“The Lititz Pretzel Fest (will be) very different this year,” explained Pretzel Fest chairperson Karen Davis. The annual event, which is organized by the Kiwanis Club of the Lititz Area, has traditionally included tastings and games on a single day in May. For 2019, the event will be divided into two days. The first will be a day of tastings, dubbed Pretzel Fest, geared more to adults, and it will raise funds for the second, dubbed Kids Fun Day in the Park, a day of games designed to appeal to children. Pretzel Fest, which will include up to 20 treats and beverages to try at Lititzarea venues, will be held on Saturday, May 4, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Kids Fun Day in the Park will be held on Saturday, May 11, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Lititz Springs Park, 18 N. Broad St., Lititz.

When nursery teacher Dawn realized that Sherry, the mother of one of her students, was on the verge of homelessness, she connected her to Bridge of Hope @ Good Samaritan Services (GSS). The program saved Sherry, the mother of four, after a family conflict jeopardized their living arrangement. Dawn also pulled together a “neighboring” group at their church, which became an essential support system for Sherry during her two years in the Bridge of Hope program. Through those essential two years, Sherry learned budgeting skills, was promoted in her full-time work and found permanent housing for her family. Sherry is just one example of the many women

Shrek and Fiona find themselves following a road they never expected to travel, resulting in comedy, music, and love. Fresh off his role as Colin in the Cavod Theatre production of “The Secret Garden,â€? Everett is working to perfect the role of the rough swamp dweller. “It has been a fun challenge for (Everett) to take away the grace and polish and be an ogre,â€? said Huyard. “We feel there’s a lot of growth (in this role), and ‌ he is doing really well.â€? Henne was already somewhat prepared for his part as Donkey, having played an animal in a previous Cavod production. “(Henne) was Pumbaa in our ‘Lion King’ production,â€? said Huyard. “He has grown (as an actor) since then. His (acting) instincts on stage have really (matured).â€? According to Huyard, the material will offer a number of the students a unique acting experience. “There are these fantastic, crazy fairytale characters,â€? said Huyard. “(The show will) give the students a chance to step out of their comfort zone and be something different than humans.â€? Huyard added that “Shrek The Musical Jr.â€? will provide challenges for a number of students because so many of the roles have moments in the spotlight. “Many characters have solos,â€? said Huyard, who noted that he loves the way the message of the story resonates with the mission of Cavod. “The whole story of ‘Shrek’ is that everyone is different and special and that should be celebrated,â€? he said. With the popularity of the 2001 DreamWorks film and its sequels, Cavod acting students ages 8 to 17 who auditioned for the show were familiar with the material. The cast of nearly 50 will be costumed by Jessica Horn in garb that suggests their characters, but will not make it uncomfortable to sing and dance. Makeup will be provided by Emily Johnson. “They have a big task in front of them,â€? said Huyard of Horn and Johnson. “I trust them.â€? Musical numbers that Huyard expects will be memorable will include “I Know It’s Today,â€? sung by the three females who play Fiona. “The young version (played by Emma Byrom), teenage version (played by Riley Fidler), and adult version of Fiona will all sing this song together,â€? he said. “I’m a Believer,â€? a pop tune audience members should recognize, will be part of the show, along with a song about Duloc that is a spoof on “It’s a Small World After All.â€? Tickets, which are discounted for students age 17 and under, may be purchased in advance at https://cavod.org or by calling 717-354-3355. Tickets may be available at the door for a higher price.

