posted under Virtual and Distance Fitness there and also are posted on the “Lititz recCenter” Facebook page. Updates will be announced, and Lititz recCenter encourages readers to email staff.
Companies Partner Camp Invention To Provide Equipment Program Posted Safety Training A partnership between JLG Industries Inc. and Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) has resulted in enhanced future equipment training at the ABC Keystone Chapter with the delivery of three pieces of equipment to the chapter training facility in Manheim on March 5. The equipment includes a rough terrain forklift, a 1930ES scissors lift and a E300AJP boom lift. JLG Industries Inc. and ABC National formed a strategic partnership in 2018 to help solve industry challenges with world-class education, training and equipment solutions. As part of this
partnership, ABC Keystone member companies and chapter employees have provided user feedback to JLG Industries through time spent evaluating and testing equipment at the JLG facility in McConnellsburg. In 2019, ABC Keystone’s director of safety services, Kevin B. Keith, became the first JLG equipment-trained instructor across ABC’s 69 chapters. With the upcoming American National Standards Institute (ANSI) 92.20 suite of changes, the unique certification that Keith holds allows ABC Keystone to provide better training and service to its members and employees.

The Giant Company recently announced several updates as part of its efforts to continue meeting the needs of its customers and communities during the COVID-19 pandemic, including modified hours intended to help care for older members of the community. In order to allow more time for team members to sanitize, unload deliveries, stock shelves, and better serve customers throughout the day, all store hours were adjusted to 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. beginning on March 19 until further notice. Effective March 19, all Giant, Martin’s and Giant Heirloom Market stores are open from 6 to 7 a.m. to customers who are age 60 and older only. This age group is especially vulnerable to the COVID-19 virus, according to the CDC. The schedule change will allow customers in this age category to shop in a less crowded environment, which enables social distancing. They will also shop prior to any other customers entering. Although team members will not request ID for entry, the company asks its customers to
respect the purpose of the early opening. Beginning immediately, Giant is placing a limit of two items on key categories throughout the store, including paper goods and disinfectant products. Effective March 25, all instore pharmacies will open at 6 a.m. every Wednesday until further notice to accommodate older and immunocompromised members of the community. This change aligns with the modified store hours of 6 a.m. to 7 a.m. daily announced to service customers who are age 60 and older and for those who are immunocompromised. For the hours of the pharmacy at local stores, readers may visit the Giant or Martin’s websites. Senior customers can now pick up their prescriptions using the Giant Direct or Martin’s Direct parking spaces at their local store. The prescriptions will need to be paid for (by credit card) in advance by calling the pharmacy. Once the customer arrives at the store, they call the pharmacy regarding their prescription pickup. A pharmacy team member will then deliver
the prescriptions to the customer’s vehicle, verifying the customer’s information while having them sign in order to receive. For senior customers who do not wish to come into the store, The Giant Company is now offering UPS mailing of prescriptions. The prescriptions will need to be paid for (by credit card) in advance by calling the local Giant or Martin’s pharmacy. The prescription will arrive in two business days and there will be no shipping charge at this time. The Giant Company continues to offer delivery and pickup through Giant Direct and Martin’s Direct. Available slots are limited, and the company is working to expand capacity. Currently, only contactless deliveries are available to all customers in all areas until further notice. Contactless delivery means that the driver will practice social distancing during the delivery process. For more information on the Giant Company’s efforts in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, readers may visit https://giantfoodstores.com or https://martinsfoods.com.

Golf Event Rescheduled The Landis Adult Day Services (ADS) benefit golf outing has been rescheduled for Friday, July 24, at Foxchase Golf Club, 300 Stevens Road, Stevens. The golf committee has postponed the event out of the concern for clients, residents, staff, and a community of supporters, For those who have already committed as sponsors or have registered to golf in the event, originally scheduled for Friday, June 5, reservations will be transferred to July 24. The needs of Landis ADS clients and its families have not decreased during this mandatory closure. Although ADS clients are staying safe by staying home, this puts tremendous pressure on their caregivers, especially those who are caring for loved ones with memory loss. It is important to be prepared for their return when Landis ADS is permitted to open. The registration deadline for sponsors and golfers is Friday, July 10. For more information about the event, readers may visit https://landisadultday.org/golf/ or contact Amy Henriques at 717-381-3584. If it becomes necessary to cancel the benefit golf outing, Landis ADS will consider registration or sponsorship as a charitable donation. Those who prefer that their contribution be handled differently may email Henriques at ahenriques@landis.org. All eligible sponsors are listed on the website, and their ads will be in the golf booklet. The commitment deadline for all sponsorships is now July 10 in order to be included in the golf booklet.