Then, in a wild stretch of just over five minutes, Garden Spot scored twice with Warwick answering each time, first on a goal by Sheppard and finally on Armstrong’s game winner. “Zoe Stauffer really kept us in the game in the first half,” noted Jeanes. “She had 13 saves on the day. of play, matching LCD/LC’s scoring at two goals each. Stauffer turned away another 13 shots on goal, while her counterpart Phoebe Stover made seven stops on the day. Armstrong led Warwick with three goals, while Lindsay Quinn and Amanda Beck each added one apiece. BOYS’ LACROSSE It was a much busier week for the boys who played a total of four games and came away with four more wins to stay in the hunt in Section One. They began the week with a 16-0 win over Cocalico, followed by an 11-9 victory at Cedar Crest, a 14-1 win against Elizabethtown and finished with a 14-8 defeat of Ephrata on the road on Saturday. “That was our goal for the week, and it was awesome to see the players put that much work in and be successful,” said head coach Chris Shaffer on his team’s clean sweep. “It can be hard keeping that right mindset through a long week like that, but our guys managed to stay focused the whole time.”

Enjoying a dominant 40-6 shot advantage over Cocalico in their game last Monday the Warriors, paced by Conor Adams’ five goals, had little problem posting the win as they scored five times in each of the first three quarters and once in the fourth. Alex Epple posted the shutout with four saves while Hilton Michael scored three and had four assists followed by Cayden Rihn (3), Carter Davis (2), Austin Barto (2-1), and Joshua Swift (1-2). Cedar Crest served as the boys’ lone challenge on the week as the Warriors outshot the Falcons 27-18 and Epple stopped nine for Warwick as the offense used a five goal second quarter to turn a one-point deficit into an 8-7 lead at halftime. Gerhart’s four goals and five assists along with three scores from Davis helped lead Warwick to the one-point victory. Led by Adams’ nine goals, Warwick jumped out to an 8-1 halftime lead over Elizabethtown before adding four in the third quarter and two in the fourth. Davis had three goals and one assist, followed by Justin Gerhart

(1- 5), and Swift (1-2). Warwick out-shot Elizabethtown 24-8 and Epple made eight saves in net. Saturday’s game with Ephrata saw the Warriors squander a 4-0 first quarter lead in which the Mounts pulled to within one in the third to make it 9-8 before five unanswered Warwick goals in the fourth closed the door for good. Adams led with five goals and Davis added three while Gerhart had two and Michael, Barto, Rihn, and Miller all added one apiece. VOLLEYBALL Warwick continued to burn through the competition as they notched another three wins last week including a key 3-1 victory over third place Penn Manor last Tuesday. The Warriors sat alone atop Section One at the end of last week with Hempfield lurking just behind in second. The three-game stretch began in Millersville versus the Comets where Warwick overcame a hard-fought win in the second game by Penn Manor that easily could have turned the tide in favor of the home team. After scoring one run in the first inning against the Bears, Warwick didn’t score again until the fourth when Jeff Kline (1-3, 1RBI) singled into right field, bringing Martin (1-2) home from second. An error filled fifth inning resulted in three more Warwick runs to make it 5-0 before another error in the seventh on a ground ball by Evan Rohrbach (1-4) allowed Seibert (1-3) to score the final run of the game. Dagen Young started for the Warriors and pitched six innings of two-hit ball with five strikeouts to earn the win. A World Vision Global 6K For Water event in Manheim last year drew plenty of participants - and smiles - in spite of the rain. This year’s event will be held at Kreider Farms on May 4. an irrigation system, or a pump or filtration system powered by a solar panel. The organization also provides training so that local folks can maintain and repair the systems to ensure the project is sustainable. Although this is the second year the Kreider family has hosted a Global 6K site, Khalee’s parents, Ron and Hollee, have had a long-standing relationship with World Vision. “They have been on multiple trips with World Vision to multiple countries including Kenya, Zambia, Tanzania, Malawi, India, and Bangladesh to see the work first hand that World Vision is doing in these developing communities,” Khalee said. “Last year we were excited to host a 6K on our farm and invite the community to join us in supporting this organization close to our hearts and make an impact bringing clean water, something we all take for granted, to children and communities around the world.” The run/walk will be held rain or shine. Last year’s event took place in the rain.

“It ended up pouring last year, so we have our fingers crossed for sun. We prayed for water, and we got it, just not in the form we were expecting,” Khalee joked. Most of the course will be on paved roads or sidewalks, but there may be sections that are gravel. Strollers are welcome, and Khalee noted that even with the rain last year, people using strollers did not seem to have difficulties with the course. At the end of the course, chocolate milk, other beverages, and lactose-free ice cream will be served. Off-site parking will be available at Doe Run Elementary School, 281 Doe Run Road, Manheim, and Manheim Brethren in Christ Church, 54 N. Penryn Road, Manheim. Shuttles will run from the parking lots to the start line beginning at 7 a.m., with the last shuttle picking up at 8:30 a.m. The buses will start back up at 10:30 a.m. to transport folks back to the parking areas. Participants may register in advance at www.teamworldvision.org/team/kreider farms, or they may sign up at the event.

Kreider Farms is known for its dairy products, but on Saturday, May 4, the focus will be on water when the Kreider family hosts a World Vision Global 6K for Water event. The 6-kilometer run/walk will begin at 525 Indian Village Road, Manheim, at 9 a.m. and will go through what marketing and social media specialist Khalee Kreider noted that her family calls “Kreider Valley.” “Last year, Kreider Farms hosted the Global 6K for the first year with high expectations to bring clean water to 2,000 people,” said Khalee, a member of the fourth generation to be involved in the family business. “We went over and beyond our goal, raising upward of $150,000 and providing clean water to over 3,000 people. We would like to meet or even exceed our achievement last year in 2019.” Separate fees have been set for adults and for children under age 18. World Vision promises that each Global 6K for Water adult participant’s registration fee provides clean water for one person in need for a lifetime. Six kilometers has been set for the event to represent how far the average person in the developing world must walk for water, which is often contaminated, to sustain themselves and their families. According to information provided by World Vision, the average woman in rural Africa walks 6 kilometers to haul 40 pounds of water every day. Worldwide, women and girls spend a combined 200 million hours hauling water daily. Water projects by World Vision are developed in conjunction with local leaders to create safe sources of drinking water, whether through a borehole well,

Readers who would like more information may search for “Lititz Pretzel Fest” on Facebook or call 717-560-2295. A week later, a free event in the park will be held for children. The event will feature pretzel-themed games, food, and a book nook, according to organizer Melissa Warner. “We will have all the games (from past Pretzel Fest events) plus some new things,” said Warner, who noted that the popular salt shaker and tic-tac-toe games will return. Organizers are also working on new games, including a traveling suitcase scavenger hunt, a pretzel maze, and an obstacle course. There will be a bounce house on-site, and Key Club members from Linden Hall and the Manheim Township High School will do face painting. The book nook will feature free new and gently used books for children up to age 12. Food items, which will be free for children and available for purchase to parents, will include pretzel-wrapped hot dogs, water, cupcakes, chocolate milk, and ice cream. Warner noted that a number of volunteers will be necessary to make the Kids Fun Day in the Park a success. Individuals who are interested in volunteering may email geom1948@comcast.net. Each child who wishes to attend the Kids Fun Day in the Park must present a voucher at the event on May 11. Vouchers may be obtained at the Lititz Public Library or at the Manheim Township Public Library Art Gallery, 595 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster. Only 500 vouchers will be available.

The plant sale sponsored by Penn State Master Gardeners of Lancaster County will be held on Saturday, May 4, from 8 a.m. until sold out at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. This year, items for sale will include “plants of merit” selected by the Philadelphia Horticultural Society, Mt. Cuba, Penn State Flower Trials, Perennial Plant Association and Ohio State. Another feature this year will be planting designs and prepacked groups of plants for mailbox, pollinator, and container gardens. The sale will also include numerous varieties of native plants, plants for sun, plants for shade, pollinators, perennials, and annuals. As in years past, there will also be hundreds of plants grown by Master Gardeners. Selected tomato and pepper varieties grown from seed by Master Gardeners will be available as well. The Garden Shed will feature gently used garden tools, containers, and accessories. Although the plant sale will open its doors at 8 a.m., the Garden Shed will open at 7:30 a.m. Soil test kits and an information desk where people may ask garden questions will also be part of the event.
